Non sse2 cpu limits browser choices as far as I understand.

When I fought the Acer T180 single core desktop, For some reason. USB boot quit working. A puppy linux user mentioned to me.

Flash-drive manufacturers changed the firmware specs in the mid-2010s. Where they used to be seen AS flashdrives, older BIOS versions subsequently began to see them as a USB-HDD…..meaning they were expecting to find the “bridge card” all external HDDs use to convert the drive’s SATA output to a USB interface. Of course, flash drives don’t have it, do they?
And they call this “progress”. Just another way to persuade ya to chuck a perfectly good box in the trash, and shell out for summat new that like as not won’t work any better…..

Then the dvdrw got real picky till I cleaned the lens.
Finally shoe horned antiX 21 64 bit full iso off of dvdrw drive.
This was not 32 bit full iso. But same principle applies.

So on these older units. Dust tends to collect over time. Then I usually have to run the

As title says, now one gets this error:
          ping: socket: Operation not permitted

Had to do long google search and also comparisons with previous 21 release, and finally found this as solution:

          setcap cap_net_raw+ep /usr/bin/ping
          getcap /usr/bin/ping # To confirm

With this ping is configured just like how it was on AntiX 21. Out of the box, getcap command shows no output at all, meaning now it has no “capacities” at all and thus the error.

What happened here? Why did you remove ping’s permissions to be run as normal user?

Also an additional “complain”: now connman comes only in English; no change of language when selecting different locales/language to boot…

          Thanks.

            Hello mfmig2000.

Welcome to antiX Linux and the forum.

I don’t know how to write in English and I send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything, if your native language is not English, please translate my original text in Brazilian Portuguese language directly into your language with the help of internet translators.

When you are able to get antiX to boot on your computer, please read my real welcome that I usually do for all newcomers here on the forum. This reading will help you a lot.

The whole configuration is Athhlon XP 1700+ with 1 GB DDR1 and ATI Radeon 256 MB videocard
Processor is a non SSE2 one – could it be due to this?

I’ve been able to initialize antiX with the ISOs Remaster antiX 21 Full 32 and 64-bit with Kernel 4.4.0-296 on computers similar to yours. Download the 64bit ISO which has the name “remaster_antiX-21_sysvinit_x64_full_kernel_4.4.0-296_01-15-2022.iso”, it seems this processor is 64bit. If you manage to install this ISO, you can update antiX 21 to version 22 via the update.

How about testing whether antiX-19 (based on Debian 10 = Buster) works?
Buster’s LTS’ EOL is June 2024, Extended LTS is June 2029.

antiX-19 series ISOs can be downloaded from ‘sourceforge’ (which had a bad reputation with some programs being tampered with); I did try two other mirrors but they did not contain it anymore.
You have two options to try: 1) 19.5 with 4.9 kernel (from 2022 = more up-to-date packages) and 2) 19.4 with 4.19 kernel (from 2021 = older packages).

              https://sourceforge.net/projects/antix-linux/files/Final/antiX-19/

Since you can experiment, you may try to install antiX-19 in dual/multi-boot and try to upgrade it to Debian 11 a.k.a. Bullseye.
This would probably be lengthy and tedious but it could result into a working system similar to up-to-date antiX-21.

Also, did you check-sum the downloaded ISOs for integrity before creating the live DVD?

Other than that… you may search the forum for ISO/USB boot issues; I recall posts discussing passing boot-options manually in case of problems.

BTW, there is no (official) antiX-20; only antiX-21 and antiX-22 (at least so far).

Could you try to do the following?
                EITHER
                1) Mount/open the ISO; e.g. the file can be “entered” in ‘mc’ (Midnight Commander) and the top-level directory contains text/ascii file ‘version’, also ‘EFI/BOOT/’ and ‘boot/grub’ should contain both x386/32-bit and x86_64/64-bit variants of some files/folders.
                OR
                2) Boot the “bad” ISOs on another device.
Then verify whether the “content/system” is indeed 64-bit as mentioned in the splash screen?

When I try to boot any of the less than full isos, I get an error on a splash screen:

This is a 32-bit computer. You cannot use 64-bit software on it.

                  This happens with:

                  antiX-22-net_386-net.iso
                  antiX-22_386-base.iso
                  antiX-22_386-core.iso

The antiX-22_386-full.iso boots and installs just fine.

Not an expert, but what happens if you select another kernel at boot?

Also, the few times an installation has failed for me, it was due to a corrupted ISO/USB.

                      Hi argonaut469,
antiX is like many an old house house, a place full of tools, objects and
                      materials.
Once you work out how to get past the, its different phase and make your own
personal custom version out of it, in my opinion unbeatable.

Please do get used to making ISO Images of your system and when running live remastering
                      after bigger changes or updates.

If you run live and remaster changes but have no persistence setup you can explore experiment break things,
just reboot and you are back to work. Just save to live usb storage or other stick or internal disk.

If you want to live on the wild side run antiX sid. Its mostly harmless.

When windows do unexpected things it is usualy the application remembering last session.
Or a user who just switches off power instead of waiting a second or so for shutdown.

I have only ever had trouble with things not working correctly on a freshly installed users
system with corrupted download. The sha256 sum was found wildly off at start of troubleshooting.

Hello to the antiX-forum and thank you to the makers of this lightweight linux, which I think will bring this old tablet (linx7) being useful again.

Few problems, which I cant get my head around after a day of searching, installing and reinstalling:
                        – No sound.
                        – No bluetooth.
                        – No battery level indication.

These all work with MX Linux straight out of the box with no setting up, so it shouldn’t be a big problem?

I did the “inxi -zv7” on both antiX and MX:

                        Robin

Just for comparison, I’ve installed latest debian default kernel on antiX 21, since I’ve read while searching for a solution for this nouveau issue in 5.10 kernel from above, that these issues should vanish in 5.15 kernel magically. In the repos doesn’t seem to exist any 5.15 kernel, so I installed latest available default debian kernel from the backport repos:

                          linux-image-5.19.0-0.deb11.2-686-pae:
                            Installiert: 5.19.11-1~bpo11+1
                            Installationskandidat: 5.19.11-1~bpo11+1
                            Versionstabelle:
                           *** 5.19.11-1~bpo11+1 100
                                  100 http://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye-backports/main i386 Packages
                                  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

And what should I say, actually the issue from the 5.10 kernel is fixed, it boots antiX straight up to desktop. It even uses nouveau driver on a speed and clean view I’ve never seen from nouveau ever before here. This comes very near already to the proprietary nvidia drivers. Will need to get some further stress testing, but it looks promising, really. For now it seems to run absolutely stable. Maybe I can get rid of the proprietary nvidia stuff in near future and switch to 5.x kernel series for everyday work… I’m writing these lines from this very system right now. It’s amazing! Here the details:

So, maybe this piece of information contains some hints how to fix the issue on 5.10 antiX kernel, or what other options exist? Would rather like to run an antiX kernel than this debian one…

I experimented with ISO snapshot and remastering today on Live USB.

When I created an ISO snapshot, it worked fine. However, if I then attempted to remaster that specific USB containing the ISO snapshot, it would boot and I’d see the booting display messages, but when the system started the graphical user interface, I’d see a blinking cursor just as it started, then the cursor went away and everything was blank for as long as I’d wait; however my usual disk images and my working USB images boot immediately, so for some reason there is a problem with the graphical boot parameters for the remastered ISO snapshot.

Back with the antiX version from which I built the successful ISO image; after rerunning Live USB Maker to recreate a working ISO snapshot.

                            Here’s the latest configuration:

                              Hi all,

I forgot that you can mark packages NOT to be installed, by using apt-mark hold followed by the package name!

I just live booted the antiX-22 iso, went fine. Then I ran apt-mark hold elogind and apt-mark hold libelogind0.

Didn’t work because I hadn’t updated the repositories.

But after I ran sudo apt update, these commands yielded a “response” package on hold.

Obviously, you still need to scrutinize the results of an apt full-upgrade before deciding whether to install it.

                                antiX 19, iso-snapshot-antix 0.4.10.1
After compression method is set to zstd, there don’t seem to be any immediate issues, but after iso-snapshot is closed, it fails to start again, no error message is shown. Output in the terminal:

QStandardPaths: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set, defaulting to '/tmp/runtime-root'
                                iso-snapshot version: 0.4.10.1
                                +++ QString Settings::getFilename() +++
                                uname -r
                                grep ^CONFIG_SQUASHFS_ZSTD=y /boot/config-4.9.0-326-antix.1-amd64-smp

After the compression method is changed to another value manually in /etc/iso-snapshot.conf, it works normally again.
(And I think zstd shouldn’t have been in the list in the first place if it’s not in this kernel?)

                                  Hi,

pragmatic temporary workaround: borrow a USB mouse, if possible.
But most importantly, please, do provide more information about the antiX version and your HW for more skillful forum members.

                                  0) Verify integrity of the ISO download (checksums, e.g. ‘sha256sum <ISO filename>’ and compare with the value available at the download links).
If it differs, your download got corrupted and you need to download and create the live media again.
                                  1) Which ISO do you use (post e.g. the filename)?
                                  2) Which kernel did you boot into (output of ‘uname -a’; antiX contains an older and a newer kernel to cover wide range of HW)?
                                  3) HW info – output of ‘inxi -Fxz’ when running live or at least description of your HW.
You can redirect to a file ‘inxi -Fxz > ~/INXI.txt’ and copy this file.
