If the system does a persist save repos get reset.

So to me the system is also not behaving as I might reasonably expect. By design or not I do not know.

Why I did not see that before, I guess because after a remaster I do not continue to do any work or play, just shutdown,

I don’t use static persistence but have learned (probably the hard way) that
yes, if performing a live-remaster operation during a dynamic persistence session,
you should shutdown the machine immediately after performing a remaster operation.
      -=-
      said differently:
Subsequent to the remaster operation, further same-session changes to the system will not be saved.

This detail, coaching the user to shutdown now and restart, probably should be added into the “success” messagebox (or commandline output) displayed at the end of a live-remaster operation. Additionally, this detail could be mentioned in the docs. Wait, does a standalone docs page (beyond the –help output) exist for live-remaster? Yeah, but it doesn’t exactly “get into detail”, eh /FAQ/remaster.html

In the interim In the absence of such a notice of a the end of the live-remaster operation, or perhaps as an additional “heads up”… the l-r operation should place a /tmp/flagfile which the persist-save script (applicable to dynamic perisstence only, eh) would test for on each run, and if the flagfile is present would advise “subsequent to live-remaster, cannot save further changes until the system is restarted”.

^— hmm, the additional “persist-save would check and…” is too late ~~ amounts to “salt in the wound” of any caught-by-surprise user.

Ah, the biting edge(s) of “confusingly flexible functionality”.

Confusingly (to me, at the time), back around 2016 or 2017… live-remaster was “expanded, improved”, it grew a third-leg feature offering to optionally — in advance — create the fresh persistence container(s) which will be used (immediately//automatically) upon next reboot. Typically, at the start of each liveboot session, we have the opportunity (via bootmenu or or bootline) to choose/change the type of persistence to be used during the current session -OR- we may choose to altogether forego use of persistence for the current session.

I understand (and agree) that some aspects of the status quo behavior are “surprising”, are “unexpected”. I’m not trying to defend the status quo, am merely attempting to explain the status quo behavior.

Somehow, attention to “it might be inconvenient if live-remaster _forced_ the user to immediately shutdown following its completion” apparently outweighed attention to the prospect of cofusion induced by having too many options and choices available.

if performing a live-remaster operation during a dynamic persistence session

In that (dynamic) scenario, one of the steps during the live-remaster operation is to rename ‘rootfs’ to ‘rootfs.bak’. If the user optionally elects to “create, in advance” a new persistence container, a file named ‘rootfs.new’ is created. If/when persist-save is called subsequently later in the same session, it will be unable to find a ‘rootfs’ file to, so is unable to save any changes.

In the ‘static’ scenario, I do not know whether a similar “technical limitation” exists.

I post this problem in Hardware despite feeling the solution may lie with a software change. I have had these strange effects with other similar but not identical PCs and with 3 or 4 display units including old 15″ and 14″ glass monitors, a portable flat screen tv with elongated format, and a more regular shaped flat screen commercial monitor. All manual adjustments possible on the displays have been tried without success. The PCs that have offended are both MSI 64bit, but have performed quite normally under release 13 and 16, but have shown this problem under release 17 and 19. I have 2 other PCs that work normally with these same monitors leading me to think that the particular graphics chipset on these MSI mainboards is to blame.

The install of 19.3 is completely up to date. The background and windows never correspond to the physical monitor boundaries, so parts are missing usually at the top of the display. When a window is located up there I cannot see the 3 minimise maximise and close buttons. Other parts of the display are splashed around the screen apparently randomly, and I can wipe them away using the mouse cursor arrow, but any mouse or application activity soon brings them back again. It´s no use my attempting to show you a screenshot because the screen buffer looks quite correct, although I attach such a shot to emphasise the point.

AR&R does not offer the screen layouts that are possible with the current monitor, only 800×600 and 640×480, all monitors I have tried will work with much more. I searched the forum for clues and located Anticapitalista´s post about changing screen resolution but when I looked in /usr/local/bin I found no file called screen_resolution.sh so was unable to proceed with this suggestion.

I can manage to work with it by wiping away the trash using the mouse arrow so I can see the workspaces and other items, but it is getting on my nerves.

@Robin, what set in-app “features” are you interested in?

Personally, I’m unconvinced that I would find favor with any “serverless” framework.

In the interim, pending reply from the topic originator on requirements I would like to agree with skidoo that complete anonymity exposes such service to a potential of unethical abuse by some rogue users. However IMHO I do not see where the notion ‘decentralized’ and ‘distributed’ technology entail the requirement of being ‘anonymous’, although specific designs may often go in tandem. I think the right solution is not necessarily to be anonymous, but rather to be independent from oppressive powers and that most likely means serverless.
            Just to clarify these points:
            – Recent history shows that legitimate freedom of speech is being suppressed by those companies which are in control of such speech communication, if they are siding with opposite political factions. Even the entire services are being shut down if represent political views not to their liking, such as the case of Parler.
            – Centralized, server based communication services are easy to shut down or content can be controlled and selectively manipulated by companies in control of such services.
            – Decentralized, distributed service would apparently resolve the above issues of suppression of freedom of political speech.
            – Anonymity is not the point here and not the requirement. On the contrary, the politically oppressed views should not be anonymous in the first place. Freedom of speech does not mean anonymous and on the contrary everyone expressing political views should have the courage to identify himself and stand for his cause. It is not anonymity that is a requirement, on the contrary. It is the requirement of being able to express and communicate political views, not being suppressed by oppressive powers being in control of communication. I think this is an important distinction to counter the current situation that starts to resemble some past regimes where all media were in control of the ruling party. Just as a great statesman said ‘There is no such thing as public opinion. There is only published opinion.’…
            Just my two cents…
            Thanks for such interesting topic.

              instead, I would suggest
              https://f-droid.org/

Hi Skidoo! I missed your sense of humor…

I do, in fact, suggest using f-droid for installing opensource apps, and also adding to it repos for Firefox/Bromite/Newpipe to keep the browsers (and streaming app) up to date without relying on manual updates or the Play Store…

I suggested only activating the Play store when there’s need to update software that’s not available via f-droid. There are many thousands of applications for android on the Play store (maybe millions?), and only hundreds off apps on f-droid- if the user wants to use the android device for any other use than as a phone/calendar/camera/calculator/document viewer/ media player/ opensource software/ internet related stuff, and wants/requires certain apps, I consider (maybe wrongly) that it’s safer to activate the Play store temporarily, and install/update those applications than risk installing apk’s found on-line.
There’s also Aurora store, that supplies the free apps available on the Play store, but, as far as I know, it violates Google’s license, allowing the use of the Store without a google account… Google can deactivate your account if it finds out you’ve been using it…

If a user does not require any particular app/game other than what comes pre installed with the OS (Facebook/messenger/and all such crap) and gets by with the apps I suggested above (you can even use open source only chess and checkers games, available on f-droid, I suggested only those I liked best)
since stuff like webmail/ 9gag /youtube /social networks/ cloud drives/ etc, can be used via web browser, and you can create icons for those “web apps” on your device, there’s really no need to install and use android apps for that… You don’t clutter your device, you don’t have to keep updating the apps, and you close your browser, and clean the cookies/cache and there’s no great loss of privacy.

I admit that I have many non opensource apps on my device, even some games (for me and my kid) that were installed using the Play store. There are even some console grade level games I got for free.

As far as I know, the best image to pdf scanner for android [something I used a lot at my work] is not free- I got it for free on a sale ( MS’s app is really free, and comes very close to it in functionality, though- I don’t like MS, but I do have to admit that they do some nice and effective apps- bitch as much as I do about Windows, if it was really that bad to use, Linux would be ruling desktop computers, since Windows 7 was replaced by that appalling Windows 8)

If people like android games- it can be used as a pretty decent portable gaming console, for some kinds of games- much cheaper than a real portable console – but some (many) apps almost ask you to promise the developer your first born son in order to use the app (many games that are “free” during a sale, for example, ask to access your contact list, and control calls, etc- Why the **** does a game not work without all that? Simple- it’s a scam- you play a “free” or cheap game, but give the Dev’s all your data…

In an ideal world, we should all be using a really opensource phone (does not matter to me if it runs Linux, opensource only android, or as last option -a non privacy invading closed source OS, whatever… I had a old touchscreen symbian phone, some 10-12 years ago, that did some 90% of the stuff I use my android device for- I listened to stuff, read e-books, took photos, read documents, played some nice games… I only got my first android after my last “non smartphone” device died on me… and I seriously considered getting, a couple of years ago, a non android nokia phone with a nice camera to replace my then failing android device…

              Side note:
My only tablet device is and android 4.4.1.- probably some 5-6 years old- and still works and looks brand new (except for the occasional freeze, that a reset solves- that has been happening for some months now- nothing last for ever and the hardware is probably failing…)

              P.

