How to use antiX on computers with a motherboard with SIS or VIA chipset.

“GNU Grub version 2.04 – Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions. grub> ”

        P.

If it is already available, share the gitlab link.

I’ll upload sourcecode + 64bit debfile for antiX 19.3 later today.
The deb will bear a versioned ~b1 suffix, but I’m not aware of any existing bugs. It is “beta” in the sense that its documentation is not yet complete, and (scope creep) the local testers are still suggesting further features.

When tested on a virtualbox instance of pristine* antiX 19.3 Full, you should expect it to be a bug-free drop-in replacement for SLiM not bug-free, but able to functionaly demonstrate its support of localized theme variants. At installation, when debconf asks which [SLiM, or slimski] should be “active”? …select slimski. Immediately after installation (and a peek at the slimski manpage, to see available options) you can run preview mode to inspect the (“default”, and “ax”) prepackaged themes. Full use becomes available once you shutdown/restart (or at least telinit to change away from, then back to, runlevel 5). Upon later removal (purge) of the slimski package, at next boot the system will automatically revert to using SLiM.

*pristine, because the as-shipped ~b1 slimski.conf specifies/recognizes only the following sessiontypes:
            rox-icewm,space-icewm,icewm,min-icewm,rox-fluxbox,space-fluxbox,fluxbox,min-fluxbox,rox-jwm,space-jwm,jwm,min-jwm

Upon using the “halt” special username, I wound up with
            persist-config: error
“This script can only run the commands shutdown and reboot”
            -=-
From wading the persist-config code recently, I recognize the error.
During livesession, using “halt” in any context would almost certainly yield this error ~~ not specific to SLiM nor slimski?
            idunno, needs further testing.
I rechecked the configured halt command in slimski.conf, and the commandstring seems identical to the line in slim.conf

            edit 2:
So, yeah “tested using a pristine 19.3Full ISO”…
persist-save had not yet been patched to remove its reported (by me) vulnerability.
^—> is a suid script, and it accepts an optional arg –command <commandstring here>
and was recently patched to only accept a fixed set {shutdown, reboot} of commandstrings.
So, upon dist-upgrading of the 19.3Full… during livesession we should now expect halt to
yield the same result regardless whether the command is issued via SLiM//slimski//cli

Exploring caprea’s link, you can find another article mentioning different keys (?). I don’t know which applies to your computer, but just in case I will also link it
              https://support.lenovo.com/uu/en/solutions/ht104668
F2 is for the BIOS (or Fn+F2), and F12 for the boot menu (or Fn+F12), based on that article

For partitioning, Reduce the Windows partition by 89GBs or more (it depends on what you are going to install on your linux system; I would recommend leaving 200 for Windows and the rest for any and all Linux experiments). For now I wouldn’t wipe out windows, and adjust the partition to something conservative for the future. Don create any other partition and leave the free un-allocated space as is.
Don’t delete the recovery partition (the one at the end). When you get to boot to antiX, use Gparted (Control Centre > Disks > Partition a Drive).
Use the Un-allocated space to create (minimum):
              1. (optional) A swap partition with the same amount of space as your total RAM.
              2. (required) A ext4 partition with the rest of the free space (or however big you want).
I recently described the process, in case you have some doubts (just do the create new partitions, and not the new table thing).
During installation you need to make sure you install grub to EFI, so that antiX can properly boot on your laptop.

You will probably wont be able to boot to a graphical interface using any of the available official antiX 19.3 ISOs, as they use an older kernel version.
If you don’t mind using an un-official ISO, I recently built one with 5.8.16 kernel version that was confirmed to boot on a computer with 10th gen intel CPU.

I didn’t see either of the issues that Xecure experienced

Just finished creating an ISO snapshot from a antix-bullseye-alpha1 on live USB (with persistence) with all updates installed without keeping the user configuration

Is your boot UEFI or Legacy_BIOS? If UEFI boot, what is the title of your current snapshot? That is the only issue I think is important reporting. My other issues are anecdotal.

APOLOGIES: I did not see Welcome to ISTRO(SCII_CODE_NAME! in the “boot menu’, but as soon as I started the boot process I DID see that pop up at the top of the screen as I was booting, so you are right about this Xecure and I now spot the same thing.

On mine I booted using UEFI mode (both Legacy and UEFI were available). I did save all of my files, configurations and updates. I did not see any unusual titles; the image was correctly identified and I had the usual boot options available too. I can try a Legacy BIOS boot later.

