Does ceni’s “looks” put people off? Is there a way to dress it up with a yad-type “skin” — like live-remaster has?

        sudo updatedb
        locate Ceni
        ^—- capital C
You discover 2 files, both are perl scripts. (plaintext, can view in text editor)
Notice that one of ’em bears a filename “backend”. Yeah, the other is “the skin”, using ncurses.
By my cursory reckoning, about 43 separately handled yad dialogboxes would be required to encompass the same functionality.
        .
What do you anticipate would be the “value add” of some other skin? Superior info/help? If so, how about using a wrapper to launch Ceni ~~ the wrapper would launch a helpdoc (with embedded screenshots) into dillo immediately prior to presenting the Ceni UI.

an option offering Devuan Ceres with just jwm (perhaps)

FYI, the JWMKit author has already (June 2020) released a “Devuan Ceres with just jwm” ISO
(actually, I didn’t verify that it is based on Ceres)

2 peeps in this topic mentioning, again, the prospect of merging with Devuan.
Again, as-in, various prior topics I have belabored to explain why doing so is unappealing, IMO.

Devuan uses “amprolla”, most of its packages are hosted on // served from Debian repositories.
Devuan is not forthcoming, does not advertise this detail & many of the Devuan users are unaware.
How many packages are the Devuan devs actually packaging and maintaining?
(I knew the count as of about a year ago, researched while editing the nosystemd wiki)
How many in-house software projects, aside from refractasnapshot and refractainstaller, are the Devuan devs actually maintaining?

antiX kernel(s) include framebuffer module, and wide range of component firmware support.
        Devuan kernels?
        .
antiX stable repos share buildtime//runtime compatibility with Debian stable and, more importantly, with MX Linux stable.
A repeated topic of help requests at dev1galaxy forum: “Can I use MX repos?”
The consistently repeated answer: “dunno, don’t care, you get to keep the pieces when it breaks, don’t make a Frankendebian”
        .

Thank you both, Xecure and Moddlt. I see this is a welcoming community as well. 🙂

Xecure: I’m not really into GNU/Linux proselytism, mostly because I don’t like to argue and, anyway, I think it’s kind of hard to convince someone, no matter how wrong that someone may be, of something that he/she is not convinced already. 😉 But I have my own, pro-Free Software ideas and I try to make my point if I feel like it, and sure I agree with you. As an ecologically minded individual, and worried about the suffering caused by poverty, I think that anything that can help with one or the other issue has to be defended… And antiX, I believe, does its part in both: keeps old, cheap machines from being thrown to the garbage bin (ecology), and helps people with low income to keep using cheap hardware (may be useful to people in need, then). And does that in a nice, useful an fun to play with way. I mean, I’m really enjoying making my way through the endless menus, options and apps, GUI or CLI (BTW, the CLI “control center” is pure art!). I think it’s an excellent distro with a wonderful software selection. Funny thing is, there are lots of “legacy” software, unmantained maybe (ROX, Dillo and so on) which still work, for their use cases, extraordinarily well. So “don’t throw away that ‘legacy’ software yet!” XD

Moddlt: sure, I live in Europe too and I’m not close to rich myself, but the opposite… I’ll tell you something that happened to me and I think it’s related with something you say. A couple of years ago I went to a place, a “technology supermarket”, to buy a new laptop, which I needed for school and so on. So I choose a very cheap model with an Intel Celeron on it, not very performant but energy-saver and… did I already say cheap? When I told the salesperson I wanted that model, he started to complain with my choice, saying that I would have problems with that, it would be slow, it would even freeze, that I would come back for a change of laptop and so on. What he didn’t know was that I was going to install some GNU/Linux in it, so no matter how cheap the laptop was, it was going to perform admirably. As it really does. People are buying too expensive, state-of-the-art computers for doing what, check their social networks, watch some movies or TV shows and copy kitchen recipes? My cheap laptop is more than capable of that and then some. And by now I have installed GNU/Linux distros (I usually choose antiX or MX Linux, depending on the machine) to a lot of friends and related people who had old computers and/or problems with performance, computer viruses and so on. So I agree with you, we better help each other, I can’t say some rich people are helping or will be willing to help, but I won’t be sitting on the ground waiting for that kind of help in case I need it. The “help” from the antiX community, I have it today. 😉

          Greetings!

