Hi, RaspBerry Pi must be 32-bits only or i’d have tried it already, and i do recall about a version for PCs somewhat.
There’s a dozen HardInfo reports i still need to compare so i can decide what’s next, but right now the late Linux Mint Xfce release seems fine, so far. Its LXDE alternative didn’t “stick” and i was disapointed myself. The same happen with Debian’s LXDE as well and i wanted something different from Xfce, with memory limitations in mind, in hope the numbers will tell an interesting story later, eventually.
The challege gets complicated by the USB flash tools multiplying. Sometimes Rufus won’t work in either of its two mode: ISO vs DD. YUMi-UEFi started giving me hope lately, then i discovered Ventoy then Balena Etcher… I verified my HardInfo list of reports and antiX made it at least this far, and it’s not a long list when accounting for the other exceptions. Chances are antiX may be ready in a few revisions the same as Mint which ended up requiring a replacement after it’s initial install in 2018, followed by Linuxium that damaged the ESP (FAT32) boot-loader partition, as i recall.
If it were for a 3rd-party there now should need to be a collection of USB cards, not knowing for sure if the regular (not UEFi-ia32) system can sucessfully reboot and load once it installed in “Live” mode.
I’m one who likes to keep a Plan-B around anyway, maybe sooner than i may suspect; so que sera sera!

However, if you are feeling adventurous, you can edit the /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg file, to shorten the timeout.
#-------------------------------------------------------------------- # This is the isolinux.cfg and/or syslinux.cfg file # It controls the main menu in the bootloader on the live system. # You can edit it to change the main bootloader menu on a LiveUSB. # If you are not careful you can break the live system and prevent # it from booting. #-------------------------------------------------------------------- UI gfxboot gfx-cpio readme.msg timeout 3000 default custom MENU TITLE Welcome to antiX-21_386-base (Grup Yorum) ...The timeout 3000 shown there means it will boot in 300 seconds (5 minutes).
On one of my special-purpose live-usb’s, I set up my preferences on another computer, and saved the options (F8).
Then manually set the timeout to 30 (only three seconds). That’s one way to do it…

Many thanks, anticapitalista, for the security patched kernel upgrade.
While installing it using apt instead of GUI-packageinstaller I’ve got an error message during installation. Don’t know what to make of it, or whether it is serious or whether it’s just the usual ambient noise of kernel installation. The “trick” is to select as many “efficient” applications as possible.
Also someone recently did an analytical comparison between antiX and MX Linux, because we “share” some of our developers and tools for certain things.
The antiX kernel is definitely “tuned” differently, and more specifically for older systems, and with respect to systems that have limited resources.It *may* be possible to find a small number of distributions that consume fewer resources than antiX, but 1) There are not very many of them, and 2) Those that are even leaner definitely have fewer features and more limited capabilities.
I’ve been personally using this distribution since I first saw a post many years ago in the old MEPIS Lovers Forum, describing a new, lighter system that would run in RAM after booting directly from CD. That distribution was antiX – more than fifteen years ago! While the size and scope of the distribution has grown a little bit over the years, it’s always remained as lean and efficient as possible, attempting to strike a balance so that it will work with systems that are “relatively new”, but definitely aimed squarely at systems that are 5-10 years old, sometimes older than that!
Many of our users can speak volumes about how they run with older systems. Until 2018 I had two computers dating back to the 2007-2008 time period, and antiX was one of only 3-4 distributions I could still run on their 32-bit processors. Prior to 2009 I had a 2000-ish vintage Dell Dimension 4100 desktop and I had my own customized version of antiX Core that I ran on it. So there is a LOT you can accomplish with antiX!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

It’s good to know that antiX works for you, even on a newer computer.
I tested lots of distros, before choosing antiX, and I consider that antiX is not the lightest Linux distribution available (that probably should be Tiny Core?) but, in my humble opinion antiX is the lightest fully fledged Linux OS – it makes no concessions- it really is a fully working Debian derivative- any of the tens of thousands (hundreds of thousands?) packages that is available for Debian (or in appimage or flatpak formats) should work on antiX unless it has systemd as it’s dependency. In practice, the only Linux software you can’t run in antiX are those that are only available in snap format, and little less.Even if the “modern kernel” is not available in any of the available antiX ISOs, you can probably install it using Package Installer and then boot from it.
Window Managers, and IceWM in particular have a lot going on for them – they are modular are usually very costumizable. I tested all 3 floating window managers that antiX includes and I’m a bit divided between Fluxbox and IceWM – Fluxbox seems to run on a tiny bit less resources and I do love the included Numix theme. But IceWM now even includes a (sometimes buggy, at least on my computers) option to automatically tile windows (just like Windows does, now).
If you want all the simplicity of Icewm, and more a modern toolbar and menu (with search capability), the ft10-transformation pack handles that for you- so antiX can be as light as possible, and also have everything a desktop user normally expects from a User Interface.P.

Eu reinicializei o computador e obtive a resolução 1024×768.

Bingo! I successfully started a live system of Antix-21_386_base from USB by using a plopboot 5.0.15 boot CD, and am just about to install it.
However, Antix-21 should also be bootable from CD/DVD. Maybe one member of the Antix crew can apply some patch into the next ISO update.cheers Hans

Hi PPC,
tnx for your very fast response.
I read the portuguese text in your link. As i understood, the person made these remasters because of problems with SiS and VIA graphics. I forgot to mention that my TM290 has ATi Radeon 350 graphics. Unfortunately, he only offers the full Antix versions, which heve to be burned on a DVD. I use(d) the base version which fits on a 800MB oversize CD.
Furthermore, i tried to learn about that file ldlinux.c32, ans searched the web. It is obviously called by the bootloader (Syslinux 6.03) in a very early stage of the boot process. I think, at this stage the grapphics driver if not yet active. I’m afraid that the problem can only be solved by altering someting in the Antix-21 iso file, which is far above my abilities, as I’m not a Linux coder.cheers Hans

Question:
Why does “splash=v” in grub boot entries result with some computer halting with “Waiting for /dev to be fully populated…?”Context is using the antix-core ISO on a flash drive for installation.
I found the solution googling to remove “splash=v” from the grub boot entry, but I would like to know root cause to determine the appropriate solution. Removing it has the added benefit of getting rid of the console border which increases console/tmux real estate.
Thank you!

Hello, I have searched the forums for a straightforward reply to the above to no avail. I used ISO-Snapshot and Live USB Maker to try to install a replica of my current AntiX to a second machine. Unfortunately I can only boot to the live system (which works perfectly well) but was unable to find how to install the Snapshot ISO to disk. Am I missing something? Will appreciate any help you can provide.

$ sudo desktop-menu –write-out-global
$ LANGUAGE=en sudo apt update
$ LANGUAGE=en sudo apt upgrade

Hello linuxdaddy and mr. Brian.
The computer that has the GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x video card is far from me and should arrive at my house in the next few days. I had to send another computer on loan so that the person wouldn’t have access to the internet and to the work they do with antiX.
As soon as I have access to this computer, I can try to make your tutorial. Thank you so much for teaching us how to do this step by step.

I had written at the beginning of this thread that these remasters fall far short of the “pseudo-antix-19 legacy bet3 with Kernel 4.4.0-264” ISOs that @Xecure built from âBuild-isoâ, which I don’t have the slightest idea of ââhow to use âBuild-isoâ.Linuxdaddy, if you have booted the remastered ISO in your language and even so the menus are displayed in Brazilian Portuguese language, I ask you to click on the menu “Recarregar o Menu” in pt-BR or “Update Menu” or “Refresh Menu” or “Reload the Menu” in en (I’m not sure how it’s written in English language). If it still doesn’t update the menus to the correct language, try applying the command in Terminal that Xecure taught:
$ sudo desktop-menu –write-out-global
If that doesn’t work, maybe the commands Wallon taught in the other topic can make it work, because when I used these commands, all menus started to be displayed in English in antiX initialized in Brazilian Portuguese language.
$ LANGUAGE=en sudo apt update
$ LANGUAGE=en sudo apt upgrade
If even after the commands in the terminal the menus are still displayed in Brazilian Portuguese, I will have to redo the two remastered ISOs starting with the default English language of antiX. I did not imagine that this could happen, of texts in Brazilian Portuguese language being displayed in antiX initialized in another language. That’s why I did all the steps that @ensabahnur taught me with the Brazilian Portuguese language workspace, because it would be much better for me to be able to understand each step. Now that I know the steps and I have everything written down, if I have to, I do the whole process again. I just hope that if I have to redo two more remasters (32bit and 64bit) that the menus are not permanently in English language when the ISOs are booted in other languages.
If it’s just the two desktop icons that are in Brazilian Portuguese language, the truth is that I have no idea why they are being displayed in Brazilian Portuguese instead of being displayed in the language that the remastered ISO was initialized . When I used the ISO Snapshot program to create each of the ISO images, I chose the option âResetting accounts (for distribution to others)â (these are the texts of entries 19 and 88 of the Transifex iso-snapshot file) which I understand that equates to âResetting root and demo user accounts and passwords (to distribute the ISO image to others)â. Mr Brian, this problem shouldn’t happen, should it? Anyway, if only the two desktop icons are displaying the texts in Brazilian Portuguese language, I imagine they are the File Manager and the antiX Help (“Gerenciador de Arquivos” and the “Ajuda do antiX” in Portuguese), the user can rename them to their respective language, but it’s something which I wouldn’t want people to have to do manually.
Just curiosity and willpower to learn are not enough, we need training, otherwise, all the knowledge acquired by the most experienced in GNU/Linux will be lost with them, when they are no longer here.

Hi, Marcelo- I took a look at the log you posted: it seems to be some kind of error connect to the sound (Alsa)- the complete error, in English is:
LCplaybackAlsa_mixerProc: mmap commit error: broken pipeLooking for that error on-line, I found out that at least in another game (flightgear) it had something to do with the compilation of the version that had that problem, on slow devices that could not keep up, as expected, with what the code wants to perform… If it’s that, it seems that there is no solution, at least not when using antiX 19.X… Probably the games that have that problem can run ok in antiX 21 – my advice, is, if possible, trying to boot from a live antiX 21 iso and then try to install the offending game- and see if it works… Probably no one will recompile any piece of software to antiX 19 (based in Debian 10, when the current version is now Debian 11, in which antiX 21 is based)…
If possible, you could try downgrading supertuxkart to a previous version or try an appimage version.P.

Curious if you tried Sparky Linux yet. Since you Like LXDE.
Actually i still don’t know if i like LXDE just yet as i’ve seen it in LIVE mode only…
Apparently i’ve downloaded SparkyLinux v6.0 because of it’s duality supporting both the i686 and x86_64 material, hoping to find ‘bootia32.efi’ in case a crude patch might prove necessary, besides also copying some /i386-efi/ resources as i vaguely reecall. Somewhere it mentioned LxQt, no big deal. FossaPup95 might have worked wonders if it could have completed its “frugal” installation, which inspired my a desire to install Ventoy on the eMMC and simply swap .ISOs around instead of enduring the whole patience-challenging process. My notes say i had to pass 4 menu levels before accessing the display settings with SparkyLinux, by the way…
Right now i wish i could better explain issues that made me move further with even more testing but this i ain’t getting any younger myself. These things can become exhausting when failures pile up and there’s no reward joys to compensate… Zorin felt promissing at 1st, still didn’t stick neither. Etc., etc.
Does some unexpected “HCi0” timeout error matter? Also, more input: how about including GrUB-Customizer as pre-installed!
Mint and Fedora too slow, Bodhi’s ‘ubi-console-setup’ utility crashed. Ubuntu Mate v20.04.3 (LTS Focal) installed fine, well enough to auto-selectect the proper screen anyway, but i removed it a couple days ago once tired of blank/black displays then BlueTooth problems. Another Lubuntu tweak is AntiVirusLiveCD v39.0 of February 20, still on the to-list so far.
Not to mention the “Extra Luxury Edition” in LXDE wasn’t exactly feeling like an invitation – i’m reading notes at random and there’s 4 ~ 5 times more to remind myself and it’s now diner time…
Salix, ZenWalk, Absolute… LibreElec, Debian Live! … Slakware v15.0 itself, etc.
Appologies again, thanks for sharing feedback while expressing enthousiasm and moral support. The guy’s energy (mine…) may just prove somewhat depleeted after having the initial climax from hope. Long ago Windows was the same and DOS before it, in any case each day needs a fair dose of victory to save our sanity.
Good day, have fun!!

Eu vou adicionar a tradução adaptada do seu texto que eu destaquei em negrito na legenda do vĂdeo, eu vou fazer tambĂ©m o adendo nos textos do arquivo âantix-bootscreen-helpmenuâ do Transifex, eu espero que o anticapitalista possa utilizar a versĂŁo melhorada nas prĂłximas imagens ISOs do antiX.if there is a way to upload those translated captions back up to youtube, Iâm interested for sure.
Grato.
