I am sorry for being off-topic here (skidoo hates it), but I feel the need to post and congratulate Wallon. His effort and dedication to testing and translating is already commendable. Please, take good care of your free and family time. I am very thankful already for the time you can provide and would hate that it would take away anything from your real life. And don’t worry about Linux. You need to adapt to what is possible. I need to log-in to Windows to do my yearly taxes, but fortunately can do (mostly) everything else on Linux, but others may not be as lucky.

On why Google Chrome is used for official services, I once worked with a programmer who worked for the company contracted by the local government to build and maintain some public websites, and the reason they only supported (back then) Internet Explorer was because of time and budget constrains. It was easier (and cheaper) to maintain and give support to only one browser, so all public websites the company managed only worked on Internet Explorer (and of course Windows).
I don’t know how it works in the USA, but here (EU) most countries have Identity Cards that are used (with a card reader) to verify the citizen’s identity and give them access to (online) public services to pay taxes, fill out forms, etc. Alternatively, you can also use special “browser certificates” that are used to identify the user for the same purposes. Most of the times, these certificates only work on certain browsers, and many times they limit the use of the operating system, as they haven’t been tested (on them) and possible bugs could lead to Identity Theft.

Things have changed a bit, and now they support only Firefox (not so well anymore) and Google Chrome (in my country), and luckily some online services are multi-platform (including special apps for Android/iOS).

Would/could a moderator move the off-topic posts to a different thread to keep this thread on-topic?

        Dear rokytnji,

I pay a monthly subscription to VOO cable TV distributor in Belgium. If you understand French, you’ll see on the VOO forum that VOO only tests and provides support for Google Chrome (Windows 10). There used to be support for Firefox but that’s gone.

This week we noticed in my office that PCs using Google Chrome / Windows 10 had access to the Central Balance Sheet Office (Belgium) and not the other browsers. The IT people (subcontractors) have noticed this problem with our colleagues in other companies. Even with all pop-ups and cookies enabled and all ads accepted. We thought it was the firewall but it wasn’t.

We are seeing more and more of this kind of blocking. A well-known one is Netflix 4K, you need to use a minimum 3GB Nvidia card, Windows 10 and Edge Chromium.

For my daughter, the school uses an “Apschool” platform. The certificates were only recognised by Google Chrome and not for other browsers. It was scary for parents who had to make payments on this platform and who used another browser.

I use Firefox ESR, Firefox, Opera, Chromium and Google Chrome on the computers. I also need to synchronise with my smartphone. The worst thing is the smartphone, the applications do not open Opera (default browser on my smartphone) and uses Google Chrome. Also, a lot of video/TV are blocked on Opera Android (DRM enabled and all ads accepted). If it doesn’t work, I use Firefox Android which doesn’t have a translator (very annoying for the forums which are not in French). If that doesn’t work, I go back to Google Chrome like everyone else.

No more dreaming, this is today’s reality.

        Best regards,
        Wallon

          Dear Users,

I checked the Linux kernel version on both my computers.

On my desktop with antiX 21, in the Package Installer, I have the new Linux kernels 4.4.0-279 or 4.9.0-279 or 4.19.202 or 5.10.57.

On my laptop with antiX 19 Full, in the Package Installer, I don’t have the new kernels. I made the effort to put a screenshot in English of Package Installer because the installation on my laptop is in French.

The two versions of antiX do not use the same repositories or is this a bug?

          Best regards,
          Wallon

Browsers that I use on my 1 gb RAM netbook- Firefox ESR (that is too slow on your device), BadWolf (you can install it from Package Manager, activate JavaScript clicking the JS button if you want to use a JS website), Seamonkey (is comes out of the box with antix 21 beta- is a browser forked from Firefox in the Dawn of Time). If you are using a 64 bits computer, you can try Chromium (also available in Package Manager) or even better Ungoogled Chromium (google it :-), pun intended).

Note- Badwolf is very spartan- it’s a secure browser- it always run in what most browsers call incognito/anonimous mode, and has no bookmarks, history, etc. But antiX’s version is customized to have a search box, a nice start page and favorites. Without JS on (it’s off by default)- it’s very light and lets you navigate through most regular web pages. Turn on JS and you can use complex pages like Youtube, webmail, social networks (ouch). It does not play DRM video, like Netflix, HBO, etc.

                My pleasure.

Also I found that there is a high quality translator extension for Firefox (works in LibreWolf too) called ImTranslator.[1] It has most of the features you’ve talked about. In Firefox, I’ve noticed that the browser does not always create all the PDF pages like you prefer. But there’s also an ImTranslator extension that will work on the Brave browser, and that one does normally give me the proper number of PDF pages.[2] Brave browser is always kept up to date. If you need a 32-bit browser that the ImTranslator extension should work on, you could try the Vivaldi browser.

