Bobc, I’m tinkering with repurposing the code from one of my other projects to serve as a “filepicker for packup/injection” GUI. I’m a bit stymied in choosing a name, and a scope, b/c the app’s framework was intended to serve as a multipurpose tool. As a working title, I was tempted to call it “Bob’s Items-of-Interest Thing”… or “thingamabob” as a shorthand moniker. (Heh heh)

Day to day, as you recognize a file or group of files or entire directory that you would like to “inject”… you would add an entry for it within thingamabob. Later, when ready to “packup for injection”, you would SelectAll or select some but not all entries & click a button to autogenerate a *.tgz file containing those items. The app would warn you (and would reject) any files|paths which match a blacklisted pattern ~~ in other words, it won’t allow you to accidentally attempt overwriting any (/proc/*, /run/*, et cetera) critical files on the target system.

Your usage described atop this topic mentioned “injecting/customizing a stock distribution”. For me, that’s such an infrequent task that I’m compelled to target a broader scope of usage. Also, I’m somewhat reluctant to FULLY automate the injection operation; as often as not, I would want to diff a given file pair rather than blindly overwriting the targeted file. With that in mind, I intend to have thingamabob pack (presumably on a known-good-working system) the *.tgz but leave it up to me to: 1) ensure the desired target device is attached, and 2) copy the *.tgz into place in my choice of Live-USB-Storage/username/ directory or base directory of the liveboot, or wherever. Later, when a copy of thingamabob is launched during livesession, on-demand we would have the opportunity to unpack the tgz in order to achieve an update ~~ or, a given run might be intended to extract a tgz which was created right on the same live system while in a known-good state, in order to achieve a “rollback”. Although remastering already proves quick/painless ability to “rollback”, an archived (manually renamed and timesstamped) series of saved linuxfs and/or rootfs files consumes considerable storage space. The thingamabob (re)injection could provide a complementary, lightweight, type of rollback. strikeout = Thinking aloud. TMI, too much info.

The repurposed code for this app is pygtk (python2.7 + gtk2). I probably lack the chops and/or time-n-patience to rewrite it as “python3 + shinyNewerGUItoolkit”. I’ve pared teats-on-a-bull features from a framework I’ve used for various bespoke apps and have stuffed code from various modules into a single python script. Its datastore is a plaintext flatfile ~~ for better and/or worse, no database engine required.

I welcome your (BobC) feedback regarding “packup” functionality; your feedback would help steer the “design decisions”.
The listview widget provides “click on column headers to sort-by-column” functionality.
Ability to sort has been sorely absent when tweaking my include/exclude lists which are peppered with inline notes.

The datastore can include columns which aren’t necessarily (or not always) displayed, and I’m planning to add hidden-by-default columns for DateAdded and DateModified. That metadata, if sortable, would certainly help jog my recollection of what I was doing/thinking at or near a given time (in case I’m rushed and skip the step of typing a description/rationale note).

(not evident in the screencap) right-clicking the list raises an Add/Edit popup containing data entry fields. Another “vector” I would hope to use, day to day, in building the list is a spaceFM custom command (send this pathstring to thingamabob). For an already listed exact pathname, this would trigger an Edit dialog; otherwise an Add dialog bearing a pre-populated Name(pathstring) field. At that point, we have opportunity to edit the pathstring (to create, for instance, an rsync globbed “include” pattern which targets /this/path/*.txt for migration vs only one exact/specific file).

One of the fields is a multi-line freeform notes field. This is (has been, can be) a handy place to keep notes regarding “what does this file do? which package placed this file, or references this file… or did I place it manually? What manpage or webpage(s) were helpful toward understanding the syntax used in this config file?” Also, when editing a config file, in addition to creating a .bak copy, I’ve been inclined to jot a note-to-self mentioning (or pasting in) any config lines I’ve altered. In a FileNotes capacity, thingamabob would enable me to pack-n-go take my notes with me. NO, I don’t care “whatif the same annotated file doesn’t exist on another system”. If I spent an hour researching resolve.conf and DNS in/outs and created a note, the note’s content will probably still be useful (and searchable).

spaceFM both provides ability to assign (DesignMode) custom context menu actions, AND it broadcasts to a socket ~~ announces the pwd pathstring each time the path within the currently focused tab changes. Now we’re cookin’ with gas! Thingamabob could run, minimized to tray, listening to that spaceFM socket… (optionally) popping up and alerting “Hey, we gots notes for one or more files in this directory! Wanna see ’em?”

