Hi,
I believe my speed is consistent with what my ISP delivers and my sysctl.conf file also has the dirty_bytes = 20000000 (and the two other settings mentioned with the same values [10 and 50]) as a default.
However, I use firefox, not google chrome, on this machine.
So, possibly this setting is harmless for not chrome browsers (or only a problem with chrome browsers on certain setups, since anticapitalista mentioned that he had no problems with speed with google-chrome, presumably with the same dirty_bytes setting?).

Whatever is set up by default in antiX works for me regardless of which browser I use. I see negligible speed performance difference on the typical pages that I use, and though some of the “lighter” browsers use less memory, only the truly minimal browsers that also have considerably less support for the latest technologies offer a LOT less memory use; the minimal browsers are mostly useful for browsing text and simple html with very minimal (if any) graphic content.

Dear Developers,
I installed antiX 21 Full on a Sandisk 3.2 usb stick on my old 2008 Asus laptop with 2 GB ram.
I removed the line vm.dirty_bytes by putting the # sign in front of it.
#vm.dirty_bytes = 20000000Now, Google Chrome also works very well for downloading in antiX 21. Look at my screenshot. I have a nice straight line for my 125 mbps download.
I’m going to tell you a secret.
I installed several Linux distributions and checked why other distributions worked well with Google Chrome download. Every time, the dirty_bytes was 0.
I don’t understand all these functions but it has a nasty influence on the speed of antiX.
As I have no answer from the developers, I stop testing.I’m happy to have found the cause of the slowness of Google Chrome on my 2 computers.
I’m also glad I’m back to antiX because the Debian distribution free or not free is very difficult to use. You always have to get out command lines and it doesn’t even always work. I understand the work that is done by the developers to help ordinary users.
Best regards,

I’m totally OK with discussing inxi here; I started this thread, so from my perspective, it’s a personal journal that I’ll allow a lot of general purpose stuff, as long as it doesn’t overwhelm my own purpose for this topic. The reality is that the smxi and inxi tools are the primary vehicles I use to journal and document whatever I’m doing, so in this author’s opinion, they are not only ON TOPIC, they are assisting my journal history, which I tie back to how I use antiX in relationship to a few other distributions; I’m delighted in the way this is going!
On that point, now that I have at least one of my system updated with a current tool, I can use our GUI tool and it provides a lot of up-to-date information:

I’m using a different piece of hardware again today, and it’s another one where at the present time I have ONLY antiX installed.
I hope to spend some time later today acquiring a newer version of the excellent h2 tool inxi. In the meantime, here is
what the inxi-gui version I have available says about the system I am using now:System: Kernel: 5.17.0-11.1-liquorix-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 10.2.1 parameters: audit=0 intel_pstate=disable hpet=disable BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-5.17.0-11.1-liquorix-amd64 root=UUID=aee72af0-ef89-4139-bcbe-a544c99b9c72 ro audit=0 intel_pstate=disable vga=895 quiet selinux=0 Desktop: IceWM 2.9.7 dm: N/A Distro: antiX-21-runit_x64-base Grup Yorum 30 October 2021 base: Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye) Machine: Type: Desktop System: Hewlett-Packard product: s5747c v: N/A serial: <filter> Chassis: type: 3 serial: N/A Mobo: PEGATRON model: 2A6C v: 5.00 serial: <filter> BIOS: American Megatrends v: 6.01 date: 09/29/2010 Battery: Message: No system battery data found. I do not see any issues regarding download speeds running antiX-21 installed (64bit) whether testing firefox-esr or google-chrome.
So far only @Wallon has reported this issue.
If other antiX-21 users can confirm one way or another, then we can take a look.
Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.
antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

@Wallon: If you are having that many problems with Chrome-based browsers, maybe it’s time to see which browsers DO work effectively for you.
I don’t see the problems you have, but I’ve managed to put a few config changes into Palemoon 31.0.0 and it behaves similarly to Firefox with a somewhat smaller memory footprint. With the config changes, most other things, particularly using this forum and Webmail (which comprises the bulk of my computing activity these days), work nicely there, and also in Firefox, though I have no problems using Google Chrome, Chromium, or Ungoogled-Chromium.
I hope you find success with another alternative.

