Okay, I’ve compressed and attached the auth, kern and Xorg logs to this reply — file size was much smaller than I anticipated so I was able to upload it here instead of on an external site.
Thanks Robin for the heads-up; tried unloading that ipw2200 driver like you said, yet my laptop still did not wake from sleep afterwards. Once I get more time I will try going through each driver manually like you said, thanks.
I have a few more details about my laptop that could help narrow things down:
– I am not using the internal Intel WiFi card to connect to the internet, instead I am using an external PCMCIA card with the BCM4321 chipset (it’s a Netgear WN511B).
– Even though I am fairly certain that this specific T43 came with Bluetooth support (there is a Bluetooth light on the indicator LED panel), no Bluetooth adapter is detected under Linux or Windows. Apparently this could be a southbridge issue judging by what pops up on Google, but I’m not sure.Attachments:

in forum SoftwareMember

While in another distro forum recently, I learned from someone that when I want to edit a file (within the file system), I should be using pkexec instead of sudo. When I asked “why”, the nebulous answer I got was that, if I continue using sudo, it will mess up permissions, but when pressed they seemed unable to explain why. Is this merely scaremongering? I’m sure I’m not the only linux-user stuck in this pkexec vs. sudo dilemma.
I’d appreciate any feedback on the following two points:
(1) Editing the File System:
E.g. for editing the grub file, I have always used the following, without any apparent problems:
sudo gedit /etc/default/grubBut now, I’ve been advised to use:
pkexec leafpad /etc/default/grub(2) Opening Graphical Applications
I also learned (from the same person) that I shouldn’t use sudo in the terminal for opening many graphical applications. That I can appreciate, as the point of the gui is to provide an easy-point-and-click alternative to the terminal, and a password isn’t required for many of them, e.g. libreoffice, chromium, etc. However, opening some apps does require a password, e.g. gparted and synaptic, but when you mouse-click on these in the menu, isn’t this the same as evoking sudo? Many thanks in advance for any clarification on the above.

@calciumsodium – Yes, I do understand what you are saying- when developing a script (that’s now part of antiX) both me personally and my efforts were directly insulted by a user. Stuff like that happens very now and then, even here in this forum.
I would suggest also other alternative browsers to dillo- but if I undestand correctly dillo is included in antiX because it works in very old CPU’s that don’t any other GUI browser that allows to view the HTLM help files included in antiX (And there’s no way to read pdf files with pictures, in the terminal)
Don’t get discouraged- I sometimes stayed away from the forum just because it can be too distracty from my “real” life…
Also- we have to take a step back and try to not take stuff personally: “freaking stupid” applied to someone is offensive, but, on the other hand, saying something is “garbage” can be just a valid ( but rude) point of view@Moddit- hum- I don’t disagree with anti’s political point of view- I tend to me apolitical (but generally identify more with positions to the left), I disagree with how democracies tend to work in the world. The very term “Party” (in the sense of “Political party”) is something that does not make much sense to me. That becomes even more apparent in the portuguese word for it “Partido” means “broken”
I disagree with, for example, the fact that anti includes political links in the default browser – mainly because it may tend to scare some kinds of users (An American youtuber did a very good review on antiX then did an addendum, because someone told him about those links, and almost burned antiX at the stake. A commenter on that YouTube’s post even said that our currently default wallpaper was probably an inverted cross- that made me laugh, until I realized the guy was serious…)
Other than that I would change some of antiX’s defaults and one or other app- just because it would make antiX generally more usable and would help it gain mommentum and more users- I don’t want to see antiX became a light Ubuntu, but I do understand that folks are left scratching their heads when, for example, they don’t find an obvious way to add desktop icons- damn- there’s a way to add icons to icewm’s toolbar right there in the menu and many people (even youtube “reviewers” don’t know about it). I would put TIM on icewm’s by default, just because the average users expects options to configure a bar to be available on that bar… Tiny things like that.
Fortunatly, we can configure antiX do look and act anyway that we want. Do I think that the way I use my antiX should be standard? Hum… not really- it would be nice to have a version that was friendlier to Windows users, without any extra use of resources, like my antiX- but I only cared enough to make a transformation pack, not a full blown ISO that anyone could install…P.

