SamK, There isn’t any threat or reservation. Xecure, PPC and I are just trying to help and trying to focus on things that are likely going to be acceptable. The point was to try improve the likelihood that newcomers would get successfully installed and running and make their first experience with antiX a good one. We are trying to help make forward progress on that is all.
Yes, I wasn’t suggesting a useless blurb screen, or a list of patches screen, and all the effort it would take to save the “Don’t show me again” seems silly, but its very sad to see people angry when they just needed to change the language, read a little, and make a few clicks. People that are experienced don’t need EZ buttons, but Normal people need to be able to find solutions for the simple problems like reading the screen or connecting to WiFi quickly, before they get lost and frustrated, or we end up reading a sour thread or review.
Here is the idea. It will cost next to nothing. We have 2 desktop Icons by default, Files and Help. Lets add 2 more to the Rox desktop that are oriented to helping the newcomers. As Manyroads says, he never uses desktop icons, but I bet Moddit’s kids would be happy to find them đ
Add Icon 1: Add an Icon to change the Language/Keyboard right there at the top corner of the desktop. It would be the first thing on the screen.
Add Icon 2: Add an Icon for Xecure’s EZ Setup. We will already have the HiDPI screen fixed and WiFi working in the startup. They should already have the language right. They probably don’t need a firewall. But they might need to Set the date and time. That needs to be done before Update, and before Install Apps (Package installer) or those have problems if the date/time is wrong. We could add PPC’s shortcuts menu off of a button and if they want more settings, there would be a button for the Control Centre. Xecure has some great customizer ideas on the other tabs, too. Maybe we start out with just what we can get working quickly, and in time we could add tabs, and maybe more for customizing IceWM, Fluxbox and JWM and make it easy for newcomers to make adjustments without needing to go edit the configuration files. Since it’s a desktop icon, the experienced users who know how to set things up don’t need to click this if they don’t want to, but the newcomers at least will see the rational steps in the sequence they are needed and find solutions for the most commonly requested adjustments.
Help!: The Help icon has so much good info, but its pretty technical for newcomers. It likely does provide the info, but with Dillo, they don’t see anything on the first page after clicking the links, and today most people are used to finding the better browsers and know how to work them. It could use a link to the Wiki, which is important if its going to get used and improved, but that is very minor. When they have a full version with Firefox, we could bring it up with that rather than Dillo, and it would give a much more up to date look and feel.
And if the answer is no, at least we won’t waste more time on the concept.

First thanks anticapitalista, “systemd-free and âmean and leanâ đ
I also agree that if bells and whistles are wanted there is enough choice available not far away, for some
desktops MX is a good place to be.Clarity on ICEWM Rox is good to have, that desktop makes the transition from win fairly painless. It is
also fast stable and light on ram. I am not trying to make antiX look like a windows clone, just move as far
as possible from the need to enter menu using task bar entrys. For many things keyboard shortcuts are more
efficient, getting that in to kids heads is like trying to chip concrete with a wooden pick. One recent idea is to find a way to add a user set number of most often used applications to the task bar
automaticaly, most used in the center. For Ice I would like to see standard number of desktops (comprimise)
4. Much nicer than too many windows stacked over each other.# The live-system (including frugal, remaster, snapshot etc) seems to be working ok.
Agree, one point is confusing users though. After a remaster, on next boot the selected option is not for the
remastred version. (on a fresh runit setup for sure) I read on DW a guy gave up after repeatedly doing a setup
due not understanding he needed to change the option. I have to admit it has happened to me while playing with
my runit stick that I ended up in the roundabout.
Be nice if after remaster that setup would boot without further user action.# We will always be systemd-free. Relief.
On one box that poettering drivel wrote near a terabyte of logfiles and made a system run out of disk space.
Never ever again if any other choice remains.@ Xecure Personaly I think a quick setup introduction would be a good idea. Even with previous linux experience moving to
antiX and getting setup is at times challenging. Biggest problem is wifi. Welcome to antix screen, or box pointing to quick
setup, control center, forum. Let users feel cared for then they are likely to stay. Please no promotion for facebook the more
any support attempts are splintered the less users they reach. Bad enough to have a paralell world at MX.More in the control center less in menu would be my direction. I have set a lot to hidden as overloaded.
Modernised control center optics would be nice, looks a bit clunky, if functionality is improved all the better.# We will ship with/promote our own (less known or even unknown) tools/apps over bigger and better known versions eg
droopy, 1-1-voice etc.“Promote” made me smile, I still keep on finding useful new scripts or applications hidden in the depths of the system.

