Dears,
I’m running the latest and greatest AntiX with all packages up to date.
When closing the screen of my laptop (HP 2510p) and opening it again, my mouse pointer is gone. Keyboard and keyboard shortcuts still work without any issue.
Fiddling around with the mouse pointer settings does not force the pointer to reappear. Even logging off and on again does not bring the pointer back. Same thing when changing
Any hints what should check or change to fix this behaviour ?

Now back to keyboard shortcuts, what drives me nuts is when I install a system with weird shortcuts, although well documented what they are, I can’t figure out where the definitions are hiding so I can alter them to what I like. There seem to be many places where those can hide. What are these fools thinking when they make them, that for using their system we are going to change out “settled” ways? How dare they, and what is so hard about stating that “to edit shortcuts go to /etc/X11/kbdshcuts.70”. And what about console shortcuts that interfere with terminal shortcuts?
They’re not fouls and they don’t dare. They’re just common people (who happen to have specialized in programming), so they do what everybody else does – they act and react according to their own (many times unperceived) perceptions, which in the case are that computers are used in English, the language they use, themselves. They do the same (acting based on perceptions) when they use a lot of IT jargon, for instance, without realizing the difficulties it brings to non experts (because it is difficult for an expert to realize that, whatever the field concerned).
So, what I do is just asking once in while if this or that could be easily done. If the answer is yes, excellent, if it’s no, I just thank them for what they’ve already provided me with – superb SOes, in the cases of antix and MX.
And if you ask them where to find this or that in the system, I’m pretty sure somebody will come up with that info for you. At least in the MX forum, for sure. I’m new on this forum and I’ve got the impression there are less members of the dev team around here, so there might be some difference between the foruns, I don’t know yet.December 22, 2018 at 2:44 am #14462In reply to: Translating keyboard short cuts

Favorite color and most comfortable background are different things, and what is most popular by no means does it indicate a quality of being best or right. It is a choice. Sometimes psychological some times physiological. I’d never pick green or blue as my favorite colors, but the only BG I can tolerate for long is a hazy dark blue-green. I’d never paint my bike in such a color.
Two people may speak, read/write, the same language very well but may be coming from different backgrounds, culturally I mean, and they misunderstand each other, and end up in conflict because the way each uses this language is different. I had my run ins here with someone who used language that we both fully understand but was offensive. Computers only understand one language, with only two characters in it (0/I). What is on top of it only helps programmers. Keyboards also don’t understand language, only 0/I. By the time we get to read an english word in console there have been many layers of “translation” with something that is very logical but doesn’t understand english, it tries. The reverse with commands. English is just the established widely accepted common ground among developers, some of which have very poor skills in this language but end up collaborating and producing wonderful code.Having said all this, I get in a hell of a lot more fierce arguments in my native language than I do in English. It may be because I have lost the cultural connection with that language and I have grown intolerant of its use.
Now back to keyboard shortcuts, what drives me nuts is when I install a system with weird shortcuts, although well documented what they are, I can’t figure out where the definitions are hiding so I can alter them to what I like. Is that so?
And what about languages that use non-latin characteres, like Greek, Arabic, Jewish, Slav languages that use Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese and all the other Near or Far East languages that do not use the Latin alphabet?Yes, that is so.
And … all those others have to learn English and will have the same keyboard shortcuts as the rest of the world, as long as they use Latin 105-button keyboard. Don’t look at it as a simple shortcut but, as a universal computer language that belongs to computer usage and makes it easier to use, independent of the language one speaks. No matter which language all those users speak, they will always have an English speaking OS underneath. The users of all those languages will still have to unhinde hidden data on a Mac by entering: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
If their keyboard can’t type english, they’ll need additional keyboard, not only to learn a shortcut.
Also:
First, don’t mix the application shortcuts with OS shortcuts. OS is always English, applications are not.
Second, don’t mix up technically possible with common sense or, in your case, common nonsense.Technically it wouldn’t be hard to make it. Simply take the Debian code, change the “hardcoded” links and recompile — and you’re done.
From the matter of common sense viewpoint, you’d be producing a chaos because of an lazy idiot who should never be allowed to touch the computer.
(Just how hard it is to learn 10, 20 English words if somebody really thinks he needs them for the shortcuts understanding?)Isn’t it much easier for one person to learn that ‘Alt+H’ == ‘Ajuda’ (–> ‘Alt+A’), or rather ‘Socorro’ (–> ‘Alt+S’), then it would be for one person to learn that ‘Alt+H’ == ‘Alt+A’, or ‘Alt+B’, or ‘Alt+C’, or ‘Alt+E’, or ‘Alt+È’, or ‘Alt+F’, or ‘Alt+G’, or ‘Alt+I’, or ‘Alt+K’, or ‘Alt+L’, or ‘Alt+M’, or ‘Alt+P’, or ‘Alt+N’, ‘Alt+O’,or ‘Alt+R’, or ‘Alt+T’, or ‘Alt+U’, or ‘Alt+Y’, or ‘Alt+V’, or ‘Alt+W’, or …
And, we’re still talking about one single shortcut, not 10 or 20 or more.
It is like it is and it should stay like it is with a good reason. Some people (which could think though) were thinking about such things and that’s why we got: Usability, POLA …
What you would like to do is very much Trump-like — force a common nonsense over the world by introducing a language / keyboard dependent shortcuts.
Computers are not made for everybody but, for those willing (and capable) to learn.
Unfortunately, all the others are also allowed to use them.

