I hope you give it a try. It is really very easy. Do your backups with the snapshot program. Use live-usb-maker to make one or more of them into a live-usb. To be safe, copy the snapshot iso file off-site with something like Dropbox.
There are several impediments to copying the installed system directly to a live-usb. First, there are differences in the files. We have programs live-to-installed and installed-to-live to switch back and forth so this is not a show stopper. The next problem is that the file system on the live-usb (and on the iso) is compressed into a single file called linuxfs. There is no real way of getting around recompressing your entire file system. If you are running a live system we will recompress for you with the live-remaster program or snapshot. If you are running installed, the only program we offer that will recompress the file system is snapshot.
In theory, we could probably make some modifications to live-remaster so it runs on an installed system but there has been very little demand for this feature and I really don’t think it is worth the effort. Unlike in poems, with computer stuff you usually want to avoid the road less traveled.
Also, if you are interested, it is pretty easy to set up grub entries to boot directly from those iso files. I’m a big advocate for our live-usb but IMO snapshot to iso file is the best way to backup your installed system. For example, you can save many iso files in the same directory but you would have to make some manual changes to put multiple systems on a live-usb. A file is much easier to deal with than a physical usb stick. You can back it up to the cloud, share it electronically, copy it to another device, etc. Think of it as a live-usb in a single file.
If you are interested in easy live-usb backup then the best way is to keep running live either with a live-usb or a frugal install. Many people do this. IIRC anticapitalista runs a frugal system. You can then use live-remaster to back up directly to the live system. You can go back to the previous version with the “rollback” boot code. If you combine this with semi-automatic dynamic root persistence then you have a lot of flexibility.
In addition, whether you are running frugal or live-usb, you *can* backup to directly to another live-usb with live-usb-maker. When you are running live it will automatically offer to “clone” your live system. No iso file needed.

Is there any way to keep the LiveUSB synchronized after installation?
No. I don’t think there is. The closest thing we have is to use the snapshot tool to make an iso and then use live-usb-maker to make a live-usb from the iso. There would be ways to skip some steps but they would involve programming. The big step is creating the compressed linuxfs file and that can’t really be skipped.
I think snapshot, optionally followed by live-usb-maker is the way to go for you purposes. Depending on how much stuff you’ve installed, you can keep many snapshots on your computer and on a good quality $10 usb stick or other storage device. You could even use grub to boot directly from one of the iso files although you lose some of the live-usb features when you do that.

I’m really glad you like our cli programs! Good to hear.
BTW: If you make a live-cd with core or base, you could put a larger system, like full or something you made yourself (with snapshot or remaster) on a live-usb (with the same kernel), then select “F4 Options” –> “from=usb” when you boot the cd and we will finish the boot with what is on the live-usb. This also gives you access to persistence and live-remaster. Sounds like you are doing just fine with base, but I wanted to let you know this option is available. Often a live-usb can be faster than a cd so this might make booting and running live a better experience for you.
If you boot from a live-cd, you can use that to make a live-usb of the same system without needing the iso file. Just launch live-usb-maker and it will offer to clone your live-cd onto a usb stick. The next time you boot you can use the “from=usb” trick.

Yes, mtab and fstab are present on the harddrive (sda2)
sda2 is formatted ext4I use Midnight Commander as file manager. From file dates, it looks like when I ran fsck it updated the files on the USB stick, not sda2. I ran fsck /dev/sda2 with sda2 both mounted and unmounted with no difference.
Both files on the USB stick show sda2 /media/D620-Antix ext4,realtime 0 0
I made copies of the original files on sda2, then overwrote them with the files from the USB stick, then changed the lines in both files to show sda2 /D620-Antix
So far, the fsck error still appears during the boot dialogue, and things are still locked up at the login screen. I guess I’ll make a new ISO of my working system, in preparation for re-installation.

Hi ohh,
thanks, but just for clarification:
My problem is not booting the live CD.
That I already could do.Modifying the ISO with the tool mentioned on the site did not yield a different result (would not boot automatically of the USB, and after installation the Mac did enter Kernel Panic with the same symptoms as in the Screenshots).
But merci a lot for the effort.
Any other hints I could persue?–Thomas

I have a 2007 imac that I use for my main desktop, running antiX 17.3 the problem with the booting is best explained by:
https://mattgadient.com/2016/07/11/linux-dvd-images-and-how-to-for-32-bit-efi-macs-late-2006-models/
I have used the .isomacprog on several ditros that would not boot on my imac, but after conversion they all
booted fine.cheers,

OK I am not 100% certain what is happening. It looks like the system is looking for a boot disk but cannot find it.
Got it working. If I install non booting iso on another computer, where of course booting is not a problem, if I then create snapshot iso, I can then use this iso to boot that complicated chromebook with custom bios. So boot problem is solved.
There may be another work around, there is an option in custom bios, to ‘browse’ to proper boot or efi or whatever file, but with lack of current time I didn’t explore this option yet since I’m not even sure what file I would be looking for 😉 All in due time when I learn more…
Thanks for all the help everyone was giving me!

Based on what I’ve read, part of the issue being discussed appears (at least based on the explanations I’ve seen) to be based on which kernel and possibly which installation configuration works best for the system in question.
Thank you for all you wrote, quite a lot of interesting info, a lot of it I didn’t know.
About my case, it is not kernel, it must be something with custom BIOS that enables Linux on this chromebook. And lack of my knowledge. Interestingly, I got solution which is fairly simple. Original antiX iso (17, 17.1, 17.2, 17.2.1) will not boot. MX 17 will boot but new 18 will not.
But if I install these non booting versions on another computer, then create my own snapshot iso, then I can boot with them. I tried with two different computers I tried with newest antiX and newest MX and both boot fine. So boot problem is solved for me. I have another one but it may be my special case will do some inet searching first.
About your other comment about your two chromebooks you just update to native OS, I decided that I will prevent Microsoft or Google from spying as much as possible. I don’t own any windows machine and if I couldn’t make this chromebook working with Linux, I would simple not use it, I have that strong opinion. I guess, with the age there comes stubbornness 😉 So I’m very happy that Linux works on this machine. For now, sound is not working in MX and I’m ok with it. Besides some further upgrades bios or kernel may fix this. Better Linux without sound than working chromebook that enables google to spies on me left and right 😉
Did you see new doorbell’s from amazon. They are spaying on whole neighborhood with scanning & recognizing the faces of everyone within the area. Creepy! When will people start resisting this intrusions? Oh, going off topic now, so I better stop 😉

I’m sorry for late reply, life got in away I had hardly any time for computer.
I appreciate your help, I understand what you are trying to do, I have no problem with installations, command line or synaptic… I can do these basic things. What I’m too old for to do, is tweaking, configuration files, changing one configuration into something different. I tried once, I was frustrated for a few days and end result was complete disaster and re-install.
Installing antiX as it comes originally pre-set and tweak it a little bit per Dolphin Oracle video where he shows every step to use it as space/something I can do this. Installing MX and them mess with DM’s and configurations to get something different out of it – this is for younger and more computer savvy and more patient than I am 🙂
I actually did found work around, if I set antiX on one computer, create shapshot iso and use this snapshot iso, I can boot with it on Chromebook. But I can’t with original iso. Interesting. (although I have some other problem so i will stay with MX which is working surprisingly good on this weak machine, hat off)
New MX 18 iso will also not boot but I can again circumvent this by making my own snapshot on another computer. So problem is solved again since now I can get any personal version on this chromebook. Perfect!
I just wanted to let you know I really do appreciate your help, it is not that I was ignoring you, it was just not something I’m comfortable doing it, based on previous bad experience when i tried to replicate some DM settings. I was told it was easy, it was a night mare for me! Never again, life is too short, I’m going with already set up systems and life gets much easier ;-)))

I’m repeating myself but, never mind.
Just make a boot media with Rufus (https://rufus.ie/en_IE.html) so you can be sure it’s 100 % working on BIOS and on UEFI. Use it in .iso mode, not in dd. Use same USB pen key as your usb ports (USB 2 –> USB 2 / USB 3 –> USB 3) and reconsider using “known working” OS (MX-17.1) to start with.
You already said, your Linux knowledge is somewhat lacking and I still repeat myself — install any kind of MX that works for you for beginning and come back here to sort what’s easy to sort — installing IceWM on MX and regaining some space.
After you’ve got MX installed, it’s a small one liner in Terminal that’ll install you basic IceWM. Then you log out, choose IceWM and log back in.
Removing all unneeded stuff you can do yourself from MX software center by simply unchecking all memory hungry applications — you just uncheck gimp, libre office, firefox etc. and for the couple of things left, we’ll help you remove them either over the synaptic or over the cmd.
Same so for installing. It’s again a simple one liner in Terminal to install ceni, links2, moc, ranger, zathura … and, you’re up and running.
By the way, when you make a fresh install of antiX, you have exactly the same problem — you have to get rid of 1/3 of completely unnecessary stuff first. Well, unless you wanna keep 4 WM’s, 3 file managers, remastering and a bunch of live options ON AN INSTALLED system. 😉
Said the other way, we can much easier help you to remove Firefox, be it over the command line or over the synaptic or over the software center, then to help you to boot on some “extraterrestrial” modded HW which nobody of us knows.
You should have at lest 16 GB HD on your machine and that’s more then enough to install MX to start with. With our assistance, you would get rid of unwanted, even if you have zero Synaptic or Terminal knowledge.
Actually, if you’ve done that when I proposed it for the first time, you’d already long time have a working IceWMX with HD space and RAM usage halved.
