Many Windoze users are presently fighting loss of the whole menu and taskbar due a faulty update intended to reduce attack surface.

Highly effective strategy, make the computer near as possible to unusable..

      https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-defender-for-endpoint/recovering-from-attack-surface-reduction-rule-shortcut-deletions/ba-p/3716011

Manual recreation of shortcuts after fresh update will reportedly fix the issue.

Better is install antiX or MX if not done already :-).

Not clear that Linux is used. Microsoft Surface tablets have been used as have several wireless communication.

It does look like something else that Linux *could influence!

          Hello everybody.

          Feel free to comment.

I’d like to start by thanking the creator and leader of antiX Linux for always wanting to listen. On how many GNU/Linux distributions does the leader or leaders ask the community’s opinion?

PPC’s FT10 transformation package is excellent.
It achieves its aim of making antiX more ‘modern’ and ‘familiar’ particularly to those used to Windows 10.

This is an undeniable fact, when an end user new to antiX does not immediately adapt to the various “aesthetic” and “behavioral” options available in antiX, FT10 fulfills its main objective is to make the antiX something “modern” and “familiar”. For those people who only know Windows, as if this operating system only existed on planet Earth, FT10 “cushions” the impact of the transition from a slow operating system to a fast and stable operating system that is antiX Linux.

It’s not my ‘cup of tea’ though and I would remove it instantly.

I think this anticapitalista quote reflects reality very well for most experienced antiX users or active users of this forum. That is, being in antiX or not, it won’t make any difference to us.

So should future antiX default to Ft10 or keep its current set up?

I don’t know if the information was lost in automatic translation, but I would like the anticapitalist to make it very clear to all people which antiX ISO (or which antiX ISOs) it intends to use FT10 as the default on boot. Without this information, we will see people using core or net ISOs saying that they don’t want FT10, and for these ISOs and for these users, FT10 doesn’t make any difference, because they build antiX from the “black screen” from Terminal.

I assume that the intention is to use the full antiX ISO, if that is the intention, I fully agree that the FT10 is available in the menu to be activated or not by the end user. This way we prevent some people from complaining in this thread or the other antiX-23 – based on Debian 12 Bookworm – ideas that ROX-IceWM is no longer the default. But the people who “complain” know very well how to change the window manager or window manager + file manager combination, with two clicks or a command in Terminal.

We have to think about the following situation, either the community grows or it inevitably ends. If there are no new antiX users, inevitably the experienced antiX users will one day die, as this is the only certainty we have in life. Simply put, we can’t get away from it…

Even after the detailed explanations of PPC in several threads and including here about the FT10, I still see some people looking at themselves and not the other. Or that you have never used the FT10, but have your opinion ready and then say “no”.

While the majority of active people on the forum have learned something new since they started using antiX, unfortunately, there are people who are unwilling or unwilling to learn something new (whether due to lack of free time, lack of interest or laziness ). Much of this is what I call “the consequences of the comfort zone created by Microsoft”, the user becomes dependent (on the operating system), but doesn’t even realize it and anything different becomes a “trauma”. If a toolbar, two first-level menu options, two-click Recycle Bin settings, and various other programs that complete FT10 can increase the number of antiX users, I’d vote “yes” for the full ISO of antiX (at least it’s available in the options menu). The full ISO size won’t get huge because of the FT10, in case that’s anyone’s concern.

As I already wrote some time ago, I am an antiX Linux multiplier here in Brazil. Every now and then we have a new Brazilian participant here on the forum, most of them are monoglots, just like I am. antiX increasingly translated to pt-BR and FT10 make an excellent impression in the eyes of people who receive antiX from the installations that I do on their computers.

What Madibi wrote is very similar to what happens here in Brazil, if the patterns and themes available in antiX don’t “please” the end user’s eyes, certainly FT10 will and I see that happening here frequently.

Before being against FT10, I suggest you do a test on a LiveUSB without persistence, put yourself in the shoes of a novice user who has never seen antiX before and who is seeing antiX for the first time with FT10.

Note: I do not consider any of the antiX users actively participating here in this forum to be end users.

