Ok, I fixed the bugs and retested, and added in your WinGrid keys, as well as a couple custom keys that I like. FYI, I REALLY dislike the tiling keys as they just made a total mess of the screen, and even the cascade and arrange did poorly compared to the simplicity of the Wingrid, and to me those other window rearragement keys were more of a RISK than potential benefit, but that’s just my opinion. I think they should be there but commented out,

Try them and let me know what you think?

My antiX 17.x Testing/Buster installs are currently using IceWM 1.4.3.0~pre-20181030

Further testing on 2 systems (Thinkpad x61s laptop and NetVista x41 desktop) shows that most of the shortcuts work, but there’s still a few that don’t work:

        – the Ctrl-Alt-Keypad w/Numlock Off 1 2 3 4 6 7 8 9 fails to Move/Resize Window

        – Ctrl+Shift+c Cascade windows doesn’t seem to do anything

        – Ctrl+Alt+l lock screen

        – Ctrl+Alt+NumLock Mute Volume (worked on laptop with USB Numeric Keypad but failed on Regular Desktop Keyboard)

        – Ctrl+Alt+Keypad / Volume Down (fails on both)

        – Ctrl+Alt+Keypad * Volume Up (worked on laptop with USB Numeric Keypad but failed on Regular Desktop Keyboard)

        – Ctrl+Shift+t root terminal desktop-defaults-run -r -t

        – Ctrl+Shift+p root htop desktop-defaults-run -r -t -htop

        – Ctrl+Shift+f root filemanager desktop-defaults-run -r -fm

        – Ctrl+Shift+v KeySysTileVertical

        – Ctrl+Shift+h KeySysTileHorizonal

        – Ctrl+Shift+c KeySysCascade

        – Alt+Shift+F8 KeySysArrangeIcons

I think I went through every key combo shortcut in both the keys and preferences file in the files on both computers.

I have all the IceWM functions that I need working on my laptop keyboard as well as external keyboard. Hierax-ca can see if I met his needs as well. I would also be willing to help test this when a new version is in process. Here are the helpfile, keys, preferences, and wingrid-centerzoom.sh used:

skidoo, Here is the IceWM keyboard shortcuts test results. I only brought up the WinGrid because it was suggested to use it last time I was having problems with the supposedly built in IceWM functions to arrange the windows which my testing showed to not work. Thanks for your time and suggestions. All of the non-working options are commented out in all the other distros I tested (most recent release of each).

I installed Absolute Linux, Debian 9, and OpenSuse Leap 15, Mageia, Slackopup, and Scientific Linux, all with IceWM setup to try to find an IceWM desktop with keyboard shortcuts that work similar to antiX, and few have many keys redefined, none have the window tiling or cascade or window/workspace options for the keys, so I can’t tell if they are is an IceWM issues or not, other than to say all of them also occur on my Dell D620 laptop as well as my HP DV9000 series laptop, with and without external keyboard.

Here are the results of testing all the keys mapped. I wonder if I need to be using a special keyboard somehow for my HP DV9000 series laptop (17″ with separate numeric keypad built in):

              I found “VolumeDown” not working.
Fixed by inserting a space after the tailend minus sign

              key “Alt+Ctrl+KP_Divide” amixer -c 0 set Master 5- # lower volume

Noted: NumLock must be off for the “Set Volume” keybinds to work, but I found NumLock=On is set when I logged in to desktop session (dunno whether that’s the default behavior or something I’ve set).

key “Alt+Ctrl+KP_Add” amixer sset Master toggle # mute on/off

              Does not work.
Noted: Right-clicking the VolumeIcon tray icon }} Preferences }} HotKeys, mute is assigned to XF86AudioMute.
I don’t have a multimedia kb & have no idea which, if any, of the keys on this “generic 101-key keyboard” is mapped to XF86AudioMute.

The same VolumeIcon prefs would be recognized across WMs, right? Maybe those (VolumeIcon prefs) should/must be set to same keycombos specified in the “keys” config file for each of the WMs? Wait, the VolumeIcon audio hotkeys are not “checkmarked” by default, so would just be ignored?

BobC, I am TERRIBLE at using|memorizing proprietary (*cough*, custom) desktop session global kb shortcuts.
              right-click VolumeIcon, choose OpenMixer.
whyWHYwhy does pressing Ctrl+Shift_KP_Divide (with NumLock=Off) cause the window to close?
set NumLock=On and repeat. Oh, now that keybind causes alsamixer to invite changing “Select File”.
Test Ctrl+Shift_KP_Divide (with NumLock=Off, and again On) while leafpad window has focus. No effect.
alsamixer. Press F2, read help. Does it mention Ctrl+Shift_KP_Divide? Nope.
This tiny experiment reminds/reinforces my impression that “shortycuts” are too maddeningly inconsistent for me to wrestle with.

              ——————-

FWIW, in my iceWM key file, I found all entries other than wingrid and audio-related are outcommented.
I can’t recall whether that is/was the default.
Okay, uncommenting all the “suggested” and “example” entries to test them.
(here, I re-discover that iceWM lacks the ‘Reconfigure’ command of fluxbox, so must logout/login for changes to take effect after editing “keys” file) (instead, I cheated, restarted iceWM by using OtherDesktops}fluxbox ..then OtherDesktops}iceWM)

              Among the “Suggested”,
I attempt to entirely avoid “desktop-defaults-run”, preferring to launch a specific “best tool for the job” on a case-by-case basis, but for sake of testing…

Alt+F2 works (yah, I do frequently use that one, in fluxbox session)
next 2 in the list work, then “Ctrl+Shift+t”. Well, it tries to do SOMETHING (dunno what. I didn’t see a new process in htop afterward.)
The remainder of the “Suggested” entries still (I last tested these during antiX17 betatesting) do work.
No, I don’t agree, wouldn’t “suggest” a sysadmin enable these ~~ especially not “xkill” nor “Surprise! desktop-session-exit”.
              “Ctrl+Alt+a” desktop-defaults-run -a
^—- I’m also reminded that, in the absence of inline explanatory comments, user has no idea (g’head, enable it and find out?) what these are/do

The “example” entries (are accompanied by explanatory comments, yay!) are mostly redundant with the “suggested” entries. All of these still work, per my testing today.

I posted a list of all the shortcuts from keys and preferences with which works or not in the “improvements” thread.

So far no one has said its an issue with just my machines (I tried them on 2 different brand laptop keyboards and external USB standard keyboards on fresh 17.3.1 installs)

I do have a working set of keyboard shortcuts that provide nice functionality based on what keys do work

I can post that here for comment if you like.

                  does nothing - KeyWinArrangeN="Ctrl+Alt+KP_8"

Does nothing on my #keys on right side of keyboard, but they do work for numbers across the top row.
Just found that using on my iMac 5.1 aluminum keyboard that the sequence of
Command +Shift+KP8, etc, does move the active window in all directions,
The Command key on an iMac seems equivalent to Windows Key on that op sys.

Sounds like the problem. I’ll try and see if that will fix it later today.

                      Thanks much

PS: Yes, that did fix it. I will try the keyboard shortcuts today.

What would be the best key to assign a default desktop Keyboard shortcuts help screen to? The long term goal would be to display the shortcut on the Conky screen and use that same shortcut for all desktops in all languages, and if there was a GUI editor for it, possibly allow it to be edited from there as well. I think that was what skidoo was thinking towards and sounds good to me.

PSS: The scrolling problem is there in Geany but not Firefox where if you click on the scroll bar to move one page up or down, you might go 10 pages instead, and since there are no arrow buttons with this theme (not sure that is caused by theme,IIRC, Metal2 with Crux adds the arrows, but Crux is a sick Purple, so I would need to hand modify the color), you can’t just click and hold those to scroll at a reasonable pace, leaving the only way to do it with a click and drag on the center bar (which isn’t easy with some track pads) or by using the keyboard. Again, I have made no changes here.

Maybe you want to move this thread to Development? We are way out of the realm of “Announcements” at this point. I will be fine if you move it.

Here are the results of testing all the keys mapped. I wonder if I need to be using a special keyboard somehow for my HP DV9000 series laptop (17″ with separate numeric keypad built in):

Yes, I thought someone would ask that.

My view on that is that the best course of action is to review and remove unless deemed very important, which I think unlikely given that nobody has said anything until I tried each keystroke testing the shortcut list I was making from keys and preferences. On my main system, I commented everything out except those keys that I am expecting myself to use. Since the system I was testing on is I think 17.2 x64 full (another reason that should be in the conky), I really should do a default 17.3 x64 full install so that I know for sure everything is as expected, be it right or wrong, to test with. I will put in another post with the results. It is quite possible that I just don’t have the screen setup right for them to work in some cases given that I have never used them and don’t necessarily know exactly what they are expected to do.

I downloaded the IceMe code and will look at that. I believe your screen print is from IceSound or something like that, which I looked at before and was quite tricky. I need simplistic Python stuff to work on until I understand things like classes and how programs work when built around them. I need to start simple, fiddle and tweak with them, understand, and THEN complicate a bit more to where it eventually becomes normal and understandable…

PS: the WinGrid itself is actually very nice, but the choices for the keyboard shortcuts for it are not easily remembered, and maybe that’s why I never use it.

Thanks for explaining the use case(s) for changing away from the default display resolution.
Reminds me to mention that I re-discovered “xmag” (screen magnifier is installed on my antiX17full system. I can’t recall whether I installed that or it was preinstalled.

