      Edit: Better follow anticapitalista’s advice.

      First, make a backup of your system.

      Second, set the bullseye repos for antix.list, debian.list and any other .list in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

      Next, after apt-get update, install desktop-session-antix newest package
      sudo apt install desktop-session-antix
      Then, install all desktop-defaults for the window managers and file managers
      sudo apt install desktop-defaults-fluxbox-antix desktop-defaults-icewm-antix desktop-defaults-jwm-antix desktop-defaults-spacefm-antix desktop-defaults-rox-antix
      And continue upgrading normally.
      sudo apt dist-upgrade
      I don’t remember right now, but during the update, a few packages will be asked to be removed (packages that depend on gtk2 or python2.7, like ndiswrapper, lx-keboard, etc.). If errors occur, autoremove packages
      sudo apt autoremove
      and fix stuff
      sudo apt install -f
      and continue upgrading.

      Then reboot and pray everything worked.

                Short rapport about my first impressions of antiX21-beta2 Live from USB (intentionally without persistence for now) on a 32 bit Pentium M Notebook:

                To put it in a nutshell: Great! Many thanks to anticapitalista and the dev team!

                Boots straight up to desktop. This time the display is way better than in the Versions before, no blurry letters, colours are fine and well saturated this time. So the nouveau driver seems to have got some improvement meanwhile. But, and now comes the inevitable »but«, it seems to produce much more CPU load than I was used from antiX 17.4.1 and 19, especially while moving windows around by mouse, CPU goes up to 100%. I’ll have to check whether this can be solved by fine tuning the nouveau driver settings, or whether this can only be helped by installing original nvidia driver again. I’ll start another thread for this detail next days.

                In this place I’d like to plead for an additional entry in boot parameter selection:
                linux=<width>x<height>
                This cheatcode is not wellknown, not even documented, (At least I don’t know of, and I believe It isn’t even in our wiki still). And then it is the equivalent to grub gfxpayload entry, which allows to set a monitor/display and screen setting in case the needed configuration was not determined correctly and automatically. I’ve spent some hours on testing different methods of setting the correct values from within a blurry desktop using first ARandR from antiX control center and then xrandr in a console window. All in vain. It was literally impossible to fix this from within antiX, so this bootcode is of real importance, worthy to get an entry in boot screen. I’m sure I’m not the single person seeing a very poor desktop without this.

                This is all the technical data I’ve collected until now:

                $ inxi -Fxzr

                And now some of my attempts of fixing the resolution problem from within antiX:
                – Delay of ca. 60 seconds after graphics mode is supposed to get switched to correct resolution (immedieatly before X-desktop should come up), screen stays black, but backlight stays “on”. Finally desktop appears.
                – Desktop has wrong resolution, and no means to switch to correct resolution:
                – Graphic display of is slow and generally delayed, movement of windows with mouse pointer is scattering and heavily delayed, causing 100% CPU load.
                (looks like everything is software rendered by CPU instead of GPU.)
                – Control center –> Session –> Screen Resolution (ARandR) does only show
                1024×768
                800×600
                640×480
                The correct Resolution of 1440×900 is missing.
                Using xrandr on command line shows same result:

                $ xrandr
                xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
                Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768
                default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm
                   1024x768       0.00*
                   800x600        0.00
                   640x480        0.00

                Trying to correct this problem by adding the missing resolution following the default steps also fails:

                	xrandr --newmode "1440x900_60.00"  106.47  1440 1520 1672 1904  900 901 904 932  -HSync +Vsync

                	xrandr --output default --mode "1440x900_60.00"
                		xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
                		xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

                A short flicker at screen, but resolution remains unchanged.
                Now again:

                Next thing: What does all the dmesg stuff about vulnerabilities mean? I’ve believed antiX was safe in this concern. Can something be done to ship antiX 21 safer (or do I misinterpret this output?) Here is what inxi reported:

                Next observation:
                We see still an 3.17.x version of Claws Mail in antiX 21. This is very sad, since it doesn’t work anymore with most email providers, who meanwhile mandatory expect OAUTH procedure for accessing the account via POP/IMAP. This feature has been added in Claws Mail 3.18.0 / 4.0.0 only, so antiX 21 should really ship one of these versions, if possible.

                Another thing I have to check in detail is: Playing video on any of the bundled players caueses 100% CPU load even when using material of very poor resolution, and in one case even a complete system lock while playing, I had to hard reset. Maybe this is somehow connected to the nouveau driver, since I have never seen this behaviour on any antiX before while using original nvidia drivers on 17.4.1 and 19. Maybe this can also get helped by fine tuning the driver settings of nouveau.

                And now @skidoo : zzzfm is simply great. I saw it first time working now, it feels way better than spacefm. You did a great job! Many thanks!

                So that’s all I can tell for now, I hope this could help you. Next days I’ll try to check the remaining functions of this notebook under this beta release, one by one, and also on the athlon XP (also 32 bit) board.

                Btw, antiX 19 has proven to be rock stable here, uptime of the file server in cellar running on antiX was about 100 days, before I rebooted, merely for this beta-test now.

                So long
                Robin

                  64-bit live-usb.
                  Opera browser does not install from the package installer (on 64 & 32-bit).
                  Supertuxkart installs from package installer, but on modern kernel, it freezes my system. mouse moves, but clicks do not register; keyboard shortcuts don’t work.
                  On legacy kernel, supertuxkart wll get to offline/online account page, then freezes. keyboard shortcut to xkill works, & system recovers.
                  I don’t know if it’s my system that’s the cause or not; but you asked for any package installer anomalies, so I mention it.

                    Dear Users,

                    I checked the Linux kernel version on both my computers.

                    On my desktop with antiX 21, in the Package Installer, I have the new Linux kernels 4.4.0-279 or 4.9.0-279 or 4.19.202 or 5.10.57.

                    On my laptop with antiX 19 Full, in the Package Installer, I don’t have the new kernels. I made the effort to put a screenshot in English of Package Installer because the installation on my laptop is in French.

                    The two versions of antiX do not use the same repositories or is this a bug?

                    Best regards,
                    Wallon

                      thanks, still getting used to runit. just mentioned the previous as I didn’t
                      see it in the thread at all. haven’t tried the sysvinit version. The repo manager
                      also doesn’t set the repos correctly in antix.list file. it changed the testing one
                      but not bullseye.

                            Dear All,

                            I have some annoying things with my new installation with two screens/monitors in antiX 21.

                            I’m a translator for antiX and MX Linux. For my personal comfort, I bought and installed a second 75hz display-port monitor.
                            I asked for help on the MX Linux forum to get my new installation (one 60hz HDMI screen and one 75hz display-port screen) working because the ArandR and Display softwares were not working properly.

                            As usual, I used a Live usb key (Windows 10 + Rufus), I chose the Space-IceWM environment on the Live key and I did the installation on another USB3 key by saving the settings of my Live USB key. I did the whole installation in French with Linux kernel 5.

                            I did the installation on antiX 21 with the ArandR software. I saved the settings in the file /home/Wallon/.screenlayout/default.sh.
                            Here it is the code of my default.sh file.
                            I’m not sure if my screen on the display-port is set to 75hz because in the info full details report, there is no mention of the refresh rate for this screen.

                            1) If you see something wrong in this file, please tell me ?

                            #!/bin/sh
                            xrandr --output DVI-I-0 --off --output DVI-I-1 --off --output HDMI-0 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 1920x0 --rotate normal --output DP-0 --primary --mode 1920x1080 --rate 75 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output DP-1 --off --output DP-2 --off --output DP-3 --off --output DP-4 --off --output DP-5 --off

                            2) If I automatically launch in full screen these programs for example;
                            – LibreOffice,
                            – Firefox ESR,
                            – SpaceFm,
                            – Geany,
                            I can’t drag and drop the software window from one screen to the other?

                            I found a rather cumbersome procedure to move a window from one screen to another.
                            a) Alt + F5 (Restore)
                            b) With the mouse, click on the blue bar above the screen, hold the click and drag to the other screen
                            c) Alt + F10 (Maximize)

                            3) Please see the screenshot attached to my message.
                            When I do a printscreen of either the left or right screen (pointed with my mouse), antiX merges the image of my 2 screens.
                            How can I make a full printscreen of one screen without going through a window selection?

                            I would like a choice like for example;
                            Do you want a printscreen:
                            a) Left screen,
                            b) Right screen,
                            c) Merge both screens?

                            4) How to have the taskbar below on both screens?

                            5) I recall that I did the installation by choosing Space-IceWM.
                            If I change the desktop environment for example Space-Fluxbox, I lose a screen ! I have to restart my desktop to get my 2 Space-IceWM screens back.
                            If I change the desktop environment for example Rox-IceWm, I lose a screen ! I have to reboot my desktop to find my 2 Space-IceWM screens.
                            In short, I can’t change my desktop environment. It seems that ArandR is not automatically reactivated. I say that, I say nothing, it’s perhaps another software which must be reactivated to recover my 2 screens.

                            6) Don’t ask me to test with the Linux kernel 4 because my NVIDIA driver doesn’t work as usual. I would have to do a full install with kernel 4 and install the driver on that kernel.

                            Best regards,
                            Wallon

                              You could start with “normal” (non-sid) antiX 19.4-core and before installing anything, change the sources to sid (changing /etc/apt/sources.list.d/[antix.list,debian.list] and comment out or remove all non-sid sources) and then sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade so that you can then install as a SID system, and not a buster system. This way you can start with a system you know boots, with the 4.9 kernel, and installs with sid repos.

                              The method you’ve just described would appear to me to be the simplest way of installing sid on this old laptop – it looks really cool & many thanks for that. Just as an aside, I installed kernel 5.8 on the “normal” (non-sid) antiX 19.4-core, to check that kernel 5.8 in the sid-version was likely to have been the issue: the result showed that it was, i.e. the laptop rebooted to a blank screen.

                              Using your method, I’ve started with 19.3-core (non-sid). I did this because as sid isn’t yet available on 19.4-core, your method might not work, if I started out with antiX 19.4-core (non-sid). However, following installation of antiX 19.3-core (non-sid), I notice that in /etc/apt/sources/list.d there is a choice between both ‘sid’ and ‘rolling’ repos: it’s unclear now which one I should choose. I thought ‘sid’ was a rolling release, which was my reason for originally choosing sid, i.e. I’d like a rolling rather than a fixed release, with the caveat that it’s as stable as can be possible.

                              So in the */list.d what’s the difference between ‘sid’ and ‘rolling’ sources? Thankyou for any clarity on this, so that I uncomment the right options – many thanks.

                                You can ignore this advice, if you don’t think it applies to your case.
