      Hello,

I can’t install an NVIDIA driver for the 900 series (the exact reference is GTX960 launched in 2015)
I go through the Nvidia Driver Installer in the Control Center.
Here is what it has been offering me for several weeks.

      Installed is: (none)

Which driver do you wish to install

      Main repos or debian-backports?

      1: Main 418.181.07-1

      2: MX Test 460.39-1~bpo10+1

      3: Exit

      Enter Number of selection

The 418 driver does not install. This driver is quite old.
I tried to install driver 460 (test) but it gives me a black screen.
I tried several kernels but it doesn’t change anything, I still get the 2 drivers 418 and 460 test.
With MX Linux, I use the 450 driver which works really well because I use for example the Webrender for hardware acceleration in Firefox.

You can guess that I would like to install driver 450 to remove the screen tearing that annoys me on my screen.

      Best regards,

          Hi @mckaygerhard,

The translation of your text in English to Brazilian Portuguese by the internet translator was not entirely understandable.

I couldn’t understand, did you say this is your first post? Looking at your profile, you are registered: 9 months, 2 weeks ago, so I suppose you have been here longer than me.

In 8 (eight) months that I have been here on this forum, I have never seen more experienced users or antiX developers encouraging the disposal of any computer or notebook. A while ago I had read a topic from a new user on antiX who wanted to use a computer with an MX processor (I don’t remember the speed) and 256 MB of RAM. And yet, this user received several suggestions on how to revive this computer.

          mckaygerhard wrote:

In this regard I agree with you, usually newer programs require more RAM and more processing. But we all know that this is the natural development of technology associated with programmed or even forced obsolescence. You have read this MS announcement “Support for Windows XP is over”, the justifications are extremely weak: “… together with our hardware and software partners, it’s time to invest our resources in supporting the latest technologies, so that we can continue to offer great new experiences “, or” If your current computer cannot run Windows 10, it may be time to think about buying a new one. ” (And what do the current computer do?). I just don’t know what will become of our planet with so much electronic waste being discarded in inappropriate places (I write this because of what I see in the city where I live and in others that I had the opportunity to visit for work or for a walk).

As for this technical issue of GTK2 and GTK3 I cannot comment because I haven’t studied it.

According to mr. Brian mentioned it very well, I suggested in this list the SliTaz team, only with the union of the different distributions that a bigger action would be possible, than the individual actions that each Linux distribution. Furthermore, I think that if the knowledge of these kernel developers and the operating system itself is not passed on, one day these people will inevitably die, as this is the destiny of all human beings, unfortunately the knowledge of these people will die with them.

@PPC, as usual, synthesized the possibilities of antiX very well …

Currently with the ISO “antiX-19-legacy-bet2_386-base.iso” created by @Xecure, more possibilities of use are possible with antiX 19.3 with the 2016 kernel 4.4.240, which is not that old, see URL he sent me https://www.kernel.org/category/releases.html, Windows 7, for example, was released on October 22, 2009 and was abandoned on January 14, 2020.

I try to implement the solutions I have at hand, the antiX 19.3 full 32 bits or 64 bits have already helped me and help me revive computers/notebooks and now with the ISO “antiX-19-legacy-bet2_386-base.iso ”It is possible to revive computers with a motherboard with SIS or VIA video chipset can also receive antiX.

I am grateful to everyone from the forum that help me, whether making tools (programs or scripts) available or sharing their technical knowledge, through this support I can multiply antiX in the region where I live and through the WhatsApp, Telegram groups and on YouTube channels.

              @Lone Sniper:

If you have not yet, you will see soon enough that (Open Source, e.g. Unix and Linux) are intenational communities, which welcome all who wish to help.
@anticapitalista is Greek (thank any god you like for Greece, he is a gent. and speaks Good Queen Bess’ English!)

Others are in the continental EU, Americans, and all other flavours of humanity.

