Assuming you are using antiX17, cause you posted under.
This is mine repo-list:

peek in your /etc/sources.list.d/ directory
All of the *.list files are consulted. What you posted above looks like just the content of your edited antix.list
(btw: For custom “stuff”, can add an arbitrary number of aribitrarily-named *.list files in this directory instead of editing the stock list files)
Maybe “debian.list” got deleted?
Maybe “debian.list” got edited and all lines are currently outcommented?
Maybe just need to (re)generate a manifest of available packages? (sudo apt update or “Refresh” button in synaptic)

@Brian
xfce4-lite sounds like something I might use next time around, when
I start over rebuilding a new LiveUSB. Right now, I have the complete xfce4
installed and functioning to provide an xfce4 panel and my two pet xfce4 plugins.
My current problem is that I have corrupted the antiX login process for installing
additional desktops and/or window managers. Most notably, I have screwed up
what appears for the F6 ‘Desktop’ selections.
With my current repo list, I have no xfce4-lite.

My Win7 is legacy boot; no uefi alternative.
I greatly fear trying to successfully tangle with cpio operations and vim.
If your suggestion amounts to calling-up shell scripts and allows me at least
a nano editor, I can handle that.
If I can straighten out the F6 menu, should I expect that will repair antiX’s
ability to properly select all previous wms plus xfce4?
Will this cause a /home/demo/.xfwm4 directory and its contents to magically appear?
Default F6 now connects me with xfce4; will this continue or should I expect the
default may change as a result of modifying the F6 menu?

I fixed any failed to download errors and keyring errors long ago. I used Gdebi.
http://antix.daveserver.info/jessie/pool/main/a/antix-archive-keyring/
It seems to have worked for me, too. After that, I updated & upgraded the system without any errors at all. And now:

Use this repo

There was not such a repo at SPM. I added it, but after trying to update, I got error messages again:

If you have not installed anything outside the repos, then a dist-upgrade should be ok. I’d suggest doing it in a terminal with apt-get.
1. Make sure you are up to date with the default antiX-16 repos, ie jessie.
2. If all is ok with this update, edit debian.list and antix.list to stretch. Do not use mx repos.
3. If you want eudev, add it to the list in 5. (I added it)
4. apt-get update and then apt-get dist-upgrade. Check nothing important will be uninstalled.
5. You will need to install the following apps manually, since they are not on antiX-16, but are on 17. (You can choose which ones you don’t want)
apt-get install adobe-flashplugin arc-theme apt-transport-https artwork17-antix bootrepair-antix broadcom-manager-antix cli-aptix conky-legacy-all console-grid-gui eudev firejail fonts-crosextra-caladea fonts-crosextra-carlito fskbsetting galculator gnome-mahjongg gnome-mpv grubcc-antix gsmartcontrol gufw-legacy libeudev1 lxkeymap mps-youtube packageinstaller qt5ct xmms-skins-antix xserver-xorg-legacy
6. Remove the following (you may want to keep some)
apt-get purge browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash bunsen-pepperflash gnome-icon-theme gnome-icon-theme-symbolic gnome-mplayer gnu-fdisk gufw keyboard-cc-antix install-meta-antix live-usb-cli-antix live-usb-gui-antix mplayer2 roxterm-common roxterm-gtk3 siduction-archive-keyring spacefm-extras system-antix toshset ttf-dejavu-core udev libudev1 unetbootin upower xmahjongg
7. Install a new kernel. package-installer should give you some options.

Antix 16.2, up to date as of 2017 10 21.
Cups version in my repositories (listed below) is v1.75, 3 years old, and has been unable to configure my WiFi Printer (Brother HL-L2360DW, bought 2.5 years ago, newer than the installed Cups version). The same printer connected fine with Kubuntu 14.04, so my printer should work today.
I can attempt to install Cups from the Cups website, since it is a tar.gz, but before I hang myself, is my plan going to be a simple task, as in not needing me to manually relocate Cups’s default files and such??
On the other hand, maybe enabling a different repository would help, but which one?