Anticapitalista, I thank you for allowing us to express our opinions and suggestions.

          Olá a todos.

          Feel free to comment.

PPC’s FT10 transformation package is excellent.
It achieves its aim of making antiX more ‘modern’ and ‘familiar’ particularly to those used to Windows 10.

It’s not my ‘cup of tea’ though and I would remove it instantly.

So should future antiX default to Ft10 or keep its current set up?

Hi Lead Farmer! I have a much different orientation because I grew up in the days before Microsoft started to produce consumer software. Therefore in most of my high school and college years I used either mini computer or mainframe systems, and none of them in the seventies were truly geared to “at home” consumers; even the easiest software was still aimed at either computer professionals or trained business users.

The eighties did BEGIN the move toward consumer oriented software, but it was only the late eighties and early nineties that easy to use programs and systems were deliberately built. I took a great deal of personal interest in promoting and advocating easy to use defaults for all programs and systems, except those used ONLY by professionals who without question wanted power and features over simplicity.

By the time that personal computers and hand held devices became easy to use, affordable and readily available, usability HAS become much more readily available, but now we have a much DIFFERENT issue: the majority of people are SO enamored with their devices, games, tools, and entertainment that some people (too many of them, thankfully NOT everyone) uses electronic devices more often than they interact with people.

Though I’ve always used a LOT of electronics, I make it a daily goal to turn them off and/or put them away, and definitely so if a person approaches me or speaks to me.

There is a balance. I encourage all of us to use technology in effective, useful ways, but PLEASE make and keep the relationships around you the number one priority. People DO build these things, but people have brains, lives, feelings, and needs; let’s not forget any of this, especially during holidays when people have traditionally gathered, whether expressing their faith or simply because they care for others. I urge everyone to remember this; technology is valuable and important, but it is still nothing more than a tool; living, breathing animals and people in particular are always infinitely more important!

            Holiday greetings to all!

My understanding (summarising the thread) so far:

              1) By release: A) unstable=sid B) testing C) stable D) old-stable E) old-old-stable
              2) Repository “source”: A) main B) contrib C) non-free
              3) Any stable release has ‘backports’ from testing.
              4) Security
              5) Additional repositories that may or may not be available for the different releases (mentioned in item 1)) such as ‘multimedia’ or Microsoft repository (for stable only), to be used with care.

              Not quite sure myself…

As @ile mentioned, ‘systemd’ is kept out of antiX using modification of the sources.
The antiX way is apt-pinning (assigning priority to a package or a repository; negative values prevent installation), see directory ‘/etc/apt/preferences.d/’.

Ouch but somewhat expected, for those who do not know the parent company of Red Hat is IBM.
Sales of licences are down so users shall be coerced in to buying new machines.

@olstyn memory is max at 512 as below spec from link in first post shows.

                  Software and Memory
The Toughbook CF-28 operates on a Microsoft Windows XP or 2000 platform using a low-voltage,
Mobile Intel Pentium III M-Processor in either 1GHz or 800MHz. It includes a 30GB hard drive and
256MB of SDRAM memory that can be expanded up to 512MB. The 1.44MB floppy disk drive holds 3.5-inch
floppy disks and also accepts the optional DVD-ROM/CD-RW combination drive.

Bring it to meetings as a historic (gimmick) device sounds interesting. Hope you are succesful, my

Its funny how “evil” chrome works flawlessly with ALSA but “benevolent” Firefox requires “evil” pulseaudio for sound.

One of the most interesting observations of nowadays reality… Something that was considered as oxymoron in the past, such as ‘democratic totalitarian government’ became a norm of our Western World…
It is only a matter of degree whether Firefox is more evil than Chrome or vice versa. Between both they have divided 90% of users. About just 90, because we should give some share of users for Microsoft browser too… Any competition still alive?..
Has the time come yet for the final battle for total control of the user world?

Sometimes I use a Linux kernel on a system that’s barely recognizable as anything RELATED to Linux – the Google infrastructure and the Chromebook.

