Chrome scores better on almost all the benchmarks on the latest iterations of the browsers. So from a pure resource perspective Chrome seems better. Of course, there is the privacy/tracking issue. On a modern computer I’m sure the perceived difference between the two is negligible in terms of responsiveness. However, on old hardware resource optimization is paramount. Maybe I’ll look into ungoogled chromium to get the benefits of chrome without the invasiveness of google.

Hi!
Was checking firefox-esr vs chrome memory usage and I consistently get that chrome uses less memory. For example, loading this forum chrome clocks in at about 150 MiB less memory used. Anyone else get this result? Could it be because the whole web is more or less designed around chrome?
That could very well be. In the very early days of Google Chrome, it was an extremely efficient, light weight, fast browser in every possible way, but it was also pretty simple and basic. Over the years it has gained many features, and of course, Google also uses it as a tool to track web page clicks, buying patterns, and a lot more. Some people are troubled by any form of tracking, whether it’s 100% personal or it simply tracks numbers and “tendencies”.
In years past, I would’ve thought that Chrome used less memory; today I think it depends which instance of a browser you use, how many tabs you use and what the memory requirements are for the pages that you visit; all of these factor into CPU, memory, and storage consumed by browsing activity.
I haven’t recently checked what uses most, least, etc. I can easily go over 1 GB of memory consumed IF my browser is open for quite a while and I visit a lot of pages with “rich” content – lots of images or scripts that execute when I click on a page or a selection. On the other hand, if I use a text only browser and look at only 1-2 pages of exclusively text, with no executable content, graphical imagery or executable content, resources can be quite reasonable, so as we often see and read: “Your Mileage May Vary” (considerably), depending on usage.

Hi anamesa girafenaine,
I use LibreWolf daily due to its excellent website acceptability, it is somewhat better
than Ungoogled Chromium in that respect.at
https://librewolf.net/installation/debian/there are instructions for adding the repo and installing a deb.
Have been using that method on antiX full for weeks now without issues, that experience applies to both runit and
sysv versions and over 3 devices.
The advantage is you will be updating using the antiX updater, apt or synaptic depending on preference.
Not sure on the actual appimage, earlier versions could be renamed adding .zip, unpacked and contents moved to opt, just
I originally unpacked to take a look at what I would be using on my system and found a familiar setup, similar to Firefox as downloaded from Mozilla, no unexpected or unexplained extras.March 4, 2022 at 4:21 pm #78542In reply to: Firefox Release Calendar

and LibreWolf. Both excellent alternatives to Moz and goog spying pinging disservices. But sadly no go on non 64 bit devices.Firefox is in any case really too heavy for many old devices, like 15 years plus and older.
ESR works fine with Zoom and most messenger applications, with widevine that is.
For youtube the lightweight applications like ytfzf work really well so the better lighter option, for those who have not yet tried ytfzf, after search tab allows multi selection.

MemberPPC
Since at least a couple of FT10 users seem to install FT10 in other people’s computers (because it’s an easier transition than using the default rox-IceWM desktop), here are some tips, that may make antiX, with FT10 easier to use by ex-Windows users:
1- Install ft10-transformation and enable that user’s preferred menu layout. You may want to enable the visual effects (choose to install compton and then create the relevant menu entry and/or add the compton command from that menu line to the startup file, not forgetting to add an “&” at the end)
2- Change some system default apps: make sure the the default file manager is zzzfm (it does not matter if you are using a rox desktop, but I’ll address that later); that the video player is “Celluloid”, and the default text editor is Leafpad
3- You may want to setup a Trash can/Recycle bin in zzzfm (search for help on the Forum on how to do that)
4- You also may want to add some extra bookmarks to zzzfm (Downloads, Documents, Music, etc)
5- if the end user uses Cloud storage, configure “Cloud” to work with the user’s default Cloud storage service. You can place a link to Cloud .desktop’s file in zzzfm, for easy access
6- If the end user will do office work, install the latest LibreOffice using the Package Installer
7- If the user is not a native English speaker, install the relevant language packs using the Package Installer (for firefox-esr and LibreOffice
8- The user may prefer to use another Browser, like Firefox (and not firefox-esr), Chromium, Chrome or even MS Edge – install those browsers, explaining that some of them do not respect the user’s privacy. also, if installing Firefox, make sure it has sound (even if you have to edit it’s .desktop file so the exec field is “apulse firefox”)
9- You may preconfigure access to some web services, like Streaming Services (Netflix, etc) or On-line Office suites (like MS Office) – you can manually add menu favorites like “firefox-esr netflix.com” or “firefox-esr gmail.com”, etc and choose a related icon. You can even manually edit a “Tile” to do the same (see the previous how-to)…
10- You may install and configure Thunderbird/Seamonkey if the user wants easy to use E-mail client and Calendar (Thunderbird is even able to use Google Calendar). There’s a Thread about how to configure gmail in seamonkey (as far as I know, Google Calendar is now unable to run in seamonkey’s calendar, the needed extension no longer works).
11- You may want to install some games from the Package Installer (add a solitaire if you want to) and even Steam, if the end user is a more than just a casual gamer…
12- If you think the end user may want to install extra software, associate, in zzzfm, .deb packages with the “debinstaller” command.P.