The datastore will include an enabled/disabled column. By default, each item (ultimately, each is a rsync inclusion pattern) would be set enabled; toggleable via the Edit popup for an individual item or (TBD) by using a hotkey to toggle the status of the currently focused row. The (TBD, not yet prototyped) bottom pane of the GUI will expose a SelectAll/DeselectAll button, along with various other command buttons. Which and whatall commands? Hopefully you can help me decide whatall.

Kicking the tires, I’ve considered the prospect of adding columns like “est. filesize” (calculated WHEN? when added? each time the program runs? just prior to an xtra.tgz being populated?) and/or “category” and/or “keyword”… but, really, I wouldn’t have the patience to consistently fill-in all columns for each item record. These optional details can just be typed (or not) into the freeform notes field (will still be searchable/filterable).

      Multi-purpose?
(don’t put the cart in front of the horse, eh)
Contrary to the mantra “do one small thing and do it well”, thingamabob could accept drag-drop from browser urlbar and (also) serve as a browser-agnostic bookmark manager. Its “packup routine” can easily filter/ignore any web urls. By leaving the file:// scheme prefix after dragging to add an InterestingItem (scenario, its a local *.html helpdoc) and jotting a note, its row represents “just a uri+searchable note”. By removing the prefix and leaving only /filepath/to/helpdoc.html, it becomes a slated-for-packup InterestingItem. A bottom pane button could expose a “ShowAll||ShowOnly /*” toggle.

install gmtp. It does not come installed on the live session. Only systemd distro probably worked is they throw the kitchen sink into the iso which takes up gigs of iso space, then transfers those gigs onto your hard drive. Here is my Samsung Galaxy S7

          I use airdroid when I don’t have a cable.
          My install

                Anyways. Here are the specs

This was installed using John Lewis SeaBios. The whole thread with my involvement is over here

I put this away in storage after my install. I’ve been mostly on my motorcycle shop Desktop system and IBM T430 since then.

But, I am getting it ready for my trips this summer coming up and it is going to be my saddlebag laptop. So I made it current.

Did some touchpad editing after helping another chromebook user on MX forums on his AntiX install. Helping him helped me. Just changing 3 finger right click to 2 finger right click. When you 1st install AntiX . The touchpad default after install is 3 fingers for right click copy and paste.

Gotta give D.O. respects also for giving me ideas in that thread.

AntiX runs good on chromebooks to. If someone finds my thread I think I made already. I will merge it over here into hardware. 🙂

                    Hi-

Through research, trial and error, I was able to properly configure the lightdm files to auto-login on the fresh install. Even though it worked before, I had edited the wrong file of the two, first. It is now a very good install of antiX17 Xfce.

As far as the old installation goes, it has been successfully resolved. No more errors that I could find. When I realized that the only way I would have removed anything, if I had, would have been only in synaptic. Went back to see if desktop-defaults-rox-antix was there and uninstalled. Yes it was uninstalled. Should have checked this first, instead of going to the websites on the sources list and attempting to install through terminal with my limited experience. This fixed it totally. Lesson learned – log big changes even if giving it your last ditch effort, because it may not be… Never remembered among the many things I tried, specifically uninstalling that package. Afterwards, looking for the directory and did not make the association.

Dave was correct right from the beginning – “My guess is that the package desktop-defaults-rox-antix got removed somehow as it is what contains the paneltoggle.sh script.”

In reference to rokytnji’s first post reply regarding “locate systemd”, I have monitored this on the fresh installs to see where it starts making entries. It appears to have files compiled already and then gets maybe activated with xscreensaver and redshift installs.

