Did another update/upgrade. Not logged though. But it had ds-mouse-antix and the Mouse Configuration GUI have got a new layout/enhance […] it added a line in desktop-session startup ‘ds-mouse –all’ without single quotes and trailing & Q:why not & ?
      Results:
After reboots after reboots trying to nail the the following issue, it just kept unsolved: left hand mouse layout doesn’t apply over reboots and for my happiness my scripts on desktop-session startup file don’t execute anymore; maybe startup file isn’t being called at all? Tried to resolve on my side. […] I REALLY didn’t want to cross this line, but I am studying for college exams and thus my overall finance autonomy, in a way I can’t spent more time with this time killers. I also struggle with this new kernel parameters/ new build, to enhance my web usage (the program I am studying is online BTECH), which at the moment I simply can’t go on reading so many configuration pages. To summarize, I just need the basics, but the basics oddly seems to not, hmmm, “comply”/not even a tangible mercy — with my objectives. ( I will not put here, but final desktop took me a while to accomplish, lots of tweaks. Don’t get me wrong, I asked for this; while most other distros wouldn’t suit this low budget Atom netbook and spare me the steep? learning curve of building from mini, netinst, core ISOs. “One finishable thing at a reasonable time”)
This is good […] is reliefing in a manner. I hope you understand and care.

      My best compliments.

The btrfs filesystem’s compression feature is quite handy to shoehorn things onto the small drives in early netbooks and other older systems.

There are three compression modes available in btrfs. Lzo is fast but the compression is not great. Zlib compresses very well but it is comparatively slow. Zstd is available from kernel 4.14 onwards and compresses about as well as zlib, and about as fast as lzo. (Zstd has one big disadvantage in that grub will not boot from a drive that is using zstd on the files contained in /boot/).

I run btrfs with zstd compression on my Asus eee pcs with their tiny and sluggish 4 GB SSDs. On a system with such small and slow storage, it helps spending less time reading and writing from the drive, albeit with a slight increase in cpu usage during access. It will however be slower to do the initial install as it tries to compress every file.

This modified version of the cli-installer from 17.1 has a couple of extra options for btrfs available in the file system selection menu.

There are only two very minor changes involved, both optional and in addition to a standard btrfs install.

The mount options include compress-force=zlib during the installation and in the fstab it creates, enabling and selecting the compression type.
          # mount -o defaults,relatime,compress-force=zlib

Optionally, during the filesystem creation, options are better tuned to small hard drives (<~16GB). This allows any sector to be used by data or metadata, (preventing erroneous drive-full errors which can occur on small drives otherwise).
          # mkfs.btrfs -f -M -O skinny-metadata /dev/sdX

Here are the results comparing installation of antiX-full to a 4GB drive. This is using the modified cli-installer, otherwise installed as standard from antiX-17.1-386-full.iso.

          Ext 4
Filesystem	1K-blocks	Used	Available	Use%	Mounted on
          /dev/sda1	4061888 2991020	844820 78%	/mnt

          Btrfs
Filesystem	1K-blocks	Used	Available	Use%	Mounted on
          /dev/sda1	4061888 2972980	1037839 75%	/mnt

          Btrfs with zlib compression
Filesystem	1K-blocks	Used	Available	Use%	Mounted on
          /dev/sda1	4193280 1452200	2557720 37%	/mnt

Btrfs with zlib compression & small drive options
Filesystem	1K-blocks	Used	Available	Use%	Mounted on
          /dev/sda1	4193280 1345712	2858836 33%	/mnt

I also decided to see if it was possible to get a complete install of antiX 17.1-full with all subsequent updates installed onto a 1.5 GB drive, in a usable state.

After the initial installation, packages were updated individually using apt list –upgradable, then apt install for each one. (Some of them will pull others along with them). This was necessary as with the number and size of the updates available, apt upgrade as one operation would have filled the drive. Then the kernel was upgraded to 4.15.14 from the antiX repo. Finally, I installed bleachbit to remove the localizations that i did not require.

In the end, it got there with a touch of room to spare, at around 1.2 GB used for the install and around 300 MB available:

Filesystem	1K-blocks	Used	Available	Use%	Mounted on
          /dev/sda1	1534976 1210212	337056 79%	/

Although the 1.5GB drive was just as an exercise, this sort of install is useful on early netbooks with their minimal storage, and other older hardware with small slow drives. Once grub is updated to support zstd, it will bring easy performance benefits as well as size savings.

I am giving up now, but here is the fstab files for the record.
            This is the ORIGINAL /etc/fstab

            # Pluggable devices are handled by uDev, they are not in fstab
            /dev/sda1 / dos defaults,relatime 0 1
            UUID=52073545-da33-4669-b12a-39d5ebf63899  swap                         swap       defaults                 0 0
            /dev/sda3 /home ext4 defaults,relatime 0 2
            # Dynamic entries below

            UUID=4b5ec284-3f0b-4e47-bbde-bd6f1b02c53b  /media/sda4                  ext4       noauto,exec,users        0 0
            /dev/cdrom /live/boot-dev iso9660 noauto,exec,users,ro 0 0
            /dev/sr0 /live/boot-dev auto noauto,exec,users,ro 0 0

And this is the ALTERED /etc/fstab (which gets the home directory recognised)
Note: I commented out the original line for sda3

            # Pluggable devices are handled by uDev, they are not in fstab

That is because you tried to login as root/sudo. Delete that file, reboot and try again!

              No difference!

BTW net and core is meant for experts!

I went with the net.iso because it gives a minimal setup; I did not want loads of software.

              Thanks for your help.

                Hello nbah,

To compile your own kernel: https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/kernels-make-your-own/

To change your kernel to use BFQ scheduler as default: https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/how-to-use-the-bfq-io-scheduler/

For items to disable or remove: debugging, quotas, timer frequencies, extra loops, extra ramdisks, and about 200 more. I may try to make a list of items I have changed in my personal build for others to try when time permits.

My 0bjectives are to isolate and optimize the linux kernel for my system. (dell studio 1737). So far, I have taken 5-6 seconds off of my boot time. Applications open way faster. Using BFQ Scheduler instead of the default seems to allow for quicker and more stable operations while performing background operations like video editing.

To get the source package to build your own kernel: http://repo.antixlinux.com/stretch/pool/main/l/ This is for antiX specifically. Latest antiX kernel is 4.15.14 This is a good place to start.

And for latest linux kernel build: https://www.kernel.org/ You will find much information here. Latest stable is 4.16.3 Latest unstable is 4.17rc-1 – This is working on my laptop and provides significant improvements in speed. 200,000 lines of obsolete code removed in 4.17rc-1

All latest kernels are patched for Spectre exploits.

lspci -k in terminal will show all kernel modules.
dmesg in terminal provides boot information for system parameters.

This should get you started if I understand you correctly.

Both file systems are enabled by default, and should not matter as far as kernel usage is concerned. I use EXT4 for now.

It is because you are running a systemd free distro and we do not allow systemd to pulled into a install through synaptic package manager.
                  Because systemd breaks stuff.

                  If you wanna run cinnamon.

You would probably save you some grief and just install

                  https://www.debian.org/CD/live/

They have Cinnamon Isos on stock and use systemd till the cows come home.
You could even dual boot and compare speed and ease of use if you have the hard drive size to handle this.

                    Hi –

                    Thanks for your help.

Yes – default – Debian Stable
No – 32 bit apps that I know of installed – only Chrome, xscreensaver, GIMP, Redshift (w/Geoclue2), Pinta and Florence.

All the above added apps are from Synaptic Pkg Mngr or Package Installer only.

I have been comparing behavior and files on several different PCs [w/ same AntiX/MX setup, apps, config] to try to gather more information regarding the broken packages.

On the T61p, I found that IceWM is left alone with no other desktops installed, it runs fine. I again, installed IceWM on another partition – fresh, fully configured, up to date – new kernel 4.15.9 and did a backup image, added Xfce after, and when Xfce would not run properly, installed the backup file and it was just a list of i386 failed directories errors going by. The computer would no longer boot. Grub was installed on my MX17 partition. Tried to repair Grub from a USB snap and it had a failed notification dialogue. But after a few reboots, got Grub back. The partition was totally corrupted that AntiX was on. Maybe Timeshift no longer works after installing another desktop?

