Has anyone opened control panel and use the test sound button yet?

Usually when I lose sound. That is my 1st check stop.

Then next step I might try is rfkill commands.

      harry@biker:~
      $       rfkill list all
      0: dell-wifi: Wireless LAN
      	Soft blocked: no
      	Hard blocked: no
      1: phy0: Wireless LAN
      	Soft blocked: no
      	Hard blocked: no
      2: hci0: Bluetooth
      	Soft blocked: no
      	Hard blocked: no

Then if using pulse audio. Instead of alsa. I open Pulse audio settings and make sure my settings are on point.

That is how I go about trouble shooting sound. Good luck.

Hi, I’ve been meaning to getting around to asking this. Based on my system info below, am I using the right kernel for my system? Also, I am using the zzzIcewm. What is the lightest, less resource intensive WM to use? Even when I update my system, it uses 100% of the CPU. Which I don’t know if that is normal due to my old hardware or perhaps making some changes might make it use less. In addition, I can’t seem to find a browser light enough to run on my system without it using 100% of the CPU and maxing out the RAM. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated thanks!

This Acer Aspire 3800 Desktop PC used to be the wifes system.
USB boot does not work anymore.
            Even with PLOP.
So got me -dvrw disc because my burner on another computer is picky.

Already done. Been fighting this bios and computer all day to get a operating system going on here. Large hardrive in here so I fought it tooth and nail. Since hardware was not cooperating.

For some reason, the problem occurred with the 4.19 kernel as well today morning after a reboot from Windows 10 (which adjusted the time +2 hours as seen in logs in antiX).
Power down and clean-boot to 4.9 (I keep a lots of series of kernels) solved it.
Girlfriend reported no such issue yesterday evening (boot from power down using kernel 4.19).

I rebooted (via ‘sudo reboot’) from the 4.9 to 4.19, login does not work again.
I tried to type in login, Enter, password, Enter – nothing.
Power down and clean-boot to 4.19 and it works again.
For some reason, reboot seems to be related the issue.

When I disconnect and reconnect the keyboard, the diodes briefly light up, hence I do not believe power/contact issue is the cause (unlike the mouse issue I reported in the past…).
The problem is hard to debug since I cannot log in.

                    LOGS in ‘/var/log/’:

slimski: waiting for X server to begin accepting connections
                    .

                    and occasionally
                    slimski: pam_authentication(): Authentication failure
which is probably due to typo in the password.

‘auth.log’ includes complaints about GNOME keyring but these were present in the past as well:

System runs rock stable as before, after this kernel update. Many thanks, anticapitalista!
This is a frugal-persist install, most recently apt-upgraded before I did the kernel update.
You wouldn’t believe this notebook is mostly 20 years old now (BIOS was flashed with an update two years after production date) when you see antiX running on it. It’s still in use for everydays work and multimedia up to 720p (3000kb/s).

Single issues when installing the new kernel was:

                            ERROR: update-menus [17874] Script /etc/menu-methods/icewm-common returned error status 1
ERROR: File /var/lib/dkms/virtualbox-guest/6.1.14/source/dkms.conf does not exist.

But this doesn’t keep it from running fine. Virtualbox 6.1.x can’t be installed on a 32bit CPU anyway. And I don’t see what the error in menu-methods could have caused by now. No visible effect as far I can see. So I don’t mind.

I made no driver or software changes – at least not intentionally.

                              — What about apt-upgrades ? A driver or kernel update could cause this easily, if some code was removed, changed or added, which causes now incompatibilities on specific hardware, while it solves issues on other hardware. Maybe an additional boot code, e.g. for acpi, is needed now? Try to check out on a fresh live USB system which has not seen any of the last updates.

right before this happened is that I unplugged the Ethernet cable while the laptop was suspended.

                              — OK, this reminds me of something: Long ago on antiX 17 I needed to manually rmmod the ipw2200 wlan driver before suspending and modprobe afterwards. Only then the notebook slept and resumed properly.

So you could try to rmmod all drivers not mandatory needed (e.g. for wlan, lan, bluetooth, tv-card (not graphics/video!), sound, card reader, pcmcia, firewire/IEE1394 or whatever). Check, whether suspend and wake works then properly. You need to modprobe the respective drivers then again after wake up. By successively reducing/replacing the group or set of excluded drivers you might be able to identify the culprit. They you can add this driver to the suspend and wakeup script, so the removal and restart is done automatically for you.

                              — Another chance is your BIOS battery is getting weak, and there might have been lost some BIOS settings previously present. So make sure nothing has changed without your knowledge within BIOS.

I was able to get a properly functioning network on installations of MX Linux (first), could not initially get networking installed on antiX (second) or siduction (third).
Today I installed Xubuntu’s latest LTS; EXTREMELY long, slow load and installation, but it works fine once installed (fourth).
Finally, I figured that PCLinuxOS would install and work (it does; fifth).

I’m here now with PCLinuxOS; here is the configuration:
