@yuzeff: By any chance, could *you* be one of those “human genius” hardware experts who brought us such high quality technology?

We have much FASTER equipment today, but the desktops and laptops from the last two decades of the previous century were much more rugged and mechanically superior to the fast, but cheap plastic stuff we typically deal with on all but the very high end, expensive equipment.

The unit I’m using right now was previously owned by my younger, but much more affluent brother in law, who is an emergency room physician. He was going to get rid of three old computers that were apparently sitting in storage. When he moved a couple of years ago, he asked me if I could make use of any of them; I took all three off his hands and use them as experimental systems to get out distributions that work well with older hardware, like our “favorite”: antiX!

The second is also connected to apparmor. How do i fix it? My system is

          ——————————————-

The “antiX installation and configuration guide” has been updated from the antiX-19 version to the antiX-21 version.

You can download it from here:
antiX installation and configuration guide in .pdf
antiX installation and configuration guide in .odt
The installation and configuration guide is designed to walk users, especially new users, to successfully install the operating system and to get an idea of the tools that allow system customization.
It also gives directions to avoid running into some frequent problems and where to find useful documentation to overcome any non-trivial difficulties.
The in-depth details of the configuration and the resolution of complex problems are contained in the “antiX User Manual” while in the wiki-Faq (in Italian here, while in English here and here) you can find useful guides for an extensive management of this system operating.

In version 21 of the guide, a lot of space was dedicated to the Gazzelle installer which has undergone major changes since antiX 19.5.
Then I developed a section of the guide that explains how to create and manage persistence on a USB stick.

An English translation of this guide will be published as soon as possible.
After the English version I will start working to update the Italian user manual from 19 to 21 version, and when it is complete I will try to translate it into English. It will take a few months, my free time is short.

            Belated reply/question.

I am running Sid based on antiX-19. Interested in removing unnecessary software – especially stuff related to systemd.

So I just installed seatd and libseat1 (antiX versions) and then ran a simulated purge of libelogind0.

This not only would remove elogind, libelogind0 and libpam-elogind, but a a bunch of pipewire packages and 2 libapt packages.

So, apparently unlike VLC, pipewire (and I assume pulseaudio) are dependent upon libelogind0.

I did see one poster on Reddit saying that using pam_rundir allowed him/her to successfully run Pipewire without elogind. But, at least for tonight, it seems way above my linux paygrade.

Parentheticallty, I am really enjoying listening to music on my usb headphones thru Pipewire (version 0.3.51-1) on this old laptop.

@caprea, yes it worked to reply to christophe.

@christophe, it worked. Maybe it was unique to that one message. I will try sending a new message to the user in question.

              Thanks for helping,

Edit: I was able to send a “New” message to the user. Apparently the issue was with that one thread exchange only. At least until I try to reply. Hopefully it was just an anomaly.

MXDE is MX based, other than the optional antiX kernels that MX provides through MXPI it’s apparently not wise to mix antiX and MX Repos so the antiX repos are not included or enabled by default.

I repeated the sequence, making sure that I mounted sda2 with ROX-as-root gui. I was able to edit the text file displayed in ROX (as root from terminal), but there was an error message in terminal:

                  root@antix1:/media/sda2# rox Index
root@antix1:/media/sda2# head: cannot open '/root/.desktop-session/desktop-code.' for reading: No such file or directory

There’s the error message when I mount sda2 with rox-as-root gui. What does it mean? Apparently, ROX expects to find home/demo hidden files in /root, but those hidden files are not in /root. (When I mount sda2 with plain rox gui, then run the sequence of commands, I get a scanning error, can’t stat directory.)

When I tried to open text file displayed in ROX-as-root, there was no response to my mouse-click, and ROX showed no log of the action.

I recently noticed that lxterminal stopped launching. An error message stated that it was missing libicuuc.so.67. I checked and libicuuc.so.71 was installed, but not libicuuc.so.67.

Apparently,libicu67 was uninstalled on 23 April when libicu71 was installed.

After manually installing libicu67, lxterminal launches ok.

For anyone running Sid who gets this problem.

                    stevesr0

P.S. I assume that having both versions of libicu installed is not going to cause a problem. I will post a follow up if one occurs <g>.
P.P.S. I assume that an update of lxterminal may require libicu71. If that happens, I guess I can uninstall libicu67 (there may be a message that libicu67 is no longer needed).
P.P.S. Not obviously related to libvte (see post#71147).

Yeah I had to enable persistence in Rufus (apparently it’s necessary in newer versions of it) and things are working now.

I performed a second remaster, a Personal remaster, but the desktop shortcuts, disable Conky, and systray Connman were not implemented, and I lost bookmarks as well.

You have to re-do those settings, because they were lost when you did a general remaster.

Do a personal remaster always, unless you have a good reason not to. 😉

(Something for you to experiment with much later: Lately, I use ONLY /home persistence. It’s just personal taste. I say that only to keep your mind open to further experimentation, down the line.)

BTW, what is the difference between home and Demo?

You’ve conflated some things here apparently. That’s OK. Just forget about that — keep doing what you are doing. Play with it & ask questions.

Bottom line so far: You are doing well with persist_root or p_static_root, but do personal remaster (saves personal settings).

                        confirmed antiX frugaler, since 2019

                          Hi!

I have an update on the programs that wouldn’t work after the update. I tried to purge VLC as suggested, and was told it wasn’t installed. When I tried to install it through Synaptic (the box to check was empty), it led me to believe there were dependencies that weren’t satisfied. So I think if I just wait, the problem will resolve itself.

On the KOrganizer issue, I Googled the error message that I received. Apparently it is fairly common. I was advised on several sites to basically delete the user data files. When I did that, I lost all of my calendar entries, but the program now opens properly and I have reentered my calendar entries.

