I can’t find a solution to disable the touchpad, which is really necessary.

Have tried to install the touchpad-indicator which was a god tool for me long ago.
It is in the atareao repos , but when I do ‘sudo apt-get repository ppa:atareao/atareao’
I get the ‘invalid operation repository’ – ‘Ungülige Operation repository’ (German).

Any way to disable the touchpad is fine even total.
      Thanks.

Sometimes, this one laptop (not the same one as above, see terminal outputs below) seems to never boots at all. Black screen and frozen cursor seem to remain forever. Slim login screen seems to never come. This seems to happen when ethernet cable or WiFi adapter is connected before booting (about the correction, see my next post). This and that threads look to me probably relevant to this one.

Hi. I have already written here about having the same issue.
My system is not dual boot. I have Nvidia; not ATI-Radeon.
I notice that the times I don’t have the issue are the times the WiFi adapter is disconnected before rebooting.

Some info that might be useful to MSI Wind netbook users. Please add yours.

              1. Useful link:
              https://www.linuxsecrets.com/archlinux-wiki/wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MSI_Wind_U100.html

              2. sentelic touchpad
The touchpad was too sensitive, constantly scrolling and clicking spontaneously. The suggestions given in the archwiki solved the problem. It was necessary to change first line of rc.local to /bin/bash

The gui fspc (which looks good but doesn’t do much) is here.
              It requires libpng12.
gdebi reports another dependency and refuses to install the fspc deb, but I extracted it and found that fspc works without it. Run with sudo, otherwise it won’t save changes.

              3. BIOS
In order to overclock, I recently updated the original bios, EN011IMS.106. Version 10G provided by msi disabled the usb, thus wifi, making computer unusable. I located version 109 at TousLesDrivers.com, flashed it, and all is well, overclocking works.

In reply to: I tried Manjaro I3

              Member

As for Manjaro itself, they really have some hardware support issues that should have been figured out and cured long ago. I can understand after having 50% of my machines refuse to boot, why their Distrowatch ratings are falling. I can’t always “just try a different machine”, especially with a relatively slow system, which refuses to boot on my fastest machines.

That can’t be done if you try to be cutting edge and newest versions of everything. For example, Catalyst non-free graphics needed old version of Xorg. Manjaro tried to keep them as long as possible, but some day they had to discontinue support. Same with older Nvidia cards which non-free drivers stopped working with new Xorg 1.20. Manjaro decided not to ship xorg-server-1.19 as a separate package. And there are also some obscure in-kernel drivers for legacy hardware which can be eneabled at compile time, but they are labled as “dangerous”. They are disabled in Manjaro kernels. Maybe they are enabled in antiX kernels, I didn’t take the time to investigate antiX kernel config closely. To sum up, Manjaro takes older hardware into consideration, but it’s not suited as a “retiremnt home” for every sort of old hardware.

One thing I learned from this discussion, and thanks to eugen for making it clear, is that we really should have a way to easily/quickly “Display KeyMap” that instantly shows the current keyboard and mouse mapping (lol, how do you do that for the touchpad???), and the first time in, it should pop up by itself, and do that every time you login, until you unclick the box saying to keep showing it after every login. I might have survived adapting to I3 if that had been there for me. Maybe eugen would have survived adapting to IceWM if it had been there for him.

If I really wanted I could have found the answer in http://download.tuxfamily.org/antix/docs-antiX-17/FAQ/icewm.html :

                What about the keyboard shortcuts?
CC -→ Desktop -→ Edit IceWM Settings -→ keys. The syntax is simple. Alt+Ctrl is equivalent to the “Super” key.

But I wasn’t too eager and IMHO it is not the point to force feed a user with information with MS Office sort of pop ups with “useful” tips. 😉

                In reply to: Trackpad sensitivity

                Member
                Klaas Vaak

Wow, this is incredible, the amount of work you put into my issue when you don’t get anything out of it except a “thank you”. Many thanks.
                  Just a couple of remarks/questions.

You probably edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/synaptics.conf (or something similar like 50-synaptics.conf),

                  Yes, it was /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/synaptics.conf.

and modified the Option “VertScroll” “1” to “0”. To disable it. In some trackpads, it is “DeltaVertScroll”, and instead of decreasing the number, one needs to increase it to make scrolling slower.

I set “VertScroll” to “0” because I had read that is the way to disable it.

Checking just in case: when applying those changes, did you check “Enable mouse configuration on startup” to on? You probably did, but I wanted to be sure.

