The fact seems to be that the meaning of ‘antiX’ has not been disclosed

      Information about antiX

      Web site: h t t p s : / / antixlinux com

antiX is pronounced like the word antics, which means amusing, frivolous, or eccentric behavior. It is distributed as CD or ISO images that contain many quality Linux applications.

antiX is compiled to work with Pentium-class Intel and AMD processors or better. antiX will not work with 386 and 486 class processors. To install antiX on a hard drive, at least 1.5 GB of free space is required and a minimum of 2.5 GB is recommended.

Maybe something went wrong during the kernel image creation, have you tried running it again and watch for weird output?

Well, actually. When I got the kernel panic for the first time, I redownloaded the iso, checked the md5, wrote the iso to another dvd, and did a complete reinstall.

After this I tried updating the kernel again with the Synaptic Package Manager, and this was the output:

        debconf: (Can't locate Gtk3.pm in @INC (you may need to install the Gtk3 module) (@INC contains: /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/i386-linux-gnu/perl/5.28.1 /usr/local/share/perl/5.28.1 /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/perl5/5.28 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/perl/5.28 /usr/share/perl/5.28 /usr/local/lib/site_perl /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/perl-base) at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/FrontEnd/Gnome.pm line 151, <> line 2.)

I already mentioned what I thought was weird in my first post. Maybe I can get more output when I use the terminal to update the kernel?

I would look carefully at the boot loader configuration.
What is the entry from a working kernel and what is for the one failing. There may be a format discrepancy.
Are you using -ucode (amd/intel) and is it on the boot loader’s configuration?

I’m afraid I have too little experience with linux to understand what you are saying here.
Not sure if it is of some use, but this is the content of my grub config file:

I found I can install more than one instance of antiX as frugal installs and just add them to the grub boot manager.

Thank you for pointing this out. Indeed, multiple instances of Frugal install on the same partition is another great feature.

That is what I have on this laptop.

Personally I go even more extreme to use only LiveUSB. It has all the benefits olsztyn mentioned above, plus you can have your familiar environment go with you, if/when you happen to need to frequently switch between multiple computers. (Speed of LiveUSB would presumably be slower than frugal install, but still fast enough during a reboot, and not noticeable after booting-up, but this one is off-topic here anyway.)

Thanks rayluo. Great points. Just to mention I am also using mostly Live USB on multiple laptops exactly for the reasons you outlined above. The only reason I used Frugal in comparison to Installed was so disk speed would not be a deciding factor in such comparison, in fact Frugal should be (theoretically) faster.

Now that there is no answer for a few days, I wanted to ask if someone is already working on make-fstab or kernel or is willing to help me solve the problem? Why do I find this important?

There are countless tablets, laptops, TV-sticks and embedded devices with Intel Atom and win 8/10. Some of them have no USB and only 1 GB of Ram. With Windows updates they are nearly unusable.

              eg.: https://www.amazon.de/TrekStor-SurfTab-wintron-Tablet-PC-Graphics/dp/B0160WVCBC, https://www.devicespecifications.com/en/model-cpu/4a6e30e2, Rock Pi X, Lattepanda

most of them are able, to run linux, but still, its quite hard to boot and run them – like my lattepanda alpha with win10 from kickstarter is a real bitch running linux. I have tested a lot of Linux on the lattepanda and there is only antiX, that boots and runs well in Ram. Like even linuxium does not boot on it.

My interest is to make a iso, that is special for all of those devices. The kernel, I think, I will be able to do myself, but with make-fstab, I think, I need help.

So it would be nice to get an answer.

Hello everyone! I have installed antiX 19 in two laptops (one in VM the other on hard disk) and after the GRUB menu I get a few seconds with the usual cascading text and then at least 2 minutes with a black screen (just a static cursor at the top) and then the OS starts ok (I have selected autologin during installation) and works fine. Initially I thought something went wrong with the installation on the first laptop and so installed on the second one in real hardware, using the i386 iso in both and checked the integrity of the iso. This issue results in total boot time of 3 mins! Any thoughts? Thanx

I’m not sure there was an installation error, because everything went fine, no error messages, nothing. But the system behaves as if a few componenets were missing! This is why I suspect something went wrong during the installation.

I checked the md5 checksum of the downloaded iso against the given md5 value in the repository where I downloaded the iso from and they matched.

Is there a way to check an md5 checksum against the written CD too? (This old thinkpad can’t boot from a pendriive so I have to use the CD boot method.)