@Marceloripe: MX Linux is a younger antiX’s “brother”- it has many of the same features (live capabilities), a similar (although more powerful)- Package Manager, in short much of the same “backbone”- but Mx, instead of using window managers, to keep the system lighter, uses a Desktop Enviroment – XFCE (and now also offers a KDE version). Recently, the “flagship” “XFCE” MX version began offering, out of the box, a Window Manager- Fluxbox: the user starts MX, logs out, selects Fluxbox from the icon at the top of the screen, and logs back to MX, and instead of XFCE, sees a very customized Fluxbox Desktop. antiX also has a Fluxbox Desktop available, but MX’s is completly independent from it- it has very different default configs, a very short menu (MXFB does not have all available applications cathegories, but instead relies on Rofi and xfce4-appfinder as file launchers)- it has a costume dock, and a costume application to manage desktop icons (that are displayed using the ancient idesk application). The latest MX-Fluxbox version offers a new toolbar (Tint2) that makes it look and act much like a standard OS (like Windows 10, for example), with a start menu, and quick launch icons.
Using MX-Fluxbox, toggling off desktop icons, the dock, clipboard manager, automatic updater, etc, make MXFB 2.2 running on MX-Linux 18.3, 64 bit, run on as little as 220 Mb of RAM on my desktop computer (about 30 Mb are used by the Nvidea driver, so, It should run on about 190 MB of iddle RAM on a computer without NVIDEA driver installed).
I’m partial to antiX, but I also collaborated with MX and MXFB and it acts and feels much more like a novice Linux user would expect the System to run, and has the wonderful Mx-tools to help with many essential tasks.
During the last year, antiX changed it’s looks, looking now like a more polished OS, and offering many helper scripts that user can depend on to perform most essential tasks, specially on the defautl IcewM desktop, without needing to use the Terminal (unless they so desire).
There are many differences, between MX and antiX, like for example: MX’s default file manager, is Thunar, and its a bit heavier, but also has some features that lack in antiX’s Rox and SpaceFM. As an user of both OS my point of view is that, file manager wise, a correctly configured SpaceFM is a even match to Thunar ( you have to add “Bookmarks” and install a “Trash can”, if you miss having one)
On the Looks- both XFCE and MXFB with the Tint2 toolbar feel more “modern” than all of antiX’s desktop, but user experience is very near on XFCE and the ROX-ICEWM desktop- there are different ways to have desktop icons and toolbar icons, but you can do both on MX and antiX. In MX you search for apps from the menu, but antiX solves that with it’s costume application finder (app select – as power as searching on the menu, but also a bit slower on older systems)…
On features- hum… Out of the box, both Systems are very similar, but MX allows the user to boot using “systemd” as it’s init – that allows the user to run apps that depend on systemd- like Snaps. Also MX’s Package Installer has many more features- allows the user to search by app description, not only by app name, install and manage flatpacks, and also install some more apps that antiX’s.
MX has a different internet connection manager- I seldom see, on it’s forum, a user complaining about Wifi problems. True, that using Xecure’s forum posts (video and helper scripts) on Connman can solve some 90% of Wi-fi problems… But, if a user does not have internet working, there’s no way to find the solution on the forum, right?
Out of the box, MX comes pre-installed with everything but the kitchen sink – which is handy for most users, that don’t have to install anything.
antiX allows easy installation of most of the software that comes pre-installed with MX and is always lighter on system resources…

              P.

