I am playing with my 32-bit systems today and on this machine when I look at the inxi report I see it says

      base: Debian GNU/Linux bookworm/sid

and I am wondering what that actually means for this particular system. When I installed this system I used antiX-19 and the “testing” repos. I sometimes get confused about what I am running and have mentioned that I am running a “Sid” system in the past. But my repos are the “testing” repos and not “sid”. So, I thought I am actually running Debian and antiX Testing.

So, this report confuses me somewhat. Why is it reporting that it is “bookworm/sid”?

If my repos are Testing do I automatically update to Sid when the version changes from Debian 10 to Debian 11? I’ll do some research and try to read up on this myself. But this subject of testing and sid has always confused me. Does anyone care to give me an explanation of why the inxi report says Sid but my repos are Testing?

      Thanks,
      Seaken64

        Many thanks for those suggestions.

sudo packageinstaller worked fine – it asked for my password, then launched the package installer, and I successfully installed one of the packages. Previously, launching the package manager from the menu, it had not asked for a password, so is looking like a permissions problem?
(Although synaptic did not ask for a password either, and it still installed a package with no problems)

In case it sheds further light, the output of inxi -r:

I have done a fresh install of 32-bit Antix-21, full, on an old ex-Vista, Dell laptop with 991MB RAM, and has been updated with sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade. I am very impressed with the speed and overall look and feel.

Just one problem has emerged. Whilst synaptic appears to work fine, the built-in software installer and cli-aptiX do not, the latter starts with a message that at least one list file is missing, and offers to run apt update to fix this – except it doesn’t, I just get the same error message again. I can only assume this is why aptix’s own software installer is not working? – it runs briefly, then closes, having installed nothing.

I would like to install a number of the lightweight versions of software listed by the software installer, not all of which appear to be listed by synaptic.

The list files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d are:

          antix.list
          debian.list
          teamviewer.list
          bullseye-backports.list
          debial-stable-updates.list
          various.list

          Is there anything obviously missing?

          Thanks in anticipation
          Alan

Been a while, but have a new install of antiX21. Wanted to look at some log files so favorite apps antix->Applications->System->Rox Filer as root.
Would not open any files, just blank. So, terminal->su->rox, rox-filer would open any file.

You had this at one time and this has probably messed it all up

No active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/antix.list

The whole thing looks a bit messed up.The /etc/apt/sources.list should be an empty list, normally.

                In: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.list should be
deb http://debian.otenet.gr/debian/ buster main contrib non-free
                deb http://security.debian.org/ buster/updates main contrib non-free

                in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian-stable-updates.list should be
                deb http://mirror.eu.oneandone.net/debian/ buster-updates main contrib non-free

The most important, you do not have any antiX-list.In /etc/apt/sources.list.d/antix.list should be
deb http://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/mx/antix/buster/ buster main nonfree nosystemd

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
                  libgtk2.0-dev : Depends: libgtk2.0-0 (= 2.24.32-3) but 2.24.33-2 is to be installed

WTF!! I don’t SEE held broken packages anywhere!!
This is a recurring problem! Always “a dollar short or a day late” with this Debian-based stuff. Is there anyway to keep current? NOT “bleeding edge” but “latest stable” e.g. ? Thx …

BTW, do I need to upgrade from “Manolis Glezos” to fix this? Can it it done w/o trashing my system?

antiX-21 ships with elogind and libelogind0 on the iso.
For probably most users, this is just fine and it enables users to install various desktop-environments as they please without issue.

Users can easily replace elogind for consolekit or seatd and remove libelogind0.
                    Here’s how on antiX-21-full.

                    1. Temporarily, add dev to the antix.list in /etc/apt/sources.list.d

deb http://repo.antixlinux.com/bullseye bullseye main nonfree nosystemd dev NO LONGER NECESSARY TO DO THIS STEP

                    2. sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade

Do not blindly press Enter. Check that nothing important will be removed.

                    3. sudo apt install seatd

                    4. Now we can remove elogind. Check nothing important gets removed. This will also install libpolkit-gobject-consolekit-1-0

                    sudo apt purge *elogind*

                    5. Check that all is working especially printing, scanning (assuming it all worked before making the changes above).
Also check mounting usb devices, bluetooth etc

Note: You should be able to install xfce4 and lxde without libelogind0
You will not be able to do install MATE, KDE/plasma, Gnome (shudder) without libelogind0 getting installed.
Many apps in Debian are packaged (IMO wrongly) with libsystemd0/libelogind0 as a hard dependency so installing apps may also bring libelogind0 back.
I’m not going to rebuild all of Debian’s packages, only a select few.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

                      Hi everyone,
                      Since a day I am a proud user of antiX 21 🙂
I have done all updates and rebooted several times but unfortunately I still have a problem.

My screen turns on and off every many times (in a fraction of a half second).
Sometimes not for a minute but sometimes 3 times in a row.
How can I best solve this?

The details of my laptop are:

Before moving our latest build of connman 1.40 to the main repos, we need to make sure it works without issues.

We need testers running live/frugal and installed for 32 and 64 bit, for antiX-19, antiX-21(b), testing and sid users.

                          1. Temporarily, add dev to the antix.list in /etc/apt/sources.list.d eg for buster (antiX-19)

deb http://repo.antixlinux.com/buster buster main nonfree nosystemd dev

                          for antiX-21

deb http://repo.antixlinux.com/bullseye bullseye main nonfree nosystemd dev

                          2. Assuming connman is already installed – to get the latest (it will also install connman-iptables) simply

sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade

                          3. Report here your findings, giving details of your antiX set up eg antiX-21-runit (32bit) frugal.
Hopefully, connman updates smoothly and the network works as before.

                          Thanks

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Some more command readouts might help. I agree about using a newer surface kernel built already for those things. Lucky for me. Not a lot of hoop jumping for my chromebook.

Regarding the recommendation to update the kernel for vulnerabilities:

I apparently have 4.9.0-264 installed. The news item indicates I should update to 4.9.0-279, but I cannot tell which one, there are several listed in Package Installer.
                              My system information is:

I cannot tell if I have pae or not and which updated kernel I should install, if any.

If you do this in terminal:
                                sudo apt-get update -o Dir::Etc::sourcelist="sources.list.d/antix.list" -o Dir::Etc::sourceparts="-" -o APT::Get::List-Cleanup="1"
You can then open synaptic and it will only show packages available from the antiX repo (and installed packages, from whatever place).

I discovered this feature of apt when investigating for an app, and it is very effective.

When you are finished, remember to sudo apt update to restore the normal package-lists, so that you can again install packages from Debian and other sources.

                                  Dear developers,

I made a new Live usb key and made a complete installation in French (Belgium) on another USB key (ext2) with the modern kernel.

                                  First screen (F2=Language)
fr = ok, everything is translated in french
fr_BE = it’s in English and not translated in French.

                                  Second screen (F2=Language)
fr = ok, everything is translated in French.
fr_BE = it’s in English and not translated in French.

                                  Here is the information of my installation in English for a better understanding;
