I’m using my packagecomp to build a antiX 19.2 runit 386 version just for fun. If it goes well I should be done by supper. If not, well… You know…

I’ll build another one too just for fun.

I do already have a runit version installed and a regular full version, but this’ll be good practice.

This tine I’ll build a full runit based version using the 19.2 release, but I won’t do dwm, I’ll use one of the main window managers
and mainly experiment with persistence or rebuilding directly from the snapped image; whatever I can figure out.

So I used my packagecomp and aptik to migrate my tweaks to a fresh flashdrive (really a fast USB SSD), and then used the persistence and remastering to make it into a bootable system which I think will also install, etc. It’s oriented to IceWM, but the other desktops are still available. Here are a few screenshots. I got things like Window driven Helpnotes and my wallpaper modifier working, and only rarely use the menus because the programs I use often are all on the toolbar, which autohides out of the way until you mouse to the bottom of the screen or press a key like Ctrl+Esc to bring up the menu. I only created a 64 bit system at this point. If there is any interest, I’ll figure out how to make an ISO of it and post it. I’m running it from flashdrive only at the moment.

Packagecomp is a utility I’ve been using to help get the same or similar packages that I had on one system over to a new freshly installed system. I use it in combination with aptik-gtk (available from MX repos) to migrate systems. You have to go down the list of differences to decide what to install on the new system or not, but at least this way you have a list to work from. I recently added the ability to redo the choosing and installing part as many times as you like, and each time it makes you a fresh list of what is missing.

Thanks to others, like skidoo and dave and bitjam and others for ideas and code…

What is next? I’m running pretty well on 19 (full 64 bit, tweaked). My packagecomp scripts worked real well for the 17 to 19 migration, especially after I got almost all my mods out of the standard libraries. My mods are less of mods and more in the nature of tweaks to suit my preferences, but it’s a pleasure for me to use as a result.

I’ve been working a lot lately, and had to devote my best laptop to Win/10. What a misery of an OS. It spends forever nagging me and updating who knows what for no apparent purpose other than to infuriate me.

So I’ve been pretty much forced to do my antiX playing, tweaking and testing on my #2 laptop or the older ones. I’ve done real well making a snapshot and burning an ISO of it, and then installing it on other machines. Next I would like to figure out a way, maybe with github or the like, to save and distribute my setup changes without needing to reinstall on the other machines. Also need to try the “diversion” trick on the one antiX program I have that is changed.

I wish I had the newest IceWM if its running well, but not sure if the icon issues (or other problems) anti hit have been fixed or not. Thinking about trying to add the disk space monitors myself, but not being a real C programmer it would be an amazing feat and possibly a terrible kludge if I did it by copying the battery monitor code or network monitor code.

How about everyone else? It’s been very quiet around here…

Ok, different people have different ways to do things.

For /home, my method is to
                1. back up /home just in case.
                2. clean up /home.
                3. use aptik-gtk to save /home, users and groups
                4. install new system
                5. install all missing packages
                6. use aptik-gtk to restore /home, users and groups
                7. overlay changed things outside of /home

If you search for a thread with packagecomp (and a zip file of it), zip file here it includes the scripts I used and instructions. I have used it for antiX 17 and 19, both 386 and x64, and should work for other Debian based distros. Skidoo, Dave and BitJam (possibly others too, my memory is faded) provided the ideas and/or code behind it back then. It has the same basis as skidoo’s script because if I recall, that was one of his ideas back then. I used it last weekend on this machine. It isn’t perfect. You have to review the list and decide things to not install. There is a readme file included.

My pkgs.add file format is pretty normal, one package per line, like below:

                acpitail
                acpitool
                adobe-flash-properties-gtk
                adobe-flashplugin
                antix-snapshot-gui
                apt-file
                apt-xapian-index
                aptitude
                aptitude-common

Serenity, Sorry, I forget if you are a techie or normal user. I get the impression noman01 is wanting to learn and we are all trying to coach a way to do that with the least pain for max gain.

I’m a techie, not a Linux techie, but to me a computer is a computer. I am both willing and HAVE sat here literally for as long as it took to adjust, tweak and customize whatever I wanted things to be.

