I still wonder if it can be installed in a Windows machine within the “S mode” on

You could try it the way this video describes:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILl4GuVAY5o

      – At 00:02:29 select the antiX 17.3 ISO instead of the Windows 8 ISO.
      – At 00:04:38 you should see then the antiX 17.3 live boot menu instead of Windows 8 welcome, then just fire it up.
      – Check the settings from 00:08:59 to 00:09:26

If this fails with the antiX 17.3 ISO, you’ll have to ask Microsoft Support about the details how to make it run on windows in s-mode, they do know their OS. This is not an antiX issue then, the modern microsoft hyper-v systems can’t even run their own Win-XP as guest without generating BSODs on install already.

Just let me venture a guess: you’ll have to tweak the Windows registry (delete some specific keys mentioned in https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/threat-protection/device-guard/enable-virtualization-based-protection-of-code-integrity ) and after that activate and deactivate again the Kernel-isolation features Memory-integrity and Firmware-protection in order to recreate the registry entries properly. After reboot the hyper-v should work with virtualbox 6.x at least and let you boot other guest systems.

      – General information on how to run linux on windows hyper-v hosts: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/best-practices-for-running-linux-on-hyper-v
      – Virtualbox specific information how to run Linux on Windows in “S” mode (hyper-v) can be found here also: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewforum.php?f=6

Again: Good luck. Microsoft will put a spoke in your wheel wherever they can, to avoid you running anything they don’t like.

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

        Dear anticapitalista,

        Many thanks for the explanations.

If we could have a list of allowed or forbidden characters, it would be easier for all translators. We could avoid some bugs.
I will change the translation in Transifex right away and use the US quotes.
Please look at the Transifex screenshot, there is no warning for these 2 buttons that have been translated with chevron quotes.
If you are working with LibreOffice in French, the quotes are automatically set to a chevron quotes. It is also the same for Microsoft Word in French.

Even though PPC doesn’t like me, I recognise its great value for all that it brings to the community. I am deeply grateful to him.

        Best regards,
        Wallon

          1) Since you mentioned drivers, installing some firmware-related packages (i.e. packages more suitable to your HW/system, such as ‘linux-firmware-nonfree’ etc) may help.
E.g. you can open terminal and run the following command:
          apt-cache search firmware > FIRMWARE.txt
‘apt’ is a packaging utility in Debian-based systems (antiX is based on Debian), you search the cache (database) for ‘firmware’ and ‘>’ redirects the (standard) output to a file named ‘FIRMWARE.txt’.
You may open the file with editor of your preference and examine its content.
Similarly, you may search for ‘radeon’.
Beware: installing drivers may sometimes lead to undesired effects.

Search for intel suggests ‘intel-microcode’ might be worth a try if not already installed.
          apt-cache search intel | grep -i intel > INTEL.txt

          2) Streaming videos in modern browsers simply is CPU heavy; you can do the following to reduce the load:
2.A) Use add-ons to block some scripts, adds etc. which should reduce the clutter that would normally be eating up both CPU and RAM.
2.B) Try other browsers; e.g. some sites may be optimised for chromium-based browsers since Microsoft [MS Edge] and Google [Chrome], two big players, use those.
          2.C) Tweak the browser settings.

Also, some people state that using another program/app, such as ‘mpv’ to stream from youtube, improves performance and their experience as @punranger has indicated by his advice.

          3) You could consider upgrading CPU and/or RAM by buying a compatible second hand CPU/RAM-modules on some online outlets for a reasonable price.
Not sure what requirements and max. supported RAM is in case of your motherboard.
Unfortunately, it seems that 2GB RAM is max. you can get.
          https://www.hwupgrade.it/forum/showthread.php?t=1336090
          https://www.datamemorysystems.com/dms-memory/asustek-computer/a7cc-7005m.htm

          4) I have never done the below and I mention this for the sake of completeness only.
If you are willing to dive deep into Linux and invest a *lot* of time, you can — at least in theory — re-compile some of the resource-heavy programs specifically on your HW. This could lead to a performance improvement since you compile on your specific 32-bit HW instead of on a more general 32-bit architecture (for which the packages you installed were built) where less optimisations can be made for the compiled program to work on all the target 32-bit systems.
The downsides are that you would have to do that whenever a package is upgraded, some packages are re-packed or built specifically for antiX without systemd and I have no idea what modifications were necessary.

            Xunzi_23, on this issue:

Regarding antiX 22 I am unsure when changes to something in the system or older kernel began to cause problems.

The kernel not supporting your graphics card is not your problem alone.

I know very well that Microsoft with each new Windows abandons support for various old devices. Likewise, NVidia, with its famous and expensive video cards, abandons support for several old devices or does not make its code available for use on GNU/Linux and BSDs.

In antiX specifically, we have technical support from many experts on this forum, even if you are a beginner. This situation does not happen in other GNU/Linux distributions.

For example, kernel 4.4 is the only one that works on several video cards from the Via and SIS brands that we have here in Brazil. In the not-too-distant past and here on the forum, Xecure has built 3 fully functional unofficial ISOs, among them the pseudo-antix-19 legacy bet3 com Kernel 4.4.0-264. The @ensabahnur, the creator of respin Pin Linux OS, was the one who guided me and taught me how to do each step of remastering ISOs from antiX 21 full with kernel 4.4.0-296.

I usually do the following sequence:

1 – I try to boot with the latest antiX.
2 – If it doesn’t work with the latest antiX I try the antiX of the previous edition.
3 – If it doesn’t work with antiX from the previous edition, I try the ISO Remastering antiX 21 Full in 32 and 64 bits with Kernel 4.4.0-296.
4 – If it doesn’t work with the antiX 21 remaster ISO with Kernel 4.4.0-296, I’ll try another even older edition.

            – – – – –

            Xunzi_23, sobre esta questão:

Regarding antiX 22 I am unsure when changes to something in the system or older kernel began to cause problems.

Eu costumo fazer a seguinte sequência:

When I left Microsoft Windows back in 2014 and jumped ship, I also went a bit crazy with Linux multi-booting, particularly in the first 6 months of dizzying indecision. At one stage, I have to admit to having significantly more than 20 distros multibooted on a single drive on my Asus X71Q (see footnote), which is my main day-to-day working laptop. The Linux-multibooting worked fine, no problems at all, though I remember that the sudo update-grub operation would take an increasingly longer time with each OS addition to the multiboot list! It was like every new distro that I tried, got added to the multiboot list – a bit like stamp-collecting in the ‘old days’, it became quite addictive! I’m sure many forum members can identify with that.

Now, I have only three distros multibooted on the Asus (thankfully), on three separate partitions within the same SSD as follows:
antiX21 (installed long-term): my work horse for day-to-day work (admin, internet, etc)
antix19.5 (recently installed): for editing photos only – this version has python2, needed for the resynthesizer plugin in GIMP, for editing out time-stamps
wattOS: for TV live-streaming only (e.g. channel 5 here in the U.K.)

Why do I have a dedicated OS (wattOS) for TV live-streaming? The answer is quite simple. Because I’ve set up antiX21 to be secure [Adblock (hosts)+uBlock-Origin+Badger], it blocks TV-live-streaming on Channel 5. I don’t want to unblock the security on antiX21 to allow live-streaming, as it might just load a bunch of crap onto antix21 and mess it up. This is why I’ve got a separate OS for the TV, one which hasn’t got any adware/malware blockers activated, so that TV-livestreaming will work. As it’s a separate OS, with it’s own partition, hopefully it’ll keep any downloaded malware separate from the other OS partitions.

Many people say that when Windows does a big update, it deletes the Linux distribution that is installed on the same disk. So I have always done installations on external SSDs or USB 3.1 drives in Legacy mode (MBR). I have never had a problem.

This works with MBR and UEFI. The issue is Microsoft assumes they can repartition which results in partition designations changing and the bootloader or bootmanager referencing the old designation for non-windows OSes. Rude!

Simplest solution is to use a dedicated storage (disk/ssd/usb flash) for windows and another for other OSes, otherwise, you have to update the bootload/manager with the correct partition and, possibly, the underlying OS.

                    Hello to all,

I get this message when I do the “sudo apt update” command.
I have searched the internet but I can’t find anything. Is it related to my computer? Is it a repository bug? Do I have to wait for the repository to work?

How to Search for AntiX solutions to your problems

antiX doesn’t lock partitions. So you have to find out whether Windows has locked them, or whether your BIOS did this for some strange reason. I bet it was windows which has locked the partition, this OS is known to do such weird things. So you should probably ask Microsoft product support how to unlock it again.

Board search is obviously still broken for now, so please use a Board search replacement for now. Simply prepend all your searches by the term „site:antixforum.com” at startpage search site.

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

What will the name of the program be? If the name “Touchpad Toggle” is to be changed to “Touchy Yad”

No! that script name was created for me, as a side joke – I used the “yad” part so I know it’s the version that uses yad, and “touchy” is a play on words (that makes no sense in portuguese, just in English – “Touch” is something related to touch, but “Touchy” is something or someone that’s is too sensitive 🙂
I like the touchpad-toggle name myself!

As for icons- we have several, available by default – I tried this one, that’s transparent:
/usr/share/icons/Adwaita/48×48/devices/input-touchpad-symbolic.symbolic.png and also this one /usr/share/icons/papirus-antix/48×48/apps/touchpad.png
(easier to see, on a dark background, I guess)

Note: Since I do not like to see text when a nice icon will suffice, I’m playing with using yad “notification” with only the corresponding icon, nothing more. Like the original notification, it goes away after 3 seconds or if you click it. In this version the only text that needs to be localized it the warning saying no Touchpad was detected…

I know marcelo likes to see text, so users can read it and be fully aware of what that information means… But… well: if the user just clicked/launched something that’s called “touchpad toggle” and a notification appears on the screen, showing the image of a touchpad with a small cross on it, how dumb would you have to be to not understand what that means? Dumb enough, probably, to wonder why a tv without sound has that image of a speaker crossed out, maybe? But, well, use the one folks you like better (or the original one, that uses real system notifications)…

I’m trying to attach that version of the script, that shows only the icon referring to the touch-pad being on or off.

Edit: and while I was writing this, you @marcelocripe wrote that post about liking to have more text on GUI’s… How ironic.
Marcelo, you can translate anything you want, but the person that creates the program or script does so using the style he/she likes best. I’m a minimalist. For me, a picture is really worth a thousand words. And I’ve not really used a Microsoft product, on a computer that’s mine, for many years now, I couldn’t care less about what MS thinks looks nice. But I do like nice design ideas, no matter who creates them. I’m commenting just on why my scripts look the way they look, I’m not discussing localization- like I said I wouldn’t. In conclusion: you sometimes have no text to translate in the scripts I create because I, as their creator, think no text should be there. It’s as easy as that!

                          P.

Since clicking the window does not make it go away, I left a “close” button on the windows. I hope that the ” x ” sign is universally understood, and lets users know what that button does… (Yes, Marcelo, this is me being ironic, my friend 🙂 ).

You know very well that I prefer to be able to translate everything, including program buttons. We shouldn’t stick to the “standards” made by Microsoft in Windows in using images that are supposed to be understandable to all people. If the “X” button is for “Close Window” or “Close Program”, then why don’t you let me translate it?
As you are the ones who write the programming codes and not me, so I can only translate what is allowed by you programmers.

                            – – – – –

Comparing Linux and Windows in 2022

Mr Brian, I think the main difference between some GNU/Linux and Windows that was not covered in the article is that with some specific operating systems, such as antiX, TinyCore, SliTaz, Puppy Linux and other few distribution options, allow computers that are considered junk by Microsoft to be used in full and are not junk.

But its not just the machines that are treated as useless junk, its also the PEOPLE that own them…

Not only is a machine a terrible thing to waste, so are the owners that couldn’t afford new ones capable of running MS’s latest crud.

Another thing to note: at least one good thing about both antiX in particular and Linux distributions in general is that there is almost always more than one alternative to a problem, whether it’s a kernel issue, an application issue or something else, because Linux offers choices. Beyond that, we even have the freedom of choice between software freedoms in various forms and commercial software, with different features and paid support. I know the vast majority of people here have either a general dislike, and in a few cases, an intense dislike for anything commercial, but particularly against institutions like Facebook, Google, and Microsoft. The mere mention of those names has evoked strong words more than once, so all I say is that each of us is fortunate to have a choice whether to touch any of that stuff or to avoid it no matter what – and some of us do just that.

At the moment I’m running Endeavour OS. This software is based on Arch Linux and it’s very good. It has a few features that make it a breeze to install and use, and it’s pretty close to the cutting edge, yet it tends to have very few problems, and when a problem does arise, it also tends to get quickly fixed. Most of the systems supported on this one are newer and faster than what we use, and yet it’s also very high quality. The kernels available range from 5.15 to the newest 6.1.8 kernel.
