At the bottom of Roky’s post he has a link of how to search…

Anyway, if you follow his destructions and search for
      conky weather wttr
You will find his post with his weather stuff for the conky on the first page…
      ${texeci 1800 curl 'wttr.in/Pecos?q?0?T'}

Have fun, and nice to meet you

PS: I think he lives in/near Pecos

rokytnji, question: what line do you use to generate the weather report in Conky? Right now I’m trying something

        ${texeci 1800 curl -s ‘wttr.in format=%l:+%C+%t’ | sed -n ‘3,7{s/\d27\[[0-9;]*m//g;s/^..//;s/ *$//;p}’}

per a recommendation by wttr’s author in a Github issue thread. However, I notice yours looks a bit nicer; I can’t quite get things like
city name and current condition, and with the proper centering and such. I’ve also tried

        ${color}${font Dejavu Sans Mono:size=8:style=Bold}${alignc}${execi 1800 curl ‘wttr.in/?format=%t+%c’ > weather}
        ${exec cat weather}${font}

which is actually not all that bad, but stuff still doesn’t display quite like I’d want.

I made a conky years ago that I ran all the time named Tower-conky was in love the thing. Below TEXT was 48 lines of code including weather fonts and could be about 55 lines if added semplice-conky-harddisks.sh I never had a problem at all running it on my system back in the day. Conky Version 1.10> converted from <1.09.
But I suppose it also depends on how powerful the computer is as well and hardware.

          Here is a screenshot. link

Lappy pulled from recycle bin (just needs battery…)
Icewm with some tweaks to menu, theme, conky to my liking.
use transset to add transparency to taskbar
Added quickpick menu to taskbar (similar to personnel menu)
added light weather app to taskbar (curl wttr.in)

HI guys, I’ve listed my specs to get help completing my install and getting this system functioning. I have listed the issues I’m having with hardware and software since my install. I’ve numbered my priorities:
              1. Cd, dvd, not mounting or finding file. (I would like to include a screen shot of the error message, but I don’t know how on here)
              2. Problems streaming music: StreamTuner2, or Poormanradio. (I also downloaded some apps thru package installer and manager and cannot find them) eg. SuperTuxCart not listed in my apps menu.
              3. Not able to read cd pictures nor music. (See 1)
              4. MPS youtube not working. (API issue; I checked some of this out and seems a little complicated with google and registering.) SMTube works; however to play videos or music I have to right click “read with: mpv + youtube-dl” I would like this to work by just clicking on the link.
              5. Once I get most of these working how can I make them desktop short cuts? Easy for someone not used to computers : watch and manage pictures & listen to music.
              6. Is there an automatic update manager?
              7. What weather conky can I use on desktop?
              8. Those are my main issues. The next 2 I might as well give my impressions so far.
              9. Very speedy. As you can see by my specs this is a dinosaur desktop from the beginning of the new millenia. In comparing the WINXp OS to Antix OS on this machine I am amazed at how functional it has now become. Sorry for the rant, but I realize that some people and me prior to linux would stop using a computer or go and buy a new one because of the Windows bog down since it is just so long to boot and open windows and the apps and updates ahhh. So if I get all my issues resolved and I am sure I will: 3 thumbs up for Antix for old computers (which is the search term I used to find out about Antix).
              10. Happy so far, works pretty well and lite for 512mb ram system. Still learning and playing around updating and configuring, Will use again on another machine.
              Thank you.

              As anticapitalista has stated, first
              sudo apt dist-upgrade

              2. Problems streaming music: StreamTuner2, or Poormanradio. (I also downloaded some apps thru package installer and manager and cannot find them) eg. SuperTuxCart not listed in my apps menu.
After dist-upgrading, see if you can install SuperTuxKart again from antiX package manager.
              locate supertuxkart

              5. Once I get most of these working how can I make them desktop short cuts? Easy for someone not used to computers : watch and manage pictures & listen to music.
You can create .desktop files (there are different post in the forum), save them in ~/Desktop and (if using ROX desktop), drag them to the desktop from the folder.

              6. Is there an automatic update manager?
Yes, Apt Notifier. You can install it (if not installed) from the antiX package Installer and uncomment the option in the ~/.desktop-session/startup file

              7. What weather conky can I use on desktop?
              https://www.antixforum.com/forums/search/conky+weather/
There are many solutions. You can choose the one you like the most.
              One I liked was:

antiX19 and new weather conky with 9 days and 12 hours preview of TBG “WUnderground conky script”

              antiX Live system enthusiast.
General Live Boot Parameters for antiX.

