TOR, Ungoogled Chromium, LibreWolf, Firefox 87 (deb from SID running fine).

      Live stick alpha2.
running on fujitsu Esprimo Core 2 DUO saved from tip a couple of days ago.
Owner fitted unmatched memory modules and decided it was junk. Put in HDD and a DVD RW.
Nice machine for everday user if it proves reliable.

Dropped SR Ware Iron from my recommendations, it kept diverting my Metager search to Bing.
Complete removal, including all of the config) and reinstall not a cure.
Others complained in the forum about that behaviour.

Replaced with ungoogled chromium, no more bad behaviour observed. Up to date fast, stable
and no connection to googli needing an extra setting to block as was the case with iron..

Unfortunately not a 32 bit version available, Probably possible to compile for that usage but
more than my computer can comfortably manage for sure. Out of comfort zone too :-).

One more browser that doesn’t communicate with google and that should install on antiX 32-bit is ‘abrowser’ by the Trisquel distro. The .deb installs and runs perfectly on antiX 19.3 64-bit for me. It’s the default browser on my most recent antiX Libre respin. You can find it from the Trisquel package mirror if you like: https://archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/pool/main/f/firefox/

Currently the latest version of abrowser is 84.0.2, so the link for 64-bit would be https://archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/pool/main/f/firefox/abrowser_84.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.18.04.1+9.0trisquel77_amd64.deb, and the link for 32-bit would be https://archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/pool/main/f/firefox/abrowser_84.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.18.04.1+9.0trisquel77_i386.deb.

abrowser is similar to ungoogled chromium in the way that it strips some anti-privacy stuff out of Firefox. abrowser takes all the firefox extensions from the mozilla add-ons website, at least the ones I’ve tried.

abrowser will not install the widevine DRM, so Netflix is not possible.

There is already a sticky browser issues and tips thread As forks are not firefox but built from open source code
I would personally prefer not to bring them in direct association with the mozilla trademark browser.

We should not help mozillas lawyers to get a case for dcma takedown, something assumed to have happened to the
predecessor of at least one privacy orientated fork.

Funding for FF comes mainly through google getting all search terms passed to them.
Take a read through where the leadership came from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/leadership/
            and the finance report.

Having that revenue reduced due user privacy respecting forks and thus less money in the deep pockets of the management
will for sure not go down well with persons like the multi millionair CEO.

              Dear Sir,

On my laptop, I have changed time zone and the keyboard for testing.
              New time zone : Paris
              New keyboard : France
              Shutdown of my laptop
              Restart
Sudo apt update (nothing was updated).
My applications remain in English except Google Chrome, Chromium, Firefox.

              Best regards,
              Wallon

                Translated title: “.desktop” Shortcut Icons

I noticed that in the shortcut icon “claws-mail.desktop”, it has translations for several languages, but the translated texts are not displayed in the sub menu in the respective languages.

In tests I did with the root administrator powers, when I removed “Generic” from “GenericName”, keeping only “Name”, I saved the file and applied the command in the $ sudo desktop-menu –write-out-global terminal, the menu started to be displayed immediately with the correct translation for the language that is configured in antiX. In the tests I did, translations in Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish worked.

                My doubts are:

Do all programs packaged by the antiX community use “GenericName” or just “Name”?

If the tests I did are correct, antiX programs that have shortcut icons with “GenericName” instead of “Name [pt_BR]” do not display the translation due to this important detail.

Some shortcut icons in the “/usr/share/applications” folder that I analyzed:

                The shortcut icons that have “GenericName”: claws-mail.desktop, ceni.desktop, badwolf.desktop, google-chrome.desktop, gtkam.desktop, htop.desktop.

                Shortcut icons that have “Name[pt_BR]” and do not have “GenericName”: firefox.desktop, formatusb.desktop, gksu.desktop, add-key.desktop, antiXCC.desktop, desktop-defaults-follow.desktop.

Shortcut icons that have “Name[pt_BR]” and have “GenericName[pt_BR]”: gimp.desktop.

Observations: “gksu.desktop” is missing the Name[pt] language, so it does not display for PPC in the European Portuguese language. “Gtkam.desktop” does not have Name [pt] and Name[pt_BR], Name[es] and several other languages. Several icons in the “/usr/share/applications/antix” folder are incomplete or in English only.

How can I collaborate to help complement the shortcut icons packaged by the antiX community?

                (Original text in Brazilian Portuguese)

                ———-

                A minha dúvidas é:

                  2- Actualize o sistema

Games… Steam…

13- Se sentir a falta de notificações do sistema, instale o “dunst”, a partir do instalador de pacotes
Instalador de pacotes > “Misc” > dunst …

                  ****

                  P.

                    programs [..] finding Linux alternatives

                    here’s a starting point: https://alternativeto.net/
Their site search enables you to apply a filter (opensource only) (platform:linux)

If you care to mention the programs by name, folks can probably suggest equivalent alternative replacements.

Many thanks for the great link Skidoo, I’ve used it and manged to find an open source replacement for 2 of my programs 🙂 Just got the last one left and it’s the main program I use which is Mediamonkey, I need to find an open source alternative, I’ve had a brief dig around on google and there are many open source players out there so it more of a case of comparing, installing and giving them a good live testing

                    Hi The Lone Sniper,

Welcome to antiX Linux and the forum.

You have read these excellent tutorials created by @PPC:

Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie

                    and

When you start a topic or participate with a post, remember to check the option “Notify me of follow-up replies via email”.

I hope you can understand my words translated by the internet translator into your language.

                    marcelocripe

Hello marcelocripe, thank you for the very useful links (I’ve already got them bookmarked in firefox for reference purposes) Thank you for pointing my attention to the “Notify me of follow-up replies via email” option, I must of missed it and scrolled straight past it but I will make sure I tick it in future. Yes I can understand everything you have written in the word translator 🙂

                    Hi and welcome!
I have nothing to add to what was said in the previous post except this: if you want to run antiX with a more familiar interface, take a look at my thread over at https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/antix-transformation-pack-min-fluxbox-with-tint2-toolbar-antix-ft-10/

Almost any internet browser you can think of runs in antiX (most are available in out Packet Installer), for any other software, just ask around, except if it’s a really specific (like I want to run Photoshop in Linux), you’ll probably be pretty happy with the results…

                    P.

Thanks for the welcome PPC 🙂 Many thanks for pointing my attention at your thread I will check it out

                    Welcome aboard.

“They are not disabling “PWA”s (websites running as apps on mobile devices),
but SSBs (run a website in a web browser but in a seperate profile with full-screen mode, probably for desktops).”

From my perspective, a trend away from SSBs (single site browsers) would be happy news.
Desktop linux, it’s not a phone ~~ don’t want to see users forced/steered into installing a damned “app” in order to interact with a given website. Oooooh, it’s not justa website, it’s an “experience”?

Thank you all. I looked a bit into Palemoon and Waterfox. Most reviews kinda slammed them for secuirty flaw for being based on outdated ff. I do always take into consideration paid media reviews opinions with a grain of salt. Good to head user opinions. Lots of posts, hard to quote. I do very much agree with the posts about tor and firefox. As much as I’ve watched firefox opt out/pricacy choices change over the years; Tor, Whonix, and Tails, all collectively still live off at the least the base firefox code. I assume they privacy tweak scripts beyond my understanding, but their unofficial endorsement does give confidence to us less educated on the details.
A 2nd endorsement for Badwolf, I take into deeper consideration.

As far as OG hardware, I can keep maybe 8 tabs open on firefox with intel atom and 2G ram netbook, so it worked as expected there performance-wise.

With about config only on Trunk as someone mentioned? was that referring to android specific? I still have about config on ESR,regular, and trunk this week on debian, but I don’t look at phone much. …?

Probably a pointless opinion, but, my hardware can’t run Qubes yet. I do however love the concept. In present time, since I don’t really fully trust any browser, I just compartmentalize among most of them. If I use ff,fftrunk,chromium,tor,whonix,lynx,links2, etc randomly, clear cookies, fully remove, rotate, etc. None are good, but juggling can separate what I wish to separate from a corporate cloud… When 60% of my ads are not in my countries native langues, I consider that a small win.

