Over time the resource consumption of the various tools and application, and even the size of the kernel increase.
A decade ago I could run antiX with IceWM and use around 60 MB of memory, even less than that at start up time.
Now if I can stay under 100 MB or even close, I’m happy. Larger systems use 300-400 MB before even running any applications.

So to me that means it is likely that the size of the system and the footprint it consumes is larger.
If it’s too taxing, try an older release and only update what you need to use and see if it helps.

        Hi,

I have recently installed antiX on a PC and as it’s based on debian I was hoping I will be able to manage the machine using debops (an Ansible-based host management framework). This framework however requires me to install the libuser package which fails reporting a conflict for the /etc/libuser.conf file:

$ LC_ALL=C sudo apt install libuser
        Reading package lists... Done
        Building dependency tree
        Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
          gconf-service gconf2-common libboost-python1.67.0 libexiv2-14 libgconf-2-4 libgnome-keyring-common libgnome-keyring0 libgtksourceview2.0-0 libgtksourceview2.0-common
          libgtop-2.0-11 libgtop2-common libpango1.0-0 libpangox-1.0-0 libqt5designer5 libqt5help5 libqt5script5 libqt5test5 libxklavier16 ndiswrapper ndiswrapper-utils-1.9
          python3-distro-info unattended-upgrades
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
The following NEW packages will be installed:
          libuser

The /etc/libuser.conf file is indeed owned by the desktop-defaults-core-antix package:

but it’s empty on my system:

        $ cat /etc/libuser.conf
        enki@gauss:~
        $

Why is it installed by the default antix installation when libuser is not? Why isn’t it treated as a normal config file with dpkg asking me whether I want to update it? How to fix this?

            anticapitalista

MX team has backported the latest firmware-nonfree from Debian sid for use on buster-based distros such as antiX-19.

They are available in the repos, but users/testers will need to add the word dev after nosystemd in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/antix.list

Let me know if any issues arise.

              Thanks.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Promised feed back. Excuse the mess. This was done before Xecure explained things better. I need to read up a bit before my next feed back post. Crossing my fingers one can dicypher this feed back. Part of my command readout below was me looking for repo folder to be added to local sources list.

Sometimes. Assumptions made on a task just back you into a corner.
So a re-install on / partition while leaving /home alone probably
will fix my PBKAU problem on the previous install.
Did this install with eth cable hooked up.
Connection was auto go internet on live run.
Moving on to apt update and apt dist-upgrade while on eth0.
Will suss out wlan later on.

Bro-in law is still resting. I am limiting this thread to this gear
                      http://old.www.macomp.com/companionpc.asp

I will my test findings on .sh script in your other thread at a later day. When time permits.
Just need to sort out a few things first. Like making this current for one.

                      See. No drama. 😉

I made a fresh install of Antix-17.4. I changed the repos from stable to testing.

If I am not mistaken, the correct process if first update to buster and then move to testing.

Anyway, after changing the repo, did you dist-upgrade and reboot? Did everything work before the apt-get install –reinstall smplayer smplayer-themes or did you do all of this before rebooting?

This week seems that is going to me a nightmare for me, so I won0t have much time for the forum. As this is an experiment you are trying, let us know how it goes if you get to fix it.

Note that the nosystemd flag is missing, which I didn’t notice at the time. Why is it that a new installation has a wrong debian.list???

The debian list is correct. The only list that needs the nosystemd tag is antix.list I don’t know what magic anticapitalista has used, but it seems that the antix.list is the one that controls the debian repo systemd on a leash.

Quite unrelated, but maybe someone can help me with that too. Somewhere along the way the icons in Control Centre change from the very nice Faenza type (which is supposedly the default for Antix17) to the downright horrible Papyrus. It’s not that important, but if possible, I would like to avoid it.

This has already come up before:
                          https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/how-can-i-change-the-icons-of-the-antix-19-control-centre/#post-35426

This user, however, overcomplicated some things (I was able to “fix” the antixcc.sh in about 10 minutes or less.

I am going to share the file here. Decompress, open the antixcc .sh file in a text editor.
Now open in an editor (with root privileges) the file usr/local/bin/antixcc .sh
copy the content (all) from my file to yours. That should fix all icons (I think).

Note: you may have to edit also the desktop-session-exit file, but it should be easy, as those icons are in antiX-faenza in /usr/share/icons, so just edit the icon path to there.

SpaceFM is a better file manager for these kind of things.

Anyway, I found the issue. Luckely I also have a 19.1 base iso around, so I found the issue.

When dist-upgrading, I found that apt-antix, after upgrading, wanted the user to replace the antix.list If a user says no, the result is that the buster entry for the antix repo stays as
                            .../antix/buster buster main nonfree
                            intead of being replaced with
                            .../antix/buster buster main nonfree nosystemd
This means that systemd programs are NOT being blacklisted if the user doesn’t accept the change.
I needed to select No to be able to reproduce the error.

I have just recovered from all the problem.

Here is the solution in case you want to try to fix it.

                            1. restore apt list
                            sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/antix.list
Change the second line (starting with deb). It looks like:
                            deb http://........./antix/buster buster main nonfree
go to the end of the line and add nosystemd It should look like this:
deb http://........./antix/buster buster main nonfree nosystemd
Control+X to exit (it will ask you to save, say Y and then Enter)

                            2. Update the package list
                            sudo apt update

                            3. Install xorg
                            sudo apt install xorg

                            4. Install updates
                            sudo apt dist-upgrade

                            reboot.

Edit: Hopefuly this fixes it for you.
Then, after, you can uninstall system-config-printer-udev if you want (it won’t work anyway).

I think the firmware for that i915 graphics card is not even in Debian sid yet.

                              https://packages.debian.org/sid/firmware-misc-nonfree

Net doesn’t come with any firmware installed.

If you can get it installed, or run live with persistence, you may need to install the linux-firmware package that I backported from Ubuntu (via MX).

                              https://repo.antixlinux.com/sid/pool/dev/l/linux-firmware/

It is huge and to install you need to add the word dev to the antiX sources list in antix.list

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.
