“If you come straight from windows to antiX you’ll be lost.”

Depends on how you look at that, Kids can and do install antix 21 Full with minimal or no help. Users I look after, with one exception, do own install.

Boot live, Have a quick read in the forum, Update, add a few more applications from the application installer if wanted, install to disk.
On most systems setting up claws and wifi is a minor hurdle. Slowest about 1,5 hour to get a running system with office
      and Browser in user language.
Using the application, Transformation pack, customising is very user friendly which should make setup to user taste a less involving task..

Installing windoze from scratch and updating is an extremely time consuming pain, remember it is also pretty much bare of applications.
Getting to a setup comparable to antiX with win10 took me more than a day, the updating process took hours. On the same computer, different disk
      to keep comparison fair.

What is usualy disregarded is that windoze users would in many cases not even manage to install a fresh setup, many just go out and buy a new computer
when things go wrong. On several occasions I have been given devices, even for silly things like forgotten passwords, at least up to win 10 really easy
to fix, as long as BIOS password is not required to boot that is. Secure system, no way.

        Hi @madibi,
I don’t know if I understand your question completely.
Perhaps you can go about it a different way.

Instead of installing on a USB, maybe doing an iso snapshot of your system and then use the live usb maker to create the live iso of your system on usb.

I just checked the live iso snapshot of my system booted up live. I do not see the grub.cfg file in the /boot/grub folder.

There is no “special” Grub on a live ISO.
It so that on this antiX-ISO all necessary files for Grub (Bios) or U(efi) are present.

With the boot of the Live-ISO this recognizes whether it is on Bios or UEFI. is booted.
You can “look inside” the ISO with the command.

          # mkdir /mnt/disk
          # mount -o loop /media/Distris/antiX/antiX-21_x64-base.iso /mnt/disk

          Leaving
          # umount /mnt/disk

in mount the live ISO into your system and see what files it contains.

I don’t understand your question about what you want to do.

            Hi,

I am not quite sure whether I understand your post correctly.
            1) You had installed antiX in the past on a drive. No (extra) partition(ing) was necessary and I assume you did a full-disk install.
            2) Now, you want to install whole system (root ‘/’ + ‘/home’) in a single (joint) partition.

            EDIT:
I did test the installer, selecting Custom install (i.e. not full-disk), selected root partition and the installation proceeds.
I.e. selecting the root partition (and not selecting a separate home partition if you wish the system to be on a single-partition) seems to be all that is needed.
The below applies only if you run into troubles later.

There are posts on antiX forum that some people found the new installer somewhat confusing.
            END OF EDIT

            Please post additional information:
            A) Output of ‘lsblk’ (or screenshot of gparted) when in live media.
            B) Information about the RAID mode (e.g. available/accessible in BIOS).
            C) Did you attempt to install in UEFI/legacy mode?
            D) Output of ‘inxi -Fxz’ when booted in the live media.
            E) Did you verify the integrity of the downloaded ISO (using check-sums)?

This YouTube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_Xz4GJO9Bo may help (copied from this post https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/troubles-install-antix-21-final/#post-73906 ).

Regarding compatibility with RAID SSD Nvme drive:
I had issues installing antiX and Fedora in RAID-mode of a new Dell laptop and I had to set the RAID to AHCI in BIOS, please see (related link in my 1st post):
            https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/install-at-dell-latitude-7410-n62p4/
I did a dual boot with Windows and fortunately, the Windows survived without much tinkering.
DISCLAIMER: Switching to AHCI may damage the other OS you plan to dual-boot with and it may require some work in the OS for it to work properly! Backup your data first.

Also, a quick web search ‘Debian RAID SSD Nvme Drive’ indicates that SSD Nvme drives (did) have issues (in the past).

Hi roland, I am not sure if smart readout is affected when you add a partition
to the path. Correct is path and device only.

Please repeat the command just giving drive c

              sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdc

If you get the same warnings and errors you might try to update the drive firmware
              before further testing.

An update is available for the given serial number, see
              https://www.seagate.com/de/de/support/kb/barracuda-720012-firmware-update-213891en/

There is a freedos ISO available to download so no more absolute need for a windoze
              rechner.

Maybe useful: Just also found that there is a bootable/portable version of seagate seatools which can be used with a USB stick.
              https://www.seagate.com/de/de/support/downloads/seatools/

Or contact the seller giving him the readout and ask for replacement, he will probably
ask if the firmware has been updated..

A placa-mãe ECS P4M800PRO-M V 1.0 não conseguiu inicializar no modo gráfico com a inicialização normal da ISO “remaster_antiX-21_sysvinit_x64_full_kernel_4.4.0-296_01-15-2022.iso”, só conseguiu inicializar no modo gráfico com a inicialização no modo de vídeo seguro. A mesma situação ocorreu com a ISO “remaster_antiX-21_sysvinit_386_full_kernel_4.4.0-296_01-16-2022.iso”.

A seguir, estão as informações após a instalação da ISO “remaster_antiX-21_sysvinit_x64_full_kernel_4.4.0-296_01-15-2022.iso” no disco rígido:

After my last question abut savestates, I thought I’d like to try proposing some changes in other areas within init script which I remember could work slightly better.

Since I’m no expert, it was not easy; took some weeks because even after finding the searched “areas”, everything is interconnected by functions, thus had to study a good fraction of entire script…

When finally finished, I thought I could start thinking about possible modifications; instead, I only got more doubts, which I describe next.

I’ll be using init script at Gitlab for easy checking, but I must mention this one is outdated. Current updated one can be found either by unpacking ISO’s initrd, or at /live/init when booting the live system.

                  Within find_files() function:
                  https://gitlab.com/antiX-Linux/Xlated-initrd/-/blob/master/init#L1871
When I booted with LiveUSB made with live-usb-maker, I saw it tries first /dev/sdb2 (the ESP), but of course it’s not it. So it should be unmounted afterwards. Issue is, it is not. When in toram mode, there’s no issue with sdb1 -it’s successfully unmounted-, but not the same with sdb2. I always had to unmount it manually before safely unplugging USB.
                  Why is this?

                  Within main_core() function:
Tried booting from ISO (still working with this tool
                  https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/booting-antix-with-multiboot-usb/ )
In the init log, I see this seemingly non-fatal error:
“Error: df: /live/boot-dev: can’t find mount point”
Tried tracing it, and found it must happen somewhere from this point
                  https://gitlab.com/antiX-Linux/Xlated-initrd/-/blob/master/init#L428
                  and next 8 lines
Problem is, I already tried analyzing all involved functions, and cannot understand how this freaking error is appearing. It even should not!

                  Within main_wrapper() function:
                  https://gitlab.com/antiX-Linux/Xlated-initrd/-/blob/master/init#L267
Option “toram_store” is just a particular one. What if not using any “toram” option at all? What does actually prevent unmounting? Because it does, I tested with a live DVD.

And finally, as kind of an apart additional doubt, what is toram-eject script actually for?
It’s called in the $HOME/.desktop-session/startup script, but seemingly does nothing!
I tried manually running it when booting from a live DVD. Running as normal user complains about “running as non-root user”; running as root complains about something like “LUKS device not ready”.
However in both cases script exits with status 0…

Thanks very much beforehand for your attention, and help if some is given.

The above solution does not fix anything. There is no change in the menus. The one option is the same before and after the change in /live/boot-dev/boot/grub/grub.cfg.

I don’t understand the statement “Customize boot (text menus) under grub should not appear on core/net isos.” as this worked in AntiX-Core-19; Antix-Core-17 and if memory serves it also worked in Antix-Core-15.

So booted up my antiX 19 chromebook. Dist-upgraded like on the ibm laptop. 4 upgrades with 3 libs and google-chrome.

Getting the same sudo behavior in it also. Auto mount was OK. So not a isolated incident.

Did my update today. Mainly google-chrome browser dist-upgrade with a couple of libs.
Inserted my sd card to grab some pictures.
Rox FM came up OK with auto mount.
Grabbed pictures and went to use uplugdrive.sh icon in toolbar. Nothing.

Try running as user via command line in rox terminal and it now says needs sudo to run.
Not sure why. Because auto mount and everything else in /usr/local/bin has the same permissions.
Even rebooted after logging out and in to a different window manager using the F1 key in slimski.
                        Still the same behavior.

Edit: I forgot to mention. I subbed out a usb stick to test after I rebooted. I know how to use umount. Just wondering why sudo is involved all of a sudden.

I’ve never used antiX much but I was aware of built-in persistence. It’s on of the features people always mention in reviews.

If you are using volumeicon you don’t need the jwmkit volume traybutton. Pick one.
Use JWM Kit Trays to remove JWM Kit’s volume button
or to prevent tray icon from loading on stat up change the line in $HOME/.desktop-session/startup
This load volumeicon for other window managers but not for JWM.

                          from this
                          volumeicon &
                          to this

                          if [ ! $DESKTOP_SESSION_WM = jwm ]; then
                            volumeicon &
                          fi

In my opinion volumeicon looks nicer in your setup and uses very little resources. I figure the icon itself is the majority of it’s memory usage.
EDIT to clarify : I mean the memory used by volumeicon is not much more (if any) than just displaying the icon.