However, translating ‘Alt+H’ as ‘Alt+A’, for instance, doesn’t have any effect in the shortcut itself, I believe. Am I right?
You are completely wrong (‘Alt+H’ would, for example, mark the complete text on one website).
Is that so?
And what about languages that use non-latin characteres, like Greek, Arabic, Jewish, Slav languages that use Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese and all the other Near or Far East languages that do not use the Latin alphabet?
Besides, I happened to be asking in the antix forum regarding the translation of antix apps. Most shortcuts are occupied
Have you ever compared this with this (or the equivalent in an other language)?
and computers are not made for everybody.
Really? missTell knows, missTell says?
You’d have to change all this, plus x-time more from one to another language and it still wouldn’t make any sense on many languages or you’d need the same shortcut more then once.
Have you happened to realize that in that Table several shortcuts vary from one column to the other?
Who can’t speak English should:
1. Learn English
2. Use cheat sheet
3. Stop using computer
(or stop using shortcuts)I know it sounds harsh and it may cause a debate but, that’s how it is, if someone likes it or not.
No matter on which corner or the edge of the round world you live, you must be able to speak English if you are to use a computer for more then open the web browser and go to You Tube. And … if we’re honest, you can’t really watch some local TV program if you can’t speak English — there’s always something on English around, even if you don’t realize it.I can’t be listening to (reading, in the case) Queen Victoria, but the text certainly sounds like Mr Trump or somebody else that feels entitled to rule the world.
You seem to know a lot of things, but you also seem not to know this one.- This reply was modified 4 years, 4 months ago by zeh.