On my main system, I did a fresh install with antiX-19a1-full-x64, then “migrated” my 17.4.1 system to it when my old HP laptop died, and have been doing “sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade” almost nightly since then.

The super safe, reliable and supportable path is just to install and copy in your “stuff” from your previous system, but that doesn’t mean its the only choice.

I will probably migrate my main system this weekend myself, by cleaning up my /home, making sure I have all my non /home modifications cleanly organized in a folder off /home, then backing up the whole filesystem via iso-snapshot, then burning it to a flashdrive as a backup, and then doing my aptik packagecomp routine to save, and then a fresh install ON A DIFFERENT MACHINE, followed by a packagecomp selective install of most missing packages, and then an overlay from the /home aptik backup, and a resync of my non /home modifications. I will do that just to have a known “clean” antiX-19 system with my specific modifications from that point forward ON THAT OTHER MACHINE. I hope that I will be happy I did that. I will test it on my spare laptop till its a waste of time, and THEN migrate the result back to my main machine by making a 2nd snapshot of the new system and burning it as well, giving me 2 levels of backups if I get in trouble later…

Can you tell that I’ve goofed it up before? I try to learn from my mistakes each time, so the next one is a little better…

Manyroads, my packagecomp and aptik are working well for migrating. You can search for my post with the code. I used it to migrate from 17 to 19.

I used it again last night to restore onto antiX19b2 successfully. I made a to-do list of the save/install/restore/reimplement sequence…

PS: This was done between 2 completely different 64 bit machines, an old HP with AMD Turion-X2 to a recent Dell XPS-15 with an I7. I never have tried it from 64 bit to 32 bit.

                      Old system antiX selective save
                      menu, terminal…
                      cd ~/packagecomp
                      ./pkgs1.mod.sh

make sure all of your non /home changes are saved in a folder named ~/changes and then in sub folders named as they would be from / so they are included in the save to be reimplemented after restore

run aptik-gtk to save users, groups and /home/bobc to folder under /home/tmp
                      copy aptik*.deb to /home/tmp

                      New system antiX load sequence

                      – boot from flashdrive, use EFI if EFI system, add any boot parms needed, like toram for fast system loading

                      – menu, control centre, sessions, screen resolution, set default layout, apply, save to ~/.screenlayout/default.screenlayout.sh, close arandr

                      – control centre, network, wifi connect, connect to wifi

                      – control centre, disks, partition a drive

find or create a partition to load to, write down root / device name – sda4
create a swap partition same size as memory and label it hiberXX, write down device name – sdb10

                      – antiX installer

                      default keyboard
                      default custom partition
                      select root / partition
                      select swap partition

grub options, select Esp if EFI System, select drive and root / device name

go through rest of install, save desktop changes

if grub errors, unselect reboot when finished snd go to cotrol centre, maintenance, boot repair, and run that before rebooting

                      reboot, remove flashdrive

login, F1 before loggong in and change to space-icewm

                      – menu, run, spacefm, select run as root

                      make drives mount…
                      devices, click show devices
devices, settings, device handlers, click default, maximize, in top mount section click run in terminal, take out # in front of udisksctl mount -b %v -o ‘%o’ click ok
change to show hidden files and all columns…
right click in file area, click view, click hidden files so it is selected
right click in file area, click view, columns, make sure all are selected

                      left double click /home
right click bobc, new, archive to create save copy of home dir as installed in /home/bobc.tar.gz
open old partition, copy in /home/tmp from old system into /home

                      need to install aptik-gtk
                      – menu, terminal,

                      sudo apt-get update
                      sudo apt-get upgrade

                      sudo apt-get install aptitude libgee-0.8-2 dconf-cli

                      cd /home/tmp
                      sudo apt install ./aptik-v18.8-amd64.deb
                      sudo apt install ./aptik-gtk-v18.8-amd64.deb

now restore /home/bobc with aptik-gtk via run command as root

                      back to terminal…
                      cd ~/packagecomp
                      ./pkgs2.std.sh