                  Thanks in advance,

I have an old emachine that was dual booted with windows XP and Ubuntu 12.04. It still runs, but no updates obviously. I’m looking for a linux operating system that will run on a windows XP built in 2003. I want to wipe the drive and install a new system. Is this still possible?

Specs: Processor 2Ghz AMD Mobile Athlon 64, 1152 mb Ram, 52.82 Gb Hard drive, x86

I see that are multiple versions of your system: https://mirror.genesisadaptive.com/mxlinux-iso/ANTIX/Final/antiX-19/
which one should I use for my machine?

I don’t know what just happened, but I removed the virtualbox vm completely and reinstalled. When I rebooted AntiX I now have full-screen without installing the
                      guest additions. How odd.

Edit: I was able to manually mount the .iso for the virtualbox guest additions and run the .run file with ./, after rebooting I still have fullscreen but no

I installed the 4.19.73 64 bit antiX kernel and it does have af_packet.ko (4.9 kernel doesn’t).
So, does that mean that iptables 1.8 plus ufw must need a 4.19 kernel?
                          Does it work properly?

Thanks for your valuable feedback on this.

It depends on what do you mean for “does have”.

                          Also 4.9.193 has af_packet.ko

                          yoghi@ranger:~
                          $ ls /lib/modules/4.9.193-antix.1-amd64-smp/kernel/net/packet/
                          af_packet_diag.ko af_packet.ko

Unfortunately Ufw developer arbitrarly stated that modules have to be compiled into kernel (builtin) as written in Ufw README (attached).

I tried also to load the module but Ufw doesn’t give a … if the module is loaded, it wants that it’s built in kernel.
It’s an Ufw fault, a lack of portability, on Ufw list to my question they justified this answering that this was the only way they found to make Ufw works with new nf_tables backend used by iptables >= 1.8 but this is a (can I use a Stallman’s word?) bullshit.

Iptables works without trouble also with dinamically loaded modules, they, IMHO, simply didn’t find a way to load needed modules at boot before Ufw thanks to systemd complexity (rotfl).

I tried this evening also with Slax which has the bare Debian kernel with af_packet built-in without installing Ufw simply booting the live and launching the check-requirements script included in Ufw source tarball as I did on Lubuntu,19.10, Debian 10.1 and antiX-19, it doesn’t give errors, as it does only on antiX, even if Slax lacks in dependency (python3:any requirements is not fulfilled so if you try to install only Ufw Debian package previously downloaded using dpkg it won’t install due to missing dependencies, installing it with apt and launching it you get no error, it works flawlessly).

Anyway also if it’s almost sure that it lacks only af_packet compiled statically into kernel (the three tabs comparison already posted is done using cat /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/modules.builtin sorting kernel/net modules (Debian 10.1 standard I used has no kernel/drivers/net as built-in so it wasn’t sure an antiX lack of kernel/drivers/net), this evening I sent an email to Florian Westphal, hoping that my german is still good enough, to have a confirmation that af_packet is the missing piece and asking him if is it possible to have a readme inside iptables source with a complete list of required kernel modules which, until now, is missing but IMHO needed.

If he answers I’ll let you know immediately.

P.S. my feedback and help is due, and I too have to thank you for antiX

and the utility “antixsnapshot” (package “antix-snapshot-cli“) mentioned @0:39
has not been updated for 5 years.

In 2018, responding to an inquiry similar to yours, I had uploaded an updated version a newer script which provided functionality similar to the earlier utility: https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/isofromlive-a-commandline-utility-creates-an-iso-of-a-running-live-system/
^— That script was intended for use on a liveboot system, not from an _installed_ system.

Unless you start from an antiX 19 or antiX 17 liveboot scenario, I would not expect the 2018 script (and certainly not the 2015 utility) to yield a successful result.

                              Hello,

I tried to install antiX 19 32bit and 64bit to an external USB HDD, and the install failed at the point of preparing the partitions. I tried both GUI and CLI installers with the same result. I installed antiX 19 64bit to the internal SATA HDD without any problem.

I installed the following distros to the same external USB HDD without any problems:

                              – Debian 10 64bit
                              – MX Linux 19 64bit
                              – Ubuntu 18.04.3 64bit
                              – Peppermint-10-20190514 64bit

While doing the GUI install, the failure message that I got was:

                              “Failed to format required partitions”

After dismissing this message, the whole install window was disabled, and I had to dismiss it with the upper right corner “X” button.

Here is the complete CLI install session:

I try both in my system …
with antix 32 start from 85 M RAM
with antix 64 start from 500 M RAM
                                  my system is 64
i prefer use antix 32 because is faster but is this better solution or must use antix 64 ?
                                  give me your opinion