keyboard shortcuts — shortcuts — keybinds — hotkeys
.Within your original post, you mentioned Portuguese. If that is your interest, I suggest checking out (boot, test drive) a distro which is Portuguese-centric… and note which (if any) of their installed applications are more fully translated ~~ to the extent that “Ajuta == Alt+A”. I expect you will find very few such examples, even in a Portuguese-centric distribution. Posting to ask in their forums “why not fully translated, including shortcut assignments?” will probably be the best place to ask.
Portugal:
https://www.caixamagica.pt/
https://batocera-linux.xorhub.com/
http://kxstudio.linuxaudio.org/
Brazil:
https://duzeru.org/
https://www.biglinux.com.br/
http://www.linuxfx.org/As explained by MissTell in post #2, and in my followup post, your premise “changing Alt+H to Alt+A … doesn’t have any effect in the shortcut itself”
is — for many, if not most programs — incorrect. If you (or a distro) chose Gnome desktop environment, and installed ONLY programs which utilize global shortcuts which are redefinable via gconf…
…you could set the default language to your choice, and populate the gconf shortcut assignments to achieve locale-specific, heuristically sensible shortcuts.
Still, within each program, you can expect to discover that some NON-global shortcut assignments cannot be redefined (translated).
Having identified those problematic cases, someone can obtain program source code and change (for instance) the hardcoded Alt+H to Alt+A
…which, of course, begs editing the documentation to match… then recompile / package / distribute the “our special edition” version of the program.Deepin Linux has done what I’ve described, above. Gnome base + “our special edition” (and renamed) versions of individual programs… and custom documentation for each of those programs. After all their effort, are localized shortcuts provided, plus locale-specific documentation to match? (I’m suggesting that it might be enlightening for you to test drive that O/S to find out how thorough / successful they have been in regard to achieving the goal you’ve described.)

Translating the kb shortcuts associated with some entries/strings sometimes makes the shortcut incongruent with the word/entry it refers to.
Let’s take ‘Help’ and its kb shortcut ‘Alt+H’, as an example. The translation of ‘Help’ into Portuguese is ‘Ajuda’, hence it doesn’t make much sense to keep the ‘Alt+H’ shortcut. I mean, it’s not easy for a non speaker of English to remember ‘tipless’ shortcuts. However, translating ‘Alt+H’ as ‘Alt+A’, for instance, doesn’t have any effect in the shortcut itself, I believe. Am I right? If so, is there any way for a translator to define ‘translated shortcuts’? Maybe something similar to the underlined letters in the menu entries, who can be changed in the translations?December 16, 2018 at 9:15 am #14284In reply to: "Debian" entry in Menu

I am posting this from antiX 17.2 using i3 as the window manager installed normally with some other programs recommended or suggested onto antiX-Full. It does work fine and the memory footprint is 136 mb per free and top. Arco had Xfce running underneath I think, hence the large footprint. The Dmenu does work, but the Alt Menus from Arco don’t work, because they are really from Xfce, I think. The mouse does work to move the splits, and Tabbed or Tiled windows both work. Sorely needed would be making the keyboard shortcuts hints visible, and making the conky, which is on top, currently in Tabbed mode, Configurably visible or behind. An alternate menu like Arco has would be real nice for when you don’t remember the name of the program you want to run. LOL, I don’t know how to exit…
Back on IceWM… Exiting i3 took me out of X-Windows back to the login instead of bringing up the desktop session exit window, probably a configuration issue. Probably the way to get a good easy menu would be to use one of the ones that is already installed on antiX by default, like Arco did with their Xfce menu.
After figuring it out, I would say i3 would be a good fit as another window manager to front end antiX as another desktop option, as would Openbox, and neither are space hogs. Looking at the download counts for versions of Linux with these window managers on other distros, I think they are the ones most likely being looked for by potential users looking for high performance out of older hardware or stellar performance out of the newer high end machines.
Something that really should be considered is an automatic display of keyboard shortcuts with or and a link to the user manual for the desktop that is active so that the unfamiliar users can try a different one and know what keys are available and have an easy way to go get help/info.