So, I just installed AntiX yesterday, boy was wifi a pain in the backside to get going compared to MX, but I got it going. Also a side note, the Control Centre GUI ceni and connman buttons do absolutely nothing when clicked for some reason. It is also a real pita to install newer kernels without internet so your wifi dongles will work lol.

The issue now is when I go to logout > suspend, it doesn’t suspend but instead shuts the computer down apparently. When I come back later, it’s totally off. I don’t really know much about suspend on Linux since it has pretty much always just worked.

                  select menu >Desktop >Other Desktops >space-icewm

                  It’s working! Thank you.
                  I add:
                  spacefm --desktop
in control center -> session -> desktop session config, and now on boot it’s also working.

Ubuntu applications or other PPA based software are not recommended.

Yes, but the icons disappeared before I install this software. It’s only xiphos (a new version) and the ufr2 driver for canon printer. I installed the software and remove the ppa from the source.list.

                    I saw your other post.

antiX is based on Debian, and Ubuntu applications or other PPA based software are not recommended.

I suggest you reinstall from scratch and add any needed applications from the Package installer. If the Package installer doesn’t have the application you need, use Synaptic to find and install the application you are looking for. Firefox, Libreoffice, and Synaptic are all available from the package installer. No PPAs are needed.

Personally, on older computers, I run the IceWM desktop and add icons for the programs I use all the time to my toolbar so my system saves the memory for the applications themselves.

On boot when I type e, nothing happens, boot continues. I use my ppa, the boot is ok. That means probably the update of the system cause the crash.

Hello Skidoo, Seaken64, Oops and BobC.

I thank you for your considerations.

Is that why there is the “X” of the antiX?

So we have characteristics of each element: “Desktop Environments”, “Window Manager”, “File Manager”, “Desktops” and “desktop (icon) manager” combined and available in antiX.

However, we only have a space to identify a list of options, apparently “Desktops” or “Other Desktops” causes confusion, as there are two “Desktops” listed, 1 and 2. In addition, this term “Other Desktops” does not transmit the meaning of what are the other options available. Apparently, the most coherent would be “Other Desktop Environments” in place of “Other Desktops” and it would be necessary to change “Desktops” to “Desktop Environments”.

As was very well accounted for by Skidoo at topic, antiX has several possibilities for combinations of features, making it mutable and extremely flexible.

As I typed, BobC sent fantastic definitions on the subject that will help me make the best possible translation adaptation for Brazilian Portuguese. But, I can’t think exclusively about my language or how users who speak the same language as me will be able to understand antiX and its many features. We have to think about all users on the planet and the different languages available on antiX.

However, I think that, it would be interesting that the administrators could express their considerations and point of view on this matter. And who knows, consider implementing the necessary changes in antiX 21, not because I am proposing or asking, but because it is necessary to make the information available in its proper places and with appropriate terms.

Perhaps users coming from other GNU/Linux distributions can more easily understand what “Other Desktop Environments” are than “Other Desktops”.

I am grateful to the Portuguese translators of antiX / MX Linux and their enormous capacity to interpret / adapt the translation into the European Portuguese language in both operating systems.

                        Grateful.

                        ———-

                        Grato.

Ok I’ll try without the ppa. But I’m only installing two software. How to activate the recovery mode in grub?

antiX doesn’t install any kernel automatically.
Maybe the ppa you added is causing the issue.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

I use antix 19.03, in the source list I add my ubuntu ppa and a ppa for my canon printer. But if I understand well, antix doesn’t install new kernel automatically?

modular Clear Linux package on antiX

Does it mean that you are interested in a single package only?
In the past, I have had some success with the aforementioned tool/program ‘alien’.
It can convert RPM to DEB.
If it does not go wrong and you manage to sort out dependencies, then you *might* get a package working in antiX.
                                You may indeed try
alien --to-deb <package>.rpm which should create ‘<package>.deb’ and then you may run
                                sudo dpkg -i <package>.deb
                                followed by
                                sudo apt install --fix-broken
                                that may resolve the dependencies.

Of course, use at your own risk.

                                Thanks.

I’m still researching. Apparently, part of the reason Clear Linux is fast is because of the installer/compiler that uses bundles to keep the optimizations relevant and patched among a variety of programs. I think this could still be modular, but the question is what it would do.

Also on the Clear Linux forum I found people who are installing the Clear Linux RPM tool swupd on Debian and other people installing Debian packages on Clear Linux — so this should all work. The question is how to automate it and what drawbacks may exist for the variety of approaches.

haha, apparently you meant “feasible” not “feasible

                                  Sure, go for it!