I received the Email notification today that:

                "------------------------------------------------------------------------
                The Debian Project https://www.debian.org/
                Updated Debian 10: 10.5 released press@debian.org
                August 1st, 2020 https://www.debian.org/News/2020/20200801
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Debian project is pleased to announce the fifth update of its stable
distribution Debian 10 (codename "buster"). This point release mainly
adds corrections for security issues, along with a few adjustments for
serious problems. Security advisories have already been published
separately and are referenced where available.

This point release also addresses Debian Security Advisory: DSA-4735-1
grub2 -- security update [1] which covers multiple CVE issues regarding
the GRUB2 UEFI SecureBoot 'BootHole' vulnerability [2].

                    1: https://www.debian.org/security/2020/dsa-4735
                    2: https://www.debian.org/security/2020-GRUB-UEFI-SecureBoot/

Please note that the point release does not constitute a new version of
Debian 10 but only updates some of the packages included. There is no
need to throw away old "buster" media. After installation, packages can
be upgraded to the current versions using an up-to-date Debian mirror.

Those who frequently install updates from security.debian.org won't have
to update many packages, and most such updates are included in the point
                release.

New installation images will be available soon at the regular locations.

Upgrading an existing installation to this revision can be achieved by
pointing the package management system at one of Debian's many HTTP
mirrors. A comprehensive list of mirrors is available at:

                https://www.debian.org/mirror/list

                Miscellaneous Bugfixes
                ----------------------

                    Skidoo,
Here is what came up, following attempted install of Calibre, via packageinstaller.
(NOTE: This was attempted twice: first, on Antix-17 LiveUSB, with no persistence setup… second, on installed Antix-17 system. Results were the same, either way.)

                    $ packageinstaller

                    running cmd: “cat /etc/debian_version | cut -f1 -d’.'”
                    running cmd: “dpkg -l packageinstaller| awk ‘NR==6 {print $3}'”
                    running cmd: “dpkg –get-selections | grep -v deinstall | cut -f1”
                    running cmd: “apt-get update”
                    running cmd: “x-terminal-emulator -T ‘Installing packages…’ -e apt-get install –reinstall calibre ”
                    running cmd: “\n”
                    running cmd: “dpkg –get-selections | grep -v deinstall | cut -f1”

Regarding what components of systemd might have been active…
Here is what came up (running a different Antix-17 LiveUSB, with backup of system on which I could not install apparmor). I don’t know the significance of most of these lines. But there are quite a few more than on your system.
[However, in my Antix17 system, where I did install apparmor, there are even more lines (mostly related to apparmor).]

                    $ locate systemd

Hallo BobC, Thanks for the input, maybe not clear enough that we are more than a household, Bit of a slowdown right now though, in winter I will be offering Linux and coffee in the kitchen, maybe in a local restaurant too.

AntiX , MX, Devuan, Manjaro are jewels in the Linux landscape but most of the general public or kids in schools know nothing about them. Yes I do know Manjaro has systemd which I personaly dislike, I like Manjaro though. Great devs too. Its user choice. Bring what you have, For a donation to installed distro will also consider coming to users home. We will install most anything except for pirated software.

One major reason: Im really sick of good hardware going to what here is called a recycling center. Actually they let nobody take anything away from that place, just destroy what is recieved.

Maybe the toolbar should have things everyone uses ALL the time.

Yes set up pretty much that way already, we called regular usage once in two weeks. That has agenda reasoning..

Maybe use the personal menu for things that you load for everyone that are less commonly used than the toolbar items but too much effort to find from the menu.

We really trimmed our menu down as far as shown items is concerned. Some starters just in the toolbar config only worked after adding to personal, it works now

Icons on the desktop is no, we have decided to keep it without clutter. Linking to important folders is easy enough from the taskbar. Anything else right click on the desktop. Soon my thinking is to assign some shortcuts, maybe like winkey W LO writer, Winkey C, for calc, Winkey M for claws. Thats more about kids learning that this is their system, apart from the core system they can safely change most anything. As long as they keep saving important data that is.

Really important stuff, internal drive, external drive and live stick usb storage which gives a plugin, boot, continue to work solution. One major reason why I promote and support AntiX.

