I actually screwed up my previous install on the HP z400 somehow with some dual-boot shenanigans & wanted to give the base install a try. I have multiple back ups & a 128GB Ventoy flash drive.

I’m glad you have multiple backups; that’s something I repeatedly mention here.

Are you becoming a boot loader expert and/or a backup and recovery expert? The more you work with them the more likely you will gain experience if you don’t already have it!

I have a second SSD drive that I store all of my Timeshift backups & have quite a few .ISOs on my 128GB Ventoy drive. This time I made a remastered .ISO that has this same basic setup to go off of. I gotta say, working with antiX has been quite educational & fun.

Thank you for that super quick help.

The thread I cited was this: https://antixlinux.com/forum-archive/cursor-gone-after-update-and-login-solved-t5656.html

The thread you linked is more similar. By now, I did not find an option to boot a different kernel. But I tried different window managers, which made no difference.

Booting in “Safe video” mode worked! Resolution isn’t correct now, but the cursor is here.

I will try to download another iso with older kernels.

I moved over to antiX 23 Beta 1 so we have a relative comparison between antiX 22 and antiX 23; I’m pretty sure they are minimal; I have nearly identical software applications installed and they feel similar in use.

For what it’s worth, occasionally I have inexplicable instances where I can’t use or select the text widget in a Web browser and it even seems to freeze – when I am using MX Linux 21.3, but this has never happened during the entire antiX 21 – 23 lifecycle. It’s sporadic and it’s not a constant thing with MX Linux either, but I’ve experienced it a few times, NEVER here.

Too bad I’ve not been able to isolate or determine the root cause; I’d like to see it fixed if I could help in any way.

As for us, all is very well!

I have built a new legacy ISO, based on antiX 19.4 FULL packages, for both 32 and 64 bits.

            Changes:
            * kernel 4.4.0-264 (thanks to anticapitalista’s efforts).
            * Fixed the “invalid EXPRESSIG” error by updating the antiX signatures package.
            * Aprox 1.3 GBs ISO. Now it is MUCH bigger to include almost the exact same packages as antiX 19.4 Full (includes seamonkey, libreoffice, etc.).
            * Renamed the project to “pseudo-antiX” to not dirty the antiX name, as this is a very inferior product compared to the current antiX 19.4 release.
            * This release DOES NOT include the improved live system changes (as it is based on the antiX 19 iso-template-antix_19.18 initdr and boot)
            * Included a sis xorg driver that comes from the antiX 15-16 (jessie) repos. Hopefully this will make it possible to use real SIS xorg driver, and better results than vesa.
            * Up to date packages.

            i386 ISO: pseudo-antix-19 legacy bet3 (32 bits) (md5sum)
            amd64 ISO: pseudo-antix-19 legacy bet3 (64 bits) (md5sum)

            And up with it!

            Hi Xecure,

I know this sounds rude, but would it be possible to create an actual customized base version of antiX22?

I have problems with my small Nettop under antiX22 to reach a reasonable resolution.

            Greetings

              ————————————————————————
              The Debian Project https://www.debian.org/
              Updated Debian 11: 11.7 released press@debian.org
              April 29th, 2023 https://www.debian.org/News/2023/20230429
              ————————————————————————

The Debian project is pleased to announce the seventh update of its
stable distribution Debian 11 (codename “bullseye”). This point release
mainly adds corrections for security issues, along with a few
adjustments for serious problems. Security advisories have already been
published separately and are referenced where available.

Please note that the point release does not constitute a new version of
Debian 11 but only updates some of the packages included. There is no
need to throw away old “bullseye” media. After installation, packages
can be upgraded to the current versions using an up-to-date Debian
              mirror.

Those who frequently install updates from security.debian.org won’t have
to update many packages, and most such updates are included in the point
              release.

New installation images will be available soon at the regular locations.

Upgrading an existing installation to this revision can be achieved by
pointing the package management system at one of Debian’s many HTTP
mirrors. A comprehensive list of mirrors is available at:

Then I removed the dbus runit service.

What side effect did you notice this step has on other programs which expect dbus service to be started? Would be great to know which programs actually need it and will fail without finding dbus service running. Did you see everything still work as before, or fail some functionality in some programs now?

                Another update:

On an INSTALLED antiX23 b1 system: works great with ceni for internet, with connman and dbus runit services removed.

Then I took an isosnapshot of the working installed system.
I then ran live of the isosnapshot.