I will create a new topic in the development section to recommend better usability.
Before closing the thread (and returning to the topic at hand, are the Copy & Paste questions understood?
Perhaps it might be best to open another topic if needed, perhaps entitled Questions about Copy and Paste. Thanks for your feedback.
Yes, I understood the explanation and drag & drop technique or keyboard shortcuts and I’m going to try to use SpaceFM. SpaceFm behaves exactly how I wanted. Space-icewm is now my default desktop.
Thank you.

I got the dual 4K video machine booting quite nicely using Xecures nice autoscale script which I ended up tweaking to just fix it but give you 10 seconds to override, and PPC nice connection helper script. Xecure is still working on the Welcome screen itself, and I’ve suggested we try his control Centre combined with my concept of a welcome or first steps tab that show the first other things most new users need to take care of, language/keyboard, wifi, firewall?, date and time, updates, package installer, install. That way people get used to using the control Centre and all the other tabs would be there too. We’d need to add a links/help/shortcuts tab where we could put those things, including PPCs shortcuts menu . That should help satisfy moddit and marcelos requests, and provide a smoother first experience for new users.

Guess wem all see this different. I used windows for work hours, a relief to get back to linux on which I created a lot
of tools for work improvement, meant redefining star VBA but worked well.Single click is no problem if you use the method for a couple of hours it becomes normal, double clicking drives me nuts.
I use rox almost all of the time, love the speed and effiency..
You can open 2 Rox windows and left click hold, drag itm to copy, within same window drag for example a
file to a folder, very like older win versions. Keyboard shortcuts for cut paste copy are same as win, or NT MS DOS.
NT is still the basis of win 10.November 11, 2020 at 7:49 pm #44805In reply to: PFO Back with older HP Laptop

LINKS2 just opens as a blank gray screen.
That is how it works. The first time you launch it, it tells you what button to use to navigate.
If you press F1 it will give you a small list of hotkeys.
Pressing Escape key will display the top menu. To go to a website, use the menu (File > Go to URL) and write the url there (for example antixlinux.com). Hit Enter and it will go to the URL. Links2 is mostly driven by keyboard shortcuts. You might want to run âapt âfix-broken installâ to correct these.
Before fixing the packages, I recommend you change the repo mirror.
Control centre > Maintenance > Repo Manager
In the first tab for antiX mirrors, I would select a mirror in Greece or Italy, as they are most reliable and faster for your location. Select one and click apply.
On the second tab, for Debian repos, use the button at the bottom “Select faster Debian repo for me”. Apply and close. To fix the packages, launch a terminal from the menu and do:
sudo apt update sudo apt -f install sudo apt upgradeThe first command is to update the packagelist so we are sure all packages to be downloaded are found (and to use the mirrors selected above).
The second command is to fix any broken packages.
The third command is optional, but recommended to get recent bugfixes. It may be a bit slow for a limited bandwidth, so you can ignore it.If you decide not to install all updates, at least install the package installer updates so you can get the most recent packages from there.
sudo apt install packageinstallerFrom there, try again to download Free Office from the program Package Installer (white bag-like icon on the toolbar or from Control Centre > System > Package Installer), or, as you already have it active in the repo lists, use the command:
sudo apt install softmaker-freeoffice-2018If the above works, let us know of any other problems and we will try to help.
If the above doesn’t work, let us know what other errors or problems you see and we will also try to help solve them.