                  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/traduzir-paginas-web/

Simples:
aceda ao fórum a partir do tradutor do google:

                    https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=en&tl=pt&u=https://www.antixforum.com

                    P.

@Marcelo- I’m sleepy and almost going to bed, but try this (it should work in firefox):
Right click the part of the web page that is translated > “this frame” > “Print frame” and then choose to print it to pdf…

                        Xecure,

Yesterday Felipe was without internet access due to problems with the internet provider.

                        Answering by numbering:

                        1. I changed it again to the repository in Brazil – USP – São Paulo, following the info from mr. Brian. Previously, I had switched to evowise to try to find out if there were problems in the repositories in Brazil, because other programs after installed were not working the same way as with Chromium. What are the main repositories (the ones that receive updates first)?

                        2. I installed Palemoon (non sse2), the same as the image you posted, the version that was installed is 27.9.4 (32 bit). I have installed the {31AACE3F-736A-591B-AC51-A6EE63004677}.xpi extension, now we just have to learn how to do it. the translation works, we didn’t find an option in the right-click context menu to translate the page, and we didn’t see any option where you can click to translate the page.

                        3. Unfortunately, the formatting of my post was horrible, it wasn’t my intention, sorry for that. If I edit the previous post, it will definitely go back to the spam box. The “CODE” option includes a scrollbar, while the “B-QUOTE” option does not include this scrollbar.
The reason for my preference for “B-QUOTE” is very simple, Google Chrome and Chromium internet browsers can do the translation (good or bad, from en to pt-BR) and also allow printing to “.pdf” file of the pages of this forum translated. These “.pdf” files are for future reference (mainly for me) and are often shared in the Telegram and WhatsApp groups we participate. Felipe whenever he can help me to do this. The intention of having Google Chrome or Chormium is due to our difficulties with the English language.

                        4. I thought it was important to share as you can quickly identify where the problem is. I made it a habit to copy the tests and share, they serve as a reference for other people. And it’s really tiring, but it’s worth it if it’s to help other people solve the same problem.

Many browsers have given up on 32 bit systems and old 64 bit CPUs.

Social exclusion also occurs when developers abandon many technologies that are still in use. If we can make at least one version of Google Chrome or Chromium work on 32-bit or 64-bit antiX that have non-SSE3 processors that were abandoned by the developers of these internet browsers, without causing problems with antiX dependencies. These browsers will only be used for consultation in this esteemed forum. We were able to fully understand your explanations about the security problems of these abandoned internet browsers.

                        Mr. Brain,

It doesn’t matter for us the internet browser (Google Chrome or Chromium), we need at least a web browser that allows printing to a “.pdf” file the pages of this forum translated to pt-BR. For example, I’m typing in a Firefox-ESR 78.12.0esr (32-bit) that won’t receive the pt-BR translation package/extension by Felipe’s option, everything I write here in this post is underlined in red, this is horrible to read and it is difficult to identify typos.
Palemoon is really very fast, it looks like it’s faster than Firefox-ESR 78.12.0esr (32-bit), I hope it has the translation capabilities we so badly need.
Felipe’s computer is the one closest to where I live so we can continue the tests if necessary, the antiX that is installed on the hard disk is one of Xecure’s gifts for us Brazilians, it’s the pseudo-antiX-19 ISO. legacy-bet3_386.

                        Grateful.

                        ———-

                        Xecure,

                        1. Eu alterei novamente para o repositório do Brasil – USP – São Paulo, seguindo a informação do sr. Brian.

Many browsers have given up on 32 bit systems and old 64 bit CPUs.

                        Grato.

For those who are missing the translation feature in this forum, and want to translate the website from inside firefox, there is a firefox extension that will help translate the website you are visiting without opening it in a new tab, using google translate (it looks very similar to one already in chromium).
                          https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/traduzir-paginas-web/

You can also highlight a block of text and a small icon will appear to only translate that highlighted text, in case you don’t want to translate the whole page and only a few paragraphs.

It also claims it can work with the “No-script” plugin enabled, so you shouldn’t suffer too much when running any website on computers with limited resources.

I hope this will help those who need the translation function, at the same time it keeps the antiX forum site leaner and faster.

                            Should I get a Chromebook?

Recently I have been considering buying a Chromebook. It is mostly out of curiosity, wondering what a Chromebook is like and how I may be able to use it. But before I buy one I want to consider whether I need to spend any money to satisfy my curiosity. I have a few old computers that I can test out on Chromium OS, which is the Open Source version of what Chrome OS is based on.

