If I install Openbox + tint2 + lxpanel, would it be even lighter than the available IceWm or Min-IceWM?

Short answer (Like anti said): No
Long answer: No because: Openbox is about as light as icewm. If you install and use anything more over it (like tint2 and or lxpanel), there will be more processes being executed by your CPU and taking up space in your RAM.
Min-IceWM is even lighter than IceWM because- sigh, I’ve talked about that manyyy times here in the forum… long story short- because antiX Desktops called [space/zzz/rox]-[Window_Manager] use a File Manager (Spacefm/ zzzfm or rox filer) to display desktop icons (it’s like a transparent File Manager window displaying icons an top of your desktop background)…. An antiX Desktop called only by the Window Manager name (icedm/jwm/fluxbox), does not waste RAM displaying desktop icons… An antix Desktop called min-[Window_Manager] is the same as the previous example, but without loading any extra applications, like conky, volumeicon, the keyboard language tray icon, etc…- so, less stuff being executed by your computers = less resource usage

antiX is already as light as possible, for a full blow Linux Os, with a GUI, a toolbar, a floating window manager, optional desktop icons, etc- the Dev team has been working on that for some 10 years or so, if there’s a way to make it lighter, don’t you think they thought about it already? Unless you are a Linux Dev, created a new extremely light Window Manager, etc, don’t waste your time (I don’t want to sound rude but, let me say also- or the time of folks here in the Forum) trying to “magically” make antiX lighter… Probably the only way you can do that is using lighter apps (a lighter volume manager/clipboard manager/file manager/etc) or cutting on services/applications antix tun – if you don’t need bluetooth, disable it, if you don’t need virtual box stuff, disable that, if you don’t have a printer, disable CUPS, if you don’t change your volume, disable volumeicon, if you don’t use desktop icons, disable them, etc, etc, etc…

Edit: the ft10-transformation package I created installs and configures a tint2 toolbar – using ft10 uses about the same resources of the antiX default desktop because it’s meant to partly replace Conky and volumeicon – the RAM tint2 “wastes” is compensated by the fact that you don’t “need” to have those 2 apps running (since the toolbar incorporates it’s own volumeicon and displays CPU/RAM usage – and that setup took a couple of years to create, on my spare time. Even if you insist on running a conky and volumeicon- icewm+ft10 should use way less RAM than “Openbox + tint2 + lxpanel”

I installed antix on an old dell laptop and was able to set it up exactly as I wanted to. I like conky as I have another newer laptop running MX.
Conky had been running well but disappeared` after I linked it to a secondary screen. I have trawled through the net trying to find a fix but failed to resolve the issue so I decided I would install synaptic, uninstall conky then re install it. (conky-all)

The current situation is that I can only display conky by running it as root. It is not where I want it to be and it doesn’t look the way I want it to. It looks like I will have to start again from scratch.

If it is of any use I have the MX conky config files in my Mega Cloud folder.

I would greatly appreciate some advice as to how to go about cleaning up the mess I have created and setting up conky anew.

You wish to run a splash screen is what you are asking? Like MX linux does.

              What version of antiX? Full,Base,Core?

Need more info. Post a inxi -zv7 so we can take a look at your install.

              Here you go, thanks

Maybe I don’t understand your problem. Are you saying that it looks like you are connected to the internet via WiFi, but you can’t run apt update from a root terminal? I agree with Moddit, reboot with the hardwired ethernet disconnected to force it to use WiFi.

I wonder if there is a hardware switch or software switch that needs to be turned on? Fn F3 might be the key sequence for the software switch on an Acer laptop. You could try rfkill from a terminal to see if it’s blocked?

                $ sudo rfkill
                ID TYPE DEVICE SOFT HARD
                 0 wlan phy0 unblocked unblocked
                 8 bluetooth hci0 unblocked unblocked

Are you using Connman? Is it really online? Run it and Alt-F11 or Right click the title bar and select Fullscreen. Post screenshots of the Status, and Wieless tabs. Look at the Details tab. If you post a screenshot of that, maybe smudge part of the address.

So, what goes wrong when you run an update? From a root terminal, post the results from
                apt update

This is not a live session, it is a full installation. And what I was trying to say is that dillo wont load and apt update wont download files (if not wired)

I’m having difficulty keeping track of the mouse pointer on the screen, because it’s so TINY. I just now measured it while set at its maximum size, and it’s only 3/16″ tall on my screen.

I have the impression that the pointer routines were developed on machines using a 800×600 display, or maybe even 480×360; got defined using specified absolute values of pixels – and, never changed after that.

I’m running a dual-boot setup on a Dell Precision M6300 laptop, with both Antix v21.4, & Win10 pro. Honestly, this mouse issue always makes it feel like a small relief when I switch back to Windows, despite all the shortcomings of Windows. (I can SEE again!)

This machine has a native resolution of 1920×1200, and I’ve already scaled it down to 1440×900.
I really don’t want to reduce the display any further than I’ve already done.

Is there any solution to this TINY pointer problem, other than rescaling the display; i.e., a solution which actually increases the pointer size?

I’m running AntiX v21.4, fully installed on the hard drive in a Dell Precision M6300 laptop.

I’m having a problem installing the Nvidia driver.

Control Centre / Drivers / Nvidia Driver Installer calls up Terminal for its routine. There, it says it’s using su, then asks me for the Root password. BUT, the AntiX 21.4 installation routines didn’t include setting a Root password. I’ve tried entering my user password, and tried entering both “Root” & “root”. None of those works.

Hi everyone, sorry to bother once again but I might have been too cocky believing I could fix the wifi card on my own. This pcmcia wifi card is detected properly and I can connect to a wifi network but when I try to use Dillo or do apt update it doesnt work. I tried to use it closer to the router but makes no difference.
This is a D-Link AirPlus XtremeG DWL-G650 rev. C4 detected properly in device3 as:

I tried to look for other posts but most are pretty old (because the card itself is old), some say to install madwifi driver, I looked for that in synaptic package installer and installed the results but also no difference. This is a 108mbps card which is why I’d like to get it to work. But if it is not possible I could buy a 54mbps card
I’ll send a link I think is usefull

I think ati drivers are working now. How much of an improvement should I see? Also ram usage is normally around 70-80mb at idle which is awesome
I did an inxi -zv7 as root this time to see if everything is fine now 🙂

I always have hundreds, maybe thousands of these strange entries present in dmesg output, but I didn’t care until now (other tasks were more pressing):

This is not new, it probably has started when I switched the notebook from antiX 17.4.1 to 19.3 last year. Interresting thing is: There is no issue with the network connection, eth1 is WLAN, and it connects fast and fine and the connection is most of the time rock stable. Nevertheless, I believe this unnecessary constant background activity takes some system load, which could be used in a better way…

Anybody around who knows what this is, where originates it, and how to stop it?
Or is this behaviour as designed, intended and needed and correct behaviour?

Didn’t find much useful on it searching the forum and the web.
As said before, there is (and was never) no issue with using the eth1 wlan connection, it works fine always, except for these strange log entries.

Cpu usage and temps are because I did this command while it was still updating and upgrading. Now Im wondering if kernel 5.x will work but thats for another day 🙂

                              @ModdIt that sounds interesting ^^

Brand new AntiX user but have some experience with Linux Mint on desktop systems.

Short version: I installed AntiX on a Nuvision Windows tablet. Works fine using a USB hub and external KB along with wired ethernet. Even the touch screen seems to work.

However, does anyone know of what I’m calling an “on-screen” or virtual keyboard program since I won’t normally be attaching a physical keyboard to the device when being used?

Long version: Successfully installed AntiX on a Nuvision Solo 10 Draw, model TM101W610L tablet with 2GB RAM and 32 GB eMMC drive. Decent 1600×1200 (actually might be 1920×1200) display using Intel HD graphics. Intel Atom X5-Z8300 CPU. Looking for an “on-screen” or virtual Keyboard program as the tablet will normally not be used with a physical KB during normal use.

I can change or use a different desktop environment if it helps but remember working with 2GB RAM so prefer nothing requiring heavy lifting. 🙂

PS: Have not tried using wi-Fi or Bluetooth yet.

It is amazing what can be done.
The only limit is your imagination!
Just yesterday I saw a tutorial on youtube, how you can recover an old broken smartphone, attach a monitor to it, and build a wooden case.
                                  Keyboard bluetooth.
The result being a desktop pc alike.
With your idea, that would be a fantastic use of antix! 🙂
