The issue now is when I go to logout > suspend, it doesn’t suspend but instead shuts the computer down apparently. When I come back later, it’s totally off.

Hi @MCreaves, I happen to encounter an issue which initially looks similar. When I suspend my “new” Thinkpad computer, it would apparently shutdown, and then even automatically reboot.

Interestingly, later I realized that symptom was not exactly “suspend shuts down (and reboot) computer”. With a hint from somewhere else, I turned off the “Automatically turn on via LAN” feature from BIOS. Then, suspending my computer would not cause auto reboot. It seems the suspend is indeed working, because this computer happens to have a breathing light effect in its power button.

But then, the real problem in my case is that I can not successfully wake up the computer. Once wake up, the computer goes into reboot.

I don’t really know much about suspend on Linux since it has pretty much always just worked.

Same here, the suspend behavior works fine on my another two older Thinkpads.

After a lot of research, it seems that the issue might be related to an outdated BIOS

How would you know it is caused by BIOS? I also want to learn how to troubleshoot this.

In my case, Lenovo did a good job on continuing releasing newer BIOS version several times a year. But I want to make sure I have to go that route. I never did any BIOS upgrade before.

        PS: My computer.

I post this problem in Hardware despite feeling the solution may lie with a software change. I have had these strange effects with other similar but not identical PCs and with 3 or 4 display units including old 15″ and 14″ glass monitors, a portable flat screen tv with elongated format, and a more regular shaped flat screen commercial monitor. All manual adjustments possible on the displays have been tried without success. The PCs that have offended are both MSI 64bit, but have performed quite normally under release 13 and 16, but have shown this problem under release 17 and 19. I have 2 other PCs that work normally with these same monitors leading me to think that the particular graphics chipset on these MSI mainboards is to blame.

The install of 19.3 is completely up to date. The background and windows never correspond to the physical monitor boundaries, so parts are missing usually at the top of the display. When a window is located up there I cannot see the 3 minimise maximise and close buttons. Other parts of the display are splashed around the screen apparently randomly, and I can wipe them away using the mouse cursor arrow, but any mouse or application activity soon brings them back again. It´s no use my attempting to show you a screenshot because the screen buffer looks quite correct, although I attach such a shot to emphasise the point.

AR&R does not offer the screen layouts that are possible with the current monitor, only 800×600 and 640×480, all monitors I have tried will work with much more. I searched the forum for clues and located Anticapitalista´s post about changing screen resolution but when I looked in /usr/local/bin I found no file called screen_resolution.sh so was unable to proceed with this suggestion.

I can manage to work with it by wiping away the trash using the mouse arrow so I can see the workspaces and other items, but it is getting on my nerves.

not sure why it cannot be downloaded.

Probably because you threw away (outcommented) the “regular” antixlinux repository line in sources.d/antix.list and are attempting to use an antix suite labeled “testing” and are presuming that suite contains “nextgen versions of evvythang”, ala debian \\\testing\\\ (hint: it does not; its content is very sparsely populated)

            takeaway:
            jojo wants a pony
and jojo wants a pony NOW
and jojo will not accept an ‘alpha’ pony

            ok bye
Have fun mashing keys an ‘sperimenting !

OK but I thought you couldn’t have both the regular and testing repos enabled at the same time? Or did I make a mistake by disabling every one of the none testing repos?

@skidoo, yes, a few months ago anti asked if some of us could set up an antiX-19 sid installation and report anything wonky. I’ve been running this testing (sid) version for awhile and it’s been no problem. But now maybe since we’re getting closer to it becoming Bullseye I’m seeing the changes to Python 3 starting to reveal a couple of issues.

Here’s part of the inxi for this “testing” machine as I called it:

                System:

I think you’re probably right and it’s a python3 thing. I was not able to get anything from “python –version”.

I am perfectly okay with waiting for the upgrades to catch up. After all it’s the “testing” repo. I’m learning from both ends. This Sid version on one end and my antiX-17 Stretch versions on the other. FWIW, my antiX-19 Buster versions have been trouble free.

                  Thanks for your replies 🙂

I tried changing the repo again using Repo Manager, confirmed the change to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/antix.list with inxi -r then performed sudo apt update which completed normally. Then I rebooted, but the system came back up with the repo reset to the old unwanted mirror again.

Using cat /proc/cmdline confirms a persist_static state (both before and after reboot – I haven’t changed it for months).

Something is definitely resetting the repo at bootup time. I don’t think a remaster will help with this situation, because it the repo be reset again as soon as I reboot the remastered system.

I just wondered if there was a setting somewhere I could change to stop this happening. I can keep changing the repo each time I update using Repo Manager, but I am running a few antiX systems, which I update regularly so its getting a bit tiresome having to do it all the time 🙂

Ahh, a clue! The inxi paused after the Network but before the Drives section. There is something going on with the hard drive. It did eventually catch up and the prompt came back. Hmm.

                    inxi continued….

                      Short report, as promised:
                      Kernel: 4.19.184-antix.1-686-smp-pae i686 (32bit)

This is the very fastest and most stable kernel version I have ever seen on my machine. It works that rock stable now, I was able to have about 120 (!) tabs opened in firefox simultaneously (since working on some different projects at the same time, switching from one to the other on the fly). Moreover running geany, some roxterm terminal windows, thunderbird and claws mail email clients running parallel, writing on a lengthy text in Libreoffice Writer, casually hexchat, leafpad for fast notes, mirage and MTPaint, making screenshots using antiX standard screenshot tool, converting files using imagemagic in terminal window, and finally playing along music with Xmms, moreover connected wireless to WLAN. All this at the same time running, everything always responsive, without any delay, no interruption in sound or any artefacts on screen while moving, opening minimising or closing windows. All this while CPU load stays at 20 to 50% maximum during this stress test, with some short peaks to 100%. Never seen something like this to that extent on this single core 1,7 GHz notebook with 2 GB RAM only before… Its an antiX 19.3 persistent Live from USB system, most recently apt-upgraded. Even suspend-to-ram and wake-up works flawlessly out of the box now.
Have to add one possibly important difference to antiX default full ISO as delivered: Due to need of nvidia 304 legacy drivers I had to downgrade xorg-core to version 19 only. Moreover I had to do some finetuning to some programs, which otherwise would eat up complete cpu at once if settings left to default.

Thank you very much, anticapitalista! Great work.

                      @Robin

I read with interest your experience with kernel 4.19.184.
It has got me wondering if I would find a performance improvement if I used 4.19.184.
                      I have a Dell Latitude D620 (64 bit) and a Dell Latitude D610 (32 bit).
Up to now, I have been using the 4.9 kernal, and I just udated to 4.9.264.
                      What do you think?

Below is the system info on the D620:

I have made previous attempts to use connman, without success. Ceni being simple and functional causes me to avoid connman in any case. However I set up this little PC specifically to resolve the connman problems I have previously experienced, but have not been able to improve on my previous lack of success with connman. Therefore I am requesting analysis of my experience described here, and suggestions as to what may be wrong with my installation.

This PC has a basic install of 19.3 with an AMD 64-bit cpu, low on memory and hard disk but has successfully run 16.4.1 for several years with every satisfaction. Previously I used it with an ethernet connexion, which I now wish to avoid, hence no install update or upgrade has been done yet, and several changes are awaited including to the repositories.

I ran through the antix wifi switch procedure which executed correctly, and entered the wlan name (SSID) and key text as necessary. There appears to be no attempt by connman to act on the data present and search for and make the required connexion.

The wlan adapter is hanging on the end of a short USB cable and has a short antenna, it is a TP-Link TL-WN722N 150mbps unit which I have used with success on previous occasions. I wonder if it is compatible with the kernel and my installation ?

So, I just installed AntiX yesterday, boy was wifi a pain in the backside to get going compared to MX, but I got it going. Also a side note, the Control Centre GUI ceni and connman buttons do absolutely nothing when clicked for some reason. It is also a real pita to install newer kernels without internet so your wifi dongles will work lol.

The issue now is when I go to logout > suspend, it doesn’t suspend but instead shuts the computer down apparently. When I come back later, it’s totally off. I don’t really know much about suspend on Linux since it has pretty much always just worked.

Info about the hardware (yeah, RAM modules mismatched, it came that way, more matched RAM on the way):

                                Well, burrezo, I greet you.
I’m gobsmacked. Really. Hats off to you and Jorge Maidana!
Thank you very much for posting this solution for a problem I was working on for a long time now. This nvidia driver kept me from upgrading to antiX 19 up to now, and I was in doubt whether my notebook would be bricked on purpose by Nvidia finally, which would have happened if no solution for this problem would have been found before next year. Nouveau driver doesn’t work at all on this Notebook, resulting in blurry text and milky fog on the screen in X, which makes it hard to see what you are doing, and a blank black console, not allowing to enter anything.

I followed your guidance and the 304.137 driver installed flawlessly on a fresh antiX 19.3 install (all recent upgrades applied)

Only the command “sudo update-grub” in step [3] didn’t work for me. It responded with an error (“grub: failed to get canonical path”). I tried to chroot to make it work but didn’t figure out which folder on the bootdevice would be the correct place to chroot to, and since the live USB stick (persistent) does engage Isolinux instead anyway, I decided to execute the steps in a different succession instead: First I prepared and executed everything (including the deinstallation of xserver-xorg-core and reinstalling the stretch version after switching the repositories), except for the installation of the already patched nvidia driver itself. Strange enough, the system booted to textmode in runlevel 5 on next boot (without updating grub before). Since X was not running, the patched nvidia driver installed perfectly. So I executed the final steps of your guide before rebooting. You’ll need to enter the command “sudo reboot” on commandline, in order make sure save-persistence for the root file system will be properly completed, so the new nvidia driver is stored. After reboot antiX 19.3 came up with clear, strong colours on screen and pin sharp letters. Everything seems to work as expected at the first glance, but I’ll report here about stability and whether I come across any side effects over time. I’m a bit in doubt about security, having to set xserver on hold. How do I get security updates for this in future?

OK, for now here are the system details:

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

OK, my previous statement was outdated, since I had installed on the other antiX 17.4.1 system running on athlon XP hardware a more recent version meanwhile. (I was sure I had, but had to recollect the details, searching for the notes I took about the installation.)
So here you are another one, functioning, proven to work rock stable and with long uptime, and maybe someone can profit from the data.

                                  sudo apt-get install virtualbox
The most recent version present on antiX installs,
but in the end of installation it fails to modprobe vboxdrv:
                                  dmesg |tail shows:

[3457526.728164] vboxdrv: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel.
[3457526.740810] vboxdrv: Found 1 processor cores
                                  	[3457526.741396] vboxdrv: Requires SSE2 (cpuid(0).EDX=0x383f9ff)

Specific to athlon thunderbird and XP is that it does support SSE1 only.

                                  According to Oracle database
SSE2 is required starting with VirtualBox version 5.2.10 and version 5.1.24.

The latest Version NOT requiring SSE2 (and running with SSE1 only) is 5.2.8, which can be found at
                                  https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Download_Old_Builds_5_2
                                  Following files are required:
                                  https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.2.8/virtualbox-5.2_5.2.8-121009~Debian~stretch_i386.deb

First check whether the files were downloaded without errors:
                                  shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS

                                  apt-get --purge autoremove virtualbox
to remove the nonfunctional virtualbox version from the system

                                  apt-get install /<path>/virtualbox-5.2_5.2.8-121009~Debian~stretch_i386.deb
                                  apt-get install libsdl-ttf2.0-0
                                  modprobe vboxdrv

Add yourself (any user) to group “vboxuser”.

In case you have existing virtual machines you need to register them, e.G. your existing XP box:
                                  registervm '/<path>/WinXP.vbox'

Before the guest will be able to start you may need to add privileges for the folders containing .vbox and .vdi files as well as for the files itself. (I belive it was necessary to alow “read”, “write” and “execution” for “user” and “root” at least, but maybe “other” had to get the privileges also to make it work.)

And you’ll need to add the extension-pack from above from within virtualbox (entry is to be found in virtualbox menu “settings”)

Since I needed an LPT from within Guest system port I had to follow the steps described in this guidance in Virtualbox-Forums
                                  In short:
To activate Virtualbox LPT port support for a virtual machine use

                                  VBoxManage modifyvm "Name_of_VM" --lptmode1 "/dev/parport2"
                                  VBoxManage modifyvm "Name_of_VM" --lpt1 0x378 7

once. Adjust the settings according to your needs. And before each start of virtualbox make sure lp module is unloaded:
                                  sudo rmmod lp
Otherwise no Virtual machine configured as described above will be able to fire up at all.
After this the Parallelport is present and usable in the virtual machine, but it might be necessary to configure it manually inside the guest (only in case it is not autodetected).
After virtualbox is powered down you might want to
                                  ‘modprobe lp’
again in order to make the port available to antiX again.

Info from VirtualBox graphical User Interface:
