I have a problem with my Dell “Latitude” laptop. Its built-in touchpad w/ mouse buttons gets in the way, while I’m typing on the keyboard. The lower ends of my thumbs occasionally contact the touchpad, and then the cursor on screen jumps somewhere else instead of remaining where I need it to be. (I use an external trackball as my mouse.)
Note, this isn’t the same laptop I’ve posted about before involving other issues. The other was in a Dell Precision laptop using a fully upgraded copy of Antix v19.3, and this one is in a Dell Latitude laptop using Antix v19.4.
If I could, I’d disable the touchpad from within the BIOS – but, this is a used (second-hand) machine, and some previous owner of the machine set an “Administrator password” which I don’t know the value of. The BIOS won’t let me change the settings of the machine’s components, without that password.
So, I’m wondering if there’s any method of over-riding the BIOS settings for the touchpad, to disable the touchpad via software within the Linux operating system. This, if at all possible, probably requires an expert understanding of the operating system, and coding.
Anybody have any ideas on how to disable the touchpad and its mouse buttons?

Hi Brian and skidoo,
The active debian repositories include contrib. After skidoo challenged my comment about antix.list.dpkg.old containing a contrib element, I rechecked and realized that it was debian’s unstable repository listing I saw that in.
I apologize for wasting electrons.
Thanks for clarifying and for catching my mistake.

Regarding contrib, these are typically additional packages contributed by the community and not necessarily rigorously verified by the development team.
posting to question whether the quoted bit is accurate.
re: antix.list
I have never seen a “contrib” section of repo.antixlinux.com mentioned

(See update below my original response – if interested <g>.)
Hi Brian,
Thanks for your comments.
I agree completely with your approach.
I am running Sid on my oldest computer, (old) stable on my newest and (almost out of date) antiX17 on my middle one.
The Sid install is for fun and to learn from. It happens to work delightfully in spite of my amateurish mishandling of things like repositories.
I am taking anticapitalista’s recommendations and will see what changes in my available packages.
I do believe that there are some other newbies on the forum who sometimes benefit from discussion of elementary problems that people like me run into.
Hi anticapitalista,
Thanks for confirming recommendations and nice to know that the latest version of elogind and associated packages is present in sid repositories.
stevesr0
P.S. I looked up the security package question and found the debian security FAQ which explained that the developer is responsible for managing security issues in all Sid/unstable packages. That is why the security team doesn’t maintain a security repository for Sid/unstable.

—————————————————–
Update – post changes to lists, no obvious problems. Change in packages listed by aptitude was minimal (7 fewer in the uninstalled out of 76457, and additional 25 new packages).
More importantly, system works (at least) as well as before.
Only residual academic question is the purpose of two list files which also reference Sid/unstable for debian and antix ending in .dpkg.old. The antix one included contrib which is not present in antix.list itself. I left both of these active.

Thank you for replying.
Q. Which antiX-19? Full, Base, Core, Net? SysV, Runit? 64-bit? 32-bit? Stable? Testing? sid?
A. Full, 64-bit. I just did a standard install, so I assume it’s AntiX stable.
I don’t know which init it uses, but again I assume in the absence of any other information that it uses SysV because I didn’t tell it to use anything else when I installed it.
Here’s my output for inxi -Fxzr;

Hi seaken64,
(See UPDATE below)
Thanks for your response. Your quote from anticapitalista seems to mirror his post from 2018 (see below).
I have the following active repositories (category listed in “()”):
1. sid nonfree main (antix.list, debian.list)
2. sid contrib (debian.list)
3. sid nosystemd (antix.list)
4. testing nonfree main (antix.list, debian.list)
5. testing contrib testing-security (debian.list)
6. bullseye main nonfree (antix.list, debian.list)
7. bullseye contrib, (antix.list.dpgk-old, debian.list)
8. bullseye-security (debian.list)
9. bullseye nosystemd (antix.list)
10. bullseye-backports nonfree contrib main (bullseye-backports.list)
11. bullseye-updates nonfree contrib main (debian-stable-updates.list)
UPDATE: I have just now read through the 2018 thread entitled antix Sid debian repos. So unless things have changed from that time, I have way too many list files AND individual repos active.
Anti’s list recommendations for Sid users:
“antix.list
# Use with Debian Sid repositories.
deb http://repo.antixlinux.com/sid sid main nosystemd
debian.list
###### Debian Unstable/Sid##########
###### Use at your own risk! ########
deb http://ftp.gr.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free”
Note Bene. If this is still the case, everything in testing, stable, updates and backports should also be in Sid? So, the Sid repositories should be larger than the other versions (testing, stable). What isn’t covered with anticapitalista’s lists are security packages; aren’t they needed in Sid?
I would appreciate a response before I redo my active repositories.
Happy holidays to all.

Hello,
My first post here. I have been using Linux for some time but now switched over to AntiX. Amazing distro to be had. When I run the CLI Apt based Package Manager either via terminal (sudo or not) or the menu, it asks for an update. Doing so, I get a response on the lines of Missing List Files. I did my search on the forums here and on MX Linux as well but couldn’t find a suitable answer. Below is the log file (at /var/log/cli-aptiX.log)
Found man page: cli-aptiX.1
Checking source files ...
Missing list file(s): security.debian.org_dists_bullseye-security_contrib_binary-amd64_Packages
Missing list file(s): security.debian.org_dists_bullseye-security_non-free_binary-amd64_Packages
Found list files: 16
Missing list files: 2
It appears that at least one list file is missing
The inxi -r output is as follows:

I searched Google and came up with Debian 11 – Errata, here is states that the bullseye-security repo must be mentioned as deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security bullseye-security main contrib non-free.
My question is should I update my repo list for this? and should others do so as well?

I just finished updating to Sid. But I noticed I enabled the deb-multimedia.org repo. I remember reading that can cause problems. Maybe I shouldn’t have enabled it. But so far everything looks good in antiX-21 Sid.
Here’s the inxi report:

Hi and thank you for your interest.
I use ‘slim’ (version in item no. 2) of my 1st post) and IceWM or Minimal-JWM are accessible without problems.
Do you believe that switch to ‘slimski’ may solve the issue?
Seems that every failed attempt to login to fluxbox does some reset of ‘~/.fluxbox/startup’ (disable execution).
Output of ‘inxi -Fxr’:

I hope that the inclusion of MS Teams repository does not lead to a Franken-antiX.
PS: Need to leave and will be back in an hour or two.