You did well to ask me, because it was NOT enabled!! I am actually surprised the default setting is to be not enabled. Anyway, I enabled it.

                  A) “Difficulty: Easy”- Reduce mouse-wheel sensitivity with imwheel (worked on my trackpad, found solution on mx wiki: https://mxlinux.org/wiki/hardware/mouse-tweaks/, I set it to “1” instead of “3” and followed the suggestion in the comment on how to start imwheel only stopping button4 and button5).
                  'imwheel --kil --buttons "4 5"
To make it permamnent you must add the same command to the startup file for your selected window manager (I am sure you will find an answer in the forum for whatever WM you are using).

This seems to me to apply more to a physical mouse – got the same impression from the link. I have not implemented this.

                  B) “Difficulty: Medium” Modify how the trackpad “works” with xinput. (Worked on my laptop)
Install xinput. Once installed, open a terminal and execute:
                  xinput list
See what id the touchpad has. In my case, it is “ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad, id=13”
                  Use the list-props option
                  xinput list-props device-id
where device-id is the one you have observed in xinput list before. This will display a list of all the different behaviors that can be modified for this device. For me it was:
                  xinput list-props 13

On my machine it is exactly the same: id # 13

If instead of disabling it, I want to increase the “scrolling distance” (reduce scrolling sensitivity) I would change “Synaptics Scrolling Distance· (initially set to 58, 58)
                  xinput set-prop 13 “Synaptics Scrolling Distance” 200 200
This made my trackpad scrolling veeeery slow (less sensitive)
(more info (but not exactly the same) here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticsTouchpad)

That is exactly what I wanted to do, except I set the numbers each to 100 to see the effect, and maybe adjust a bit more afterwards.

In fact, I checked what the various parameters for the touchpad in my Mint OS are on my other computer, and adjusted a few more on the AntiX computer to the same values.
There is only 1 parameter that baffles me: Synaptics Off. On my AntiX computer it is set to 0, on my Mint computer it is set to 2. I have not changed this on my AntiX computer, and the touchpad is active. I have not been able to get good info on this – do you know what it means?

I must say, this xinput route has given me a bit more hope of not having to replace AntiX on my eMMC computer. So I’ll ask my wife to work with the computer a bit more and see if there is any change.

@rokytnji & @skidoo: sorry for the somewhat late reply, but I was busy trying to figure out settings and combinations thereof. I 1st set the vertical scrolling in one of the system files (can’t remember exactly which one) to zero, which seemed to help a bit, but no completely.

You probably edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/synaptics.conf (or something similar like 50-synaptics.conf), and modified the Option “VertScroll” “1” to “0”. To disable it. In some trackpads, it is “DeltaVertScroll”, and instead of decreasing the number, one needs to increase it to make scrolling slower.

So I subsequently followed @rokytnji‘s suggestion, and 1st set the threshold to 60 (was 1), but that did not do it, then set the acceleration to zero (was 2) and that seems to have done the trick.

Checking just in case: when applying those changes, did you check “Enable mouse configuration on startup” to on? You probably did, but I wanted to be sure.

I was too quick off the mark: none of my actions have resolved the issue.

For the trackpad problem, I started xev on my laptop to see what keys appeared when using the scroll part of the trackpad. I should have guessed: Button4 and Button5 (mouse wheel).

So, after spending some time researching the trackpad problem, I propose two “solutions”:

                    B) “Difficulty: Medium” Modify how the trackpad “works” with xinput. (Worked on my laptop)
Install xinput. Once installed, open a terminal and execute:
                    xinput list
See what id the touchpad has. In my case, it is “ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad, id=13”
                    Use the list-props option
                    xinput list-props device-id
where device-id is the one you have observed in xinput list before. This will display a list of all the different behaviors that can be modified for this device. For me it was:
                    xinput list-props 13
Each device might be different, so pay attention to what you want to modify. In my case, I wanted to modify “Synaptics Edge Scrolling” to disable scrolling, which was initially set to “1, 0, 1”
                    xinput set-prop 13 “Synaptics Edge Scrolling” 0 0 1
If instead of disabling it, I want to increase the “scrolling distance” (reduce scrolling sensitivity) I would change “Synaptics Scrolling Distance· (initially set to 58, 58)
                    xinput set-prop 13 “Synaptics Scrolling Distance” 200 200
This made my trackpad scrolling veeeery slow (less sensitive)
(more info (but not exactly the same) here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticsTouchpad)

I have played a bit with xinput settings when figuring out how my touchscreen worked, but I really don’t know enough. I recommend you copy all the list-props output and save it to a file so you can reset any changed options incase something goes wrong.

Another easy way would be to try syndaemon. open a terminal and type
                      syndaemon -i 2 -d
This will disable the touchpad while typing only. And will stay during your session.

If you like to make this behaviour permanent, you can write it in the startup-file of your desktop.

Edit the startup in the hidden ~/.desktop-session folder in home
                      syndaemon -i 2 -d &

Cool! That one works. Made it permanent sort of thing in the startup file.
                      Thanks for that, caprea!

                          HI

Just got antiX 17.4 installed on an older ASSUS X557 laptop.
Needed a bit of advice, as I kept putting the GRUB in the wrong place the first couple of times.

Anyway, it’s installed now and working pretty nicely, if I do say so.

I had antiX installed about two years ago on this laptop, but got sidetracked by getting back into some studying and all that fun stuff at University.

I did replace the hard drive on this old number with a new solid state drive. So it’s definitely running much better now than when I first bought it quite some time ago when it came installed with Window 8.

Everything seems fine on it for now. Just need to check out how to disable the touchpad to keep it from making a mess of my typing and a few other fiddly things. But I’ve posted messages asking for help on those little things elsewhere in the forums.

Just thought I’d say my piece and say that antiX is working some nice for keeping an older computer useful.

                          Thanks!
                          Cheery Bye!

                            Hi!

I got antiX working on my ASSUS X55U nicely now.
Except the cursor is prone to flying all over the place when I’m typing.

Any suggestions for the best way to disable that when the mouse is plugged in or when you’re typing?

                            Thanks in advance!

On the subject of laptop keys I found this in an icewm keys file on the web. I think I will try a few since I have many laptops with different kays on them, and xev says these names for them:

                              # A list of all valid keyboard symbols can be found in
                              # /usr/include/X11/keysym.h, keysymdefs.h, XF86keysym.h, …

                              # XF86. Valid modifiers are Alt, Ctrl, Shift, Meta, Super and Hyper.

                              # /usr/include/X11/XF86keysym.h on my older antiX system has a lot in it, not saying I’d want to try mapping it all, but just curious if they would work if there and mapped? What’s odd is that the file doesn’t exist on my testing system, yet the mute key worked when mapped in keys by name. I think it would be pretty cool if these keys worked by default in antiX as long as it didn’t cause other people trouble. It seems silly to have all these keys labeled on the keyboard that don’t work just because nobody went to the trouble of mapping them.

If understanding you right, you like to disable your touchpad during writing.
                                You could try syndaemon
                                syndaemon -i 1 -d
The one is one second locking time, change it to your needs.
This will only stay till the next boot, but it’s possible to put it in the startup-file.

So I was working with this same laptop to get multi-seat. I nearly(?) succeeded.

                                  * I installed lightdm
                                  * I created udev rules to assign the keyboard and mouse to seat-1 (with one of these devices being a master-of-seat).
                                  * I made a xorg.conf file which I thought would do the job on the video side, but no go.

By changing the layout that is used by xinit or lightdm, I’m able to launch each X screen independently, but not together.

It seems the working Xorg.0.log has these unique lines (indicating success?):
(II) xfree86: Adding drm device (/dev/dri/card0)
                                  (++) using VT number 7

And the failling Xorg.1.log has these unique lines (indicating failure):

(EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Failed to allocate EVO core DMA push buffer

This link suggests I can’t do two displays multi-seat with one nvidia card:
                                  https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1004784/linux/mutli-seat-with-single-card/

@Dave, you said you got this to work?

I think the old forum post you are referring to is: https://antixlinux.com/forum-archive/making-a-multiuser-multiseat-antix-t2729.html
I was looking ito the automseat, I’ll have to look into this more as to make work as prescribed, I need gdm and had some troubles getting that squared away. However I do notice they in the example they are showing two video cards.

In case anyone has some advice for me… see some info below, let me know if any more could be of help. Also interestingly enough, I setup run level 3 to be console and kill lightdm, and run level 5 to start lightdm. On boot, and other times. It seems I need to start/stop lightdm and every other time X starts. When it doesn’t I get the same error:
(EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): EVO Push buffer channel allocation failed
(EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Failed to allocate EVO core DMA push buffer

There is lot of press about the Option “UseDPLib” “off”, but that doesn’t seem to help… no surprise to me as I don’t see the subsequent error: [ 38.074] (WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Timed out detecting DP displays on DP-1

                                  Below is my xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log, and Xorg.1.log:
