      After dist-upgrading this chromebook from AntiX 17 to AntiX 19.
      Plus. Since the drive is only 16 gig for / and /home both.

      I’ve been wondering . I am left with a lot of cruft named old.

      Which is a good thing in it’s own way as these are your backups when you upgrade.

      I already installed trash-cli with apt-get. My plan was to use

      trash /path/to/file

      For each line I showed in locate command. Trash cli won’t delete nothing yet and things can be restored from trash with

      1st to see what is there

      trash-list

      To delete all listed at once

      trash-empty

      If I wanna keep and restore what I put in trash

      restore-trash

      The restore-trash command will list all of the files in the trash with a number next to each one. To restore a file simply enter the number next to the file.

      Since before upgrade I was cruzing at about 7 gig for my full install. Now upped to

      harry@biker:~
      $ df -h
      Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
      udev            1.9G     0  1.9G   0% /dev
      tmpfs           389M  488K  388M   1% /run
      /dev/sda1        15G  8.5G  5.5G  61% /
      tmpfs           5.0M  4.0K  5.0M   1% /run/lock
      tmpfs           777M   25M  753M   4% /dev/shm
      tmpfs           1.9G     0  1.9G   0% /sys/fs/cgroup
      tmpfs           389M  4.0K  389M   1% /run/user/1000

      I might get lucky and slim and trim down thing to back to normal. Like a fresh install .

      Any holes in my idea?

        Yes, I ran Manjaro for a while too, then SlackoPup. If another distro is better once each are tuned, you should choose the best one.

        I like your everything I used in the past 2 weeks idea for choosing what deserves to be on the toolbar. See pic. If autohide is used, I suggest increasing the AutoHideDelay in preferences to 1000

        Soon my thinking is to assign some shortcuts, maybe like winkey W LO writer, Winkey C, for calc, Winkey M for claws. Thats more about kids learning that this is their system, apart from the core system they can safely change most anything. As long as they keep saving important data that is.

        I like keyboard shortcuts also. I suggest creating a pop-up screen with a list of all the keyboard shortcuts and what they do both in German and English, even, maybe.

        Where do I go to change the menu entry Wünsche, gave up trying to find tahat.

        Wünsche is the German used for the IceWM Preferences option. That could be coming from IceWM itself at https://github.com/bbidulock/icewm/blob/icewm-1-4-BRANCH/po/de.po on line 1631. See picture. You or NoClue or Caprea could ask them to correct it.

        PS: If you are using Claws-mail you could change the IceWM preferences to turn on the mail status monitor, have it make a sound when emails arrive, show how many new mails are there, and when you click it, it will pop up Claws mail.
        Settings for mail:

        $ cd ~/.icewm
        bobc@xps15:~/.icewm
        $ cat preferences | grep -i "mail"
        # Show mailbox status on task bar
        TaskBarShowMailboxStatus=1 # 0/1
        # Beep when new mail arrives
        TaskBarMailboxStatusBeepOnNewMail=1 # 0/1
        #  Count messages in mailbox
        TaskBarMailboxStatusCountMessages=1 # 0/1
        # Execute taskbar applet commands (like MailCommand, ClockCommand, ...) on single click
        # Delay between new-mail checks. (seconds)
        MailCheckDelay=30 # [0-86400]
        # Mailbox path (use $MAIL instead)
        # MailBoxPath=""
        # Command to run on mailbox
        MailCommand="claws-mail"
        # WM_CLASS to allow runonce for MailCommand
        MailClassHint="mutt.XTerm"
        # Command to run when new mail arrives
        # NewMailCommand=""
        bobc@xps15:~/.icewm

        COULD A MODERATOR PLEASE REMOVE icewm-mail.jpg for me? I am adding icewm-mail-2.jpg to replace it. Thanks 🙂

          Welcome to antiX DiverDan. I do miss KDE sometimes and I have a VM with a KDE spin of MX. But I have found IceWM quite adequate once I got used to it. It became necessary for my older systems. antiX runs the best for me on Pentium-III and Pentium-4 systems. I run MX/XFCE on Core2 or Core iX systems.