PPC: Thank you for your kind welcome and suggestions. As I said before, I have some experience with Free Software (GNU/Linux mostly, but I have used some *BSD or Haiku too). For web browsing, Firefox is OK if I just open tabs one by one or just a few… Dillo and Netsurf are of course much less resource hungry, but you know the limitations those have. I think Palemoon is a better fit, opens almost anything and is lighter than Firefox. I have tried almost whatever browser you can name, including Badwolf. đ For YT, I usually stream vids with mpv/vlc, or use youtube-dl and play them offline (this is my prefered option for audio only). As for a mail client, my phone has me covered. đ And sure, the antiX apps ecosystem is just great, I just love the apps included, GUI or CLI. I prefer using CLI if I have a good alternative, and apps like youtube-dl, mocp, wordgrinder, links, htop… or plain POSIX utilities are staples in my daily work. I have both a Void Linux and a Kiss Linux installs in which I don’t even have a toolbar, dektop icons, launchers or even a file manager… I startx because I need to browse the web mostly, but I use plain CLI mostly, and lots of keyboard shortcuts to manage everything (Openbox+st in Void glibc, sowm+st in Void musl and Kiss Linux). antiX, as it is, is almost a “luxurious” distro for me! đ
Moddlt: Sure, one full Gb RAM should be a game changer in my Travelmate, but I can say I’m happy as it is… And we have three other machines at home, all of them cheap ones for sure, but more than powerful enough (two Celeron+4 Gb RAM laptops, onez four-core AMD with 8 Gb desktop) for my family needs (we don’t use them for gaming, for instance). Anyway, I’m overwhelmed for your kind offer, thank you very much! Sure someone out there has more need than I have of that RAM module, but I feel almost overwhelmed for your generosity, honestly thanks again! BTW, I’m from Mallorca, maybe you have heard about the place… đ
Thank you everybody, I hope I can contribute with my limited knowledge trying to help here, in this forum. I’m not too good with coding, sadly, but I can also offer my help as a translator (English to Spanish and/or Catalan) for any antiX project, and/or writting documentation or whatever.
Best wishes!

Hi,
I installed ZOOM .Deb from the Zoom download center, following the instructions of anticapitalista in August.
It seemed to work fine, but today when I was working with a presentation and using the screen share, the screen share controls are are gone if I start and then exit a slideshow.
Looked around on the internet, didn’t see anything about this as a bug.
I just upgraded to the current version of ZOOM, but that didn’t fix it.
Keyboard shortcuts to leave screenshare (Alt + S) or to show controls (Ctl + \) don’t work.
Appreciate any ideas.
I need to use this in a few days to teach a class.
Thanks.

The only problem occurs when I click the âiâ key on the physical keyboard or the virtual keyboard (onboard version 1.4.1-4) opens the Simple Scan 3.30.1.1 (Digitalização Simples in portuguese) program and the âiâ key does not work in Geany or in the internet browser .
So, You install the printer correctly, you install the hplip-gui package correctly and scanning works, but when you have the program running the “i” key is “kidnaped” by the “Simple Scan” program?
Change the shortkeys for the program. It may have assigned the “i” key to something. Hit the “Hamburger menu” icon in the top right (three horizontal lines), click “Keyboard Shortcuts” and see if you can see the “i” key there. This doesn’t happen to me in my tests, so maybe there is a different reason for this. See if changing the shortcuts helps. If it doesn’t, let us know and we will try to find a solution.