How do I ascertain whether I have invoked systemd or not? It certainly appears as though that is what is going on, but I don’t understand what the entries mean.

The following is the wiki procedure for using systemd in MX which I have not done:

                    ——————–

                    https://mxlinux.org/wiki/system/systemd

                    Basic steps:

                    1.in root terminal: apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
                    reboot
                    2. when the GRUB screen comes up, click on Advanced options…, then arrow down and select the systemd version.
                    3. F10 to boot
                    4. in Step 6, the purge of those packages will take Network Manager with it, and you may not have internet access afterwards. If using a wired connection, that will likely continue. But wireless will be lost, so either connect beforehand an ethernet cable if possible, or install another network application. For example, in root terminal: apt-get install wicd-gtk.
                    6. still in root terminal: apt-get purge systemd-shim sysvinit
                    7. launch wicd to restore network connection if it has been lost.
                    8. reinstall removed packages in root terminal: apt-get install policykit-1-gnome hplip gvfs gvfs-backends gvfs-fuse live-usb-maker-gui grub-customizer mx-apps gufw network-manager network-manager-gnome network-manager-openconnect
                    9. still in root terminal: apt-get purge wicd-gtk
                    10.reboot

Probably someone of you knows Slax (https://www.slax.org), a one man distribution built by the same developer of Linux Live Kit (https://www.linux-live.org/) set of scripts.

With these scripts the initrfs file of any distribution with aufs kernel support (formerly Slax were based on Slackware; now it is based on Debian) is rebuilt from scratch, adding persistence and modularity of squashfs live filesystem. A similar feature is available in another (too extremely) small distribution, SliTaz (http://www.slitaz.org/), which merges many gz archives in one live filesystem on startup.

I think that apply Linux Live Kit directly to antiX should be a waste, because antiX init already contains persistence and many others initialization cheatcodes not availble in Slax.

I guess if should be feasible to modify init in a not so much revolutionary way so that antiX could have a modular livefs.

Why I love this modularity? Because on boot I could select which parts of linuxfs to load.
For example linuxfs could be splitted in:
                      01_linuxfs_core
                      01_linuxfs_core_i586
                      02_linuxfs_wifi
                      03_linuxfs_icewm
                      03_linuxfs_xfce
                      04_linux_rescue

With boot cheatcodes we could select in which way to start, completely ignoring what is not needed in that context:
                      01_linuxfs_core (base text mode filesystem)
01_linuxfs_core_i586 + 03_linuxfs_jwm (base text mode filesystem for 586 non pae cpus + xorg and jwm)
01_linuxfs_core + 02_linuxfs_wifi (base text mode filesystem + wifi firmwares and ceni)
01_linuxfs_core + 03_linuxfs_icewm (base text mode filesystem + xorg and icewm)
                      01_linuxfs_core + 02_linuxfs_wifi + 03_linuxfs_icewm (base text mode filesystem + wifi firmwares and ceni + icewm)

In this way loading on old system could be faster, selecting only needed modules, on the same base there will be the possibility to load different desktops, different drivers, different softwares (rescue mode, office mode, multimedia mode, …)

Probably this idea is out of date, due to high speed of modern machines and USB drive sizes, but I guess if it is so difficult to implement it.

Well. I finally broke my AntiX 32 bit 14rc? install on my Emachine 3507 after I got internet going on it again. That is another story.

So later on. I will be making and installing a either 32 bit or 64 bit usb AntiX 17 Full pendrive to get it going again.

I will see what you are reporting on on my older emachine kit. I have the stock panel internal media readers of the front of my 3507. I have a XD card camera also. No CF cards though.
But I move slowly and surely and methodically. I used to work converting anolog to plc controls on manufacturing machines in a industrial environment back when I punched a time clock. I was a avionics crew chief on CH-53’s Helicopters during certain years of my life also.

But that has nothing to do with how I roll now or do things. I just poke and hope and adapt and overcome. Learn as I go.