To the comment about Huwawei ban, I offer a different opinion. In America, pyramid schemes are highly illegal. If you look at how the capitalist pyramid structure works, or the Catholic Empire for another example. Personally I felt pyramids were so harshly punished here worse than lesser crimes, is because they drew light to how our society is structured as a whole. On “the way we do things round here” lol, I’d assume the US banned Huawei because their intrusive android spying might point out our own google intrusive android spying. To me, China is dictatorship in the name of communism, same as the US is rotating dictatorship in the name of democracy. If it’s not Libre Source, then greed loves to spy.

                        Howdy Jessie.

I’m running 19.3 full x64 with Firefox up to date 78.6.1esr (64-bit). I was able to use Firefox to access my Google drive and download files etc. I don’t use it much, but I did download a file and had no problem. It shows up in the downloads list.

I installed PPC’s access_cloud-antix-version.sh script, made it executable, and ran it It configured my Google drive.

I ran it again and double clicked the Google Drive line. It opened SpaceFM (the file manager I have selected via Preferred applications) with an additional mount for my Google drive. I clicked it and all my Google drive files appeared in the SpaceFM pane, and there was nothing unusual that I could see. Interestingly, they were all files I had saved on my phone. So that means I’ve now found a more convenient way to get files off my phone. Thanks PPC.

Sorry, I really know nothing helpful about Gnome or Caja.

Anyway, I think I’ll add an icon for PPC’s script to my toolbar.

PS: Sorry I forgot to say I installed rclone and davfs2. At this point I’m not sure if I needed davfs2

I need to download some files from google drive and when I use the google interface nothing happens. I click download and there is an instant popup in the lower left, which disappears too fast. I look in Downloads and find nothing. I searched the entire ~ with find and still nothing. I try to right click on the image in Firefox hoping to e able to save as, but the only option is ‘add comment’. I changed firefox preference to always ask where to save and it still does not ask when I click download.

I encountered exactly same issue recently, using the default browser Firefox ESR (78.4.0, FWIW) shipped in antiX 19.3. And, because the file I tried to download happened to be an image file (.jpg etc), I managed to find a workaround WITHOUT needing to install or modify any software. By no means it would be a decent solution, but perhaps funny enough to share. 🙂

                            1. Just double-click your image so that it will be shown in Google Drive’s web interface.
                            2. Click the Print button at upper right corner. Now, your raw picture will be shown in the web page, with a confirm-to-print window pops up.
                            3. Click “Cancel” to dismiss the confirm-to-print pop-up, and then IMMEDIATELY (like, within a couple seconds) right-click your mouse at your raw picture so that a context-menu will pop up. Your RAW picture on the web page will be gone within seconds, but that context-menu will remain.
                            4. In that context-menu, choose “Save image as …”, and, Voilà! Now you have your picture downloaded. 🙂

Such method won’t work for .pdf files, but you might as well actually go ahead and print it into a local pdf file. If your file is a .docx, you can first open it in Google Docs and then its download feature work as expected. Haven’t tested more other file types. YMMV.

                            Regards,
                            Ray

It seems that it wont boot, be it because of the xorg (the “graphical server”) version or something else (like some machine specific configuration) that was left behind by your other computer.

You can still use it as a terminal based server, but if you have time and want to experiment, you could try a DVD with the ISO I built aimed at older systems that have lost some of the graphical support (antiX19-legacy-beta2).
(Try different booting options if normal boot doesn’t work)

By the way, a total memory of 176 MB RAM is pushing the limits. You may be able to get a graphical environment working, but don’t expect much of the system. You can forget browsing the web with firefox, but editing text should work properly.

If you want google drive to mount as if a directory, then use PPC’s tool: https://github.com/PPC-scripts/access_cloud

If you seem to have problems downloading from the browser, try first downloading something simple (right-click you avatar, open image in a new tab and right click and save the file). See if the file downloads or not (I think this could be related, as lgj100 mentions, to a mis-configuration of firefox, as it may be using a configuration from your home folder, that was set up with a different firefox version). Try with a different browser.

is there away to link to google drive as in gnome desktops where the drive will show in Caja? this is done in gnome online accounts in ubuntu.
                                  thank you.