When editing list, need to remove:
                      aptik
                      aptik-gtk
                      udev
…others you find out, generally remove any antix packages

now run the install script copied from the screen (it can’t be pasted here correctly)
                      bobc@xps15:~/packagecomp
                      $ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y install $(awk ‘{print $1}’ pkgs.add.2019-07-30T145442.list)

Now sort out any antix changes affecting /home and redo any changes outside of /home

I erased the HD on the old Dell D620 and started fresh with a 9 gb antiX boot, 4 gb swap, 30 gb for isofiles, and 100 gb for persistence.
I loaded and installed antiX-17.3.1_x64-full, then used my packagecomp and added all my packages, and installed aptik and aptik-gtk.

Note that I didn’t restore my home stuff or my changes yet, so the system is pretty clean at this point.

Next I will restore my /home and then make another snapshot, and then create a live USB of it, do a frugal install of it with persist_all, and then I will try to overlay my changes…

So, a procedure to save and restore to a different machine
                          1. save all non /home/yourself changes in a directory structure ~/changes-hostname-yymmdd with each file in the relative folder underneath where it was added or change with all the attributes it had as well. if the file is literally machine dependent, make a 2nd copy of the file suffixed by the hostname so you don’t forget
                          2. don’t load things that are difficult to reload, at minimum, if no .deb, forget it if possible
                          3. limit what you put in /home. put downloaded data file stuff somewhere else and back it up/restore it separately
                          4. run the packagecomp #1 modified pc script (pkgs1.mod.sh) on the machine being saved to make a list of what was installed
                          5. get the aptik .debs and install them to do the saves. save to a place outside of your own /home because you want it to backup your /home. I just save users, groups, and /home with it. I take the folder and copy it to the live-usb folder on a freshly made and tested antiX flashdrive, as well as the aptik .deb files and packagecomp folder
                          6. load the new machine, connect to the net, install antiX saving live changes. make sure you have all the live usb stuff copied off the flashdrive to somewhere outside of your /home, and then you can reboot into the stock antiX system and make sure its ok before loading all your changes.
                          7. run the packagecomp #2 standard pc script (pkgs2.std.sh) on the freshly installed machine to find out what packages need to be added. When the editor comes up, remove things you don’t need. The script will make a list for you of what you decided to skip, just in case.
                          8. run the apt-get update and apt-get install with command line provided
                          9. use apt to install the aptik .debs
                          10. run aptik-gtk from the run box as root
                          11. restore only the things saved above
                          12. overlay the changes from your ~/changes-hostname-yymmdd which got restored by aptik
                          13. update-grub
                          14. reboot, and hopefully welcome to a totally familiar system with everything just as you left it, but running on a shiny new system (LOL, or old clunker for the kids)

It took about 3 hours to do, not bad for a modified system.

I added a zip file of the scripts

I finally did a build up from core, I used IceWM and roaming WiFi. I did it on the old Dell D620. I should be able to get memory used to about 65.0 mb. I’m at 71.0 mb now, but that’s using Xterm and 5 getty sessions, no Conky, no Background. I just wanted to see if I could get it to work…

I didn’t have major problems. The worst problem was getting X to run when not root, needing to add 2 lines to /etc/X11/Xrapper.config.

                            allowed_users=console
                            needs_root_rights=yes

I will see if I can get the history and a memory readout next time I bring up the browser. I suppose its not totally realistic with no conky or screensaver, but it was quite an adventure to get it loaded and get X windows to come up and work.

                            =================================

So what did I install on top of core? I use a program called comm to compare the antix install list to a current list, and what wasn’t there in core is listed here. My notes say I should (ie untested at this point) be able to process add list onto a core install with:
                            xargs -a pkgschgd.add.txt apt-get install`

Too bad I haven’t been able to figure out how to port ksnakeduel to a non-kde environment. It really brought a lot in with it. But I like playing it, oh well.

Menus are working, but many programs aren’t on them. Haven’t investigated that, yet.

I don’t like the standard theme, wish I had my rollup shade windows, oh well.

Anyway, for one evening’s work I did fairly well…

Anyone know a way to take this list and remove from it all the packages required by any other on the list?