Hi @Wallon,
Perhaps other members on the forum may have better suggestions. For me, I think the first thing I would try is to copy the ~/.config/google-chrome folder in the MX linux setup that has google-chrome working for you and copy to the antiX system that you have. (In any case, I would save that folder as a good backup because it has all your extensions and setup.) And then try to launch google-chrome and try it out. If it works, great.
If not, try a different browser in your antiX system, like firefox or librewolf. And then try to do the speedtest. If it works, then the problem is unique to google-chrome on that antiX system.
If trying other browsers produces a bad speedtest on this antiX system, then it may be your antiX system setup. In this case, I would back up important files and folders first. Then do a complete reinstall of antiX.
This is just my own opinion.

Hi @Wallon,
I cannot reproduce. On my machine, google-chrome-stable in antiX21 produces a flat curve using speedtest.net to produce 44.16 mbps download and 27.0 mpbs upload. Firefox in the same anti21 system using speedtest.net also produces a flat curve with 47.38 mpbs download and 26.96 mpbs upload.Using windows 10 on the same machine using speedtest.net I also get a flat curve with 50.86 mpbs download and 20.17 mpbs upload.
Perhaps it is something unique with your antiX21 setup.

I’m using my chromebook from 2015. I followed some online instructions, and reflashed the bios, so I could totally remove chrome. Now it runs antiX. (I bought it recently just to do this.)
It has a TINY (16 GB) emmc “ssd,” so I keep my installed apps to the essentials, and run from ram (all my antiXes are “frugal/live”). It’s a pretty good little (& light!) machine.

Stock Google Chrome comes in more efficiently than Firefox 100 without a doubt. Looks like Firefox consumes a larger amount of cache memory, presumably for faster site loads; it does seem to get in here quicker than either Palemoon or Google Chrome; otherwise, once here, all of them perform the same tasks and are relatively indistinguishable without doing a “deep dive” to see who they’re sending information to or what they are “saving”.
I’m not particularly concerned about those things; for those of you who are concerned, at least there are multiple alternatives to choose from, including Ungoogled Chromium.

Yup, Firefox 100 is using slightly more memory than Google Chrome was, currently 765 M / 3.59 G listed on Conky. I had Google Chrome Unstable taking up 757 M / 3.59 G, similar, but nominally less…
Palemoon is WAY more efficient, though it doesn’t contain EVERY feature the “big” browsers offer. 🙂--

BTW, I was using Google Chrome Unstable on antiX 21 a few moments ago and it was working well, but I exited, and came back with the recently updated Palemoon 31.0.0 and it consumes MORE than 100 MB LESS resources than an equivalent workload with Chrome Unstable; mind you, Chrome was working fine, but for simple browsing like this forum, Palemoon does the job just as well and with significantly fewer resources. I’ll check regular Google Chrome and Firefox just for comparison, but I think the others consume 75-100 MB more memory for similar workloads.

Older versions were not remotely controllable–Marionette or stuffed full with Telemetry and other sneaky ways to deceive
users while harvesting data together with cloudflare google apple and probably others I havent noticed yet.Brian wrote on banking: Login is secured by codes received by SMS to cell phone.
SMS TAN is now considered insecure by many banks due a lot of succesful attacks on comprimised windoze systems.
The hidden Modern Fox screenshot extension is used by scammers which is why I delete it on every update.I use Ing, to login with a browser a verified phone with special application is now required, then have to read 2 codes
from the computer screen.
Maybe so the bank can blame any scammed customer where others have to pay compensation.Maybe I can put a dik in the anchient 386 server when I get some time to spare. That device was built in USA weighs a ton,
and extremely high quality components so sad when it gathers more dust. Be intersting to see how well antiX runs on it.
Should be fine as previous OS was Debian. -