Somewhere on this forum, attached to one of my posts is an “iceWM keyboard shortcuts manager” GUI script. At the moment, I’m coming up empty trying to locate a copy of it. If I do, I’ll post another attachement.
Hmm, I had just carved out and unbugged the KB management pieces (and without localizations) in response to a forum request.
Maybe you’ll be interested in grabbing the whole suite (“IceMe” on sourceforge.net) and whipping it into shape for use in antiX
edit: as seen in my screencap, it is “IceWM Control Panel” aka “iceWMCP”. Later post in this topic I’ve pasted a link

                          .

                          .

In searching forum or duckduck go, try “icypee” (i think that’s the name I used for the script)
Also, check the puppylinux forum at murga-linux.com (they might have a similar iceWM manager GUI)

too tall for lower resolution displays

the default conky screen from it check what is missing from mine, add the most important without cluttering too much, and add the most important antiX default IceWM keyboard shortcuts to the bottom of it

reminder: multiple instances of conky can run concurrently

A separate conky displaying the default keyboard shortcuts could be accompanied by a new desktop menu item labeled
                            “show default keybinds (toggle)”

^—- Unless someone plans to make a whizmo script to detect which wm session is in effect, parse the …/keys file and dynamically populate the content displayed by the conky, it’s probably important to mention DEFAULT in the labeltext
                            “show default keybinds (toggle)”

This is actually a pic from my main system, but its close enough.

Conky – addded host name, antixversion, and icewm keyboard shortcuts in english.
Taskbar – IceWm start button (prefer a nice looking antiX one), add screenshot icon, 3 desktops with mini view, add monitors, and add calcurse on clock click

BTW, I see that the Metal2 theme is one of the few IceWM defaults.

#2 is another “already been fixed” item.

I will take the default conky screen from it check what is missing from mine, add the most important without cluttering too much, and add the most important antiX default IceWM keyboard shortcuts to the bottom of it from a separate file as I was suggesting to show what it would look like.

                                Screen resolution idea:
                                1. When X comes up if a saved setscreenresolution script for how to set it doesn’t exist, use unxrandr to generate a default setscreenresolution file, else run the generated setscreenresolution script. I’m guessing this could be in desktop-session before the individual desktop is brought up.
                                2. When someone goes to change the screen resolution, instead of running xrandr directly, run a script that runs xrandr, then afterwards, run unxrandr to a temp file and compare it with the default to see if they changed the screen setup, and if they did and want to make it the new settings the default, replace the previous setscreenresolution script with the temp file generated.

I do think there are some things which I would change that are within the scope of antiX devs to choose. I admit that I only really use IceWM with antiX.

Fluxbox looks fine, but feels weird to me. I know many like it, so I guess that’s why it’s also there.
JWM works fine but looks too cheap. Puppy Linux running JWM looks better.
Openbox is missing. It should be one of the main options for sure, IMO, if you want to significantly expand the user base.
I3 is missing, too. It is also highly rated by users, therefore in demand, but I don’t like tiling only WM’s.
BTW, I have tweaked my IceWM to the way I like it with 5 way tiling of windows on demand.

The biggest difference I see vs other distro’s where antiX seems behind is the choice of default background and conky layout. For the default background, a good idea might be to have a contest and poll to choose the next one. Not that I dislike the previous choices, its just that most people do at least initially judge the book by its cover, so you want the most attractive cover you can find…

Relative to IceWM (my ideas may or may not be applicable to the other desktops)
                                  1. Use a nicer “Menu” button, maybe an new or improved looking antiX icon button

                                  2. Add .desktop files, icons and menu entries for any always installed, often used default terminal programs like Midnight Commander as part of antiX packages

                                  3. Add the Screenshot, Browser, File Manager, and Terminal to the default toolbar, maybe even create or find a GUI option where normal users can put a .desktop entry into a folder that contains a .desktop file for each toolbar program available so they can maintain the toolbar program list easily

                                  4. Add icons for desktops 3 (and maybe 4) to the default toolbar

                                  5. Revise default IceWM setup to show current activity Wan, Lan, Memory, CPU status in the status area of the toolbar

                                  6. Revise default conky layout to add more antiX settings, more graphical status, top 5 programs cpu usage, maybe calendar, and add a list of the most often used Keyboard shortcuts (make these also easily available from the Help menu or Help key). Suggest using an interchangable ascii-text file built for each WM (by current language if possible) that copies into the file displayed by the conky when you change to a different desktop WM.

                                  7. Default scroll to a page at a time (that got fixed)

                                  8. Add Metal2 theme (I use a modified Crux with color changed from Purple to Blue, and wish those were there by default)

                                  9. Add hibernate option back

                                  10. Add Autostart applications manager so users can easily say what programs they want to come up automatically after the machine comes up

                                  11. Add Xscreensaver maybe with a limited number of screensavers. Please include Star Wars and Flying Toasters if you do 🙂

                                  12. Allow user to change default screen layout (ie arandr or whatever) and have it automatically be used if saved without any programming

And you can see that I have have few major gripes, mostly minor, and more like “it would be nicer if it had this”. That’s a good sign.
                                  Thanks

PS: I will try Legacy Ice on a default install to see if it provides any of the above