Myself, I try to use the same yardstick to measure with, and lean towards the ones that are simplest, provide details (showing why to some degree) and widely available on any Linux. That puts ps_mem.py and top and free (matched top totals) in the running for me, as far as how to come up with a number to compare.
As far as responsiveness, I haven’t seen many distro/desktops that have larger memory footprints that are caused by tuning for improved responsiveness, but you make a good point there, especially in this browser oriented era, where how responsive the browser is a large portion of what makes the system useful or not. I want snappy menus and desktop or file manager icons, and a quick browser, even with lots of tabs open. I want the ability to resize windows or groups of windows, or move windows easily at least with my mouse, and optimally also with the keyboard (and moved used keys shortcuts shown for easy memorization).
I tried i3 by loading Arco last night. It has a very pretty wallpaper, but Thunar comes up full screen, so you can’t see the keyboard shortcuts to run i3 until you close Thunar. I was lost the first time, but the 2nd time got a terminal open. The mouse was able to adjust the split between windows after I figured out how to open more apps. I didn’t see ways to use it for window move/iconify/maximize/rollup/down/close). That probably is normal for i3 it seems. You would expect it to be lightweight, but it was using over 400 mb (according to the conky), or 372 (according to top and free) with nothing running, and it doesn’t have snappy performance in Thunar or the Alternate menu. I then installed i3 on a clean antiX system. I got it to run fine, switching to it from Desktops on the menu, but couldn’t remember the keystrokes to work it and the mouse isn’t usable under antiX for normal desktop maintenance tasks, either. It is obvious that it is tricky to try to learn to do almost everything from the keyboard. I will go retest antiX i3 and see how it does if I can get it to open a terminal.
Oh well… One thing you mentioned that sounded like a great innovation was to use the available memory to preload the things you typically use to improve responsiveness. It sounds like a good idea that I should look into.
Edit: retried Arco i3 and got multiple windows working and resizing by moving the split, and memory usage from free and top. I found no bug type problems loading or running Arco i3, btw.

If you test it ‘live’ you can just reboot if you get lost. 🙂
Those tiling WMs are really more for people who have a good grounding in how things work. 😉
Lots of keyboard shortcuts, look online, you’ll find info to get you started, (& of course the man pages).

“I also wish it had increased playback speed”
BOBC: MPV does allow users to control playback speed. You can google for MPV keyboard shortcuts. In my keyboard pressing “Alt Gr” + “9” (wich usually prints a “)”) increases playback speed. “Alt Gr” + “8” decreases speed. Is there a chance something in your system is confliting with your keyboard use on MPV?
Also, like SamK said, once you download the youtube video file, you can open it with any media player you want (like VLC, and so on)May 20, 2018 at 3:20 am #10370Memberpbxxx
I would not say antiX is for advanced Linux users as you can count on control center to help doing a lot of annoying stuff.
I would say it is for advanced users, in the sense that it will overwhelm users who are new to Linux.
I say that thinking of people I know who are not techsavvy and don’t even know keyboard shortcuts in their respective, popular OS (Win 10 and macOS) and think it is like magic when I do sth. as easy as closing a window with Ctrl-W or they get scared when I open a terminal on their macOS to delete file that won’t delete with the bin. (Terminals are scary!)
Fur users like this, I would definitely point them to a distro like an Ubuntu LTS or, even better, Linux Mint. If they get a grip on it and want to delve deeper into it, then I would recommend something like MX Linux, and antiX is in my opinion a little more complex, but not much. For me, it fills a niche for people who are looking for sth. that works on old hardware or people who like a very slim, lightweigth distro. AntiX is great, but I would not recommend it for someone who has no experience with Linux whatsoever and is not techsavvy.
In that sense, antiX is imho for advanced users, ie you should have at least a little experience with Linux.

I got it working in English at least. Here is a crudely made video of the screen saver running with the wttr.in weather screen (that I had the problems getting the font right with) coming up in the sequence after about 20 seconds. The key to making that one work was to get the right font being used. I don’t know any languages other than English to be able to test if it works in other languages, but I got it working with a UTF-8 font. The IceWM keyboard shortcut help screens for keys and preferences come up after that, and automatically regenerate if you add or change the shortcuts. The screens and sequence are all configurable. In the real world I run it at a slower speed so I have time to read the screens.

Dears,
I’m running the latest and greatest AntiX with all packages up to date.
Maybe something similar to the underlined letters in the menu entries, who can be changed in the translations?