It took longer than expected, but I have built a .deb package for badwolf. Pick the one for your system:
64 bits (buster amd64)
https://filebin.net/g85oj5xgoa9vt3g432 bits (buster i386)
https://filebin.net/vaztctzbfg5hnrthHow to install:
– Easiest (but not the best in my opinion) – Download the .deb file for your system architecture. Right-click it, open with Gdebi, Install (not recommended, read more below).
– Best way (in my opinion) – Download the .deb file for your system architecture and move it to your home folder. Install using APT from terminal:
sudo apt install -f ~/badwolf_1.0.2-1_amd64.deb
or for 32 bits version:
sudo apt install -f ~/badwolf_1.0.2-1_i386.deb
Why I say this is the best way? No dependency problem, easy to uninstall later and it will add the corresponding entry for badwolf to the menu. When I have time later or tomorrow I will upload the source code with the debian configuration for anyone interested in building a proper .deb (and not an amateur build like mine)
Build your own .deb for badwolf: https://gitlab.com/nXecure/badwolf
Changes compared to the original badwolf source code:
– Configured for debian building (added /debian folder with instructions and info)
– Fixed a part of the original makefile code that made it impossible to build a .deb file
– Changed the paths of installation so it is more debian-likeDon’t expect much support from me. I just built it to learn how to build .deb packages from source code.
The browser installation takes about 70 MBs on disk (including dependencies).
Tested on 32 bits VM, fullscreen (1050p): (only counted extra RAM used. Base system tested uses: 150 MB live)
Measurements done with:watch sudo ps_mem.py
badwolf just opened – 60 MBs
1 tab (antixforum.com) – noJS|noIMG – 80 MBs
1 tab (antixforum.com) – noJS|IMG – 100 MBs
1 tab (antixforum.com) – JS|IMG – 130 MBs
2 tabs (antixforum.com, arstechnica.com) – noJS|IMG – 150 MBs
3 tabs (antixforum.com, arstechnica.com, reddit.com) – noJS|IMG – 200 MBsNotes:
Some websites (like reddit.com) don’t work properly with JS ON (at least for me on my testing machine).
Each time you open a new tab (‘+’ button on the top-right or using Control+T), it resets to noJS|IMG.
After some time, RAM accumulates. Closing and opening badwolf frees it.
On some websites, badwolf is a bit slow (stops entirely sometimes if JS is enabled, but only on that tab; close the problematic tab and continue browsing).
Cannot play audio or video. Don’t know how to solve this. In a BSD forum (https://www.unitedbsd.com/d/227-badwolf-web-browser) it is suggested to install gst-plugins, but I wasn’t able to solve this with them installed.
More info: read the badwolf man (man badwolf)About the previous discussion (what JS and IMG are), PPC already explained in the first post (incase someone hasn’t figured it out after reading masinick’s and Moddit’s interventions explaining it):
Using the Browser:
The badwolf opens almost instantly on my single core system.
The first tab is always âDownloadsâ, the second tab is where you can type the web page you want to go.
Please note: to the left of the address bar, there are two buttons âJSâ and âIMGâ that refer to âJavaScriptâ and âImagesâ. If the background of those buttons is blue then that option is activates.
Itâs handy not to load Images if you have limited band width or low internet speed.
You need to activate JavaScript for more elaborate sites, like Youtube and using webmailâŠ
To open a new tab press CTRL + T or click the button with the â+â sign on the top right.
There are more keyboard shortcuts, but, like DT noticed, the man page is broken and does not display the keysâŠ- This reply was modified 2 years, 8 months ago by Xecure. Reason: gitlab link

I had a few requests from friends who normally run Windows for a non-techie version. Its 64 bit and all up to date as of today. Code changes were kept to a minimum with changes in startup and user signon programs, but no major code changes other than installing Zim and the games via Synaptic.
The changes from x64-full are:
1. Added games
2. Zim HelpNotes (thanks to Skidoo’s help), both for IceWM Keyboard shortcuts, as well as application specific HelpNotes, including examples for Firefox and MC, with main Key legend in conky
3. IceWM configuration changes, 4 Workspaces, easier to read Theme, autohiding double height toolbar/taskbar, and most common programs already on the toolbar, including PPC’s Toolbar Icon manager
4. More friendly unplugdrive-new (with fewer question pop-ups)
5. Memory efficient Apt Updates setup (saves 44 mb when no updates are waiting)
6. Screen resolution auto pop-up first time
7. Connman auto pop-up if not connected
8. $HOME/bin folder created and added to path
9. SpaceFM is the default file manager, ROXFiler is also on the toolbar
10. Icons for Youtube video and music downloads, based on the URL in the clipboard
11. Modified Conky, nothing crazy, just a bit more info. It’s setup to be used with IceWM, and not intended or tested with the other window managers. They might work, but might have issues. I left the menu options there to change, just because it was easier than to try to remove things.
Obviously, this is 99.5% antiX and what I did was tweak, so thanks to anticapitalista and the Devs and others like PPC and Skidoo that made it possible. Anyone is welcome to use or implement any of my code or configuration tweaks, as the purpose is just to provide something easy for some friends. If anyone sees anything bad in it, just let me know.

Hi, I’m very new to Antix, so far i’m very impressed with the performances.
I’m trying to find a way to disable KeyWin, Keysys, Keysysworkspace while I’m using apps like Blender that makes heavy use of keyboard shortcuts, because the KeyWin, Keysys, Keysysworkspace, while the could be very handy, they make the use of certain software very slow.Is there a temporary solution, or even a defenitive one to do so?
Thanks