Hi,
I am kinda new to this forum. I contribute sometimes because I use antiX a lot and thought I give back in some manners. I have also noticed that some members are a little bit tough on other members. One time, I saw that a member use the term “freaking stupid” and I thought maybe I don’t want to be a part of this show. Then I backed off some looking at the forum for a while but I came back just observing. One time, I wanted to suggest looking at an alternative for Dillo because it has not been updated for a while. There was also a problem with the expiring certificate. I suggested maybe looking at Netsurf. I seem to use it a lot. It certainly has problems on its own. It was just a suggestion. Somebody replied, “garbage.” I told my wife, I think I am going to stop watching this forum. I thougth I was trying to be helpful by creating a discussion. But apparently it was not received as helpful by that response. What I am saying is that some people may feel intimidated from contributing.
Thanks.May 27, 2021 at 12:50 am #60220In reply to: Getting the zram script to work (Solved)

Another one who has no respect 🙂
And by the way, I made this post before the other one, it just didn’t work. Apparently there was a temporary problem with the forum software.
And if you are frustrated as a “pseudo-moderator” or “pseudo-administrator”, because you are just a normal member, then just leave it and do something you like 🙂

Off topic:
@skidoo (My previous post was corrected, and I inserted the part of the sentence that was missing. My idea of “fun” is not altering user’s .desktop files)
I was not aware that ceni add such problems… I haven’t used it since antiX began using connmann as connection manager…
I don’t understand C, but is the (apparently) commented line
define DEFAULT_TERMROX "roxterm --disable-sm -e %s"
meant to make Ceni always launch roxterm, (probably) if it’s the default terminal?I searched “Possum Hollow” on-line found what seems to be a very nice restaurant!

Hi! I would advise this procedure, when trying to install any application in antix:
1- Search for it in Package Installer an install it from there, if it’s available
2- Try to install it using Synaptic or “sudo apt install” from the terminal
3- Try to use the application in a “universal” format (.appimage or .flatpak -please note that .snaps are not compatible with antiX) or Install from a binary compressed format (a .tar file, etc)
4- Risk installing it from a .deb file (please avoid using .deb’s from a Ubuntu PPA, they may not be compatible and may break your system)In your case, try Package Installer (it should be available from the icewm toolbar, or search for it in the menu, or using app-select) and install “iDevice Mounter”– you can search for “IOS”. It should take care of every dependency needed. If you still have problems with dependencies, then you probably broken your antiX install- report here with the error that pops up, se folks can try to help you fix it…
EDIT: just to check if “idevice mounter” had any problem, I tried installing it from Package installer- it installed fine, and installed this packages:
“idevice-mounter ideviceinstaller ifuse iphone-antix libimobiledevice-utils python-imobiledevice python-plist”

@skidoo – thanks for the pointers… it’s still a complete mistery- nothing there points me to why CC was removed- in the last 2 weeks I installed and reinstalled mutt’s deb file (to test my debinstaller script), used antix-updater several times, installed cron-apt, keppassx, reinstalled zzzfm and badwolf, installed icewmcc-antix… that’s all…

(Update to initial reply: After installing resolvconf, no cure. Comparing what I have in my two other laptops, the “afflicted” one doesn’t have a /run subdirectory in /etc. I have to scrutinize the differences to try to see what might fix it.)
Hi Xecure,
Thanks for reply. Neither resolvconf nor ceni were installed so I am pretty sure it was indeed a net install.
I saw that I was missing resolvconf and was going to install it when aptitude showed me openresolv. I checked and that program has been around since at least 2010.
Since both are offered in the repositories, I wondered whether there was an advantage of one over the other.
Lacking any responses I will go with the resolvconf package.
From what you (didn’t) say, I assume that I don’t have to configure the resolv.conf file manually; just install and reboot and start the service and it will generate a basic resolv.conf file?
I WILL have to set up a symbolic link from the newly generated /etc/resolvconf/run/resolv.conf file to /etc/resolv.conf (as mentioned in a number of threads about ceni or connman), yes?
My second question about whether there may be other packages I need, I will defer until I complete the steps you mentioned.
Thanks.

Hi, last year I did a minimal install of Sid. Originally, I used it as a CLI only install, connecting to the internet by ethernet. A few months ago, I added a “minimal” GUI based on Openbox.
Worked fine.Last week, I decided to add wifi.
I haven’t yet been able to get it connecting. I think I am missing a package (or several…) that are required. My basic install does not include the antix control centre.
I installed ceni and today was able to get to a point where I think my network wifi password was accepted by wpa_supplicant. However, I haven’t been able to ping other computers on the network or to connect to internet sites.
Reviewing some of the threads here, I noticed mention of resolvconf and resolv.conf. Apparently, if ceni is installed and working, it uses a resolv.conf file located in the /etc/resolvconf/run/ directory (and works thru the addition of a symbolic link from that file to /etc/resolv.conf).
I suspect that at least I need to install a resolvconf package.
I have two questions:
(1) There are two resolvconf packages in the repository (resolvconf and openresolv). Is one recommended over the other for users of Antix?
(2) Is there a reference that describes all the essential packages required by wifi networking, that I look at?
Thanks.

Cordialement,

spacefm does not perform mount operations directly; it calls a mount handler.
udevil (an automounting utility) is the first-tried spacefm handler.
A rule specifying how to handle ntfs is apparently absent from the udevil configuration on your system (ref: man udevil)Instead of wrestling with crafting a suitable udevil config, you could “sudo apt remove udevil”, then, in the absence of udevil, spacefm would fallback to using another handler (e.g. ‘pmount’, the handler probably being used by ROX). However, udevil removal would cause the dependent “automount-antix” package to also be removed…
If package “ntfs-3g” is installed, the following might successfully perform the mount task
sudo mkdir /mnt/doente && ntfs-3g -o ro /dev/sdaNNN /mnt/doente
The read-only operation would, hopefully, not be stymied (possible, as Wallon mentioned) by hibernation state. If it is, “man ntfs-3g” and search within the manpage for “remove_hiberfile”May 15, 2021 at 8:20 am #59458Topic: Mx-Linux et carte Sata en PCIe

Merci.

no way to get libpolkit-backend-elogind-1-0, because it needed a libpolkit-gobject-elogind-1-0 with the same number version as his, and that would not happen.
here, I am just restating the issue
currently available from antiX19 stable repository:
libpolkit-backend-elogind-1-0 v1.05-25.0nosystemd3
libpolkit-gobject-elogind-1-0 v1.05-29+antix1The latter is uninstallable due to absence of a same-versioned “backend” package.
shouldn’t them packages in the antiX distribution sources be the same version so that installing one will not create a conflict preventing the other to be installed?
Yes, they should. You have correctly identified a problem regarding the antiX19 stable repository status quo. Apparently libpolkit-gobject-elogind-1-0 is an “extra” that nothing preinstalled in antiX 19 needs, and no one (prior to your attempt) has previously attempted to install.
Best course of action would be to send a PM to anticapitalista, requesting a matching 1.05-29+antix1 libpolkit-backend-elogind-1-0 ~~ we should not trust that the pinned//stapled “0nosystemd3” analogue will be fully compatible.

@JSM: sorry to hijack your post a bit- but you mentioned you’ll test alternative browsers…
I tried out Otter browser – you have to install it’s dependencies (libqt5multimedia5 libqt5xmlpatterns5) and then you can test, if you are running a 64 bits pc, Otter’s appimage, available over at https://sourceforge.net/projects/otter-browser/files/otter-browser-weekly380/
If you running a 32 bits machine, you can try your luck compiling from source or installing .deb files already packaged for other systems (like, just for example https://launchpad.net/~otter-browser/+archive/ubuntu/release/+files/otter-browser_1.0.01-1~disco~ppa1_i386.deb – PLEASE BE CAREFUL– this .deb file is packaged for Ubuntu, not antiX so, if you break your computer, you get to keep the pieces)On my single core desktop, installed from a dubious .deb file Otter runs quite fast. the .appimage version does not open any webpage, complains about SSL support…
By usual test is trying to open the same youtube video with a browser and see how it performs one my single core desktop and netbook. Otter’s first few seconds of video streaming are a bit slow, then it evens out, playing at 360p. Badwolf, with JavaScript enabled, plays the same video, out of the box, at 480p, and much smoothly… On the negative side, since Badwolf only runs in “private mode”, I always have to click the youtube’s pop window to stream video there… On both browsers the CPU runs at 100%, while streaming a YT video.