Until I can figure out how to make a headless browser canary Conky will stay. I also found it really useful while stopping Firefox LTS and Quantum sending so much up to Mozilla and Google, maybe elswhere too. Silent updates are blocked. User.js no longer works in the LTS or downloaded quantum bundle. In both experiments were enabled, only place that is mentioned is mozilla zine or privacy notice. Big story, off topic, too big for this thread. For our friend Chrome or chromium is a far worse privacy nightmare. No way.

In case of interest this is one master switch in Firefox current:
                      datareporting.policy.dataSubmissionEnabled Change to disabled.
Crash reporting is dangerous, it saves and sends a memory dump. Can be triggered with default settings.
                      How Convenient.

Where do I go to change the menu entry Wünsche, gave up trying to find tahat.

Thanks for your good input. Moddit

                        Hi anticapitalista,

I tried the 19b2 on my old P-III/1Ghz/512MbRAM machine. I had a challenge getting it to boot since this machine doesn’t boot from USB. But I managed to figure it out using Plop. When I tried using the DVD to boot I kept getting a lot of I/O errors. Eventually it just hung up and I had to power down. When I used the USB it worked.

I don’t know if it is a bug, but when I first got the Live desktop up and running I looked at the menu (the default Rox-IceWM) and the Applications menu had only one entry for Synaptic. All the other entries for that menu were missing. I selected “Update Menu” and it fixed it. The CC worked fine and the terminal. Only had that one glitch.

I’ve used Package Manager to install SeaMonkey. It works fine. I tested SMTube, it works fine. All-in-all I think this version is better OOTB for this machine than was version 17. I’ll be testing some more but so far so good on this ancient kit!

                        Thank you,
                        Seaken64

                          @DaveW

“There are a lot of conflicting online reviews regarding the relative effectiveness of various anti-virus programs.”

Yup — and it’s perfectly logical, if you think about it.

You have to understand it as a ‘snapshot’ — the ‘momentary view’.

There are too many variables in game but, also some facts, when you’re measuring over time.

One and the same AV Program is once better, once worse but, after 20 years, one will show up as a clear “reliability winner over time”.

And, some others (ClamAV, F-Prot …) will show as a “reliability loosers over time”.

                          P.S.
Some are claiming, that there are a couple of thousands of new viruses per day.
I didn’t count it myself but, that seems very realistic to me.

Modern malware transforms itself upon each successful infection and changing only 1 bit of code gives a new checksum (== new malware; without AV signatures).
Now count the difference between 98, 99 or 99,5 % detection rate and then, tell me how useful is AV-Software with detection rates of 40 or 20 %. 😉

                          @manyroads

Thanks for the great link in #25195 (The 6 Best Free Linux Antivirus Programs), which brings us back to my post #25036 (my original answer to OP).

Comodo, ClamAV and F-Prot are not working, Chkrootkit and Rootkit Hunter being rootkit hunters and not fully-fledged AV programs.

At the bottom (paid) we get ESET (good), F-Secure (so-so), Web (useless) and Avast (so-so).

I expected something new … something like: but, it’ll not run on ‘junkputers’, or: it needs at least 1.2 GB RAM (for the ‘naked desktop’, right after the start), or maybe: that review is a crap — the Sophos Screenshot is still showing the old version 8, since the version 9 DOESN’T have any GUI, or something … as expected. 😉

                          P.S.
“I tried sophos and it only took a few minutes before I threw into the bit bucket…”
“Don’t believe everything you think.” 😉

                          @dgh

Than let’s compare your ‘junkputer’ with my computers. 😉

                          We’ll simply make 1:1 install.

You can show me how good that great Pentium II with 256 MB RAM will compare running 10 ~ 20 VM’s simultaneously; you can explain to the support people that it’s their shi**y policy that doesn’t fit your utopic freedom bill, when they tell you: “Our graphic cards are certified to run those CAD applications only on RHEL, SuSe and Ubuntu”, you can show me …

How long something operates, interests nobody. The customers are paying you to get the job done. At the end, it has to work properly. They don’t care why it doesn’t work. And they don’t care why you didn’t test it on a modern HW, such as what they use. BTW. No big surprise if it still works. More primitive the technology (simpler, biger structures…), longer life expectancy, just as with any other piece of technique ever produced. Some antique crank-phone will also live longer than your smartphone. 😉

On the other side, one computer is a sum of many parts and it’s indisputable that many parts are ageing and overall reliability is sinking over time or … if I have a contract with a deadline and rely on working computer, and if I borrow your “ancient treasure”, can you guarantee me, that it’ll be working until the end of the project? You see, my brand new one will probably not break, if it breaks, it’ll be repaired or replaced in the next 24 hours. Might be unimportant for watching YouTube but, there’s work and ‘work’.

And yes, I imply that SERIOUS work can’t be done with such old junk.

Let’s write something simple, a simple, responsive website (as example) …

You can write the code on anything … 25 year old Pentium will do and any text editor.

You MUST use the most recent version of Google Chrome because of it’s ‘developers tools and so, you might already get in trouble with 32-bit Chrome.

Once some code was written, you need to test it too — it’s supposed to work on all MODERN HW … Edge (Windows), Safari (Mac), Chrome, Firefox … Android & iOS.

So, you need to have at least one Mac, not older than a couple of years (or you’ll not get the latest upgrades), one Windows running on 10, and at least a half a dozen of Smartphones (yes, the top models too, because of their exotic screens, and some average-user models, since they make the majority).

And no, you can’t afford not doing it that way — Google Chrome can emulate the screens of other devices but, it’s not showing exactly the same as the original device.
One form working on Chrome and Firefox, might not always work in Safari or … many, many other small things might go wrong.

If you don’t do it that way, you’ll never find out if your website works or not.

My old Symbian mobile still works fine. Shall I use it for testing? 😉
                          I mean … instead of XS Max and S10? 🙂 🙂 🙂
                          Keep dreaming …

                          Trolls like you can’t …

… ignore the reality just because it doesn’t suit their ideology or “freedom dreams”, or can they? 😉

                          P.S.
Or … you’d rather tell me a tale about “32-bit lean and mean, alive and kickin'”?
(See screenshot … and that’s not the only example.)

InVirtualBox I keep a basic version of my System. That one does not have this issue either.
So it is caused by additional packages.

If I run ‘# apt install -d libsystemd0’ the result is:

                            # apt install -d libsystemd0

If I do not find a simple solution, my strategy will be:
                            – Wait a week or two. Maybe the issue will be solved by upgraded packages.
                            – If not, I shall perform ‘# apt full-upgrade’ and then reinstall the removed packages.

You post mentions antiX Full on 2 kits…
yet the inxi output shows “antiX-17_386-base

The LiveUSB doesn’t work on the celeron kit, so I ran the “inxi” command from the installed (base) system. See below the output from LiveUSB on one of the kits that it works:

                              $ inxi -Fxz

AntiX 17.4 (full) LiveUSB worked on two kits, but it doesn’t work on this celeron one (see below). After loading, the cursor seems dead, and I only can use the combo <Alt + PrtSc + type “reisub”> to reboot. Adding the line “needs_root_rights=yes“ to /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config didn’t help.

                                $ inxi -Fxz

by default, the live-USB system contains the “disable=lx” boot code, which prevents certain apps from starting. IIRC, cupsd is one of those apps.

^—– yes, and that (disable=lx by default) has tripped me up occassionally

                                  for reference:
On a live system, you can review the list (legend?) of disable= codes and associated services
                                  sudo cat /live/etc/init.d/live-disable-services

Can also review the list online https://gitlab.com/antiX-Linux/Live-initrd-1/blob/master/etc/init.d/live-disable-services
(the exact items listed are subject to change, across releases)

LEAN_SERVICES ( these are disabled when bootline specifies disable=l )
(added for clarity after proofreading: that’s a lowercase “L”, above)
