      Back with antiX and a brand new Liquorix kernel. Looking promising for me that the Linux 6.0 kernel may work well for me on this hardware; today the 6.0 kernel reached an early Release Candidate status.

      Regular antiX kernels will remain 4.9 and 5.10, but newer systems can also use the Liquorix kernels if you so desire…

      Here’s my example where it’s been working:

        I first checked out Antix a bit over a year ago, because of the live persistence USB. I was using a shuttle IPC i3 with limited memory and no hard drive. It worked perfect for the six months or so I needed it for a media server and web browsing appliance.

        That system is dead now, and most of what I have listed below never ran on it by choice at that time.

        When I got the system I’m typing this on, I started with Linux Mint so I could set up a Kodi appliance for a friend. Quick and easy that way.

        For the last year I have been running mxLinux “wildflower” no systemd, on an old HP g62 amd laptop and It has taken a bit to get the list below working on it, but I have done so, and am quite happy with the results.

        So now the goal of moving my main desktop machine completely to antiX.

        Requirements are weird and maybe not possible for a successful desktop installation.

        MUST HAVE:

        Quake 3 Arena: All other of the quake series as well, but I usually don’t have a problem with them.

        UnrealTournament GOTY: OldUnreal may have this covered finally for me. I’m currently running the Linux tar.bz on both MXLinux “Wildflower” and Linux Mint “Una”. It works flawlessly in both cases, so I have hopes.

        Trilium Notes: It is one of the few things that just works for me, and I have to admit I’m attached to it. I do have a server instance on a laptop, so it will the last challenge, and I only need the desktop instance.

        PaleMoon: just ’cause.

        lighttpd: It works for me.

        CodeTyphon Studio. It’s what I like, it just works.
        I’ve created the liveUSB, hopefully I’ll get it correct to make it persistent on the first try.

        I begin:

        Active Antix Desktop. Persistence failed first attempt. (Do it later.)

        Did I mention I love the default desktop? I’ll change it of course, but it is a very nice default.

        Installed. Everything hardware wise appears to be working.

        It says it will take 4.5 hours to move 670G of data. I’m going to the neighbors for a beer and a doob.

        Files all copied.

        Quake 3 Arena: ioquake3 ran perfectly from the new home. Played a couple of levels. Perfect.

        Unreal Tournament GOTY: The people at oldunreal.com have their shit together. For the first time ever, it just freaking works. Only tested the X64 version, but that is all I use.

        Trilium Notes: Had to do some updates to my server as well, but I am typing this from within TN running happily on antix and synced with my server running on an mxlinux laptop.

        PaleMoon: From the repository. Extensions installed, bookmarks imported.

        lighttpd: Been using it for so long from source that I didn’t know until now that it was in the repo. Still have some basic configuration to do, but its working and visible from my phone.

        CodeTyphon Studio. Forgot about the glibc issues with 7.80. Removed and reinstalled 7.70, works compiling several CodeOcean examples, and a couple of my own smaller things.

        There are still a thousand little things to do of course, but everyone has finally allowed me to have the linux system I want.

        Thank you all very much. You may notice that this isn’t the latest and best hardware.

        Now it’s time to play.

          @stevesr0

          I was hoping you would reply to me. With that you gave me another idea and lo and behold, now it works! 😉
          I simply had to reinstall a few packages from alsa that were removed during the purge of alsa.

          In detail for you:
          My goal was to realize the “full automation” of systemd regarding pipewire and wireplumber described by me above also with antiX. I wanted to avoid the package pipewire-media-session, because that caused problems under siduction. Therefore I did an installation of antiX21-base and changed the repo’s to sid after the first start.
          After that apt update && apt dist-upgrade.

          07-08-2022
          $ sudo apt install pipewire wireplumber libcanberra-gtk0 libcanberra-pulse libspa-0.2-bluetooth
          08-08-2022
          $ sudo apt install pipewire-audio-client-libraries
          10-08-2022
          $ sudo apt purge alsa*
          13-08-2022 (these were removed)
          $ sudo apt install alsa-ucm-conf alsa-topology-conf alsa-utils

          At some point in between, I also installed pavucontrol.
          I hope I didn’t forget anything.

          Thank you my friend!

                1. I have setup / used a lenovo m73 with an I3 and 8gb of ram and dual display port for a set top box.
                Seems to work decently. If a movie disk is needed a usb disk drive gets plugged into to the usb3 port in the back.
                The audio was a bit of a chore to setup. Though once setup it was fine. Ended up using a sound bar later though.
                Bluetooth seems to work ok with the wii remote and usb sensor bar (can leave the wii unplugged most of the time then).
                As far as keyboard and mouse, just used a regular keyboard and mouse with a usb dongle.
                I imagine the wifi would be fine, though I prefer wired so this was never tried.

                2. No, there are other options.
                Mobian seems to be pretty far. There is a ways to go yet for it to be on par with commercially available options (at least on a pinephone); but it does seem to work ok. Albeit a fair bit clunky. I cannot recommend it if you absolutely and constantly depend on your phone. Definitely worth looking at / trying if you have the opportunity.

                  Hi! In line with the previous answers:

                  1- If your mini pc has a X86 CPU (in plain English it’s easier to say that it’s not an ARM CPU, like the Raspeberry pie and similar devices), and has at least 1Gb of RAM, it probably can be used for most common tasks, like surfing the web (using a light browser), streaming Youtube videos (using Smtube, if Youtube plays too slowly on your browser), Office work or playing music files or video files (for very old or low powered CPU’s Xine media player usually produces the best results, allowing full HD videos to play even in single core computers with inbuild video-cards).
                  If you want to play simple games (like solitaire) or use emulators to play ROMS of games you legally own, it probably will do a decent job too… If your device has decent enough resources, it can even run streaming services (like netflix, etc) on your browser, even Google Stadia games…
                  Hum… about your HDMI/bluetooth question- it all depends if your mini pc has the display port you want already built it, if not you can always buy a converter, to plug it in to a TV. If you require bluetooth- you can buy, for cheat a bluetooth dongle, if the device does not already support it- unless you already have a bluetooth keyboard/etc, it’s way cheapper to buy a wireless keyboard and mouse…

                  2- You can’t replace Android/IOS with antiX, because simply antiX is not build to run on the types of CPU’s almost 100% of mobile devices (phones and android tablets) use. You can, however, use some applications to run Linux (via virtual machines), with some degree of success. The last time I tried that was before I started using antiX on my computers…

                  P.

                    Hi
                    1 – if I installed antiX on a mini form PC intended for use as a set top box would it be able to cope with fan temperature control, multiscreen options HDMI, USB c, display port, wifi or bluetooth keyboard with incorporated touchpad or traction ball and so forth?

                    It could be either a low end low cost intel Pentium/Celeron type processor OR i3/i5/i7 range along with their ranges of drives and RAM.

                    and 2 – what is the chance of antiX running on a mobile phone/cell phone?

                    Perhaps an antiX respin might do?

                    Thank you

                      I’m going to be away for several days (coming up soon), so I wanted to make sure to update antiX before leaving; note that today I’m using a very recent Liquorix kernel; they’ve been very good once again after a few rare issues a few updates ago.

                      On this system, every kernel I have works well; I have 4.9, 5.10 antiX kernels (I’ve used the 4.19 kernel with consistently good results here and on my other systems recently too).

                      Here’s what I’m running today:

                          Can’t stay away too long from antiX; definitely looking forward to the Bullseye release working on my newer hardware.
                          Meanwhile antiX still works great on my Dell Inspiron 5558, my Lenovo X201 and two other old HP units; a laptop AND a desktop.

                          Here today with:
