Just another thing – minor and cosmetic (nothing material) – about Herbstluftwm, which I reported in Herbstluftwm thread and which apparently got carried over to B2:

      – If I select Herbstluftwh from ‘Other desktops’ it gives me Herbstluftwm desktop with the following tags: 1,2,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. I have effectively 11 tags. Previously the first two were not numbered (blank) and subsequent numbered (1-6).
      – If I select Herbstluftwm through F1 after prior logoff, I get Herbstluftwm with the expected tag numbers 1-9. No additional 1,2 in front.
      – After logoff from Herbstluftwm (Windows key + Shift + q) I get the expected login screen with sessiontype:icewm (default) showing on top . However after login from here I get logged in to Herbstluftwm, not IceWM as indicated on the login screen. If I F1 cycle on the login screen, making a round trip through selections back to IceWM and log in, then I get logged in to IceWM as indicated on the login screen.
Just to mention, I am using Default slimski theme, not tested this with multiple slimski themes…

Just to stress again, these are cosmetic and not material. They have no impact at all since I know what the behavior is, so I know what to do in order to arrive at desired desktop. Therefore it is not any priority to pay attention to, in comparison…

We have a “Live USB Maker”; for our distribution, it will allow you to use many of the features that distinguish our distribution; it can also create a Live USB for other distributions using the standard dd utility. We do not recommend other tools, so I agree with anticapitalista. Anything you may have seen regarding Rufus or other tools either were not on this site, or if they have been mentioned, they certainly were NOT an official recommendation. Other tools such as that one can (and apparently DO) things that we do NOT support or endorse in any way.

          Thank you…
Question: Where is that place in your wallpaper? Bavaria some place?

Apparently it’s from Lake Bled, Slovenia. I got it from unsplash – they have tons of really nice looking and freely licensed wallpapers there: https://unsplash.com/photos/XGDBdSQ70O0

Photographer is Artem Sapegin. Nice shot.

            1. The fix apparently created a file named resolv.conf (in red letters) in my “jim” sub-directory. The icon is a yellow disk with a large exclamation mark in it.
Do I need to keep this file?

This shouldn’t have happened. Probably something was not properly written when running the command. You can remove that file.

            2. Do you know when there will be an update to completely resolve this problem. In the meantime, will future updates cause this problem to return.

The latest update is the last, and replaces the other update to work exactly as the original connman. Nothing more should break at all.

              You have 2 options:
              1. Keep using connman to manage resolv.conf -> remove /etc/default/connman
              sudo rm /etc/default/connman

              2. Let resolvconf manage it:

              sudo rm /etc/resolv.conf
              sudo ln -s /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

Then reboot and it should work again. Option 2 is the preferred option, to make it easier to change between connman/ceni in the future (if needed). But option 1 is to keep things as they were until now.

I followed the second option, although I thought it failed because of a message I received after running the second command I rebooted anyway as you said, and it worked. Thank you.

Thank you all for your comments. I did get the problem resolved. Here is what I did.

I have three KDE games installed: Checkers, Mahjongg, and Solitaire. I had tried to edit the /desktop file for Solitaire earlier and when I tried to save I got a response that the file was large and would be truncated if I saved it and may not work. So this time, after reading all your comments I clicked on each one from the desktop and found that Checkers worked, but the other two did not. I then examined all three /desktop files by opening each one as text. I found that the two files that did not work were over 100 lines (apparently for foreign language support), but the one for Checkers had only about 12 lines and it did not not include qwindowtitle on the exec line like the other two files. So I copied the 12 lines into an editor and created two files changing the program and icon references to Mahjongg and Solittaire and saved them to my Desktop folder. Finally, I dragged them to the desktop and tested them. They both worked. I am now a happy camper.

Hi. So, I usually communicate with my music friends on a messaging app called Discord, which most of us should know what it is of course.

Anyway, I’m not sure how to install it. I would think that the DEB file would be the safe bet, but no dice apparently.
                  Can anybody please help?

                  Sincerely,
                  Chase E.

                    Hi all,

The newest update to connman (a reversion as promised by anticapitalista) did, as expected, shut off DNS access. However, once again, deleting the /etc/resolv.conf file and setting up a symbolic link from the /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf file to /etc/resolv.conf reestablished the connection.

(I first killed connman, since I have wanted to make sure that wifi connections were working with wicd.)

So, at this point, I am wondering – will future upgrades to connman will routinely mess up internet connections?

Parenthetically, on reboot I note that all remains well – and that BOTH connman and wicd appear active without an apparent conflict. Somehow that surprises me <g>.

Thank you for the kind words.

Actually, I got it working again. Turning off the LAN cable connection seemed to help. Then I was faced with I was connected to the router but not the internet, although ping gave the correct results. I found something about this in another forum and tried a suggestion from Xecure. In entered the two commands, and although the second line cam back with an apparent error, I rebooted anyway as suggested, and when I logged back on it was fixed.

I am not going to make anymore changes for now other than to load some games and programs and surf the internet.

                      Thanks again to everyone.

Just in case someone else has the same problem. I tried going from a temporary 8 character passcode back to my original 60 character passcode for WiFi connection. This did not work. It started constantly connecting and disconnecting as originally. I then tried a new 12 character passcode. Seemed to work for a short time, but started connecting and disconnecting again. I cut back again to 8 characters. This time it seemed to hold. Apparent lesson learned: Either Connman or antiX will not work with a WiFi passcode more than 8 characters long. This may have been the problem I was having from the beginning. Many thanks to everyone who helped me overcome this and other problems during the past week or so. I think I have things running smoothly now.

