      Look at the Chromebook though.

Google pit it in the schools and created a hit, enough so that Microsoft has tried multiple times to break back in with limited success.

Google, gave away many thousands of devices here in Germany, ever thought why, Total controll, google is a daugter of alphabet which
was a CIA venture. The kids using those devices have no privacy wghatsoever, same goes for there teachers.

During my time as a parents rep I had to fight against introduction of ipads, the teachers were offered a mac book pro plus a free ipad
every year for pushing through i pad classes.

google operation was more of a secret but involved a lot of invitations to teachers and a huge number of incentives. Google and Apple should
be barred from educational institutions in EU. They are part of the US ambition for total world domination..

Ya gotta sell something prepackaged. Dell and a few others have done it with a tiny bit of success but you also have to put it where people can find it; that wasn’t done very well.

Concede the desktop; there’s many’bigger fish’ to dry.

Linux has big server wins and great access to mobile communication. Those are arguably more important and useful; look at the next trends and be there too.

          Hi everybody.

I decided to use Abiword to make my documents. It was a mistake.

Keep as I remember when I used it during the time I had PUPPY Linux installed.

Hanging, unexpected closures, and was astonished something that had not happened to me, satured by my RAM and CPU.

Now I’ll try WPS, I’ll see how it goes. Yes, I know that my team does not have enough power, but that’s why I had chosen Freeoffice at the time for its compatibility with the Microsoft suite as its compatibility with my computer.

I already tell you how it is WPS.

Hi folks, I’ve just installed AntiX21 on my 3.0 UBS using as usual rufus-3.17p or LinuxLive USB Creator 2.9.4.
In opposite to 19.4 I cannot boot it on my company laptop due to Secure boot message on the inital screen. I cannot turn off secure boot as it is a locked company laptop. Version 19.4 boots perfectly in toram mode with persistence on. Is it an intended change or you are working on it? Best Regards Pylades

antiX-21 Live/USB is using Debian’s signed efi-GRUB and efi-shim. efi-shim is signed by Microsoft and controls secure boot handling, it passes the secure-boot state enabled in UEFI-firmware to efi-GRUB and locksdown any load of un-signed kernels and modules.
In order to boot with antiX21 with having SecuBoot enabled within UEFI: two options.

              * Option 1: Install Debian’s signed kernel followed by live-kernel updater, to make Debian’s kernel available at LiveBoot.

              * Option 2: “Tell” shim to disable secureboot-validation to allow load of unsigned kernels and modules, this would keep SecureBoot enabled in UEFI.

For option 2, you would somehow first need to boot with a LiveUSB which has already a signed kernel, e.g. with MX21. When booted you can turn off validation in shim this way:
              sudo apt update
              sudo apt install mokutil
              sudo mokutil --disable-validation
enter 2 times a simple “input password” (like “12345678”), which is needed by MokManager.
              Now reboot.
Mokmanager asks for the input password, now use arrow-keys to select “change secure boot validation/state”
You can now boot with antiX12 and unsigned kernels.

At least that’s the way, I manged to boot antiX with having SecureBoot enabled.

Are you able to get google docs working with a reasonable degree of responsiveness?

I just tested Google Docs- it’s “workable” using PaleMoon, but seems more “responsive” in SeaMonkey- in both browsers I tested opening a previous created simple .docx file and editing the text- typing as fast as I could, letters would appear almost instantly in the document, and I’m a fast typer (the only way that I got a delay was when I started just dragging quickly my fingers across the keyboard, typing geberish).
(Note: on my tests there’s a slight delay if you, for example, have text formatted to be centered or to the right or to the left- maybe about half a second for the text to auto adjust on screen and the character you typed to appear)
For using this on-line office suites I would recommend a device with at least 1gb of RAM, because just opening a document can use more that 512mb of RAM (less than 100mb for antiX and the rest for the browser and the web app)

I would still advise using LibreOffice, but, if you really have to, test any on-line web office suit- at least Microsoft’s and Google’s word processors are perfectly usable in my 32 bits device, specially under SeaMonkey…

                P.

Edit: for some unfortunate reasons I’ve been using that 32bits laptop a lot recently, and I have to say that I barely notice any difference between using LO Writer and navigating the Web, most of the time (my main desktop is a quad core with 4Gb of RAM and a SSD drive)- to be perfectly honest, the only delay I get is when I’m opening any program, the web browser and LibreOffice take some seconds to load on the 32bits device (5-10 seconds) and open almost instantly on the desktop. Once the app is already running, I barely notice any difference. This really means that I can (and do) use a laptop from 2004 with antiX faster than many users with low end/mid range Windows 10 devices.