Chromium is essentially Chrome OS but without the Google customization and without all of the restrictions that come with owning a Chromebook. So, I installed Chromium OS using the CloudReady software (which has recently been purchased by Google) on an old Two Core AMD All-in-One computer with 8GB of RAM. I replaced the hard drive and installed CloudReady using the instructions provided by CloudReady.

On first boot I entered my Google Workspace credentials and then opened the Chromium Browser. The browser is synced with my usual workspace that I use in my office (using Chrome on Windows 10). Everything is quite familiar at this point and I can see no difference accessing my Google Workspace with this “Chromebook” (actually Chromium OS Desktop).

Now, what about non-Google Workspace applications? Browsing the web is the same. But I like to use some local apps to do things like listening to music or printing to my home or office printer, or accessing a file on my network. Can I do these things in Chromium OS?

The answer is yes. All this stuff can be done on a Chromebook. But in order to do this stuff I need to think differently. Chrome OS is not really intended for use on the local network and for connecting to local peripherals. This is a completely different paradigm than I am used to since using DOS, Windows, and Linux for years.

For instance, let’s say I want to access a file share on my local LAN. I can’t simply set up a connection to the local share using a command line or a GUI Network Connection app. Instead, I need to install a Chrome App that supports some kind of file share that is also available in my Windows or Linux systems on the LAN. This usually means something like Google Drive or Dropbox or OneDrive. Simple permissions based file sharing over the local LAN does not seem to work since everything is done through a browser and there is no command line access by default. Chrome OS does not see anything outside of the browser. There may be some workarounds but so far I am not sure Chrome OS supports LAN file access at all.

Next, can I print directly to my office printer or scan a document to my hard drive? Again, there is no direct connection to the local printer with a cable. If the printer is wifi enabled and the printer has been set up to be found over the internet then yes, it will work – at least for printing. I’m not sure about scanning.

Can I use the “Audacious” app to play internet radio? Can I use a media player to play a CD or DVD? Umm, no. Audacious is not available as a Chrome App. In order to play an internet radio station I have to browse to the website and load the player available from that site. It is not as convenient as setting up a playlist in Audacious and just clicking on the stations I want to play. But it does work as long as the station has a player built into their website. CD or DVD? No way. Chrome OS does not support CDs and DVDs. Not even as removable drives. Nothing. But I can use a USB drive as removable media and play files from there.

File manager? Kind of. There is a simple file manager but no way to get down to fine details or handle advanced file management. I may be able to download alternate file managers. The new Chrome OS is supposed to support Android Apps and even Linux Apps, where you can use different file managers. But Chromium OS does not support these features. (I was able to get Linux to work inside of Chromium OS using the “Crouton” application. More on this subject in a later document).

Doing “normal” computing stuff like file management and file sharing, and printing and playing CD’s, is not supported. But doing anything on the web through a browser is easily accomplished. Yet, you only have the Chromium/Chrome browser. There are no options for running other browsers, like Edge or Firefox. This is expected since Chrome OS is a Google project and only supports Chrome. But it is limiting.

So, why would I want a Chromebook when I already have a Windows or Linux laptop?

I wouldn’t. For me, Chrome OS makes no sense. I’m a Linux user and I have no problem using Linux for everything I want to do with a computer. So, a Chromebook is not necessary. And I can install Chromium OS and get everything available in a Chromebook for free. (Mostly – the new Android and Linux features are different in a Chromebook. But they are mostly available in Chromium OS by alternative procedures). But I do see the appeal of the Chromebook for some users.

If you are not a “geeky” type and struggle with Windows or Linux, and you want a new laptop that “just works” without having to learn anything new, then a Chromebook may be a good choice. But be ready to change your thinking on how computers work. Everything is centered on what is now called “cloud computing”. Even local LAN networks are ignored. But if you don’t even know what a LAN is, or how to use networking tools to share information between separate computers in your own home or office, then a Chromebook may be for you. (And I may be wrong about Chrome OS and LAN Networking – it’s all new to me and I haven’t figured it all out yet).

Just remember that when you buy into a Chromebook you have surrendered your freedom of choices to Google. You will be in the Google system for computing and you cannot freely do things your own way anymore. You have to do it the Google way. That’s ok in and of itself. If you can get your work done then it doesn’t matter. But if you are used to the computing freedom of a “personal computer” you will be disappointed. Especially if you are used to Linux and the Open Source Software community. You will not have the same freedom to install what you want and use what you want. Although Google seems to now be allowing more Linux apps and Android apps, it is not the same as installing Linux from a live USB and creating what you want.

After this exercise I am no longer considering purchasing a Chromebook. But I am going to continue to experiment with Chromium OS and using Linux alongside Chromium OS. (Maybe I’ll figure out how to integrate Chromium OS in my LAN – I think the answer will be using Linux features).