BTW, I would love to use Google Calendar, but the internet is erratic at best out here. Not many Amish use the Internet, so there is not much of a demand for high speed. lol

If the updating error message I received regrading heldback packages is an issue, please let me know and what you would do to correct it. I would be grateful. Thank you!

After just one full day of resting from scripting FT10 stuff, when taking a read of forum entries to make sure no important topic escaped my attention this last week, I noticed some thing important: this last couple of years I seems to notice that the percentage of people asking for help here in the forum, due to problems directly related to antiX apparently decreased – some posts are because users failed to burn the iso correctly to the bootable media; enabled repos they should not have enabled; are trying to install/run antiX on very esoteric and rare hardware; want help installing other OS’s other than antiX Linux, etc… One forum user even (quite randomly) though this would be the ideal place to ask for help getting a closed source software that is (probably on most regions of the world) illegal to share…
…Why is that? I would bet that antiX not only has the reputation of running on “any hardware, including your toaster”, but the community has the reputation of being very welcoming and not just pointing to RTFM… antiX is easier to use than ever, and the documentation available on the Wiki or on the forum it self is so good that it seems that users no longer need to ask very basic questions (like- how to I change the background? How do I turn wi-fi on? How do I add icons to the desktop or to the toolbar?)

I even had a “What the…???” moment when I read a recent distrowatch “reviewer” complaining that antiX was too “bloated” with antiX apps! Hum… That person could have tried antiX core or net… antiX currently has so many choices that probably anything an ordinary user wants to do was already implemented and there’s an “how to” about it here in the forum…

PS: Trying to play Devil’s advocate, according to some points of view, antiX full could be considered “bloated”- this comes with 4 window managers, 3 web browsers (firefox-esr, links2, dillo), 3 File Managers (Rox filer, zzzfm, Midnight Commander), 2 GUI text editors (geany and leafpad), 2 different pdf readers… It includes a script to mount android devices (that could be bloat for you, if you don’t have any such device)… it includes DOSbox (“bloat” if you don’t need to run old DOS programs/games- but it makes perfect sense, if you think that this is an OS meant to run on old devices- and that users of such devices may rely on software that is from the good old DOS days)
… but all that fits on less than 1.5 gb… much less space than most full blown Operating Systems… I consider antiX offers choices, not “bloat”, and that’s why once you see trough antiX’s different way of doing things, you get that it all fits together (almost) perfectly, like pieces of a giant jigsaw!

                            P.

I finally was able to devote some time to this touchpad problem, the past 2 evenings. I learned that:

                              1) Disconnecting the coin battery overnight DID wipe the BIOS (the date & time needed to be reset), but the Admin password was still set. It must be stored elsewhere, off the BIOS chip; probably, in magnetic storage which doesn’t require current to maintain it.

Note, that this DID work in the Precision laptop, and I was able to deactivate the touchpad from within the BIOS. So far, no problems.

                              2) The BIOS “Lock” function in the Latitude prevents use of F9 & Alt-F.

                              3) I tried the Admin password “0sNc0b3Gz0upifS5”, but it didn’t work.

                              4) I have a Win XP HE installation disk, but this machine won’t boot off that in the optical drive; neither as BIOS boot priority, nor as F12 menu selection.

                              4) I created a bootable FREEDOS USB using “Rufus”, and then downloaded “DEBUGX” from the internet. I copied DEBUGX onto the FREEDOS USB. Rebooting into FREEDOS, I ran DEBUGX, and typed in the 3 commands.
                              -o 70 10
                              -o 71 ff
                              -q

There were no apparent problems or errors… But, rebooting the Latitude machine, I found the touchpad was still active in both Win10 pro & in AntiX v19.4. TYPING IN CODE DIDN’T WORK.

                              ————————-

I saw a utility in Plasma Desktop, which seemed to claim that it could deactivate the touchpad entirely – but, this was in the middle of problems with a failing hard drive, and experimentation with different Linux OS’s, so I’m not sure whether this was found via Linux Mint, AntiX, or something else.
(Yes, I’ve replaced the hard drive in my Precision machine, and have set up a dual-boot using Win10p & Antix v21.4. So far, so good… with only 1 major glitch.) I’m not sure if I can easily track that touchpad deactivation utility down again. OR, if it can be ported out for use in AntiX.

                              ————————–

At the moment, it seems as if my only remaining option is to do some laptop surgery on the Latitude, and physically disconnect the touchpad’s power & data cable connector from the board.

He notes that rtkit is listed as ?recommended for VLC, but that it isn’t apparently needed for VLC to install and work.

Just to make more clear what I actually was saying:
                                – rtkit appears to be a recommend for pulseaudio and it appears to be installed during installation of pulseaudio. I did not test if it is just Synaptic installs recommends in general for installs of apps, or in general Debian does this by default.
                                – rtkit suddenly (first time noticed yesterday) appears to be responsible for installation of libelogind0 alongside yesterday’s upgrade. Libelogind0 goes against recent antiX strategy of eliminating elogind0 and libelogind0. Seatd and libseat1 are supposed to perform this function now and were among those upgraded yesterday.
                                – Vlc appears by default to install libelogind0, which again goes against the above mentioned strategy, but I think I remember anticapitalista was making modifications to apps that request libelogind0 installation for no reason, however I am not sure if vlc was one of such. If vlc was not modified then installation of vlc might result in installation of libelogind0. I do not know if vlc requires rtkit though.
                                – Although antiX strategy has been no libelogind0 or elogind, which are about the same as systemd, just without the init part, antiX users still the option of letting libelogind0 installs if some needed package still insists on it. I do not recall if anticapitalista said no to this…

So hopefully the above clarifies yesterday’s observation…