I had to use a PC with Windows 10 for months, at work- it took longer to boot, longer to turn off, longer to open the browser-Google Chrome- and longer to open the spreadsheet-Excel- (for the first time, I guess after that both programs open faster because they got cashed) than performing equivalent tasks in my 32bits antiX laptop.

Long story short: long ago I gave my parents my old laptop- it was a very sturdy HP Pavilion, with a desktop size keyboard and a nice 16:9 screen. But it is a 32 bits single core, non pae (or so I think) that was born with 512mb of RAM and now has 1024mb. It came with Windows XP, that’s how old it is. At the time I gave it way, I tested the fasted distros I knew- antiX, lubuntu and Bodhi. My test was- opening a movie trailer in youtube, on all the distros- the smoother the play, the most useful the distro would be. Bodhi won, and got installed. Now I decided to update it to antiX 19.4 (to get an idea of how 21 will run on it). Bodhi is light, but antiX runs on less of 60mb of idle ram (in fluxbox-min desktop).
I wanted to make the best use possible of this still 100% working and beautiful machine. This is how I achieved it:

-Internet browsing: I kept firefox-esr, but it runs slow. I tried badwolf (it works fine when not using JS); Palemoon and Iceweasel. I prefer Palemoon (it even allows streaming youtube at 480p) but Iceweasel has better compatibility with more complex web sites- it even runs MS Office on-line (so, yes, you can run, via web browser, the latest MS Office, if you need to on a machine that would be old enough to vote if it was a person)
-Streaming youtube: smplayer, set to play videos in MPV at 360p
-Office Work: the default LibreOffice works great. If you need to, you can use Google and Microsoft on-line office tools.
-Media player: mpv tries its best to play HD video on this old beast, but it can’t sync video and audio, CPU keeps peaking at 100% (no wonder there). I found something that could play full HD video in an extremely smooth way (and I mean, really, really smooth): I installed “xine” media player and it does wonders- it plays the the Dune .mov full HD trailer without any noticeable loss of video speed, even with the CPU maxing out at 100%- sometimes going old school is the best way to solve problems.
-For pdfs/audio/viewing pictures- I kept the current antiX defaults (probably deadbeef would work too, for audio)
-If I wanted to read e-books, I would probably go with Calibre.

For all you folks with Window XP era computers, there you go, as long as you have at least 1 gig of RAM, you can still use the modern web, watch dvd’s and even hd video files, listen to music, work on documents, etc… You can do with half of that RAM, but browsing the modern web gets a bit more difficult…

                      P.

                        Hello,
Meanwhile I’ve managed to replace all the »black« strings by an alternative, within script, language files and readme document. Was a bit fiddly to trace down all of them, and if you notice an occurrence I’ve missed, please let me know. I have chosen »blocklist«, which anticapitalista and some others have mentioned above. So no problem here.

This replacement leads to translation-info Ver 0.8

New in this version (besides of the wording):
                        – command line help message.

So there are some strings to translate again on transifex. (sorry, I really hope this will be for last time)

Btw, interesting finding: Even when Google writes something like:

                        GOOGLE developer documentation style guide

This doesn’t prevent them from asking me about 100 times again and again whether I’d mean »blacklisted« while automatically translating the modified language files. It caused 100 error messages… Would wish they had a butten »No to all«. Seems they haven’t read their own guide themselves. And in some languages which came back in translation I noticed, they actually translated it to an equivalent of »blacklist«, not »blocklist« as the original reads now. The translation of »black« was clearly distinguishable. So much for that.
Since I’m not a developer, please forgive me for not reading permanently all the microsoft and google style guides for developers. I speak as I am born to speak, until somebody makes me aware an expression commonly used could hurt somebody else nowadays. Then I’ll take care of it, and this doesn’t need any discussion. Thank you very much, @Wallon , for drawing my attention to this blunder.

Updated .mo files for use in Ver 0.8 will come at gitlab as soon as the strings on transifex are translated, I’m going to bulk upload them this time.

So long, have a nice Sunday

We have agreed to use alternative names for lists; Google and Microsoft, two large companies, have cited a number of viable alternatives; we can choose from them or add our own; we have quite a few examples and alternatives listed in this thread that seems reasonable, but it’s not an exhaustive list; there are other synonyms available as well.

                              Hello to all,

I apologise if I have offended anyone.
I did not mean to create a controversy and set the forum on fire.
                              Why did I do that?
In Belgium and in other countries in Europe, there are important debates about what words to use or not to use on the internet.
I agree with the messages on this thread but things are changing and in our subconscious we don’t pay attention anymore.
I just want to inform the community that there are codes of conduct that have been defined for advertising agencies on the internet or in large companies in the IT field.
I have two examples of codes of conduct that will surprise you. I myself was very surprised because I wasn’t paying attention to my vocabulary.

Please, I don’t want any more controversy on this thread. This subject is really too sensitive (touchy).
The antiX community may or may not follow these codes of conduct.

                              GOOGLE developer documentation style guide

                              https://developers.google.com/style/word-list#blacklist

                              blacklist, black list, black-list
Don't use blacklist, whitelist, and graylist. Instead, use more precise terms that are appropriate for your domain.
For the noun blacklist, consider using a replacement such as denylist, excludelist, or blocklist.
For the noun whitelist, consider using a replacement such as allowlist, trustlist, or safelist.
For the noun graylist (greylist), consider using a replacement such as provisional list.
In all of these cases, consider that there might not actually be a list involved. When replacing problematic terms, be sure to be technically accurate for the specific context.
For the verb forms of these words, a simple word-for-word replacement is typically not the best solution. Instead, replace verbs such as blacklisted with phrases that accurately convey the relevant action. For example:
Recommended: To deny requests from an IP address, add it to the dos.yaml file.
Not recommended: To denylist an IP address, add it to the dos.yaml file.
Don't use: To blacklist an IP address, add it to the dos.yaml file.
If the command or code that you're documenting uses one of these words, then use these words only in direct reference to the code items (formatted as code), and make it clear what you're referring to.
Recommended: Add a user to the allowlist (whitelist) by entering the following: whitelist adduser EMAIL_ADDRESS.
Not recommended: Add a user to the whitelist by entering the following: whitelist adduser EMAIL_ADDRESS.

Thank you all for reading this information.
I sincerely wish all the best to the antiX community.

Hi temp, first use system utilitys rather than windoze to create bootable media such as flash card or USB Stick.
Windoze utilitys are unlikely to provide reliable media.

Before a long answer I would suggest you use a USB Live system until you are either comfortable with antiX
or decide you want to try MX or go back to Mint.

Regarding slim slimski, slimski is introduced since slim has no maintenance, it works fine in my experience.

NTFS support is now in Linux Kernel, as I will not run windoze can not help with whthat.

the experience of a window, or Mac OS – there is real, everything is simple, right there,

which is why I get donated computers, printers Scanners. Many good computers simply are too slow for windoze ,
supposedly too outdated for windoze 11. No drivers available if the system will run and Microsoft has Forced an
                                update from win 7 Pro.
On mac the introduction of simple driverless printing makes using older devices a no Go for many. They need a PPD or
                                microcode loading driver.

I can install and setup antiX in a very short time, less than an hour for a fully updated highly customized system.

I recently was forced to install windoze 10, getting to a point where it was fully updated took me in to the next day.
AND a perfectly good laser printer with less than 1000 pages printed and a Brand new! old stock Mustek scanner have no driver support…

Be fair antiX is very different to linux mint, I came from Mint Manjaro, update fails, Arch, great but at times painful, Suse,
fedora, monsters with gloom, er gnome.

For what it is worth, I wanted to find a way to install a chromium-based browser that would have the latest (or close to it) chromium.

I hope the following is useful:

                                  1. google-chrome-stable:

                                  Go to
                                  https://www.google.com/chrome/
and download the latest google-chrome-stable .deb file. Install it using sudo apt install <.deb>. The .deb file also installs the google chrome repository in addition to the google-chrome-stable binary. So updating is simply a matter of sudo apt update && sudo apt install google-chrome-stable. Google updates the latest google-chrome-stable binary very often, just like what they do in the Windows version.

                                  2. microsoft-edge-dev:

                                  Go to
                                  https://www.microsoftedgeinsider.com/en-us/download?platform=linux-deb
and download the latest microsoft-edge-dev .deb file under the Dev channel. Install it using sudo apt install <.deb>. The .deb file also installs the microsoft-edge-dev repository in addition to the microsoft-edge-dev binary. So updating is simply a matter of sudo apt update && sudo apt install microsoft-edge-dev. Microsoft updates the latest Edge binary very often, just like what they do in the Windows version.

You will find that these versions are very recent, a lot recent than the chromium versions on Debian.

                                  Hope this helps.