                It was bad!

First, during boot, I saw that internet interfaces failed. Once it was booted up, no internet as expected. When I launch roxterm, and everytime I launch roxterm, an error message related to dbus popped up.

I tried to launch runit-service-manager to try to add dbus runit service. But a pop up error says do I want to remember the password. I typed in the password, but the error message repeats in a loop. So I cannot add dbus in this live system.

I was wondering, why is it good with the installed system to remove dbus, but why is dbus absolutely essential for the live system?

I went ahead and did a comparison with sysvinit.

I went back to my antiX21 and antiX19 sysvinit systems and switched the wifi from connman to ceni and removed dbus.

In my antiX21 system after the wifi switch and removing dbus, booting caused a boot “error” message that avahi did not start properly. But after boot, I did not see any performance change. So in startup services in control center, I disabled avahi and rebooted. This time, there was another “error” message saying that elogind did not start properly. But after boot, I did not see any noticeable performance issues. So I then also disabled elogind and rebooted. Booting did not show any error changes after dbus, avahi, and elogind were disabled. Moreover, I did not notice any performance changes in the usual programs that I normally run.

This may be an advantage of runit over sysvinit. In sysvinit, the various startup programs are more interconnected than in runit, in my experience.

In my antiX19 system, there was no avahi daemon in the startup service. But I removed elogind, and rebooted, and saw no noticeable performance issues.

This exercise was good for me because I realized that many startup services are not essential to what I normally do in my antiX systems. Instead of blindly accepting the defaults, I am starting to think a little bit more critically about specific startup services.

As an aside, switching wifi from connman to ceni in my antiX19 system was particularly great for me. I have been using ndiswrapper with connman in my antiX19 system. About 1 out of 2 times, there is a wifi connect failure after boot using connman with ndiswrapper driver. With ceni, the wifi connect is more robust. Although ceni wifi connect is noticeably slower in antiX19. Ceni wifi connect in antiX21 and antiX23 a1 and b1 are fast.

First of all, I’d like to thank all alpha1 testers.
This beta would not have been possible without your help.

Remember it is a *beta* so

Do not use this on critical systems.
The default Debian repos point to bookworm, but antiX ones to testing. This means Repo_Manager will not work correctly.
This will change to bookworm once the Debian hard freeze begins.

I will keep the file there for a few weeks, but then remove/delete it.

                    Added:

Is there anyone using a 64bit computer that fails to boot using the ‘modern’ 6.1 kernel?
If everyone(?) is able to boot using the 6.1 kernel then there is no need for 5.10 to be on the iso, right?

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit – leaner and meaner.

                      Greetings, everyone.
After years of using Mepis and MX, I decided to give antiX a try.
I downloaded the full 64-bit .iso via torrent and created a live USB with Rufus.
However, when I boot the live USB and press Enter to boot into the OS, I get a message that there has been an error and that I have to load the kernel first.
I don’t know if it’s a coincidental error but it put me off the whole process. Is that an issue or what…?

                      Thank in advance.

                          Hello,
I have had this problem several times lately and unfortunately have not found a solution yet.

I am trying to boot/install the downloaded antix iso image that I have set up on a usbstick using the antix “live usb maker” tool on several lenovo pcs.

The usb stick is recognized by the pc and i also get into the usb antix boot menu, but as soon as i want to boot i get the error messages on the photo.

This makes no sense to me because the pc had recognized the usb.

                            Dear anticapitalista,

                            I have 2 installations with antiX 23.
                            One installation in [fr_BE].
                            One installation in [en_US].
I start with my [fr_BE] installation
I received 77 packages to update. For me, this is the gamma version of antiX 23!
I did not follow the instructions given on the forum for upgrades.
By default, Debian said “No” for package updates.
                            I answered “Yes”.
I didn’t lose my main menu in French.
                            Congratulations anticapitalista.
Here is the list of packages received for my installation [fr_BE].
I noticed right away the new typographical apostrophes for some programs. Thanks to this, the command line control centre works. I discover new windows in the terminal.
                            Congratulations anticapitalista.
Well, I haven’t finished analysing all the packages.
                            1) But I notice that in the main menu, the line “Personal Menu Help Video” is not updated. The translation made 5 years ago was very bad! I put the right translation 13 days ago in Transifex.
                            2) The “User Manager” program was translated on Monday, April 3, 2023 in Transifex (this is the “antix-user” file). The changelog button in the “User Manager” program shows that the update was done on Sunday 9 April 2023. Not all translations are in French! Why not? I hope it’s not a problem with the variables / code in the English file that was not updated to take the translations. This has happened in the past.