Regarding Brave, Tested for a very short period,
I disliked the tracking to serve targeted advertising, was also delivered with cryptocurrency ads. Lack of transparency
regarding privacy (maybe fixwd by now) Will not install it again.

Brave does not feel faster than Ungoogled Chromium which is the browser i am using now. I block ads using the hosts list,
a one click solution is provided by antiX to set that up, highly appreciated. I also have no script running on all browsers,
for some sites I am forced to give temporary permissions, annoys me as doing that is allowing fingerprinting.. One reason I
have several browsers, I also use TOR to access some German News sites which would block me due my hosts listing blocking some
of the tracking and real time ads tzhey want to plague me with.

Palemoon is a browser i also frequently use, LibreWolf when I need FF compatibility to satisfy some websites.
I think of Librewolf as Firefox done right regarding privacy, it is fast and more responsive compared to latest FF, less crap,
tracking pinging going on in the background reason for that. NO hidden extensions, no remote access enabled. Like it.

Regarding advertizing and tracking Mozilla gets big dollars from Google and Apple for sharing data, Majority of that money flows
to the pocket (more like suitcases) of the dev sacking CEO. Read the Mozilla Foundation Balance sheets to see the money flows to
her, at least those she is unable to have hidden from the public.

Ungoogled Chromium and Librewolf browsers still among my favorites, many of the LibreWolf configuration settings
can be transferred to an LTS firefox if wished for. Network is very quiet with both, nothing like the fox pinging home
                                on every possible occasion.

Unlike Firefox. Both do not have hidden extensions (Firefox six at last check)
and importantly neither have had any remote configuration changes performed since I began to use them.

Unless the hidden extensions in Fox browser features folder are removed you are not alone in controlling your browser settings…

Librewolf runs pretty much like Firefox would if Mozilla closed the dirty tricks department and just made a decent browser.

Last straw for me on normal FF has been getting advertising on the startup screen. I was using a straight download from
Mozilla site, US English version. Mozilla is calling it recommendations again, it uses much of the limited bandwidth I pay
for so no way I can consider that acceptable.

Seems the CEO wants more than the 2,5 Million USD she was shown to have pocketed a couple of years ago. About the same amount
google paid to Mozilla for getting all search terms shared to them.

I don’t recall now which FF vsn. broke this (for me) – (still worked on v66 on old box I upgraded yesterday, but broke from at least v84 thru latest v89.0.2), but whenever I hover the mouse over an HTML link in a page that contains a TITLE=”title” describing the link, the popup “tooltip/balloon” pops up for a fraction of a second then disappears (before a human eye can read it) – Should remain until mouse moves! I googled and found NOTHING except enabling “browser.chrome.toolbar_tips” in about:config (already enabled) leading me to believe that one of my many custom FF or theme settings was to blame, however, after creating a completely NEW “factory default” profile w/no settings, addons or themes, the problem persisted. I just happened to notice that on the old, WORKING FF (v66) the popup tooltip appeared just below and to the right of the cursor, but the “flash & gone” version would popup with the mouse cursor right in the middle of the left edge. This led me to suspect that somehow when the tooltip popped up the mouse cursor was now ON the tooltip leading FF to believe that mouse had “moved” to another “window” (the tooltip) which normally causes the tooltip to be removed? Perhaps adding an offset into userChrome.css might fix this, and I remembered previously adding a similar offset there when FF buggered the little “previous entry” popup menu under text-entry fields a good while back which caused those popups to COVER the text field (I had had to add a vertical offset the height of the textbox font to fix that back to just UNDER the text fields, so I could see what I had typed in). So, more googling led to this FIX (modified from https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1192749 which provided the nessessary tags for tooltips):

                                  1) Add a “chrome” subdirectory to your FF config (if it does not already exist):

                                  /home/user/.mozilla/firefox/YOUR PROFILE/chrome/

                                  2) touch userChrome.css #(if it does not already exist)

                                  3) Add the following code:

/* Add an x and y offset from the mouse curser to place the popup tooltip balloon when hovering over links w/descriptive titles: */
                                  #btTooltip,
                                  #un-toolbar-tooltip,
                                  #tooltip,
                                  .tooltip,
                                  #aHTMLTooltip,
                                  #urlTooltip,
                                  tooltip
                                  {
                                    margin-top: 2.5em;
                                    margin-left: 1em;
                                  }

                                  4) restart FF.

For me, it added a/b a 5mm offset rightward and downward.

And, if anyone else has trouble with the dropdown menus on forms I mentioned earlier, here’s my fix for that too:

                                  /* use 2em for default font, 1.7em for gtk-font-name=Sans 12. */
                                  #PopupAutoCompleteRichResult, #PopupSearchAutoComplete, #PopupAutoComplete
                                  {border: 1px solid #000 !important; margin-top: 1.7em !important}