in forum SoftwareMemberPPC
I just found out about a very minimal browser, that’s both fast, runs on low resources, and still allows the user to view regular webpages!
It’s called Badwolf (I, probably like the user that first published about this browser over at the Mx forum, found out about it on the excellent DistroTube Youtube (DT) channel, that just reviewed it).Installation:
The browser is not packaged in deb format, so we have to be adventurous and (gaps!!!) compile it!First we need to install the dependencies. From the terminal type:
sudo apt install libsoup2.4-dev(this downloads 15,8 MB of files, that occupy 76,1 MB of disk space)
sudo apt install libwebkit2gtk-4.0-dev
(this downloads 13,4 MB of files, that occupy 55,7 MB of disk space)-To go https://hacktivis.me/projects/badwolf
– Download the latest file under the title “Releases” – “From source”: badwolf-x.X.X.tar.gz to your Downloads folder.
– Using your File Manager, click that file and extract it’s contents
– Go to the extracted folder and open your terminal there
– From your terminal, type:
make
[wait for the process to finish]
sudo make install
[enter your password, if prompted to, and wait for the process to finish]Now to run the browser, on the terminal (or Menu > Run) you can type:
badwolfThere’s also a .desktop file that you can use to make badwolf available from the menu…
cd ~/badwolf-1.0.0 sudo cp b*.desktop /usr/share/applications sudo desktop-menu --write-out-globalThat’s it, badwolf is on your menu!
Using the Browser:
The badwolf opens almost instantly on my single core system.
The first tab is always “Downloads”, the second tab is where you can type the web page you want to go.
Please note: to the left of the address bar, there are two buttons “JS” and “IMG” that refer to “JavaScript” and “Images”. If the background of those buttons is blue then that option is activates.

Hello, marcelocripe
Before the update made on 06/16-2020, the only crash that occurred was using the SpaceFM file manager, when I tried to click with the left mouse button and keeping it pressed to drag it to another directory of another window of my own the SpaceFM file manager, froze the screen and there were no mouse or keyboard responses, making it necessary to turn off the computer with the power button.
This may take a long time to figure out, as we would need to check different logs. We can try figuring this out later. Let us go to your most recent problems.
After the update made on 06/16-2020, the login screen menu changed its shape and appearance, as well as the background image changed to gray with the appearance of being a photo of some monument. Today when antiX 19.2 was started, all the desktop shortcuts were gone, and the default desktop or window manager (IceWM) was gone. In the Desktop / Switch between Desktop menu, IceWM is no longer available. The hidden folder located in /home/usuario/.icewm, remains with all the configuration files of the menus unchanged until my last modification on June 13, 2020.
You can see the recent packages updated in the file /var/log/apt/history.log, at the end of the file. If you haven’t installed/uninstalled anything after the update, you could also see it in terminal
cat /var/log/apt/history.log | tail
You could see what packages have been updated recently. In my case, for a recently created VB with antiX 19.2.1-base x64 bit, the most suspicious package that got updated recently is desktop-session-antix. The others don’t seem to be related to your problems.First, let us re-list all desktop options by reinstalling desktop-session-antix
sudo apt-get install --reinstall desktop-session-antix
Now, from the menu, you can restart your preferred desktop session navigating Menu > Desktops > Other Desktops > (preferred desktop)
antiX default desktop is Rox-IceWM, but maybe you were using Space-IceWM
Once you are back to a working icewm session, you can see if everything is working.
If you still cannot see any desktop icons, please change the wallpaper using wallpaper-antix (Control Centre > Choose Wallpaper). This should also fix icons/background not displaying.
Extra: Could you check if your login screen has also changed? (Log out, log in with your user and password). We could fix that latter if needed.Whenever you have time, report back if this restored your icewm session.

I report these flaws in order to collaborate with the development, improvement and growth of this important antiX 19.2 operating system.
I am grateful if anyone can help me restore IceWM and the existing settings before updating antiX.
I would like to take advantage of this post to express my sincere thanks to the creators and all the developers and maintainers of antiX.
I hope that this distribution will not be abandoned or discontinued, I wish long life, or rather, eternal life to antiX!
Like so many other Linux distributions that have left several users orphaned, and I believe, desperate without their favorite or main Linux Operating System.
If the developers are no longer able to continue working on antiX Linux, at any time, I ask the administrators of this forum / site to intercede for us, requesting all access to the site, repositories and other platforms so that the community can join even more to maintain live antiX.

Hi,
I installed ZOOM .Deb from the Zoom download center, following the instructions of anticapitalista in August.
Thanks.

Thanks
It’s handy not to load Images if you have limited band width or low internet speed.
You need to activate JavaScript for more elaborate sites, like Youtube and using webmail…
To open a new tab press CTRL + T or click the button with the “+” sign on the top right.
There are more keyboard shortcuts, but, like DT noticed, the man page is broken and does not display the keys…P.