Thanks anticapitalista for all your valuable work. I’ll come back later if I have any other remarks for the [fr_BE] installation.

                            Best regards,
                            Wallon

Thank you for this detailed explanation! The newer versions of conky differs widely on the reported RAM used compared to the (much older) version used in antiX. I prefer the old version because it aligns more closely with that reported by ps_mem.py, which is the tool I always use for comparison purposes. But it always throws me off for a while when I boot into MX and see high memory usage reported by conky, before I remember it cant be directly compared to antix.

If you want something that is totally unambiguous, just use free.

That’s in essence all inxi does except it uses the /proc/meminfo interface to that same data and parses it since it’s cleaner data and avoids creating the subshell.

I don’t know how ps_mem.py does it, but it doesn’t appear that is trying to do what you are looking for since they say it’s a per program count, I’d skip that and just use a consistent tool like free directly, or if you want to use the same column values of that as inxi uses, that’s going to give the same result more or less.

Note that this changed in 2020, and as someone in that issue thread notes, it was fixed back then in neofetch, inxi, and htop. That was 3.1.09 2020-11-11 for inxi, FIX 4.

                              4. Issue #236 by ChrisCheney pointed out that inxi had never updated its default
/proc/meminfo value to use the newer MemAvailable as default if present, which
led to incorrect memory used values showing up. That’s because back in the old
days, we had to construct a synthetic Memory used from MemFree, buffers, cache,
etc, but that wasn’t always right, since sometimes the cache actually isn’t
available, often is, but not always.

                              https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/34e431b0ae398fc54ea69ff85ec700722c9da773

This commit on the kernel explains it pretty clearly. Thanks Chris for bringing
                              this to our attention.

If I were you, I’d use what the kernel guys created for this and rely on that, that’s what I did in inxi. I assume conky is fixed by now, if not, that’s odd.

                                  Good morning Wallon!

There is an update of the file on Transifex.

No. The resource was last updated 5. April 2023, 0:39 UTZ
This update hadn’t overwritten any of your translations.
No update was done after this, and the transifex site shows precisely this date.

I used a filter to request all translations made after 07/04/2023.
124 strings were overwritten with new translations for FR.
Often these are not my translations.

Because of your statement I have now manually checked each french translation entry of the resource which was changed after 7.4.2023 in transifex translation editor. Result: All of them are your translations, nobody besides you has changed a single string, not in French and not in Belgian French language. For convenience I’ve added the unstable transifex entry numbers additionally to the entry keys. These entry numbers are subject of change and may not match later on.

In Belgian French there were some additional entries to the above:

No other translator shows up in the results for this resource filtered by this date, not in French and not in Belgian French.

I have spent days correcting all the translations. My work is lost. My name does not even appear in the history.

I can’t confirm this. Your name is present in history for all strings you have edited. (Btw, are you aware the most recent entry in the transifex history is the at head of the list, not at the bottom as one might suspect?) When filtering the French translations of the resource for translator:Wallon mostly every single entry was translated by you. I don’t see a single string of your translated strings which has been been overwritten. Please let me know the string keys you are referring to.

The best example, I had corrected all the apostrophes. Now I have a lot of English apostrophes that have come back in the translations. They are not my translations anymore.

„No results found”. So I’m not sure what you are talking about. There isn’t a single English ASCII Apostrophe or ASCII Double quoting present in the translations of this resource, not in French and also not in Belgian French. So obviously all your translation work is present.

I don’t have this problem for the other projects I translate in Transifex.

I repeat, it is impossible for a translator to work with this procedure.
Should I wait for antiX 24 to translate antiX 23? I am sure that the antiX 23 files will not be overwritten when antiX 24 is released.

This is not acceptable. We are all volunteers.

Sorry, I don’t understand what precisely you are complaining about. Again, please put up here a list of string keys (doesn’t need to be complete, some example keys would be enough already) which have been changed by whoever after you (and not the TM auto-copied old stuff from another resource) have translated them.

I admire what you are doing, but this is really too much.

On the contrary, I do admire your great work fixing all the Apostrophes, many thanks for this, and I promise you to do my very best to find out what causes the trouble for you. By now I don’t understand how you came to your findings, results and statements. Sorry again.

                                  Yours