Long story short. My AntiX 14 install dist-upgrade with jessie repos finished with a error code. I did a apt-get -f install and a apt-get dist-upgrade and nothing showed being wrong. I looked through the update/uprade readout and found the error message. Replaced a text file in /etc while renaming the original .old. So I might have broke it. Slim no longer logs me in. I could probably fix it with a live session and delete my previous thought out fix and see what happens at slim login again. But I have been procrastinating anyways. So I’ll just move saved stuff I wanna keep to the other internal ide hardrive in the 3507. Then upgrade I guess to AntiX 17.

I don’t have but a couple gig of ram and a single core p4 processor on that 3507. So 32 bit will suffice even though I can run 64 bit if I wish. Decisions, decisions?
Google-Chrome sits lower on my preferences/druthers list than Chromium.

Edit. Damn, The wind here locally is killer today.

This is rescued from the defunct antiX forum for the benefit of new users who cannot access that old forum and others who might not have seen the original topic. It deals with the misconceptions of a user about the effects of using zram on his old, resource constrained kit.

These are reasonable questions that I have seen asked by others when first thinking of using zram. You went on to answer your own questions when you went on to say

Presumably your view extends to the use of compressed files like zip or tgz or 7z files using up some disk space that could be used for other files or even allocating a swap partition means there is less overall disk space available.

This is understandable speculation. Try it for yourself then decide. I have never noticed the effect you describe even on the least powerful kit.

Re-read the original linked post Tips for Improving Performance on Ancient Kit
its basic thrust is about ways to optimise performance on ancient kit. Often such kit has a low spec. Trying to use that kit in the same way you might use modern high spec kit is a fruitless exercise. So if you intend to use zram to achieve that be prepared for a disappointment. The post covers a range of ideas, any one of which may not produce a big gain. The right combination of them (which might include the use of zram) is much more likely to produce worthwhile results. One of the ways to obtain the most noticeable improvements is to choose appropriate apps and use them in a sensible way. If you want to use any form of swap space to compensate for a lack of physical RAM in old kit in order to employ demanding modern apps you are again likely to be disappointed. You will get much more performance from your old system by slightly modifying the way you perform your daily tasks and using other lightweight apps to do them. By giving up a small amount of convenience it is possible to obtain large gains.

On old resource limited kit, trying to view zram in isolation is not helpful. It is more beneficial to look at it in the context of your overall system which in essence means the capability of your hardware, the apps you intend to use, and the way you use them.

I’m not advocating in favour or against the use of zram. It is your system and in the end you will make your own choice. When building a system I use guidelines and a form of flowchart for swap space that I prepared some years back. I never published them because swap space is one of those contentious areas where people tend to aggressively defend their own preferences. All I will say is they have served me well and whenever I use zram (often in conjunction with a disk based swap space) I am happy with the outcome.

That’s OK, as I said previously I’m not trying to convince you or anyone else, though your comment has a tang of having done little before making such an observation.

                          A few thoughts off-the-top-of-my-head

                          • It seems unlikely that zram would be merged into the Linux kernel if there was no benefit to it
                          • Running in RAM is inherently faster than running from disk; that includes swap
                          • Using antiX in live nomadic mode on modern highly spec’d kit that you do not administrate and thereby cannot be certain a disk based swap area is available or accessible
                          • Potentially extending the life of a USB stick running antiX in live mode when a swap space is wanted on the stick

                          Some quotes from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zram

                          wikipedia:

zram was merged into the Linux kernel mainline in kernel version 3.14…
                          […]
Since using zram is an alternative way to provide swapping on RAM, zram allows Linux to make a better use of RAM when swapping/paging is required, especially on older computers with less RAM installed.
                          […]
Google uses zram in Chrome OS since 2013[7] and in Android since its version 4.4.[8] Lubuntu also started using zram in its version 13.10.[9] As of December 2012,[needs update?] Ubuntu has considered enabling zram by default on computers with small amounts of installed RAM
