Hey Brian,

Congratulations on your retirement. I might be heading that way myself sooner than expected.

I like to use a client that syncs with google. I use the google stuff just for convenience especially with my phone and tablet and on my laptop I prefer a client just because I find web browsers are so heavy these days and hard on resources. I use chrome mainly since Firefox got real buggy a while back and I believe they have had some internal changes. I don’t pay much attention anymore.

For the most part the Google stuff just works and well for my needs. Just looking for the best option(for me) on the desktop/laptop.

Trout season opens tomorrow so you might see a little less of me.

Hello!

While I posted what I tought it was a permanent solution to screen tearing or flickering while scrolling in Google Chromium/Chrome, it seems that the problem was somewhat harder. Yes, creating the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf archive with the content I posted there solved the problem with Chromium/Chrome indeed. But after that, I installed Palemoon browser, and it was even worse: not just tearing, but some lines were permanently drawn on the borders of the page when scrolling up or down. At first I tought it must be a Palemoon problem, but after a while I tried to erase the 20-intel.conf archive and… the lines in said browser dissapeared, but the tearing/flickering is back in Chromium, and a little less, but present, in Firefox & Palemoon. So now I thing there is something wrong not with browsers, but with something related to my gpu drivers or else. So, I tried again with changing to new kernels (the two newer ones in stretch repos, 4.19 and 4.20 if I’m not wrong); nothing, so I turned back to first install stretch default, 4.9.160.

I own two identical notebooks. One of them, the one I’m using daily, has antiX 17.4 installed into HD (an eMMC, actually; a very low end machine, you know). The other, which my family is using, mostly, has the last (or a very recent at least) MX Linux version. The thing is, I don’t see this problem when using the MX Linux notebook; same hardware, so it must be a software trouble, I think. I tried inxi -b with both machines, and here’s the output for the antiX one:

Results were mostly the same for “graphics” output: same X.Org 1.19.2, modesetting… Only difference was Mesa version: on MX, it was 18.2.6. I don’t know if this is really a clue, but this is all I have. As I’m just a random user (I don’t know how to write code or anything) who loves Linux because of its stability, security, functionality, personalization, freedom…, when I’m in any trouble I just duckduckgo or google it and try to find a solution myself, but this time I had no luck, so that’s why I’m posting here.

[EDIT] I forgot to say that unabling GPU acceleration with the browser-in option solves the problem… But I’m not sure it solves the thing. If I can’t use my GPU, what do I have it for?)

Please tell me if you need any more details. Thank you for reading this, any help will be really appreciated.

So — you are recommending something that you don’t even use or you use something, but don’t even know what.
Your link is exactly the same that Anonymous (remember missTell?) posted already back in November.

And — under ‘security’ we obviously understand something else.

For me it was in a sense of: when an security update comes out today, I wanna have it today.
Not tomorrow, not after tomorrow and also not a couple of days later.
This you get only with Chrome and Firefox.

In a couple of weeks or months, Epic will catch up (main version is the same as Chromium it’s based on, subversion differs). πŸ˜‰
That said — if they’re still around at the given time. πŸ˜‰ Already second good laugh today. πŸ™‚

Most security holes are anyway found by Google research team and everybody is soon using Presto — Edge included.
Opera and Vivaldi are fine, but they are not better then Chrome in one way but definitely worse in another.
Opera has one feature that my seem promising — it includes VPN connection.
On the other side, they miss the most valuable stuff from Chrome.
Owned by Chinese is also not everybody’s piece of cake.
And — if I need VPN, I’m choosing my provider.
Microsoft’s Edge is soon ‘Edgium’…

P.S.
You forgot Pale Moon and ‘Yandexium’ on your list. πŸ˜‰

The statement below, (at least as written) is absolutely inaccurate.

There are countless Web browsers that are available and work just fine. For example, using either MX, antiX, or a slew of other Linux-based distributions, I can use either the released, Developer Edition, Alpha, Beta, or even Nightly builds of any Mozilla-based Web browser, including Firefox or Firefox-ESR, Seamonkey, Waterfox, etc.

The list is similarly long for Chrome-based Web browsers – Google Chrome in many variations, from the common released version to any number of unreleased test versions; same with Chromium, Flashpeak Slimjet, Vivaldi, Brave, zombrero, and many more.

Do you mean that only certain browsers are included by default, or that only certain browsers work on a particular system, particularly old 32-bit systems where the support for 32-bit images has sharply dwindled? If so, I can understand this, but receiving an Email message, without looking back to previous comments, I have no idea what you mean, so please clarify your intent and then I’ll understand better – regardless of what previous discussions may say.

What functionality and security features do Brave and Flashpeak Slimjet lack? Same with Waterfox, Vivaldi, and Opera?

@ masinick:

That’s the same link that was posted in #13576 from November 21, 2018 at 6:37 am.

Unfortunately, if you wanna use the net, you’re only choices are the choice between Chrome or Firefox.

I like Min and I like Epiphany (Internet, GnomeWeb), but they all, either are not working, or are missing some important features or are insecure.

enabled without real warning

FYI, agreeing to install WideVine EME (encrypted media extension)
similarly creates — without clear warning/disclaimer — an identical “forevermore” scenario.

The patent purpose of EME is to enable providers of DRM encumbered content to verify that a specific playback device is suitably licensed. On linux, it generates a durable fingerprint based on UUID of boot partition. On Windows, it generates a durable fingerprint based on serial number of the PC’s motherboard (which is read from hardware, fairly impossible to spoof).

The one-time (ever) user prompt does not provide an explanation beyond “To view this content, you need to”

Cookies (and clearing them) is now nearly moot.
Websites can embed a 1px (aka “invisible” aka “web bug”) widevine-encrypted item, thereby causing the web browser to transmit its durable fingerprint -based “key”. Zero benefit to the user, zero knowledge on the part of the user, huge boon to BigData tracking.

Mozilla:
we respect your privacy.”
“We defend your privacy”
Firefox exists to provide an alternative to BigBaddieGoogle… to preserve your privacy

let’s take a stroll…

startpage.com
websearch “firefox widevine install”
click “Images”

.
.

.
.

.

.
As you mentioned, most people don’t know, don’t notice…

Specific to WideVine, many who believe they know… have been tricked. They are operating under the “belief” which was instilled by Mozilla back when they brought the camel’s nose in under the tent by promising “it’s not a bad thing, it’s a NECESSARY thing, toward supporting the modern web. You can set it to AskToActivate…

Hi pgb,
hm, to avoid any misunderstandings.
There is a GUI-based app in antiX already
control-centre –>session –>screen resolution

What is the advantage of the other programs?

Laptop presentation mode is an indispensable convenience feature offered by a modern OS to people who have a use for it.

If I put “laptop presentation mode” in Google search field, on place 4 comes the best possible explanation I could imagine.

Presentation Mode is designed to help users of portable devices (e.g. laptops). When enabled, it applies advanced changes to the operating system’s configuration, so your computer stays awake, the screen saver can be disabled, the desktop background can be removed or changed to a specific image, and the sound volume can be set to a predefined value.

When you enable presentation mode, your device stays awake and system notifications are turned off. It is possible to turn off the screen saver, adjust the speaker volume, and change your desktop background image. Your settings are automatically saved and applied every time you start a presentation unless you change them manually.

That said, “the advantage of the other programs” is more then obvious.

Surely, you could change a couple of settings on a couple of different places one by one each time you’re giving a presentation, but that’s what’s called “the inconvenience” or “the disadvantage” of the ancient concepts.

The last one I added was the ‘eid’-one, managed by the belgian government, to support a chipcard reader plugin in firefox. But I’m not sure that triggered the problem.

I’m afraid I’m in deeper trouble now, and that could mean that all comparisons between my Antix15 and Antix17 setups are futile for the moment.

I experienced strange hangups with firefox and spacefm, and (sometimes) long waiting times at startup and shutdown (Startup: while configuring wlan0, shutdown: when unmounting some partitions). Then I found a folder /var/lib/systemd….

Does that mean I have broken my installation? If so, all comparisons with my older Antix15 are useless…

If systemd is present, can I recover? Or do I have to re-install?

I suspect Google to be the culprit. I installed the chromebrowser from a downloaded .deb package. Only later did I notice Chrome is also present in the Antix Package Installer. Is that safe? I kind of need Chrome to view protected video content from our national TV-network. Also, there is the question of Google Music Manager. Is that software also dangerous to install from Google’s .deb-packages? That program is the sole reason that I wanted to upgrade in the first place. If I can’t install it in Antix, I might as well stick with my Antix15 environment, which – for all other purposes – is fully satisfactory.

And since I mentioned the protected video content: in firefox I get a message that the Widevine plugin crashes. I had hoped that Antix17 would have remedied this situation, bun alas… Chrome on the other hand has no problems with video.

install gmtp. It does not come installed on the live session. Only systemd distro probably worked is they throw the kitchen sink into the iso which takes up gigs of iso space, then transfers those gigs onto your hard drive. Here is my Samsung Galaxy S7

Phones interfacing with Linux can be a PITA sometimes. I don’t use my file managers when it comes ro AntiX and phones. gMTP handles the heavy lifting for that. Of course You got give the the phones approval ( trust prompt) before getting my results.

Sometimes I drive a crooked road to get my mind straight.

Hi,
I have searched forum and I can’t find answer to my problem.

I am not able to open ads.google.com and adwords.com on my antix.
All I can see is:
Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at ads.google.com.

For sure it is my local problem.
Where I can search for solution?

What information about my system I should include so you can help me?

I had try to turn off fire wall but it did not help.

cheers

OK., this is my maybe complicated or wrong way to whitelist one speficic side.

If a side doesn’t open, because of the advert-block script, it will allways show me something like
eg
“Unable to connect
Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at http://www.googleadservices.com.”

Then I know it’s googleadservices.com

Opening geany with gksudo geany and using the search function, search in files
Search for: googleadservices.com
Folder : /etc
Clicking on search
Down in geany under notifications there are here now 4 rows which contain googleadservices.com
If you click on each of them the host file will be shown in geany with yellow arrow for the line you are seeking, and you can comment them out with #
Close and save.

After reopening the browser I can open the side. This at least works here until I don’t use any additional blocker.

I thought I had a thread here already. Searched for it using the the search box on the top r/h side of the forum page. But it looks like the search terms Chromebook, Acer, C710, c710. Brought me up nothing in results.

Anyways. Here are the specs

I put this away in storage after my install. I’ve been mostly on my motorcycle shop Desktop system and IBM T430 since then.

But, I am getting it ready for my trips this summer coming up and it is going to be my saddlebag laptop. So I made it current.

Did some touchpad editing after helping another chromebook user on MX forums on his AntiX install. Helping him helped me. Just changing 3 finger right click to 2 finger right click. When you 1st install AntiX . The touchpad default after install is 3 fingers for right click copy and paste.

Gotta give D.O. respects also for giving me ideas in that thread.

AntiX runs good on chromebooks to. If someone finds my thread I think I made already. I will merge it over here into hardware. πŸ™‚
