Choose another repo since it seems that one is down.

Actually, edit antix.list in /etc/apt/sources.list.d to

      deb https://mirror.adct.be/mx/packages/antix/buster/ buster main nonfree

Nothing to do with expired keys.

You need to edit antix.list and debian.list to only use testing.
The other *.list repos should be disabled eg buster-backports,

          Welcome.

          1. Testing is testing so there are no guarantees that it will not end up ‘crashing the system’.
Simply edit antix.list and debian.list files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d

          2. Use Preferred Apps in the control centre

Added: You might be better off installing latest krita packaged by MX.
It should work on antiX-19 as well without any need to use the testing repos.

          krita debs

This list of repos is from a PC with 16.4 installed, recently updated by apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade. The IT and PTaddresses have crept in somehow and may be causing the trouble. But things are much worse on a laptop I installed with 17.4.1 which I will get to you later today. The facebook login screen on this PC is entirely portugese as you can see, a few days ago it was entirely english. I’m guessing it’s some nonfeasance on my part. Is it reversible by editing the repo lists? Maybe making them read-only? Or is a general re-install indicated? Maybe it’s time to move up to release 19?

This PC is running 16.4 and the invasion of foreign languages is not so bad as the laptop I have with 17.4.1 installed which is almost totally changed to Spanish now. I’ll get some examples to you later today from, that one. As you see below there has been a corruption from whatever was there before, to IT (italian? and PT ()portugese?). Since install I have onle run apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade about every 3 months, previously without trouble. This one has facebook affected as you can see by the screenshot of the login page. I suspect I am guilty of some nonfeasance or other but would like to know if I can reverse these repo corruptions without a complete fresh install? Maybe it’s a warning it’s time to be moving up to release 19?

So here is what I did and am working with. So far it seems like a good transition although I am getting a lengthy delay (about 1 minute) on boot while the system hunts and sets up eth0 which I don’t use. Anyway, here are the steps I followed.

Note: base antiX19.1 root password is: demo

                1. Change the repos to only point to sid/unstable in /etc/apt/sources.list.d ie antix.list and debian.list
                2. Disable the other repos ie debian-stable-updates.list, onion.list and various.list
                3. sudo apt update
                4. sudo apt purge fbsplash-antix (otherwise you get errors)
                5. sudo apt dist-upgrade
                5. Read or post the output to see if anything critical will get removed.
                --- take all defaults
--- allow auto restart of services
                6. If there are any ‘broken’ packages do apt -f install
                7. Reboot after upgrades have finished.
                ===============================
                Next steps...
                upgrade kernel to 5.2.21 antiX

                Reboot

Assuming you haven’t any third party repos and you haven’t installed a desktop-environment.

                  1. Change the repos to only point to sid/unstable in /etc/apt/sources.list.d ie antix.list and debian.list
                  2. Disable the other repos ie debian-stable-updates.list, onion.list and various.list
                  3. apt update
3.1 apt purge fbsplash-antix (otherwise you get errors)
                  4. apt dist-upgrade
                  5. Read or post the output to see if anything critical will get removed.

I recently installed 17.4.1 onto an Acer laptop and was shocked to find that some routines are showing Spanish language and not English. I then had a look at one of my desktops with 16.4 installed, and found that following the recent apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade, some words in Portugese are creeping in! These are the repositories from the latter PC.

Repos: Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/antix.list
1: deb http: //it.mxrepo.com/antix/jessie jessie main nosystemd
                    Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian-stable-updates.list
                    1: deb http: //ftp.pt.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free
                    Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.list
1: deb http: //ftp.pt.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
                    2: deb http: //security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
No active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mx.list
No active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/various.list

These must have been changed somehow since the original installation, to the detriment of the routine language. How can I prevent the list of repositories from being overwritten in this way?

I have Spanish keyboards but require English language releases and installations, while I read Spanish I am uncomfortable working with it.

It was only possible to access the network when it installed the driver:bcmwl-kernel-source_6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu5_amd64.deb
In addition, every time the kernel was changed, the driver had to be reinstalled.

