Hi! I’ll start by apologizing, I really don’t know whether this should go in the software or hardware section. Feel free to move this.
On my neverending quest to get a modern web browser (and maybe even SFTP, which is arguably more important since it would be the best and safest option of getting files onto an old OS) working on Windows 98, I’ve looked into virtualizing Linux under the OS; some may consider this cheating and question why I don’t just put Anti-X on the real hardware, and to that I don’t have a good response, other then “because why not?” (and I’ll take anything to get a modern web browser working on this, as the newest you can get suffers from graphical glitches and slowdown. Even getting a slightly outdated browser working is better then what I, and other friends who like screwing around with Windows 98, have currently).
I got Anti-X running under QEMU previously, but it run horrifically slow as the oldest version that you can get working on Windows 98 (using KernelEx, a software for getting a select few Windows XP programs running under 98) was barely designed for Windows. So I’ve looked into VirtualPC 4.0, a program that natively works under win98, and I’ve tried to get AntiX 20 working under it. I’m actually able to boot the antiX ISO, and by putting acpi=off into the kernel parameters I can get it to start without an error about no ACPI. However, soon afterwards I get a kernel panic, and cannot continue. The kernel panic is preceeded by…
dmi: Firmware registration failed. 01:01 invalid checksum 0xa8 invalid opcode: 0000 [#1] SMP Modules linked in: . . .I can’t copy paste the log since it’s in a virtual machine, and the log isn’t stored anywhere since it’s a live iso, and I don’t want to type out the entire thing for fear of typos, so I’ll simply put a screenshot here for the whole thing. Sorry.

I’d like to get AntiX running because of the promise of this running under a Pentium 2 with 128MB ram; my hobbyist windows 98 pc has a Celeron D with 512MB ram, and while you can hack 98 to get up to 3GB ram, I don’t actually have that much and I don’t think my motherboard even supports it. But honestly, if there is any virtualization software that might work under Windows 98 and can run any relatively modern Linux at a good speed, I will take it.
That said, after trying all the alternate options in the boot menu, I’m out of options. What boot parameters can I try to get this running?
Best regards, IoI_xD

Before I start reinventing the wheel,
has anyone in the forum succesfully used this way of creating a bootable antiX stick.I will order a usb OTG adapter for my phone, intend to try and create a bootable thumbdrive with EtchDroid
downloaded from fDroid store.
The application is in Beta but if it works a very useful tool.A play store application, actually I have no play store, no goog either.
One on APK Pure bombards with ads and according to a forum info installs crapware in background.Topic: Hi from a 2008 netbook!
Hi, we’re violet spark, among other names we go by on the webs. We got an old lightweight netbook recently to use as a mobile communications device, with 2 gigs of ram and a 32-bit intel atom topping out at a screaming 1.33GHz. We were browsing the ol’ distrowatch trying to find a lightweight 32-bit distro with a similar batteries-included + packages available feel of the ubuntu-derived puppy linuxes, since fossapup is 64bit only now that ubuntu dropped 32-bit. Came across antiX and gosh are we glad we did, its basically exactly what we were hoping for and more!
We decided to go for a traditional install since it’s kinda ram limited. We’ve got a fun setup with grub4dos on a FAT32 partition that’s set to either boot our real system, or the live antiX iso that’s also living on the FAT32 partition for recovery purposes. Finding the 5.10 kernel in the repos was a pleasant surprise too, since thats new enough to give us wireguard as well as the lzo-rle algorithm for zram.
Anyways, happy to be here, thanks everyone involved for creating this. It’s a perfect match for this little computer friend, and we’re using it for some VMs now too.

This is just a quick starter for those who prefer to avoid dbus,dbus-x11 and elogind.
Tested in Virtualbox. English only.Stage 1: Installation
1. Download antiX-21 net (runit or sysVinit)
2. Boot the iso and at the prompt login as root (password=root) and type cli-installer
3. Follow the instructions.
4. Make sure you answer Yes to ‘Is this a net install?’
5. When asked if you want to install elogind dbus etc, choose No (default)
6. Continue until antiX-21-net has been installed – reboot to installed version.Stage 2: Getting a basic ‘desktop’.
1. login as user then either use sudo or su to root. I prefer the latter.
2. Update packages apt update && apt dist-upgrade
3. Install X apt install xorg
4. If you are going to use startx instead of a login manager, you need to apt install xserver-xorg-legacy
5. Install your window manager of choice eg apt install openbox
6. exit root (if you were using su) and as user type startx
7. You now have a very minimal openbox ‘desktop’Stage 3: Adding (gui) apps
This is the difficult part as far as avoiding dbus, dbus-x11 and elogind is concerned.
Suggestions below – feel free to add your own.
rxvt-unicode (terminal)
leafpad (text editor)
rox-filer or zzzFM
mpv (video/audio)
smtube (it works without dbus etc!)
ytfzf (youtube videos)
libreoffice-writer
libreoffice-impress
lxappearance (lazy way to customise looks)
mupdf (pdf reader)
links2 (browser)
dillo (browser)Note: All the big browsers will install dbus and dbus-x11
Stage 4: Beautify
Purely subjective, but I installed
adwaita-icon-theme-antix
arc-evopro2-theme-antix
dmz-cursor-theme
papirus-mini-antixLogin Managers:
If you want a login screen, you have these options
lxdm
xdm
wdmFor slimski or slim, you will need to install seatd first
apt install seatd
You might need to tinker some config files, but it’s good fun.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.
antiX-21 (Grup_Yorum) is based on Debian Bullseye and is fully systemd-free.
As usual we offer the following systemd-free flavours for both 32 and 64 bit architecture, running sysVinit or runit. The 32 bit versions use a non-pae kernel.
antiX-full (c1.4GB) – 4 windows managers – IceWM (default), fluxbox, jwm and herbstluftwm plus full libreoffice suite. x64 versions come with 2 kernels. Legacy 4.9 and Modern 5.10
antiX-base (<<800MB – fits on 800MB cd) – 4 windows managers – IceWM (default), fluxbox, jwm and herbstluftwm.
antiX-core (c440MB) – no X, cli-installer without encryption, but should support most wireless.
antiX-net (c180MB)- no X, cli-installer without encryption. Just enough to get you connected (wired) and ready to build. For experts.
Note 1: runit editions now set up in a similar way to Void/Artix.
Users should be prepared to familiarize themselves with how runit services workNote 2: After installation of antiX-21_x64-full editions, the default kernel will be the Modern 5.10 one even if Legacy 4.9 was booted during the live boot.