If I may be so bold, I would outline some things we all believe: (if they disagree, this is a democracy led by our Greek leader, who speaks excellent English, so they have the right to say otherwise, always.)

Freedom: We refuse to serve Apple, Google, Microsoft or ANY nameless CORP. We want our personal info. to stay at home, They (I, with their help) drove GDPR and the like. We refuse to surrender personal info. (CORPS love to steal, to make money). You have friends who value privacy here.

No one-sided purchases. They sell a license, one time, and then want payment every decade or year. Open Source means, if you are a programmer, you have the code, to fix it for you. To hell with their profit. And you are obligated to share with others who fight profit and dictators, to the benefit of all humanity.

Being transnational, you’ve no idea how many nations citizen help, just ask, we all speak English, the lingua franca of the internet, but we also speak something more useful: Human understanding.

P.S. Been to London more than 6 times. Always find another nice thing to see and experience. As an American, am horified by Brexit and Johnson, they will (pardon my French) F your country for generations. Vote them out NOW, for the sake of the UK, please. As a EU citizen/Bulgarian it is even more clear: Johnson abuses xenophobia to LIE to the UK. Kick him in the arse. Please. Did you know, his grandpa is named Mustapha and is Turkish? Ask PM why he pretends to be UK, while he is a Turk? Ask him in Parliament to explain this, the corrupt Asian twat.

Restore older computers to working order.

MS even followed my lead ( 🙂 ) and seems to be adding a weather app to Windows 10’s toolbar…

I had first found the Windows 10 Weather Forecast website in Portuguese, then on the Microsoft blog. I even played with the PPC about “Microsoft copies PPC from antiX” (laughs).

The Weather Forecast that PPC implemented on the Tint2 toolbar allows the user to configure the URL for their City / Municipality / District, in addition to the language to be displayed. It is super lightweight, ad-free and configurable. It is a fantastic solution!

Congratulations, PPC for all the work on developing the Tint2 script, allowing it to be installed and configured automatically with only ONE “.sh” file. It is unbelievable to do everything with an executable file. My applause is standing …

                Thank you!

Hi PPC, why not ungoogled chromium, or chromium, many of the refugees are looking for as much privacy as possible, it is a major theme here in Germany.
One of my arguments for moving which gets plenty of attention.
Maybe awareness not so much the case in Brazil but still a valid argument…

                  Hello ModdIt,

I just saw your post. I think there are some explanations.

I cannot speak for everyone in Brazil, as we are in more than 200 million people, with access to information in extremely different conditions … So I will speak for myself and for what I observe.

The information regarding the invasion of privacy I have been acquiring with all friends and colleagues in this forum, my learning here is daily. We have excellent people here, several teachers and masters. Each one shares a little of his knowledge and experiences and they all grow together.

I depend on a browser that assists me with the built-in translator, so, as has been taught here several times, “Ungoogled-Chromium” seems to be the best option.

Regarding people’s customs, this is problematic, taking the person out of what he understands is his comfort zone, is complicated and makes it difficult to start antiX. So, when a user is able to have what they are used to seeing in Windows, working perfectly with antiX, it solves this problem of migrating from one operating system to another. The other example that I can cite is the case of Internet Explorer, which for a long time was the most used internet browser, not because of its quality, but because of its advertising and because it came pre-installed on Windows. I know that in Europe, Microsoft could not force the user to use Internet Explorer, due to the long legal process. Then came Google Chrome with a devastating advertisement and it still comes pre-installed on the Android operating system. History repeats itself … ignorance or lack of information promotes the use of the “new” internet browser that is in fashion.

I suggest that, we could avoid the expression “refugees” from Windows, it seems to be a very hostile word, I think it is preferable to write ex Windows users. We have to remember that, several people do not know what Windows, Android or what are the thousands of Linux and BSD distributions, many people do not know what an operating system is. I know many people who do not know the meaning of the word windows in Portuguese.

PPC, Xecure, do an excellent job in producing GUI programs that allow to lessen the impact of the user in the transition from one operating system to the other.

I don’t know what job Bobc is doing? I would like to know.

I am glad that you are able to collaborate with the translation into your languages, I am doing this in every program I have contact with, whether with the Xecure, PPC or Robin programs. We need to increase this team to internationalize all antiX programs to the maximum.

Programs translated into Brazilian Portuguese until today (01/24/2021): Tint2 version PPC, antix-wifi-switch, antix-cloud, yad-calendar, SpaceFM (file “session”), set_time-and_date , TIM, TIM from PPC Tint2, icon add to desktop, trash icon for antiX, control-panel (unofficial), unplugdrive and tell-device.

Robin proposed a simpler way for us to do the translation of several antiX programs that do not yet have a translation or are not on the transifex website. I hope that the proposal for a model will be accepted and approved by the team, because the form he used in the tell-device program is very easy for anyone to collaborate with the translation. It also has another technique of translating to several languages in the same “.sh” script file.

                  Wallon

                    Hello,

I’m new on this forum and sorry if I do some mistakes in English. French is my mother tong.
I’m a little bit trouble because I have noticed that “antiX 19 Full” has not the same options in English and in French in the window “add-desktop”.
I have tested my USB Live on my desktop (Intel i5-6400) and tested also my old laptop (Amd Athlon) with antiX installed. It’s not the same kernel for both and I have the same issue.
                    To be sure;
                    1) Icon “Favorite Application”
                    2) Applications
                    3) Preferences
                    4) Add Menu Item
                    5) In the window “add-desktop”, the line “Item Location”, we can choose;
                    -> 1) Application Menu
                    or
                    -> 2) Desktop Shortcut
                    or
                    -> 3) Personal.

But for antiX 19 in french, In the window “add-desktop”, the line “Item Location”, it’s impossible to choose something. All the options are on the same line and the narrow at the end of line is not activated. Please, find attached my 2 screenshots (English versus french)

Since most people have smartphones, and, at least in Europe, most of those devices are running Android, here’s my list, that allows me to me a tiny bit freer from Google- I also use some extra privacy settings, have a switch to turn off sensors/camera/mic, turned off bluetooth scanning, limited wifi search and turned off Playstore :

*Browser – Bromite ( it’s open source, ad free, available from https://github.com/bromite/bromite/releases ), Firefox with privacy addons (it’s open source, ad free, available from Google Playstore)
*Calendar – etar (it’s open source, ad free, available from Google Playstore)
*Camera – Open camera (it’s open source, ad free, available from Google Playstore)
*Ebook reader- Aireader ( completely ad free, provides TTS functionality out-of-the-box https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neverland.alreader&hl=en_US&gl=US), FBreader ( available in Google Playstore, has an instalable tts plug-in), Bookreader (open source fork of FBReader, available from https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.github.axet.bookreader/ ); Cool Reader (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.coolreader/ ) [yeah, I read a lot…. 🙂 ]
                      *E-mail – K-9 Mail (it’s open source, ad free, available from https://github.com/k9mail/k-9/releases )
*File Manager – X-plore (not open source but extremely feature rich, despite the free version having some features that are locked), “Material Files” (from Hai Zhang) – not as feature rich as the free version of X-plore, but great- it lacks integration with cloud drives, if that’s important for you, but allows sharing files via ftp server (it’s open source, ad free, available from Google Playstore)
*Gallery- There’s really no need for third party galleries, but, if you really want a nice alternative: Focus Go ( ad free, on Google Playstore)
*Office Suite – Collabora Office (it’s android’s LibreOffice port, largely compatible with MS Office formats, like .docx, etc, ad free, available from Google Playstore – ideal for viewing all kinds of documents, not so much for editing, at least not at the current time, unless you are in a pinch), Microsoft Office apps (free version, available from Google Playstore, require a free Microsoft account to activate, but can be used off-line, great for both viewing AND editing documents)
*Podcasts – AntennaPod (it’s open source, ad free, available from Google Playstore)
*Pdf reader – Adobe Reader (has a free version on Google Playstore – if it detects an Internet Connection, it makes you log on…), Xodo pdf reader (light, also allows to fill pdf forms, add/remove/reorder pages, create pdf files from scratch/pictures/files, has cloud connectivity, ad free, available on Google Playstore), Gaaiho pdf reader (very light pdf reader with annotation capabilities – has text re-flow but does not seem to always work-, ad free, on Google Playstore)
*Media player – VLC (it’s open source, ad free, available from Google Playstore)
*News/Rss Reader- Feedr – even allows you to download news and then you can read them off-line (ad free, available from Google Playstore)
*Scanner application – you can use your android device as a high quality and extremely fast scanner, that generates pdf files – there are many great apps that do this, “Mobile Doc Scanner” is, for me, the best one, but it’s not free. Strangly enough the best Free, and ad free scanner, for me, is Microsoft’s “Office Lens” (both apps are available from Google Playstore)
*Notes – Joplin (it’s open source, ad free, available from Google Playstore)
*Youtube – Newpipe (it’s open source, ad free, available fromhttps://newpipe.net/#download) -it’s fast, ad free and allows you to download videos/audio/substitles, what else do you need?

                      EXTRA:
*NetGuard – a free application that acts as a firewall – filtering, per application. access to Wi-fi and/or Mobile Internet – a great application that allows using applications that have intrusive adds (I know adds are the away developers make money, but, sometimes they overkill on adds- for those cases, I black list them on NetGuard, all the rest… hey, devs deserve to be paid for their work, right? Give them a break, pay by watching a reasonable ammount of Publicity)
*GPS navigation – use alternative apps, available in your country (in Portugal we have “Meo drive”, a free, ad-supported, GPS map that works off line)
                      *Application Store- f-droid.org
*Light Casual games – Patience Revisited (available from Google Playstore)

TIP: Use “web apps” instead of installing applications: for example- I have a Bromite icon to access 9gag, I do not need to install the 9gag app to view their content, same for MS Outlook, some news apps, etc…

You can use opensource alternative applications apps here:

                        I have 2 suggestions:
1- My on going (and nearly completed antiX calendar- an upgraded yad-calendar that also has alarms (an runs in less than 1 Mb of idle RAM)
2- A script to access cloud drives from the default file manager (using rclone)- https://github.com/PPC-scripts/access_cloud
It automatically configures Google Drive, all other cloud drives have to be configured via a CLI keyboard only menu.

Upgrade the unplug usb devices script (I made some suggestions a while ago)

Not essential (and I’m not sure if it’s the right topic)- add scrcpy (stream android device’s screen on antiX, and allow to use mouse and keyboard to control android devices) to the package installer- it allows people with very old pc’s to play modern android games (via the android device)- it’s already in the repo, but most people don’t even know what it is…
Anticapitalista told a user how to install the latest inkscape (if I’m not mistaken)- add that too to the package installer.
I compiled a “Office 365 on electron“, I found on Github, altering it to work with free Microsoft accounts. Do the devs think it should be added to the Package installer’s Office section? – it’s 64bits only. It may be handy for Windows’s refugees (and people dealing with badly formated .docx and .xlsx documents).

Hello team, I wonder if I can change my screen resolution to a higher value. When I look at the Nvidia X Server Settings, or Control Center > ARandR, the maximum set is 1366×768. My gpu is Nvidia GT240M, and before I switched to Antix, I could use higher resolution in microsoft windows, can we try something for that?

I hit this error when I tried to add the source repos the other day.

                              I cannot reproduce this either.

I cannot reproduce the issues in the first thread when using the http://la.mxrepo.com/antix/buster/ repos.