                        WIFI SWITCH
There is a switch on the computer, it didn’t appear to want to do anything last time but seems to have worked now? Maybe I restarted the computer, it seems like I have to press it every time I turn the computer on. I’ve configured the wifi but it just doesn’t seem to want to connect to it? I do now have 2 internet graphics in the bottom right of my screen though; one for eth1 which I presume is my ethernet as it’s been connected the longest, and one for eth0 which I’m therefore presuming is the wifi. Eth0 current rate flickers between 0 and a few hundred B/s, says it’s transferred 302KiB in and 4701B out, but when I unplug the ethernet it can’t find any web pages. A few more B/s are transferred and the ethernet graphic goes dead but when I try to load a page it says server not found. When I set it up I didn’t put in an IP address or anything into the red boxes, presuming that it would find them itself from the router? Do I need to fill all of those in?

                        lspci gives me this;

I have now updated the system, what is the lightest browser available? It’s struggling with firefox if I have more than one tab open, which is to be expected as the mod said.

If you were to upgrade to sid fully with dist-upgrade the synaptic is not really installable.

IIRC, you and I have both expressed a mistrust toward dist-upgrade, so I get where you’re coming from…
…but I also do not want to “dabble with IFs”. To be clear, yes, my test did include performing dist-upgrade.

Here’s a set of steps that you, or anyone else, can use to quickly verify that synaptic is (currently, don’t blink eh?) installable.

                          pristine antiX-17.4.1_x64-full.iso, in virtualbox:

not sure what i actually did to confound the system, would there be any caveats about formatting and reinstalling the antix19 full on the root partition and leaving the home partition intact?

it would be nice to have the man pages back as well as having vlc and audacity and to find out if streamlight actually works on this system.

Thanks for all the thoughts and help!

Can you post the various repos used, I can’t remember?

                                inxi -r might work

                                Here we go:

As per anticapitalista’s suggestion, am posting this as a new thread; looking for some obscure hack for Connman.

The house I am living in has a very good wifi box hooked up to Hughes satellite dish. It is set up with a SSID name, and NO ENCRYPTION, because the house is 15 miles from the nearest town, and therefore is not needed (is the explanation from the owner, from whom I rent a bedroom). AntiX 19’s Connman is absolutely worthless in my situation. MX19’s Network Manager connects immediately. AntiX 18.4.1’s ceni functions without a passphrase as well. But Connman does not.

I tried to get Connman to connect with its graphical user interface. It wants my wifi’s SSID, which is “DarkCloud2”. So I entered it, which brought up a window asking for the passphrase, WHICH IT DOES NOT HAVE, because it is completely open and unencrypted. Connman will not proceed from there. I have tried typing in “<none>”. Didn’t work. Online instructions for Connman are singularly unhelpful at best, and are, apparently, nonexistent in antiX 19. Previous versions of antiX didn’t have any for Ceni either, but I was able to muddle through it, with the help of one of DolphinOracle’s videos. Not so with Connman.

I duckduckgo’d “linux connman network manager”, couldn’t find any relevant links for my problem, other than to type in “connmanctl enable wifi” into the terminal. Which I did. eventually typed in “connmanctl help” or “help connmanctl”, don’t remember which. It LOOKED helpful, but nothing I tried would let me get past SSID without a pesky passphrase. Even tried typing in the wifi’s BSSID “00:80:ae:72:7d:e2”. Posting inxi information would seem to me to be unhelpful, as my netbooks’ internal systems are not the problem.

Anticapitalista’s suggestion to add ceni back in is not useful for the live version, let alone a full install, as wired Ethenet is at present unavailable to me (in order to download ceni–-as I said, it’s not my wifi box, and physical access to it is unavailable). Only–and rather unpalatible–solution I can think of, is attempting to remake a core iso into a base or full iso, something I do not know how to do–DolphinOracle’s videos on the subject, dating back to 2014 and antiX 13, seem a bit outdated as to what packages to add back in, if nothing else!

Is there any possibility of fielding a special base version with ceni instead of connman? Because, at the moment, if I want to use antiX19, given my present skill set, I’m dead in the water.