MemberPPC
Since I’m the one that started this thread, it’s strange to say here that last week end I installed antiX 21 full 32bits on bare metal (not on a Virtual Machine).
If it works in a 32 bits, 1 gig of RAM laptop, it works on almost every single old computer still in existence. The pros:
-I have the very latest version of a Debian based OS in a computer that is probably entering it’s 18th year of existence very soon.
– It works, and works well- I updated from antiX 19.4 runit to antiX 21 sysvi- I seem to notice a tiny bit of less fluidity on this new install, may be all on my mind, or it may be from not using a runit version, or…
– I enlarged the partition antiX uses and even install flatpak on it – I installed a single test flatpak- foliate ebook reader (since it’s not on the repository)- after finding out how to give it permition to read my home folder, it works and allows me to read my test .epub file (the ilustrated Romeu and Juliette from Project Guttenberg)- and Foliate installed from the official .deb does not work properly- most of the time it refuses to display text. The cons:
– With the new Debian base, came problems with Package Installer – that was the main reason I delayed installing antix 21 in bare metal… It seldom failed in previous antix versions- now it’s a bit hit and miss…
– I use auto log in- by default seeing the text saying which desktop I’m running is wierd and unecessary
– For the first time ever I had wi-fi problems with this device- that seems to have been solved by installing and using a new kernel
– No Seamonkey out of the box? I used it as my e-mail client, back up browser nr 2 and Calendar! What the… 🙁
– Still no .deb off-line installer out of the box- it’s bad for new users- most don’t mind learning how to use the terminal to install stuff, but most don’t want to be forced to do it because they have no other way- having to use the terminal to do basic stuff is what gives Linux a unecessary bad rap- we do have GUI’s for everything now, the terminal, in my opinion should only by used by people that prefer to use it, because it’s faster for performing most tasks, power users, or to solve serious problems
– Before going AWOL, Xecure was working on a script that allowed users to localize the apps installed on antiX with a single click- having a fully working version of that on the Control Center would be great for non English users.
– skidoo made available here on the forum (in a, for me, long ago forgotten post) a Package Installer version that had a tab that allows to install any package available in the default Debian repository straight from it- that’s a simple and great way to allow users to install 90% of all available apps- why force new users to lear how to use PI and Synaptic, if a simple singular tool does the job well? So, in this particular very old hardware, with the a new Kernel, latest LO, wordgrinder, palemoon, seamonkey, calibre, flatpak, foliate (flatpak version), mcomix, deadbeef, the default gnome games, xine media player and ft10, I still have a computer that allows me:
-To use the modern web (on firefox-esr, every single web site I tested works- it runs slow, but “runs”). Using Palemoon as my default browser (with a plug-in to be able to use Gitlab on it, and another one to make the browser look modern) works and provides a faster user experience- you can use more tabs and have more applications open while you browser, even on a 32bits CPU and just 1 gig of RAM. I don’t use any, but probably Social Networks have no reason not to work on, at least firefox-esr
-I can do all my office work with LibreOffice. If I really have to, I can use, with way less fluidity, Ofice365 on-line or Google Docs.
-I can listen to music files
-I can watch even full HD video (yeah, no kidding, full HD is not 100% fluid- but this device comes from a time where DVD’s rulled, not 4k streaming video services)
-I can watch youtube, using Smplayer
-I can access my e-mail, in a fast way- using Seamonkey
-I can read pdf’s, ebooks, digital comics
-I can play simple games (like chess, sudoku, patience, mah-jong, etc). Hell, If I wanted to, I could probably play every single DOS game I wanted, using Dosbox, and probably install MAME and play some free old games (nevermind – I can use Internet Archive to legally play lots of old games- yeah, they do have Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat there)
-all that using a simple and modern looking and very configurable interface – FT10 on top of IceWM (IceWM now has a simple GUI way for users to Tile windows- it has some flaws, but it’s great)- it’s like using a freakishly fast and impossible low on resources “antiX Desktop Environment”Because I like to push my hardware to the limit, here’s what I can’t do on antiX 21 32bits version:
-You can install Chromium, but it may not work on some 32bits CPU’s- it does not work on this one.
– Since Chromium does not work, I could not test any of the Stadia free games that Google so generously provides me (hey I think that box I had to check to use this service just said something about me sacrificing to them my first born son, right?)
-You can’t watch Netflix or any other paid streaming service on 32bits because… well Google… The libraries used to play DRM content over the Web are proprietary, and owned by Google, that some time ago decided that having a working 32 bits version is a no-no. It’s strange- since it does install in a 32bits browser but refuses to run- does anyone have old working versions that work that you can send my way?)
-Particular to all 32bits OS’s, not just antiX 21 32bits- you can’t install or use any 64bits software and this means most modern applications won’t have a version that is able to install and run- it’s no big deal for me, because almost every single thing I need to use this laptop works for me. The single exception is a .deb package that I have to use if I want to do all my work on this PC… I think of it like I owned a MacBook- it looks stylish, it works, it’s very fast, it allows me to surf the web, do office work, but I can’t install most things modern PC laptops do, like playing AAA games, etcP.

Are you using chrome or chrome based browser to watch video, the issue seems very familiar/similar to my experience before
switching off browser hardware acceleration, and removing chrome cache every start. The cache often gets Gigabyte huge in an
hour or so of video, generaly acceleration setting is on by default.
Since doing above neither vivaldi nor UngoogledChromium have locked me up.Another issue can be having debian java 11, on the system, that also caused random lock ups, to be fair, mostly in tandem with
libreoffice (known bug) for which it is non recommended by LO Org.Put in desktop session startup file.
#delete chromium cache at startup
rm -rf ~/.cache/chromiumYou can also have chromium cache in temp, must change from demo to your username as appropriate, either has the added advantage of removing many tracking vectors.
Vectors, because the startup cache contains a lot of code useful to a tracker script. It is more like a super supercookie. It is not deleted by the browser on closing
intended to never expire. Applies to Firefox or other browsers too…#Moves chromium cache to temp, thanks to xecure
#First line only needed if chromium cache exists in home
[ -d “$HOME/.cache/chromium” ] && rm -rf $HOME/.cache/chromium
mkdir -p /tmp/demo/.cache/chromium && ln -sf /tmp/demo/.cache/chromium /home/herold/.cache/chromium#mkdir -p /tmp/demo/.cache/chromium/Default && ln -sf /tmp/demo/.cache/chromium/Default /home/demo/.cache/chromium/DefaultJanuary 22, 2022 at 1:14 am #75760In reply to: jwm center all windows

Is the centered placement issue now SOLVED?
post #75731 onward should have merited a separate topic, bearing a topic title mentioning samba, eh
as a further, separate topic, discussion:
“Copy and pasting doesn’t work in antix specially using fsearch as an example.”
Yes, it does (or, said differently, it can)
The linux primary clipboard (aka primary selection) is available for use in antiX. Its usage and configuration are identical to nearly every other linux distro. For extra functionality within a desktop/gui context, same as any other distro… if you are not running a desktop environment which provides a clipboard manager component, you can install a clipboard manager utility program (e.g. debian packages: parcellite // clipit // copyQ). Specific to ROX-filer ~~ in fossapup, investigate how they achieve the custom copy command (an AppDir script?) and you can identically setup same in the ROX-filer of your antiX install. Natively, in antiX’s ROX-filer (same as when installed in other distros)… the expectation is that copy//move operations within ROX will be accomplished via drag-n-drop between multiple ROX-filer windows.rox.sourceforge.net/desktop/book/export/html/6.html
The primary selectionIf you’ve used X for a while, you’ll have discovered the middle-button-paste feature. This pastes the currently-selected text (not the clipboard!) to wherever you click. In particular, if you select some files in ROX-Filer then middle clicking into any application will paste the filenames. That includes:
Paste into Firefox’s address bar (or even just into the main window) to view that file.
Paste into an xterm to add a filename to a command.
Paste into a file Open dialog box for applications that don’t support drag-and-drop.If you select something else in another window, ROX-Filer loses the primary selection (it shows the selection greyed out). To get it back, just click on any item in the greyed-out selection.
Tip: to select files quickly by glob, use . (period). For example, typing .png will instantly select all files ending in .png. With a bit of editing of the pattern with the cursor keys, you can select on other parts of the name (e.g., all files starting with test-).

@olsztyn – this app’s main feature is, in fact, the aggregation of Streaming services.
Smtube displays a webpage that shows youtube videos and then opens those videos on a media player – on older devices, media players, that use less system resources than a modern web browser, are able to play videos much smoother. The only downside is that it takes some moments to begin loading the video that is displayed in the media player window. Since ElectronPlayer is basically a mini chromium browser with DRM extensions included, it starts to display the streamed video a bit faster (since it does not have to start downloading it).
Also, using EP, you can log on to your Youtube account and follow the channels you subscribe to, etc, without any fear of also being logged to google services in your real web browser (you can also access Youtube’s page directly from Smtube, but it’s less straightforward to open a video on a media player if you do that).
For some reason both Youtube and Netflix play much smoother in EP than in Firefox…P.

MemberPPC
I’m hijacking this thread a little bit:
Like Apple says, when users complained the antenna was obstructed when they picked up a state of the art and expensive phone, meant, hum… basically to be picked up and made use the antenna to makes calls: “you’re using it wrong” 🙂we really can’t use equipment with 20 or so years in the modern web. We have to adapt- the OP provided some tips on how to do this, but it’s just like trying to use a horse carriage in a freeway – we probably get run over by what is buzzing past the freeway.
I think we have to compartmentalize- to use web sites that are mainly text – like news sites, blogs (is that still a thing?) you can use a browser without any extras (no scripting- no JS, etc- even no pictures). To stream Youtube, use Smtube or a similar app. To access your e-mail? Use Claws or Seamonkey E-mail client, not webmail. To get the latest news, you can subscribe to a newsfeed and read everything in SeamonKey E-mail client too. You can use an app to subscribe to podcasts, and avoid getting them from the website, if that’s something you like to listen to.
You can use wttr.in to get a weather forecast strait in your terminal. If you need to translate a text to your own language, you can use the “trans” command straight on the terminal (or read my post on how to use a simple GUI script to do it). If you want to use Cloud Storage, don’t use the web based service, use an app that mounts it, so you can access your data from inside that app or using your file manager (just like it was a thumbdrive).
Do you want to access a modern web page? Close every single app you can, fire up a modern browser (firefox-esr will do it, if the latest version is able to run on your 32bits hardware, or Seamonkey, or Otter or Surf or our very own version of BadWolf- now both mangled since they relies on Webkit…) and do it, one tab at a time, and be prepared to wait for long periods of time.Let me just plug this – FT10 Transformation Pack “ft10-transformation” includes some scripts that are handy on very old hardware, even if you don’t use Ft10’s toolbar and menu, the scripts are available… Version 1.1, on the repos includes “Weather” (that fires up a fully localized wttr.in window with your local weather forecast), “News” (that shows a simple yad window with news headlines- you can use it’s button to select your countries news).
Version 1.2, when it hits the repos, will include “Cloud” (that mounts any Cloud Service and displays it in your default file manager- I inserted a button to painless configure Google Drive, every thing else you have to initial use a cli, number based menu to configure it for the first time) and “Translate” (that translates to your system’s language any highlighted text and displays the result on a yad window, from witch you can copy). That, coupled with using your e-mail account via claws or seamonkey e-mail (both now come out of the box in antiX) will help Dino age hardware survive and be useful for some more years… (You can even install Thunderbird and use it to access a google calendar or install text based messengers to keep in touch with your friends)P.

in forum Other DistrosMemberModdIt
Mint has announced that it has a new improved relationship (er sellout) with Mozilla and will receive money for user searches by the now default google engine.
Further announcement is an intended move to allow the browser updates to come directly from mozilla and be initiated from within the browser.
Means yet another sell out of the tattered remains of user privacy to big surveillance and avertising giant google.
And Mozilla can quietly add all the unique ids, studies hidden extensions it likes to user installations, I suspect that will include refreshing
or changing preferences through an /etc/firefox-esr/firefox-esr.js. or equivalent for current fox.Something we should all closely watch as that file overrides user preferences it could end up being used to ensure telemetry, health reporting or studys
are quietly switched on. Health reporting is another snide name for telemetry. I have set the file to read only. Both a .js and policies can be placed in that file and will be applied to all users, placed there kids will need to learn a bit if they want to override
for any reason, that is really easy with normal placement of user.js in home.January 13, 2022 at 11:46 am #75175In reply to: Firefox ESR Tracking enabled in INI – Fix uploaded

ahoppin wrote I’ve used Noscript with Seamonkey and Palemoon in the past. Perhaps I didn’t use it correctly. No matter what I whitelisted with it,
Captchas wouldn’t display, so some websites refused me entry.Well known and annoying, thank google for the problem, sometimes temp whilisting google com helps, other times only way is to allow scripts globaly.
Antix live works well for isolating site data, when using chrome or any other chrome based browser do delete the cache after every usage or you will have equivalent
of infinite supercookys hidden in website specific cache data areas.LTS Firefox works on most websites, even after cutting out as much of the tracking, telemetry hidden extensions as possible.
Well worth trying LibreWolf or UngoogledChromium, if you can run 64 bit that is, many sites work ok, both are pretty good privacy wise. In case of ungoogled
thre are also some useful choices in chrome settings. chrome://about/ or the more familiar about:about gives a long list of interna. chrome flags is the
equivalent to about:config.Walking alone through Chicago Riverdale, or La Chapelle in Paris, at 2 AM.
Many places in europe you would not be alone for long, the shadows are populated by the dregs of despair and scum of humanity. -