I’m well aware that even the mention of “Google”, “Microsoft”, or “Apple” gets some people going. Not too long ago, I found a group of UNIX enthusiasts who enjoy the Next derivatives of UNIX – translate that to the commercial BSD/Next/Apple proprietary infrastructure behind one of the most profitable corporations, the one that Steve Jobs conceived and turned into a UNIX-like system with a complex, but still usable and popular interface; whether Mac OS X or iOS, today it’s arguably the most PROFITABLE computer company. Anyway, my positive comments about Linux and some criticism of anything Apple resulted in an all out assault on anything I said; I quickly closed my account in that location and have not returned.

I’m not planning to do that here, but all I would like to interject is this: when we talk about “software freedom”, it’s my opinion that true freedom allows each of us to use whatever we choose: that is, if we want to (or have to, in order to have a job) use Microsoft or Apple products, those are two of the many choices, so is the choice to use large commercial mainframe systems, small proprietary interactive or real time systems, or Linux, or some other choice not mentioned here; being one to choose “freedom” with that kind of a definition, I definitely enjoy using our antiX, and over the course of a long week, it’s probably the

                        most common

thing I use on my computers, but I DO also use Chromebook computers, Android phones and occasionally other proprietary systems, and many other freely available Linux systems. I’m a true advocate of choice in that kind of a way; each choice has it’s own advantages and disadvantages and each is a personal choice.

I have tried the suggestions xecure gave in https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/i-cant-get-any-bluetooth-device-to-pair-with-my-pc/#post-49552 and I can get the headset to pair, but I notice that the bluetooth manager does not think its an audio device, and the pulse audio volume control doesn’t see it at all.

If anyone else has gotten this to work, could you please provide a list of what you installed and what needed to be configured? This machine was originally installed as antiX 21 64 bit full, and is up to date with the 4.9 kernel, but I didn’t have any better luck with antiX 22 64 bit full with the 5.10 kernel, and it didn’t work with MX 21 Fluxbox, either.

I spent another day trying, and thus far it has only worked with Win/10 and my android phone. It almost works with Slackel, but that OS can’t connect to the Internet after its installed. I have been avoiding trying Debian and Ubuntu due to their systemd.

Olá Brasileiros do fórum do antiX.

                            Dear Seaken64,

                            Thanks for your information.

On the Microsoft 600 keyboard, the calculator key is considered an independent key. It is not linked to the numeric keypad, you don’t have to activate the NumLock key to activate the calculator key.

On my Dell Latitude 5590 laptop, the calculator key is also independent.

                            Best regards,
                            Wallon

Comparing Linux and Windows in 2022

Mr Brian, I think the main difference between some GNU/Linux and Windows that was not covered in the article is that with some specific operating systems, such as antiX, TinyCore, SliTaz, Puppy Linux and other few distribution options, allow computers that are considered junk by Microsoft to be used in full and are not junk.

                              – – – – –

Comparing Linux and Windows in 2022

                                Dear PPC,

I am shocked. Have you never seen a keyboard with a calculator key?
Everyone who works with numbers needs that key.
I use Microsoft Wired Keyboard 600 sold since 2014 for 15€ for my desktop. Please click on the screenshot.
My Dell Latidude 5590 laptop also has a calculator key.

I know that gamers do not need this key …
                                No, but seriously!

                                Kind regards,
                                Wallon

it will not offer to save to those MS Office formats, just to the older .doc, .xls., .ppt. It also does not seem able to open a PDF in OpenOffice Draw, not like LibreOffice can.

Probably because those features were added to LO after it was forked from OOo. Consider OOo like a slightly underpowered (and also slightly less resource hungry) version of LO – it runs better on older machines, but also allows users to do less with it- if you have no need for compatibility with closed file formats (the ones from Microsoft), don’t need psd editing features, etc AND don’t dislike the “older UI” OOo offers, then it’s perfectly usable. You can also use it to work on a office file on older devices, and then open that file on LO and convert it to .docx, etc…
I find that there are no really good fully working office suites for underpowered computers- but OOo runs a little better on my netbook than LO… I find OOo’s .appimage file great!

                                  P.