The findings on all other devices were that once Xfce is installed, when switched back to IceWM, many applications no longer function properly such as USB devices and wallpaper [black screen]. Perhaps Thunar’s mere presence interferes even though it is in Xfce.

Yesterday, on any of the PCs tested, (completely updated, upgraded, and with 4.15.9 kernel) Mate desktop would not install, through the package Installer or Synaptic.

The broken packages, except for the Mate installation failures and IceWM “switch desktop” issues, appear to be isolated to one device – the Thinkpad T61p.

                          Thanks for the warm welcome.
@frugalnet – Yes, you are right that the slow up in the system is in the read/write. However, I’ve been using AntiX on that old laptop with USB 2.0 using persistence static, and I’m impressed with the speed of the apps openings and files being read/written. I feel it is just as fast as Ubuntu MATE on the older SATA hard drive. I’m sure a SATA SSD in the laptop would be my fastest experience possible with that old hardware, but AntiX live on USB 2.0 is really impressing me.

@koolstofje – Are you requesting an ISO image of my current AntiX Live? It wouldn’t be worth the effort since I really have only added GnuCash and g++. You could do that with an AntiX Live using persistance and the command “sudo apt-get install gnucash g++” and you would be running the same AntiX that I’ve been using for the past week.

@fatmac – Are you trying Lubuntu Next? That will eventually become the new Lubuntu, and since it is built on qt instead of gtk, I wouldn’t be surprised if it runs even faster on your hardware. I was running KDE Neon on the old laptop before installing Ubuntu MATE and just from a fresh boot, I’m pretty sure that full KDE used a few less megs of RAM than MATE which also runs surprisingly well on the old laptop that I’ve been using with AntiX live on a USB stick since coming home from vacation.

                            Hope the following makes sense.

Default live boot option is to include what we call a state folder and store folder (actually 2 store folders, one for root and one for demo).
State saves such things as locale, keyboard, wifi set up etc
Store saves nothing until you put something in there eg a video file.
Store and state do not need persistence and do not use up RAM space like persistence does.
F4 in live menu can disable both store and state.

If you are not going to install any apps or upgrade and you just want to run the iso as it is on a live usb device, there is no need to have persistence rootfs.
If you also do not want to save any changes made to your /home/demo directory eg firefox bookmarks, there is no need for homefs persistence.

If you only want to save changes that are typically made to /home eg different wallpaper, bookmarks, font settings etc, then only use homefs since all changes will be saved for next boot (as long as you choose the correct homefs persistence option in the menu).

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Hi. I installed antiX-17.1-net (32-bit) on the hard disk of the desktop. I upgraded the kernel to 4.9.91, rebooted into the newer kernel and purged the older one, updated and dist-upgraded. I installed xserver-xorg, xserver-xorg-legacy, xinit, icewm, rxvt-unicode, palemoon-nonsse2 and iso-snapshot-antix. I want to create an iso of the system, but:

                              $ sudo iso-snapshot
                              sudo: iso-snapshot: command not found

(EDIT: wrong command, see the next post)

                              Any idea, please?

Is this not already part of the f4 menu on the boot screen? Maybe it is another f option but I am sure it is there and uses the files off the CD / usb for comparison

i have a lenovo notebook with cpu i3-5010u with intel graphics hd5500
posted about this before, antix17 hangs at blackscreen, and it seems to be the video driver
like instructed before , i used boot parameter “3” to avoid loading x and cli-installer to install

then i changed the kernel to latest, 4.15 iirc, thinking will also update the video driver, but the problem persists

then i added testing repos and updated the xserver-xorg-video-intel
                                  i had 2.99.917+git20161206-1
                                  updated to 2.99.917+git20171229-1

                                  still same problem
does anyone have an idea how to tackle this problem?

offtopic: i wanted to post a thread yesterday in tips’n’tricks, it showed me as latest poster in main forum, but i cant see the thread, it was about multiboot usb grub iso loop, didnt think the problem deserved its own thread
