        I know. 😀

I can be like a goat head thorn stuck in the sole of my high top converse tennis shoes.

Just wondering what I can finagle as I keep this install humming.
Just being persnickety I guess as I feel better from the flu.

Sometimes I drive a crooked road to get my mind straight.

          Good Morning,

I am back with my patient.

Still I am not able to install policykit-1. It says, that it depends on libpam-systemd, which shall not be installed.

policykit-1 : HĂ€ngt ab von: libpam-systemd soll aber nicht installiert werden

          My repos look like this:

          @anticapitalista

Also on the third screenshot and in your inxi-r from above it looks like your antix.list looks like this

deb http://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/mx/antix testing main nosystemd nonfree

            But should look like this
deb http://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/mx/antix/testing/ testing main nosystemd nonfree

You have to change this manually(edit as root) in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/antix.list

Boot again and at failed desktop, press Ctrl Alt 1. This should dump you to outside X.
Login as root and apt-get update followed by apt-get install consolekit
              Reboot

system is working again. Thank you very much!

Are you sure you are only using testing repos?

              please see attachment and this:

There are several strange things in the system:

              – above it says that several packages could not be installed, that means that you have requested for an impossible situation, or, if you are running unstable, that some needed packages are still not created.
(my translation; original English is likely to have different wording)
              Following packages have unsolved dependencies:
              dconf………………
E: Error: Interruption caused by pkgProblemResolver::Resolve invoked; this could be because of held back packages.

              – synaptic was uninstalled during last update. I tried to reinstall it. Got the message it depends on policykit-1 and policykit-1 depends on libpam-systemd

              – somehow, the system has set me to Vietnamese repo.

I will check the other things tomorrow.

Still dist-upgrading. Hard Drive came out of a broke older IBM laptop I used to run.

Just toi twist your knickers on this install I got

So lack of ram does not figure into this laptop running 32 bit antiX. Only reason it is 32 bit. The hard drive came out of a older single core 64 bit laptop with no copious amounts of ram in it. This install is now years old since 2015. But it is current.

Now for the bad on what I am posting. You have MB of updates if installing 15 . Mine has been upgraded slowly and normally since I slapped this drive in here.
But the initial physical install of drive and powering on this laptop?

I pulled in 250MB of updates to bring it up to date. Using sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Having run this distro for years. I am finally getting the hang of accepting or denying the package maintainers version when it comes to /etc changes.
You will probably ask. But that is for later. After a successful install.

You will also notice the AntiX 15 in my readout even though I have dist-upgraded for years. Because? We like to know what you started with.
That is all. No biggy for me. Should be no biggy for you.

How to Search for AntiX solutions to your problems

                    Anonymous

                      We’re talkin’ about:

                      /etc/apt/sources.list.d/antix.list

If you open it, it’ll read:

                      # Use with Debian Stable/stretch repositories. Set as default for antiX-17. Note new repos
                      deb https://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/mxlinux/antix/stretch/ stretch main nosystemd
                      #deb https://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/mxlinux/antix/stretch/ stretch main nosystemd

Notice that “stretch” instead of “jessie”?

I’d recommend to stick with 16 since it’s working.
You’ll not get better or quicker OS on that HW.
Security is least problem on such machine.
Debian 8 “Jessie” is still supported.

If you still wanna risk, proceed on your own risk.

                      1. Make backup of your OS with Clonezilla first
                      2. Download my file and unpack it
                      3. Open Terminal and execute:
                      sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list.d /etc/apt/sources.list.old.d
                      sudo mv /PATH/TO/UNPACKED/FILE/sources.list.d /etc/apt/sources.list.d
                      5. log out / log in
                      6. Open Terminal and execute:
                      sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
                      sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
                      7. Wait, hope and pray …

It’s very well possible that you’ll kill your System since, that’s how it all started …

                      8. Wait until is done, READ & MAKE NOTES of EXACT messages if some problem appear.
                      9. Reboot after it’s all done
                      10.Open Terminal and execute:
                      sudo apt-get autoremove

If all went well, you have almost the same what you had before your upgrade.
If you can’t start at all or your USB doesn’t work any more or … don’t bother.
That’s why you made Clonezilla system image at the beginning. Put it back and enjoy.

Note that you might still need to change the Kernel and add Pulse Audio & pavucontrol manually.

I replaced BIOS with MrChromebook, MX 17 works on it although without sound.

But antiX would be more suitable for this weak laptop. I can’t get any antiX to even boot from live USB.

                        I tried:
                        17.2_x64-full
                        17.1_x64-full
                        17_x64-full
                        17.2_x64-base
                        17.2_386-base
Same with latest mx 18.1 beta all give me the same error

First I see: Error: unknown filesystem, press any key to continue

Few seconds later or it I press a key, I see asci like boot menu, no graphic, no F options at the bottom, there are two boot options (none works, screen just goes dark and stays tat way, cant switch to TTY, third option is memory test and if I choose it, i get another error:

Error: disk ‘hd0 msdos2’ not found

Interestingly, MX 17 does bot and I managed to install it.
But new beta MX 18.1 is acting the same as all 17 antix versions.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Specs:

My guess/hope is, since MX uses antiX base and since MX 17 works, maybe I can get antiX on it too somehow

That’s exactly what I wrote above.
You didn‘t change the repos to 17.

                          „jessie“ == Debian 8 (Basis for AntiX 16.x)
                          „stretch“ == Debian 9 (Basis for AntiX 17.x)

On a fresh (yesterday) install of antiX-17.2, SpaceFM/Fluxbox
there has appeared this empty antixsources.desktop file on the desktop.

It doesn’t appear to cause any problem except to my mind.
Does someone have an idea how to stop it from occurring?

                                Richard

On a fresh (yesterday) install of antiX-17.2, SpaceFM/Fluxbox
there has appeared this empty anixsources.desktop file on the desktop.

It doesn’t appear to cause any problem except to my mind.
Does someone have an idea how to stop it from occurring?
