In reply to: chromium vulnerability to various CVEs
Membercalciumsodium
I have been checking for a while. The current version of chromium on both buster and bullseye in Debian is still at version 90.x
Debian has not been updating chromium for a good while.
If one checks the versions of google-chrome-stable and microsoft-edge-dev, all based on chromium, they are at version 94.x
So Debian is really behind for a while. Previous to version 94.x was version 92.x. Even Debian has not gotten to version 92.x

I understand that some people are multi-lingual and want to have several languages available, and it’s a GOOD THING to have them available, but it would be nice to have an easy-to-use tool available, either at installation time or a post installation configuration tool to quickly select the locales to KEEP, and remove the others.
Mr Brian I really liked his idea. For example, if I need to save disk space I would keep only the folders that have the languages en, en_US, en_GB, en_UK, pt, pt_PT and pt_BR, I don’t know if it’s necessary to keep the folders that have en@??? ?. According to the estimate in antiX 19.2 full 64 bits that is all destroyed from so much testing, it would be about 357 MB less than the file in the /usr/share/locale folder. But, as the user may regret it for some reason in the future, it would be important to have a way to return everything in its proper place.
As a matter of fact, it can be a hassle for English speakers to receive translations they don’t need or don’t want. It really isn’t easy to please everyone. It is not easy to recruit new translators.
Wallon, I believe that all users need to know that they can help, especially those who do not read the texts contained in the “gazelle-installer” antiX installation process, especially the excerpts:
Support %1
%1 is supported by people like you. Some help others at the support forum – %2, or translate help files into different languages, or make suggestions, write documentation, or help test new software.Special ThanksThanks to everyone who has chosen to support %1 with their time, money, suggestions, work, praise, ideas, promotion, and/or encouragement. Without you there would be on the %1.%2 Dev Team.
It only became clear to me that I did not need a “formal invitation” or to be “invited to participate” when I read and reread the machine translation of these above texts several times. So I kept trying to find ways to help in some way, as I don’t have the financial means to donate or make money donations. If I donate R$ 1.00 (one real) to the project today, it is equivalent to exactly U$ 0.19 (nineteen cents) with the quotation of U$ 1.00 on the 19th -09-2021 of an incredible R$ 5.29, or equivalent to exactly E$ 0.16 (sixteen euro cents) with the quotation of E$ 1.00 on the 19-09-2021 of an incredible R$ 6, 20. I wonder what you can buy with U$ 0.19 or E$ 0.16, with R$ 1.00 you can buy a beaded lettuce (lactuca sativa) on the day of the promotion (I couldn’t find the English Wikipedia page). Back to the main topic…
When I want to introduce antiX to my colleagues or friends or family, I am always asked the question “Do you make a lot of money? I say no, I do it for free. People say that I am wasting my time and that it is useless.
Wallon, are you sure you didn’t hear this in Portuguese? (lots of laughter) I’ve heard this many times, but whenever I hear it, I burst out laughing with a long laugh, as this is not the person I donate my time to and to antiX, I donate my time to the users: @boy, @felipecardope, @Matheus, @marcelocripe (for myself) and for all the other people who use antiX and who suffer to use a program that is all in English language or even worse that they can’t use one program for being in English language or poorly translated to pt-BR and incomprehensible.
@boy’s quote fills me with energy and proves that we are on the right path to make antiX understandable in every corner of planet Earth:
boy wrote:
… , I’ve been noticing that more and more translations are coming from the menus and application programs that Marcelo comments on and asks for our opinions. Due to the texts being more and more in my language, I am learning antiX much easier and in a comfortable way learning antiX.Users of the Telegram group “MX Linux & antiX Brasil” are also grateful.
Linux is a spirit of sharing and freedom that is often rejected by our society. In my example, at the office, the big boss asked me not to talk about Linux any more, even with the IT people who work with subcontractors for the maintenance of our servers and computers.
I also see this kind of prejudice.
Most people who live near me wouldn’t even know what I was talking about if I mentioned Linux or antiX; my wife calls it “watching codes” on the screen!
I laughed a lot… I imagine that every time your wife looks at your screen the terminal is open.
Wallon and mr. Brian, I think I’ve already written in some other thread that I’ve heard the following sentence about antiX installed, configured and with some PPC customizations and mine, “Which Windows is this?”, this sentence in quotes the person referred to to antiX, at that time the PPC FT10 did not exist. This is not implemented yet, I’d like to see the two clickable links, so they will open in browser but didn’t manage to bewitch yad to be obedient. When using other options of yad text appears within a cruel white edit box only instead, and the links are not clickable still. Anybody around who has an idea how to fix this while keeping a halfway appealing design?
Another suggestion, a button that when clicking copies the text from the GUI allowing the user to paste into the automatic translator.
PPC has already used this feature in the “Control Panel for antiX”, I’ll send you the script.I support this proposal, this looks really useful. But it addresses another subject. This script here is meant for people not using antiX in English language by default, selecting “their” language from F2 live boot menu and then bump on an English antiX desktop anyway. They feel like duped if no explanation is given for this. And if we inform them about the problem, we can as well give them some advice how they can remedy this circumstance, so it will get fixed the sooner.
I really hope the anti-capitalist will look closely at this proposal and consider using it at ISO, it’s important for people to know that if they want they can participate and help antiX and consequently help other people.
Once used to Microsoft products people cultivate their addiction to this OS and will never accept any alternatives. But this is another thread…
It’s what I call the “jail” of Windows. I read the entire article, at the beginning of the text I was happy with what I read, but at the end of the text, unfortunately, the backtracking occurred. At the very least, the public administration had to throw away all the old computers in order to go back to using the new “prison” operating system.
The screenshots show the Brasilian English language user interface and what you see after clicking on »More information«, also in pt_BR here.
So you’ve managed to find a use for that proposed text to “invite” or “call” new translators to join the translator team.
Never forget that the English language texts I didn’t write are the automatic translations of the internet translators.

It is not easy to recruit new translators.

This is not implemented yet, I’d like to see the two links clickable, so they will open in browser but didn’t manage to bewitch yad to be obedient. When using other options of yad text appears within a cruel white edit box only instead, and the links are not clickable still.
But it addresses another subject.

The screenshots show the Brasilian Portuguese language user interface and what you see after clicking on »More information«, also in pt_BR here.

Version update to 0.4
The script is crafted to deal with four significant character language identifiers (e.g. pt_BR) as well as with two character language identifiers (e.g. fr) now.
Language template file (.pot) has got developer notes, and a first translation example is present for both, the script and the advanced pdf information file, already: Brasilian Portuguese (Thanks, Marcelo! Your suggestion »volunteer« is included also) The eloquence of speach in the texts should be checked by an English native speaker still, this goes also for Marcelos question whether better to use »totally« or »fully« here, I can’t decide.
please allow the user to copy the GUI texts from translation-info.sh
This is not implemented yet, I’d like to see the two links clickable, so they will open in browser but didn’t manage to bewitch yad to be obedient. Therefore, a convenient tool to remove all except the locales I explicitly select would be a nice addition, even if it’s a future addition. Not many distributions offer a convenient tool.

at the office, the big boss asked me not to talk about Linux any more, even with the IT people who work as subcontractors for the maintenance of our servers and computers.
Do you know what is the reason? Probably he has learned everything on PCs with Microsoft products installed only, and now he fears the transition to something else. He is simply afraid of LiMuX. I am sure his IT people are talking the hind leg off a donkey about this to him already, so he don’t want to hear it anymore. Once used to Microsoft products people cultivate their addiction to this OS and will never accept any alternatives. But this is another thread…

I can try to provide some leads. Ndiswrapper extracted exe files and installed them somewhere under /etc obviously, but what subdir was created I don’t remember; Here some leads:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/ndiswrapper/files/stable/ (as of 2020 so not that old!)
https://wiki.debian.org/NdisWrapper see particularly the “See also” paragraph :
ndisgtk – a graphical frontend for ndiswrapper
cabextract – a program to extract Microsoft Cabinet files
orange – extracts CAB files from self-extracting installers
unshield – extracts CAB files from InstallShield installersand ndiswrapper wiki page : http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
I hope it helps!
PS: it seems the driver to be extracted is located here :
https://www.netgear.fr/support/product/WG311v3.aspx#downloadI would try to extract it with cabextract and install it manually somewhere under a subdir in /etc (or perhaps search further on the ndiswrapper forums and such linked in their wiki)

You guys have me beat by a LONG stretch! My brother in law had 2-3 old systems that he was ready to take to the dump so I took them and they are now the main systems where I run antiX, but they are not nearly as old as your systems that you found.
However, my FIRST computer that I actually bought and used for my own use was one I bought in November 1995, not long after Microsoft contracted with the Rolling Stones, using their song “Start Me UP!” to introduce the Windows 95 START button.
I bought a Micron P100, a 100 Mhz 32-bit computer (if I remember correctly). It actually came with Windows for Workgroups 3.11; I bought a copy of Windows 95 and a book containing a version of Slackware (somewhere between 0.98 and 1.2), not 100% certain. The original media in the book could only run 640×480 graphics; I found drivers online to get it to run better on Slackware, though I think Windows 95 actually included them.
Once I got Slackware working right, it was a pleasure to use, but it’s FAR easier to install today, mostly because the latest hardware drivers are typically included in the most current releases.
Of my brother in law’s systems, the one I like most (even though it does NOT have back lit keys) is a Lenovo Thinkpad X201. It’s rock solid, has decent keys, and though it’s no longer a “race horse”, the overall solid feel of the system, coupled with the smooth manner in which it works with antiX (any of the versions) make it a real pleasure, the BEST of my old systems. My Dell Inspiron 5558 is pretty solid but the Thinkpad has better keyboard feel and even more solid construction than the well put together Inspiron.