Anyone who boots the ISO on a system that defaults to a low resolution will want to find ARandR quickly to change the resolution. And the less they have to stumble around in a 800×600 screen the better. I’d suggest adding ARandR to the right mouse menu and giving it a more generic label like “displays”. My idea for this menu was for “Favorites” This would also be a good place to quickly access the conky toogle, terminal, and filemanager.

antiX has it’s own way of setting the dekstop wallpaper and it conflicts with the wallpaper set in the jwm config. To prevent antix from setting the wallpaper on startup change the following lines in /usr/local/bin/desktop-session

                          from this
                          echo_bg_cmd desktop-session-wallpaper
                          to this

                                  if [ ! $DESKTOP_SESSION_WM = jwm ]; then
                                    echo_bg_cmd desktop-session-wallpaper
                            	fi

                            @marcelocripe –

I had a little time this evening to do a couple of tests of the 32-bit iso of your remaster. Here’s what I have for you.

                            Test on Gateway MX3210 laptop.

This laptop is my only machine with a VIA graphics controller. It is an VIA CN700 series [S3 UniChrome Pro]. The driver chosen for Xorg at boot is “openchrome”. There is no driver listed for the general driver.

                            Video is set at 1280×768
Sound is VIA V8237. It works.
Wifi and Ethernet are built in. Built in wifi is Broadcom BCM4318. Did not try it. Used a Belkin USB wifi dongle instead. Belkin loads as Belkin FSD7050 Ralink RT2571W and uses the rt73usb driver. Wifi works.

Connman did not find my wifi. Switched to Ceni. It took a long time but it did find the wifi and connected.

This machine has 489M of RAM available so I did not try FirefoxESR. The CPU supports SSE2 so the current version of SeaMonkey will run. But I could not get it to install on the LiveUSB. I installed Netsurf instead and browsed to the antiX forum. It works fine.

Played a music stream with PMRP. Works fine. Streamtuner2 will probably also work fine but I did not take the time to set it up.

Switched to the JWM desktop. Then back to IceWM. Works fine.

Used Repo manager to select a repo. Used antiX updater to update and upgrade. Works good.

Shutdown and move tests to Pentium-III desktop.

Here’s the system info for the Gateway laptop

                              Here’s a fix.

Customize boot (text menus) under grub should not appear on core/net isos.
If you never use that option, all should be fine.

If you are stuck like the first poster, try this.

                              1. Boot to ‘desktop’ using that one option.
                              2. Navigate to /live/boot-dev/boot/grub and open as root or sudo the file grub.cfg
                              3. Remove the Customize (text) entries
Something like this should be removed

                              menuentry " Customize Boot (text menus)" {
linux /antiX/vmlinuz quiet splasht disable=lxF menus
                              initrd /antiX/initrd.gz
                              }

                              4. Save changes and reboot.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Note: the workaround described herein is NOT a recommended
                                solution.
It is provided as a clarification of the nature of the problem in the hope of eliciting a proper, rigorous solution for antiX-19.5.

A method to get k3b working on antiX-19.4

                                1) Install antiX-19.4 full version.
                                2) Edit the /etc/apt/sources.d/buster-backports.list file, comment out the repo
                                reference.
                                3) Start up synaptic – DO NOT reload the package lists.
                                4) Search for elogind – the search should bring up 5 packages:
                                -elogind
                                -libpam-elogind
                                -libelogind0
                                -libpolkit-gobject-1-0
                                -libpolkit-gobject-elogind0
                                Lock all 5 packages
                                5) Search for iso-snapshot-antix, and synaptic itself, lock both packages.
                                6) Go to a terminal command line, sudo apt-mark hold the 7 packages just
                                mentioned.
                                7) Download the standard Debian Buster packages, libudisks2-0 and udisks2.
                                8) Reboot
                                9) Start up synaptic – it should show that the package lists have been updated.
If they are not, from a terminal command line, sudo apt-get update.
                                10) From a terminal command line, in the directory containing the downloaded
Buster packages: sudo apt install ./libudisks2-0*.deb and
sudo apt install ./udisks2*.deb. sudo apt-mark hold both packages as well.
                                11) From synaptic, lock the libudisks2-0 and udisks2 packages and install k3b.
(k3b installation involves about 124 packages.)
                                12) From a terminal command line, sudo apt-get upgrade.
(about 195 packages are upgraded; say yes to the 2 script changes, for fluxbox
                                init, and slim .conf file).

I made a “real” live-usb & ran the test on the sysvinit x64 core ISO. I got the same result. No options are present on the subsequent boots, not even the chance to use the text menus. (Also the option of which wm should be default is among the “first-run” menu choices, which isn’t applicable on the core edition.)

It definitely appears to be broken on the core ISOs, at the moment.
