The video installs with a slightly different command. But I’ll mark it all out step-by-step, just in case a small step turns out to be bigger than it seems. 😉
Basically, dolphin_oracle goes through this process to get the kde desktop in virtualbox on antiX core 19.1:

      1. He’s making a live-usb in virtualbox. So the p_static_root is needed, to keep your changes. He’s using a 12 GB persistence file.

      2. He removed the “disable=” line in the bootcodes. If there is a “3” at the end of the bootcodes, remove that, too.

      3. Run sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade

      4. sudo apt install --install-recommends kde-standard virtualbox-guest-dkms virtualbox-guest-x11 virtualbox-guest-utils

NOTE: he uses “kde-standard”, as opposed to “kde-plasma-desktop.”

      5. He reboots, having to reset the bootcodes, because it is in virtualbox. (If you do this on a real live-usb, you can save the boodcode options, but on virtualbox, you cannot.)

As I’m sure you remember on the video, his kde desktop does load automatically…

I did this project once, and it did work out well. (A long time ago.) I did mine on a real live-usb, so I didn’t mess with the virtualbox issue. (Therefore, persistence was easy, etc.)

That was video #1 in the series. The others detail misc tweaks to the DE.

So see if any of those steps makes the difference…

The following is the video tutorial installing kde onto antiX core live-usb. He covers it all, so I’m sure he has the info you need:

          Hi,

I’m familiar with linux but no expert.

I’m testing antix in virtualbox. I want to create a minimal build. I installed antix core, did apt-get update and upgrade, then installed KDE with :

          apt install –install-recommends kde-plasma-desktop

Rebooted and was presented with cli login screen.

I cant find how to start KDE.

I’d like it to start automatically at boot. Would be grateful for some help.

          Thanks

The problem being investigated is now [Solved].

As my original text was rejected as spam, I’ve attached the file,

To the several voices who provided input on this subject:

I’ve finally stumbled onto the solution to the problem.

On a fresh copy of antiX-17.5_386-base, rather than use Package Installer to
actually add a LXDE or XFCE environment, I used synaptic to initiate, but not
follow through, on an lxde install, and an xfce4 install respectively.
In examining the packages that would be installed in either case, the only
common packages were libwnck22, libwnck-common, and libxres1. LXDE
would add libkeybinder0, whereas XFCE would add libkeybinder-3.0-0. I
installed all 5 packages. Okular still would not start from the menu, but when
invoked from the command line while in /usr/bin, ./okular, it’s file handling
was improved, but there were still several error messages appearing on the
            terminal.

The error messages seemed to be concerned with dbus access, and varied
somewhat between tests, but the phrase “secure D-bus connection created
before Q Core Application : Application may misbehave” was usually
            there.

On my copy of debian-9.13.0-LXDE (stretch), I checked the dbus-related
packages installed, and checked if they were also present on antix-17.5.
Package fcitx-module-dbus was missing, so I installed it, but the messages
            persisted.

There were web artictles suggesting that because the okular error messages were
merely warnings which impeded normal functions, it made sense to simply
modify the okular exec command in the okular.desktop file to read:

            Exec=okular %U %i -caption %c &>/dev/null

with the addition on the end to direct all terminal output to the null device.

With this change in place, okular started from the menu selection and worked o.k.
            ***************************************************************************
I want to thank you all for the comments you provided on this subject. They were very
helpful for deciding what to do, or what not to do, as I careened through the process.

            ***********************************************************************
One might readily construe that the interest displayed herein for okular, to the exclusion of
viable alternatives such as mupdf or qpdfview, is obsessive. My fixation is really with the
k3b package, which I’ve found to be the very best CD/DVD burner package, especially with
            its read-verification feature.

In a non-KDE environment, any addition of a single KDE-based application invariably
causes the installation of around 100 dependencies, given the extent of the KDE libraries.
But if one is prepared to “bite the bullet” with k3b, a subsequent install of okular only
adds 7 packages. Similarly, I often use ktorrent rather than deluge or transmission as
            the bit-torrent client.

            Thank you all again !!

              ahoppin:

              Good points.

I’ve built systems from antiX Core that resemble other distributions.

Many years ago I built antiX Core Xfce. A few years later MX Linux appeared with a MEPIS follow up and they switched from MEPIS KDE to MX Linux Xfce.

Ironically that’s what the distribution community did when one distro ended and the next one started.

From this list, the suspicious ones should be:

                xserver-xorg-core
                libblockdev-fs2
                libdbus-1-3
                libsmbclient
                dbus-x11
                xserver-common
                libuuid1
                libblockdev2
                libblockdev-part-err2
                libblockdev-utils2
                libpolkit-gobject-1-0
                libprocps8
                procps
                rfkill
                dbus

I don’t think the ones related to filesystems and mounting should be touching input devices.
rfkill should only be related if the devices are wireless, but this shouldn’t be blocking automatically wireless connection.
dbus and xorg are the most suspicious, but I cannot see any package related to input either, only common and core packages.

If it was some libinput or libevdev, then we could point out that these are to blame, but I cannot see them there.

Does anyone know if policykit can manage or control permissions to input devices?

                  – Which major apps are known to install the said *elogind*.
                  – Considering some major apps install *elogind* during their installation, then if they are installed after the above cleanup then subsequent running the above purge *elogind* will bring antiX back to ‘clean’ state. If this is true, then why a need for rebuilding some Debian packages to not include *elogind*? Is it not simpler to run the above purge instead for those interested, keeping packages intact? This is just for my understanding…
                  Thanks and regards…

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

I saw someone linking to this in Facebook.

Doesn’t this package simply remove the disable autospawn?

Description: Debian configuration overrides for pulseaudio
empty package which overrides upstream configuration.
                     .
                       - remove /etc/pulse/client.conf.d/00-disable-autospawn.conf

This is only for sessions NOT using desktop-session-antiX (like xfce, lxde, kde…).
Wouldn’t you have simply edit this file (/etc/pulse/client.conf.d/00-disable-autospawn.conf or follow the instruction dolphin_oracle explained in its video?
                    https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/kde-install-help-on-runit-core/#post-34792
This package should not be needed at all.

In antiX, using desktop-session, edit desktop-session’s startup file and add pulseaudio -D & before the volume-icon entry, as explained at least 10 times in the forum.

                    antiX Live system enthusiast.
General Live Boot Parameters for antiX.

Did you experience problems with any USB or internal drive not mounting automatically? Do you need to mount these partitions from the terminal? DO they only mount as root?

If I use a SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive 128 GB Type C USB drive, it works perfectly with my Dell Inspiron 5558. Therefore I do not suspect any USB drive issues, not with this hardware. I’ve also used other USB drives with this same hardware and they also work well.

I conclude that: 1) My system works fine with this release and so does my USB drive.

If, however, I take the exact same image and attempt to install it on some new hardware that I recently purchased, an Acer Aspire 5 Model A515-55 with a NVME SSD, I can’t get it to respond at the USB boot prompt. I find this odd because I’ve been able to install both Siduction 2021 and Debian Bullseye 11 on the Aspire with multiple different USB drives.

If it’s any consolation, I experience the exact same issue with MX Linux. I was able to install a fresh instance of the latest MX Linux 21 on my Dell Inspiron 5558 without any trouble, but both MX Linux and antiX won’t even show their boot menus on the Aspire. I have Debian, siduction, PCLinuxOS and Endeavor OS installed on it right now, and I was also able to get KDE Neon installed on the Aspire.

If you’d rather see this information elsewhere, let me know and I’ll copy the contents of this message, post it elsewhere and remove it here. For the moment, since you asked about it.

The Acer Aspire 5 A515-55 is NOT a Chromebook. Delivered, this discount model comes with a simple version of Windows 10. I had to figure out how to change the system configuration to get rid of Windows; that took me a while; in essence, I finally figured out how to enable AHCI instead of some other SATA default configuration that had “locked” Windows 10 in place.

The Acer Aspire 5 A515-55 does not seem very friendly to antiX; I’ve not been able to install antiX. Instead, PCLinuxOS, Endeavor OS, KDE Neon, and siduction made it, and it took me 2-3 weeks to find four distros that would successfully install.

Because it has an SSD and a 10th Gen Intel Core processor base, performance is pretty good for such an inexpensive solution, but it’s full of compromises, few of which make putting Linux on it an easy exercise. I was successful, but a lot of reading and research, failures and retries took place before I managed to get around it. There are probably a dozen other computers with similar overall performance that might make a safer choice. Given those limitations, once I conquered a few of those, it does run some distros; MX and antiX are not among those I’ve had success with, so it’s the first computer I’ve ever owned that has had issues with either distro. It could be that I’m not “clever enough”; given that my Dell Inspiron 5558 and the old collection of ancient IBM Thinkpad and HP 5000 series laptops run antiX and MX very well, I run ’em there, and run the others on this one.

Hi and thanks for the prompt reply. My machine is down at the moment as I have been making some hardware changes.
There are two display adaptors installed, a Matrox card and on on-board Caicos (Radeon) I shall get the details after I have sorted out memory, (dead stick supplied courtesy of Ebay). My problem with the normal Control Panel>Settings route is that I only am offered one resolution. Clearly I have a problem.
The Bios has a display switch for internal or external and I am trying to get the Caicos to work. I shall try your command but meanwhile here’s what I tried earlier and I believe will tell you what you want:-

You just need a newer kernel than the default 4.9 for support for the CPU Intel Core i5-8259U.
You could either try with the release with kernel 4.19, or check out the antiX21 beta (selecting a modern kernel in the boot menus), if you don’t mind giving us a bit of feedback on how it performs on newer hardware (optional).

The new advances in live-boot options for future releases will give the chance of selecting different kernels, between one compatible with old hardware and one with improved support for newer hardware.

You also have the option of booting the core release for 19.4 live-USB on Virtualbox on Windows/Mac (whatever you use), install there a newer 5.10 kernel from the package installer, remaster and change the live kernel. Then it should have no problem at all on your hardware, and you can follow the steps by dolphin_oracle to install KDE as the main desktop environment.

There are different options available to achieve the same thing. That is the great advantage (and curse) of Linux.

Hi, I am trying to install 19.3 Full on this machine:
Machine: Type: Laptop System: BESSTAR TECH LIMITED product: U820
As you can see from the attached inxi output, no drivers were found for Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 and Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200. The boot procedure reaches “udev done” and halts.

                              1. Is it possible to boot to any of the desktops on this machine from a live usb?
                              2. Does it make sense to use Antix in this device or is it better to install MX – I would like to eventually follow this tutorial: antiX-core 19.1 – create a kde plasma live-usb
                              3. Can I provide the missing drivers from a pendrive? If anyone instructed me what to do, I’d gladly follow.

by the way mmcblk1p3 is ext4

bootrepair relies on the output provided by lsblk command.
Does the following indeed report ext4 ?
                                /bin/lsblk -o FSTYPE

                                >>>> kept giving me an error warning saying ext2 doesn’t allow embedding

grepped the sourcecode for the bootrepair program and found zero occurrences of “embed”,
so I websearched “emmc linux ext2 doesn’t allow embedding” and learned the following:

                                https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/174206/warning-file-system-ext2-doesnt-support-embedding-but-my-system-isnt-emb

You are getting the warning because you are installing grub to a partition instead of the MBR. This means grub can not be embedded in the unused space between the MBR and the first partition. Instead it has to have the list of blocks that /boot/grub/core.img resides in placed into the MBR. This setup is subject to being broken by things like defrag and so is not recommended, hence the warning. Since it is only a warning, you can ignore it.

But, to tie this up nicely.. IF you want to play around with having KDE plasma on antiX, do as Xecure suggeted above. Start as guided through the video series by dolphin_oracle, starting from the antiX core version.

(I’ve done it, and I discovered something: I discovered that I don’t like KDE very much!) 😉

                                  confirmed antiX frugaler, since 2019