            InVirtualBox I keep a basic version of my System. That one does not have this issue either.
            So it is caused by additional packages.

            If I run ‘# apt install -d libsystemd0’ the result is:

            # apt install -d libsystemd0

            Do you have any ideas?

            If I do not find a simple solution, my strategy will be:
            – Wait a week or two. Maybe the issue will be solved by upgraded packages.
            – If not, I shall perform ‘# apt full-upgrade’ and then reinstall the removed packages.

              Chrome Book interface. > Old dog new tricks. Kinda on da fence on this one. > One Chrome Book Acer C710 bought cheap off ebay by me has screwed up write protect on da bios chip. So I am crouton Ubuntu XFCE on it with the latest LTS Ubuntu version. Still the 16 gig SSD in it. It works OK. Better than the unsupported Google Parrot OS on it.
              Which was required for the Crouton installation process. I just went with basic xfce with no buncha stuff pulled in.

              Some of these new Lumina and Budgie stuff. I leave that to the younger blood with fresher brains than I.

              Off topic stuff:

              Other Acer C710. Which had a work able write protect bypass. Runs AntiX 17 Full with John Lewis Bios installed by me.
              No fav desktop environments on it. It also has the stock small 16 gig SSD drive in it. So trying to keep space open on drive.

              At one time. On my AntiX Chromebook install. I inserted a 32 gig Fat 32 SD card. Symlinked everything from /home/username to it.
              Since /home was installed to / during initial procedure on a single 16 ssd ext 4 partition.
              Edited /etc/fstab accordingly to mount the card on boot since it was now a spare hard drive.

              But. Like all good experiments. I crashed and burned it with a improper power down < battery died while running >
              I forgot to run live and repair corrupted files on card with Gparted and using check < unmount, then right click mouse and pick check >.
              So I pulled it. Put it back in da camera.

              It was a good learning experience for me.

                Yes, the conflict seems to be related to KDE packages only.
                If I deinstall libkf5auth5, all my KDE packages (Falkon, k3b, Kexi, Tellico) will be deinstalled too.
                Then I can run ‘#apt full-upgrade’ without problems.
                But if I then want to reinstall Falkon, k3b, Kexi and Tellico, the message is ‘unmet dependencies’.
                So I have reinstalled my backup, because I want to keep these programs.
                There is only one package on hold: impress 0.11.1-1.1 (version 0.12.0-2 does not work properly).

                The output of ‘#apt update && apt list –upgradable && apt full-upgrade’:

                  There are new versions of elogind, libelogind0 and libpam-elogind in the debian-sid-repo – Version: 239.1+20181112+gd4a3f291e395+nosubmodule-1+debian1.
                  In the antiX-sid-repo there still is version 239.1-0.1.

                  This causes conflicts with libkf5auth5, libkf5configwidgets5, libkf5kiocore5 and libpolkit-qt5-1-1.
                  In the consequence ‘# apt full-upgrade’ is impossible, unless you deinstall all kde related software (i.e. falkon, k3b, kexi, tellico). ‘#apt upgrade’ is still working.

                    You can’t go wrong with EITHER MX-17 (or any newer updates), and the same is true with antiX 17.1 or anything coming along. Both of them are handy because they can be upgraded fairly easily, but even if you choose to install a newer version, they both have good provisions for:

                    1. Retaining your home directory, where you can store the typical things you like to keep.
                    2. Creating snapshots, updates, and backups of whatever features you want to save, preserve, or retain.

                    There are other distributions that offer some of these features, but antiX and MXLinux both provide:

                    1. Ease of use and good software choices (MXLinux favors ease of use and moderate resource use with good software, and antiX favors the smallest and most efficient software that gets the job done.

                    2. MXLinux is a little bit easier (by a small percentage) to the newest Linux users, but antiX can work with even older hardware than MXLinux can, so while both are GREAT choices, MXLinux has a slight edge in ease of use and antiX has a good edge when a minimal resource system is essential.

                    The fact is, though, that you can BUILD an MXLinux or MXLinux-like system using antiX, and MXLinux represents a REPLACEMENT of the older, easy to use MEPIS desktop system with MX, using the Xfce desktop environment (instead of the somewhat heavier, more complex KDE once used in MEPIS).

                    An example of a distribution that is fairly small and flexible that antiX has “learned from” at times is Puppy. It’s a good alternative for some people to antiX, though I personally prefer the tools and methods in antiX over the also very good Puppy “family” of distributions.

                    An example of a distribution that is reasonably light and has easy to use software is Peppermint Linux. The Peppermint software comes from the same software hierarchy because it is derived at the core from Debian-based software like antiX and MX, but it has additional lineage in the Ubuntu and Mint branches. Peppermint is lighter than either Ubuntu or Mint. I think antiX can probably undercut the size of a Peppermint image, but they should be “similar in size”. I’d say that Peppermint probably falls somewhere between antiX and MX in image size. The software it offers is very easy and so is packaging; it offers a front end to software updates that is downright easy. If it works for you, it’s great.

                    Being a user, administrator, designer, and one who has recommended directions for our choices over the years, I can tell you that MXLinux is more complete than Peppermint, both in application software and in configuration tools. Some would argue that Peppermint is easier in some ways; I wouldn’t argue, but that is like “Splitting hairs”. To me, the differences are NOT major, they are differences in methods and preferences.

                    When it comes to light, configurable systems, the “balance” between “light” and “configurable” is outstanding in antiX; the only way you could exceed it in any way is to configure it yourself, which is precisely what the antiX tools allow you to do.

                    While my statements, observations, and opinions are just that, “statements, observations, and opinions”, I believe that they are reasonable statements, and likely to be agreed upon by most people who visit here and use this software, but perhaps not universally accepted by those who prefer other distributions. I’d encourage any reader to try out our software, and to be free to use and examine other software as well, and use whatever suits your personal needs and preferences best.

                    Free and open software encourages this kind of examination and evaluation.

                      Hi All,

                      I have two AntiX installations, one 32-bit and one 64-bit. They are both over a year old and I am using the testing repo. I have not been able to update either PC for more than a month. I will focus on the 64-bit installation here. First some preliminaries:

                      On the older 32-bit install, I tested this by installing the dependancy ‘kde-runtime’ which lead to the installation of a lot of packages and another dependancy. In addition, I am not even using KDE (am I?, using the standard DE).

                      Am I simply going to have to wait until the testing packages are sorted out? Is there something else I should be doing?

                      Any/all help is greatly appreciated.

                        I finally did a build up from core, I used IceWM and roaming WiFi. I did it on the old Dell D620. I should be able to get memory used to about 65.0 mb. I’m at 71.0 mb now, but that’s using Xterm and 5 getty sessions, no Conky, no Background. I just wanted to see if I could get it to work…

                        I didn’t have major problems. The worst problem was getting X to run when not root, needing to add 2 lines to /etc/X11/Xrapper.config.

                        allowed_users=console
                        needs_root_rights=yes

                        I will see if I can get the history and a memory readout next time I bring up the browser. I suppose its not totally realistic with no conky or screensaver, but it was quite an adventure to get it loaded and get X windows to come up and work.

                        Memory footprint:

                         Private + Shared = RAM used	Program

                        216.0 KiB +  54.0 KiB = 270.0 KiB	startx

                        =================================

                        So what did I install on top of core? I use a program called comm to compare the antix install list to a current list, and what wasn’t there in core is listed here. My notes say I should (ie untested at this point) be able to process add list onto a core install with:
                        xargs -a pkgschgd.add.txt apt-get install`

                        Too bad I haven’t been able to figure out how to port ksnakeduel to a non-kde environment. It really brought a lot in with it. But I like playing it, oh well.

                        Menus are working, but many programs aren’t on them. Haven’t investigated that, yet.

                        I don’t like the standard theme, wish I had my rollup shade windows, oh well.

                        Anyway, for one evening’s work I did fairly well…

                        Anyone know a way to take this list and remove from it all the packages required by any other on the list?

                          antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

                            It keeps getting bigger and bigger:)
                            Also I like that you showed what they are based off of. nice.
                            I think I’ll stick to antix on mine but I might do MX on my daughters laptop
                            has KDE NEON right now and she doesn’t care for it.

                              Usability is what matters. Not for nothing do distributions rise in rankings like mx or q4os and others. That’s what matters.
                              Ubuntu is constantly changing everything and trying to score with fat, slow desktops like Gnome and KDE. These are very tough and do not add to the user-friendliness. Carnonical has to ask users what they want, but then they do something else. Small Distris like these are automatically closer to the user and can respond accordingly. The result shows that this way is the right one.
                              AntiX is based on Debian but the implementation sets the tone. I also know Distris with SystemD as init. SysVinit was not the reason to try AntiX.

                              I am not a professional who can build a kernel but I know how to help if it gets stuck here and there. A search engine helps me find a solution. I would describe myself as an advanced. Help for others in an English-speaking forum is difficult for me, since there is already a certain language barrier. I use a translation tool. 🙂

                              A solution to get WICD in the Autostart I found here with the search function. :-))

                                (moving this topic to “Software” subforum. If/when we agree it is “solved”, hope to see it moved to Tips-n-Tricks subforum)

                                Have you read this page? ClawsMail wiki :: plugins

                                How do I configure gpg-agent and the PGP plugin?

                                Attempts to use your gpg key to sign/encrypt messages will fail with a ‘Signature failed’ message without even asking you for your password if:

                                Your OS automatically starts the gpg-agent daemon AND
                                GPGME is properly configured to use the right GnuPG version (see How do I enable GPG support in Claws Mail?) AND
                                you only have the CURSES based pinentry program installed AND
                                you started claws-mail from a menu or icon

                                (Note: my Fedora Core 4 workstation install was configured this way). The solution is to make sure that you have the pinentry-gtk, pinentry-qt or pinentry-qt4 programs installed. Claws Mail will then present the pinentry dialog box to get your GPG passphrase.

                                You can tell if this is working by the dialog box presented to you for your passphrase. The pinentry dialog is a little uglier than the Claws Mail version, and the window title is ‘pinentry’.

                                One advantage of using the gpg-agent over Claws Mail password dialog is that the password caching then works with other applications using the gpg-agent (eg the command line when you specify –use-agent).

                                If it still refuses to work you might want to try the following steps:

                                Make sure your ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf contains the line

                                use-agent

                                Create a file ~/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf with the following contents:

                                pinentry-program /usr/bin/pinentry-qt4
                                no-grab
                                default-cache-ttl 1800

                                Add the following line to some startup script. (In case of KDE you could use ~/.kde/env/gpgagent.sh
                                The filename does not matter, the contents of ~/.kde/env/ is sourced by startkde)

                                eval “$(gpg-agent –daemon)”

                                Note: If you make any changes to ~/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf while gpg-agent is running you will need to restart gpg-agent for the changes to take effect.

                                  I doubt we will make an official KDE flavour of antiX. But that is something that you could easily do with the iso-snapshot tool. People have made KDE flavoured MX snapshots. IIRC, maintenance took some work since not everything KDE worked seamlessly with MX. If you are really serious about a KDE flavour then after making a KDE snapshot you could look into our build-iso tool which is used for making all of the MX and antiX distribution iso files.

                                  You can see the three flavours of antiX: full, base, and core as starting points for people to create their own custom systems. Once you’ve customized the system to your liking, you are just a live-remaster or an iso-snapshot away from making it your own. You’ll have your customized system on live media. You can use it to install on other machines, or as a backup of your system. Distribute it to others as a snapshot iso, use it as a rescue boot device, or take your system with you in your pocket on a live-usb.