I cannot explain it and I do not pretend to understand it, but:

After successfully installing Linux Mint 10 (which indicated no internet connection even though I had the WiFi USB plugged in), I did the reboot called for at the end of the install it would not load to the login screen. So, leaving the WiFi USB plugged in, I reinstalled anitX.

While in antiX Live in went into Connman to connect to the router, which appeared to be successful, so I proceeded with the install. I had to re-do it because I had forgotten to select the hard drive ans the boot drive (so the GRUB install failed). I told it to save the Live settings for the install.

I rebooted after completing the install, went into Connman again to connect to the router, and again it appeared to be successful.

I ran the update antiX in Control Centere and that was successful. For some reason I apparently had to use Connman again to connect to the router, but again it appeared to be successful. I then proceeded to install some applications (including Package Installer) and that was successful as well.

I have now shut down the computer and will see if things are working properly in the morning.

The only thing I can think of is possibly the past times I tried to install antiX from the CD, I may not have had the WiFi USB plugged in at the time i rebooted to start the installation from the CD. Why this would have made a difference, I have no idea.

I will let you know tomorrow if everything is still working properly. Oh, I installed Firefox, but it does not seem to load. I have not tried one of the other browsers.

Xecure, it’s too hard to keep up with distros specifics to know where the ideal place to post is, takes too much time, I have to be practical. pinxi is always next inxi, if you want to do yourselves a favor, just install pinxi in /usr/local/bin, then use pinxi -U to update it whenever you feel like, and you’ll always have the most current cutting edge inxi. The only time pinxi and inxi are roughly the same is right after a new inxi release, but then fixes, issues, new features/ideas, etc, start to happen, and once enough of those collect, I do a next/new inxi, and it all starts over again.

Inxi of course also has the -U self-updater, if it’s blocked, you just change /etc/inxi.conf value: ALLOW_UPDATE=false to true, and then you can use -U.

I don’t use inxi myself, except to run it once or twice when doing a new inxi release to make sure there are no bugs that make it crash, those tend to make packagers aggravated, rightfully so. When I install any distro, first thing I do is install pinxi, then when I want to update it, I just use pinxi -U.

For distros, I really recommend just scripting a packaging tool for inxi, which will always support all systems by definition, and keeping inxi current in all your branches/pools. The ideal is to fully automate that, just check the github inxi tags list, and if it changes, update to next inxi automatically, package it, etc. That’s how I’d do it. Usually you can use the deb from unit193’s ppa, but I think he’s behind at the moment due to the Debian next stable freeze of sid/testing. In other words, bypass the frozen pool inxi completely, which is always totally out of date, and use the current one from git master branch. Don’t use pinxi for packaging because it can and often does contain active debuggers, sometimes bugs, etc, it’s only the development branch, that is. inxi is never architecture or specific software version dependent, that’s a core feature of inxi/pinxi, to run on anything from any time, back to about 2005 or so.

For example, debian sid/testing freeze happened at inxi 3.3.01, sadly right before a bunch of significant fixes for various features that were only exposed after the freeze, but that’s why I’m not a huge fan of frozen pool inxi’s, by definition, hardware, operating systems, etc, change, morph, new issues and old issues are found and fixed, it’s pretty constant, so no benefit really ever comes to anyone from using a frozen inxi. A few distros have realized this, and, for instance Manjaro, finally update inxi in their 3 branches roughly at the same time now for new inxi releases. I think they may be the first to do this across all branches, I’ve advocated doing that for years now since it offers users the best support possible, and helps support people because new things are always added or fixed or tweaked or enhanced.

marcelocripe, I have nothing to do with inxi gui project, I don’t know how good or bad of a job they do with keeping up with inxi features, inxi evolves a lot in terms of output formatting and syntax, though I try to make changes mostly be for improved clarity or better syntax or formatting. It obviously came long, long, long, after inxi itself, I remember seeing it years ago but I don’t really follow it, I faintly remember that it was an antix project originally? though that could be wrong, I really don’t know, never seen or used it.

I can say that over the years, a few key distros have really helped in inxi development, antix is one of them. Currently I’m not having a lot of luck for new feature testing or debugging with distros anymore via posting on their forums, so I am not posting as actively as I used to, it’s a function of time used vs benefit gained, but that’s how it goes, things change, people’s energy, interests, change. Nowadays, if I post to a forum a few times for feedback/dev help, and no meaningful responses come, I tend to move on, since I don’t have infinite time to check back for responses.

It works now! Apparently the DVD was incorrectly burned. My laptop only has a CD-RW burner and DVD reader built into it. Today a friend burned the antiX-19-full-.iso image again for me. This time with a slow burning speed and burned on a DVD+RW blank. Before that it was only a DVD-R.
In any case, the live distri could start without any problems 🙂
The computer itself is otherwise fine. I’ve changed the fan, screen and hard drive in the last few years.

                                  Hello,
I have another question for antiX 19 -base- with a Thinkpad T41:
how do i get Chromium installed? The installation apparently works with ‘sudo apt-get install’ or via Synaptic. There is also an entry in the start menu. Unfortunately nothing happens.
The Seamonkey runs well, but is not up-to-date, as the display looks a bit old, especially on Google searches.
                                  Have a nice evening..