I have been using the alpha in persistence mode for a while now. I can check snapshot, I will check later in the week a frugal install, Wifi and bluetooth have been going well so far.
I will try booting with different languages and installing on a VM with different languages.

                    Snapshot

Just finished creating an ISO snapshot from a antix-bullseye-alpha1 on live USB (with persistence) with all updates installed without keeping the user configuration (resulted in a 1.1GB ISO file, so the same size).

Right now I am testing if the snapshot boots properly. But:
Is it normal that the Boot menu (UEFI boot) has:
                    Welcome to ISTRO(SCII_CODE_NAME!
as its title? I was hoping for at least “antiX snapshot (date)” as tittle. Is this normal? (snapshot tool was up to date, version 0.4.01, everything was up to date).

As reported before, Wifi doesn’t work out of the box on first boot of the snapshot (I was hoping things would be different with the new connman package you built). Even though cmst pops up, and enables wifi, WAP cannot be scanned. I need to close cmst and restart the connman service and relaunch cmst (or use antix-wifi-switch). This may be related to my hardware, so maybe it is not reproducible. After first boot, wifi works properly on the next consecutive boots.

BTW, (I don’t usually use the ISO Snapshot tools, I normally keep using a persistence USB and clone it, but not even that anymore). did the Cancel button ever turn to display “Exit” at the end of the snapshot generation process. The confirmation pop-up does appear, but maybe I am remembering wrong and I also saw the Cancel button change to Exit (to indicate that it has ended). Anyway, no error here.

I will keep testing the snapshot on live USB for a day or two and then return to the alpha and proceed with a frugal install on VM and real hardware.

                    Any crashes

No crashes so far. I will test booting on a few other devices (when I can get my hands on them), but so far it boots on the same devices as 19 did.

Snapshot and booting now from a USB containing the snapshot.
All of the information, including my files is included, as selected, in the snapshot, so this works.
Moreover, I had a pretty large ISO image (over 24 GB) to contain all of the apps, data, and other files, and it still worked fine.

Can you reach the antiX boot menu when booting from a DVD? You can try connecting both the DVD and the USB. The BIOS should let you boot from the CD/DVD drive. If it later cannot continue boot from the DVD (you should at least be able to reach the antiX boot menu), add (or select from the F4 options boot menu) the parameter from=usb to boot from the USB (it is a trick that has worked for many, the only condition is that both the USB and DVD must have the same antiX ISO or at least the same kernel).
Or, you can try booting from the SSD, reach the antiX boot menu, and use the same boot parameter from=usb,cd to try to force the boot from the those devices.

It seems that it wont boot, be it because of the xorg (the “graphical server”) version or something else (like some machine specific configuration) that was left behind by your other computer.

You can still use it as a terminal based server, but if you have time and want to experiment, you could try a DVD with the ISO I built aimed at older systems that have lost some of the graphical support (antiX19-legacy-beta2).
(Try different booting options if normal boot doesn’t work)

By the way, a total memory of 176 MB RAM is pushing the limits. You may be able to get a graphical environment working, but don’t expect much of the system. You can forget browsing the web with firefox, but editing text should work properly.

Yes you are understanding the procedure correctly. I did this because the old system currently has no OS on it and would not boot from a USB. It has a disk drive so I suppose I can try burning the ISO to a DVD and trying the install that way. Regarding computer specs, I ran inxi -Fxz and have attached the results in the images below. Thank you for the tip on “shift+ PG-UP/Down”!
I’m not going to speculate because again, Super-Noob, but I did notice in the graphics section driver: none and driver: NA.
Edit/Addition: I’m only hoping to use this computer as a txt file server. When I first got it 20 years ago it had a sticker “Never Obsolete” an absurd and ridiculous claim but I’m trying to follow through for it.

                                  Hi and welcome, LLAP28.
Yes, a GUI is possible in antiX 32bits version- assuming you choose to install an ISO that provides a GUI (like the Full version- please check if you downloaded the correct ISO).
There may be many problems that are causing this – you can try booting in “save video mode” (or some equivalent of that expression).
If you are really using an antiX ISO that provides GUI, your video card it’s probably too old to work with the default antiX ISO’s- please try to download the costume ISO that the user Xecure was kind enough to provide, in the thread: https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/how-to-use-antix-on-computers-with-a-motherboard-with-sis-or-via-chipset/
It may work in your old system!

                                  EDIT:
… But it’s weird that the 64 bits version worked out of the box, and the 32 bits version does not… Check if the 32bits ISO is not corrupted…

                                  P.