I had a nice post before but upon loading several screen captures in my previous post (how many can I post?) got booted as spam! I’ll be curt.

                1. Cd-dvd not reading, mounting.Reading music nor pictures. (I already checked quite a bit on these forums for this issue and nothing clear nor specific about my problem.) Solved! (I did actually find something on the forums:

$ sudo mkdir /media/sr0, I tried it, and it worked. So I did the same for the 2nd dvd/burner drive. )

                2. Cannot play streaming music: StreamTuner2,MPS, Poorman etc.
                3. I downloaded packets thru installer and manager in control center eg. SuperTuxKart and cannot find them or make them run. Does not appear in menu. (how can I see a list of my installed packages or manage them?) Is there an auto update manager I can run or how?
                4. How to find a Weather conky or display on desktop.
                5. Making desktop icons for favorite apps.(solved, I found this out alone, sorry)
That is it for now. Thanks comrades!

Since your hardware and memory consumption usage is actually irrelevant to this discussion, let me provide you consistent data from my development platform.

From htop you will see all the ‘bloat’ I have added as part of the 340M running on the iceWM development desktop I am using. (see htop screenshot below: icewm-homogenized-htop.png)

By way of comparison, let’s analyze what we have using a consistent data base. I will use my development platform and start from the bottom build to show where the system’s memory use grows. Keep in mind everything I will add is optional (because I have not removed any of the base antiX system).

First let’s look at a naked base space-icewm from which my blended system is built (iceWM with SpaceFM).
                            — space-icewm with only the icewm panel running (no add-ons beyond SpaceFM) idles at 230MB on my VB machine

                            Next:
                            — when I add conky memory consumption increases to: 240MB

Then if I add either of the following compositors to the mix on the base space-icewm platform I get:
                            — 313MB of memory consumed when compton is added (screenshot included below: with compton.png)
                            — 300MB of memory consumed if xcompmgr is used instead of compton

Thus the remaining ~27MB of memory spent on my “current” base platform provides the following services:
                            — a semantic launcher/ search tool (kupfer)
                            — tint2 to run and manage the task bar,
                            — jgmenu (an xfce whisker-like menu with internal searching)
                            — a weather app
                            — a calendar popup

First let me make clear that my objective is NOT to build the leanest machine in the world. It is rather to build a Desktop that is functional for a typical laptop user, nice to look at (following reasonably common user interface techniques/ approaches), consumes computer resources frugally, is easily tailored, and provides a good balance of features to cost. My targeted hardware platform is a typical 5-10 year old laptop. To that end, I assume about 2GB of memory, 100GB of disk, and 1366×768 screen. Thus to my mind the use of let’s say 400/2048 (~20%) of memory seems reasonable and appropriate (and note, my actual current use is close to 340MB of memory, not 400MB).

If you think that my use of about 30MB of memory is wasteful, then by all means follow your heart and don’t use what I build. There is absolutely no requirement that you (or anyone) use my work. If you can provide a better result offering the same or equivalent features, I encourage you to do so. Everyone will benefit.

For those who are interested here’s where I am currently.

Items now included on the antiX setup by default:

                              From within tint2:
                              — meteo-qt: weather app (I’m not very excited about this app; other recommendations are welcomed)
                              — orage calendar (click the date)
                              — kupfer (semantic launcher search/ function. It is activated by the <Insert> key.

                              From within autostart script:
                              — tint2 is started
                              — feh (wallpaper) is started– it is set to randomly change backgrounds
                              — jgmenu (it is modified to closely resemble Whiskermenu available on xfce)
                              — numerous icon application launchers
                              — date & time (clicking on the text activates ‘orage’
                              — Volume master (sadly the icon is black)
                              — tint2 is started & positions itself, currently, at the screen bottom
                              — compton is started (default settings are established/ set from within compton-conf.)

                              Current Bugs:
                              — fluxbox, the non-icon friendly wm (does not display icons for kupfer or meteo-qt) on the toolbar. I think it’s probably a jpg/ png/ svg thing.
                              — the meteo-qt iconset is itty bitty!

Desktop icons… I’m still trying to figure out what to do with them. I plan to hack around with the antique iDesk code to see what is able to do. I really am not happy with what spaceFM, PCmanFM do to (with?) wallpapers. Ideas here are welcome.

                              Performance—
                              — Description of the VBox platform I’m using for this effort may be found at the end of this message.
The base desktop (as described above, according to htop, seems to idle on:
                              — iceWM at about 360 MB . Conky reads out at under 600M (Somebody -me?- needs to fix conky, I guess).
                              — fluxbox at about 330 MB (probably because they don’t waste any memory on displaying icons correctly.)
                              — jwm at about 322MB
                              — openbox idles at just under 350MB

I am considering creating an optional taskbar that mimics MX’s standard left-side layout. The tint files I develop will be equally usable on antiX and MX. My fees for either are identical. 😉

If you have materials you’d like me to consider adding to this mix of ‘tiny tools’. Please make them available via download (from somewhere easily accessed). Any information you can provide will be helpful. I promise I’ll check them out. I won’t promise to add them to what I’m buiding, but you will be able to add them to your setup soon!

Which is kind of nice to know if you want different conkies for different desktops.
Now, if you want them run on autostart and want them directed to specific desktops I wouldn’t know how to do it, manually it seems to just draw on the desktop you are at (without sticky).

                                  736,

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. It was nice of you to spend time looking at something I can tell you wouldn’t want for yourself. Myself, I need feedback, or what’s wrong with what I create will be even uglier with the next code I write, LOL.

I’ll look into your path comment. I don’t know enough to be honest, and I know it, and that’s why I was asking for opinions. I think a standard place should be there on the path so I don’t need to wonder where things should go, or try to create a place and need to tell someone how to create it and add it to their path, just to get my program to work.

Bash vs Sh. I do know they are different, but couldn’t give you an example of what is ok for one vs the other to save my soul. I was only able to write what I wrote by searching websites and then trying to adapt the syntax I found, and my success rate with that was under 50%. Things like braces or not, testing values, or the inverse didn’t work from one supposedly good answer to the next, and I was actually searching with bash as part of my search string. Luckily at work there is a system that’s much worse, so I’m kinda used to that. I used to use csh and ksh on some system or another back in the 80’s, and the one thing I do remember was that there were not the same.

I will say I dislike having everything owned by root, but don’t know how to make things user owned and correctly package it up for easy/safe install.

I will try looking at curl again. I didn’t like the run forever nature of rsstail, but wasn’t able to find anything else that worked better than sleekmason’s rsstail suggestion after spending an hour or two trying with newsbeuter, which worked fine for what it is, and not wanting to install anything big to do it, because rss feeds are something I normally only use for 10 lines of recent top story titles on my conky, and that’s about it, which didn’t require anything fancy. I think I figured out a way to get the pid of the rsstail for that url and cancel it after getting the data, and using my timer to not get it again for X minutes like I was doing with curl. I looked again last night for ways to do it with curl, and what I found was like what I had, ie using grep and sed to try to figure out what came on the page that I wanted to display, but again, I was looking for something more black-box, where I give it the URL and it hands me back the text of the title and maybe description, not a book filled with xml gobbelty gook. Maybe I should let rsstail do the work, since it is small and seems capable, and capture its pid and kill it after it grabs the text. I’m not expecting it to filter out the articles I’m not interested in, although it would be nice, but I was just looking for something simple and small.

I wanted the text (in general) on the screensaver to get it in front of me when my PC screen wasn’t doing anything else useful anyway. I remember better the things I see often. Having a bit of news and weather mixed in and the fancy text crawl display method seemed like a good way to keep it from being all work.

It wouldn’t need to be part of xscreensaver, and could just as well have been something separate, but I wouldn’t have a clue trying to replace xscreensaver. I too would have liked to have been able hit a key and have an RSS link come up in a browser, but it was way beyond the idea of getting things to remember in front of me.

I missed things there I’m sure, but I will go back and reread your comments again till I figure it out.

I saw sleekmason’s first comment and will remind him that 736 gave us what we needed. He wasn’t here looking because it wasn’t something he was really interested in, so its almost by luck that he came back and saw we needed help, and took his time to try to help.

Sleek, the thing was I didn’t want my little program making major changes to someone’s system, when I can barely make things work on mine… Your idea for what you or I could do to ours is fine, assuming we don’t want anything like vanilla systems, but for example, if it was already in the other person’s system’s path, or some other location was there for the same purpose, or maybe a different login method was used (like slim vs lightdm), would it for sure be the same?

I don’t know how to see how many people even looked here, but I think there are about 4 maybe that commented total. I still think its a far more useful screensaver since I changed mine, and I almost never go look at the conky anymore because I don’t need to.