I have always been a promoter of choice regarding software, the choice to choose freely available software (whether it has a BSD, GNU, Linux or something else), and also the choice to pay for commercial software and support.
Though I personally prefer Linux software, I also believe that having Microsoft and Apple selling commercial hardware and software is also a good thing. It provides a lot of people with good jobs.
Having companies like Dell, IBM, Lenovo, Acer, Asus and many others selling hardware with a variety of software is also healthy for the industry.
Each of us can choose whatever we prefer from these and other alternatives. We certainly use antiX and appreciate that it works with many different types of hardware.

Hi,
Trying to get antiX installed on a newish machine that supports EFI (i7, 16gb RAM, 900gb SSD).
SSD passes SMART test & installs.
Tried both custom configuration & auto — the last is auto.
I’ve tried about 5 times (use G-Parted to unmount & delete), but still no boot device is detected by the BIOS (endless load BiOS loop without USB).
The GRUB boot rescue tools are also unable to detect it.
In LIVE USB I can see the files in Space-FM & they appear to work. I can use the MBR repair tool on the install, but it doesn’t seem to help. I also tried antiX update before install, but it ends with after some writes with a blank Ok dialog (also doesn’t seem to help).

NOTE: there are no ‘Secure’ or ‘Fast’ Boot settings (or anything odd) enabled.
Any ideas?

In Belgium, we no longer have to pay and register our computer or TV to pay tax since January 2018.
A computer screen was considered a TV screen at the time.My job = tax consultant and certified accountant. You have to study for 8 years after you turn 18 in Belgium.
Belgium has decided that it will no longer be possible to deduct a thermal vehicle for the self-employed, employees, companies from 1 January 2026.
Everyone will have to drive a Tesla and have a heated garage to recharge their battery in winter. To protect the battery, Tesla will not charge below 5°Celsius.In my business, everything runs on Windows / Google Chrome only.Take the example of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) / CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software such as Navision, Oracle, DJEdwards, Odoo, SAP… all installed on Windows servers.
The Belgian state pays Microsoft a licence for each student every year.
The ITAA (Institute for Tax Advisors and Accountants) in Belgium publishes Excel files with lots of macros and pivot tables that are not compatible with LibreOffice.
(it is not accessible to the public). I made a request for ODS or ODT files and it was rejected.Everyone who works in finance has to use 2 or 3 screens on the same computer because we no longer use paper for bank statements, invoices….
antiX still has to make a big effort in this area. You have already seen the foreign exchange traders, they work with 6 screens on the same PC. I have not found a simple documentation with Google to install Xinerama on antiX. This will make antiX bigger because ArandR is not enough… As a reminder, computer science is not my profession and therefore I’m limited. I already work 60 hours a week for my job and I don’t have enough time left for Linux / translation on Transifex / testing and my family.I notice that people are abandoning old PCs faster and faster because of video conferences (Covid19 period) which require 4 cores to have a good video (Zoom, Microsoft Teams…).
To follow my online seminars, I use Linux but only with Google Chrome (not compatible with other browsers). Beware, if I have a connection failure, I don’t have my certificate. It’s really annoying and it’s costing me a lot of money for someone who is subject to continuous training for a minimum of 40 hours per year.
This is the reality, I work with Windows 10 / Google Chrome and I try Linux. I’m sad that I can’t do more with Linux.

@Wallon: I am very sorry that you face so many restrictions in your country.
I can’t imagine why there would be preferences for Chrome and Windows – I wonder if Microsoft’s Edge and Windows also works? In any case, that is extremely restrictive (and apparently explicit) coding restrictions that don’t make any particular sense. Perhaps this was coded by a naive coder who had no idea, or perhaps someone is on a “payroll” for someone with financial interests in these companies?

The second part (is there an “advisory program”) occurred to me as I was writing the question and seemed like a neat tool.
The reason Google and Amazon (and Facebook) are being highly fined by different governments is because of them “recommending” articles, links, or purchasing items in the search results, showing them above everything else. Let me rephrase: they are placing in the first results what they want you to read/buy, mainly what earns them more money or removing any results from their rivals (goes against fair-play).
Any advice App is just showing you what they want you to see, and not what is best (and what is “best” is just subjective). Isn’t Ubuntu and Fedora the “best”? Then antiX and other smaller distros would never be considered an option, because they are not “the best”.
Linux is not the Apple Store, where things published there can only be approved by someone above and you cannot place any app for everyone to use. And Linux users enjoy such different flavors, that it would go against the “freedom” philosophy to imply that an app can tell you what is better (and select for you). If it did, tiling window manager would be banned, there would only be Gnome desktop environment and only one init (systemd).
You can read articles on “what is the best XXX software in linux”, but you will never see an app that does the same. An article clearly contains the subjective opinion of its author (and the reader understands this), but an app doesn’t have that personality, and could be regarded as someone trying to impose their will over the user, making decisions for them, that goes against the “freedom of choice” Linux philosophy.
If you want something artificially showing “what users like best”, install one of the “software stores” that big DEs use (Gnome software or KDE Discover). You will see what “most people use” first in each category, but not the obscure programs that sometimes work better than the bloated popular apps. Ths should make you feel more familiar if you are used to the App Store, Google Store, Microsoft Store, etc.

The CPU is supposedly has a 700 MHz processor. I do not know why the System Information shows 700/100 MHz.
I think it is time to give up on the wireless connection problem. I can move the computer and connect to the router using a LAN cable when I need internet connection, which will not be real often.
This was an old computer that was in the garage that I am using to learn what I need to know to install Linux and applications on my working computer when Microsoft tells me I cannot upgrade it to Windows 11. My working computer is an ASUS CM1745 that is only about 10 years old. It is 64 bit, has a dual-core AMD A4 3420 processor, 2.8 GHz, chipset type AMD A55.
I did not find older versions of antiX and I need something that will load using a CD. I am going to reinstall anitX on the Compaq, this time while connected to the Internet (last time I was not connected to the internet during the installation). I do not think this will make a difference regarding the wireless connection, but it will give me a fresh start. I will also be able to check out the various sources of applications and install and test them before going back to an off-line status and try out the various applications.
I thank you all for your help and counsel during this time. You have bee very helpful.

Wallon
Dear All,
I have some annoying things with my new installation with two screens/monitors in antiX 21.
I’m a translator for antiX and MX Linux. For my personal comfort, I bought and installed a second 75hz display-port monitor.
I asked for help on the MX Linux forum to get my new installation (one 60hz HDMI screen and one 75hz display-port screen) working because the ArandR and Display softwares were not working properly. As usual, I used a Live usb key (Windows 10 + Rufus), I chose the Space-IceWM environment on the Live key and I did the installation on another USB3 key by saving the settings of my Live USB key. I did the whole installation in French with Linux kernel 5.
I did the installation on antiX 21 with the ArandR software. I saved the settings in the file /home/Wallon/.screenlayout/default.sh.
Here it is the code of my default.sh file.
I’m not sure if my screen on the display-port is set to 75hz because in the info full details report, there is no mention of the refresh rate for this screen.1) If you see something wrong in this file, please tell me ?
#!/bin/sh xrandr --output DVI-I-0 --off --output DVI-I-1 --off --output HDMI-0 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 1920x0 --rotate normal --output DP-0 --primary --mode 1920x1080 --rate 75 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output DP-1 --off --output DP-2 --off --output DP-3 --off --output DP-4 --off --output DP-5 --off2) If I automatically launch in full screen these programs for example;
– LibreOffice,
– Firefox ESR,
– SpaceFm,
– Geany,
I can’t drag and drop the software window from one screen to the other?I found a rather cumbersome procedure to move a window from one screen to another.
a) Alt + F5 (Restore)
b) With the mouse, click on the blue bar above the screen, hold the click and drag to the other screen
c) Alt + F10 (Maximize)3) Please see the screenshot attached to my message.
When I do a printscreen of either the left or right screen (pointed with my mouse), antiX merges the image of my 2 screens.
How can I make a full printscreen of one screen without going through a window selection?I would like a choice like for example;
Do you want a printscreen:
a) Left screen,
b) Right screen,
c) Merge both screens?4) How to have the taskbar below on both screens?
5) I recall that I did the installation by choosing Space-IceWM.
If I change the desktop environment for example Space-Fluxbox, I lose a screen ! I have to restart my desktop to get my 2 Space-IceWM screens back.
If I change the desktop environment for example Rox-IceWm, I lose a screen ! I have to reboot my desktop to find my 2 Space-IceWM screens.
In short, I can’t change my desktop environment. It seems that ArandR is not automatically reactivated. I say that, I say nothing, it’s perhaps another software which must be reactivated to recover my 2 screens.6) Don’t ask me to test with the Linux kernel 4 because my NVIDIA driver doesn’t work as usual. I would have to do a full install with kernel 4 and install the driver on that kernel.
Best regards,

Hi,
Trying to get antiX installed on a newish machine that supports EFI (i7, 16gb RAM, 900gb SSD).
Screencaps:

NOTE: there are no ‘Secure’ or ‘Fast’ Boot settings (or anything odd) enabled.
Any ideas?
