      Thanks, but …
Using Ubuntu PPAs is not recommended on antiX.
Having said that, it is your box and if anything goes wrong with using Ubuntu PPAs you get to pick up the pieces.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

I’m new in this forum and don t have much experience with antix. But to add some contend i’ll explain how to install Java 14 jdk.
This was the biggest issue i had in 4 days using Antix.
My atempts via gdebi or dbkg -i all failed.
It was a mess until i found this webseite which explains how to install it by adding their repository:

        https://www.linuxuprising.com/2020/03/how-to-install-oracle-java-14-jdk14-on.html

        su -

echo "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/linuxuprising/java/ubuntu focal main" | tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/linuxuprising-java.list

        apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys 73C3DB2A

        apt-get update

        apt-get install oracle-java14-installer

        exit

          Thank you… here’s what happened…

          $ apt-get update && apt-get -f install
          Reading package lists... Done
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/
W: Problem unlinking the file /var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin - RemoveCaches (13: Permission denied)
W: Problem unlinking the file /var/cache/apt/srcpkgcache.bin - RemoveCaches (13: Permission denied)

Tried the same, but: sudo apt-get update && apt-get -f install

The dialogue shows that it attempted to connect with several repositories, but in all cases, the repos “Could not be resolved” (apparently, internet connection is broken, but external router shows the computer connected),

          Also the following messages:

W: Some index files failed to download. They have been ingnored, or old ones used insteand
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to acquire the dpkg frontend lock (/var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend), are you root?

For what it’s worth, I am able to change directories and open Midnight Commander.

I was not knowingly using nvidea drivers. However, I think they were mentioned during the original dist-upgrade.

I made a previous post on this subject. But it disappeared after an edit.

After trying a liveUSB of bare Antix19, I decided to upgrade my existing 32 bit Antix 17.4.1 system, by following the steps shown in the post “Upgrading antiX-17 to antiX-19”.

Step 5 is apparently no longer valid with the isos available now (since March 27) according to other posts. This step should be edited, to show that it is only needed with older isos. (This caused confusion, because apt-get complained that libpam-elogind-compat could not be installed, due to a held program, As far as I can see, there is no held program. But until discovering that elogind was no longer an issue, I was stuck.)

Unfortunately, my initial attempt was interrupted, and failed because I accidentally skipped the final step
            “apt-get install –reinstall desktop-session-antix”
The system appeared to boot, but the desktop never came to life.

My question, in the post that disappeared, was whether there was a way to recover from my mistake.
When the post disappeared, I decided the quickest cure was to re-install Antix 17 from backup (did so successfully), and to try the upgrade steps again, more carefully.

I did so. Things appeared to progress well. The process completed successfully. But upon reboot, the system behaves just the same… it appears to be booting up, but the desktop never opens.

I was hoping to avoid starting from scratch with a bare system. But maybe that’s all that remains.

            Your suggestions will be appreciated.

              To fungalnet and fatmac,

Yes, that was the first thing I tried.

Using commands that bash no longer recognized (-bash: mv no such file or directory…).

That is my question – how to I get bash to recognize the commands to move the file back where it belongs!

I think bash requires that C library to be able to find/use the commands.

bash apparently doesn’t know where to look for the C library, except in the expected directory.

That is why I asked about using the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to tell it where to look.

BUT, I am ignorant about the need for other C library files still in the original directory if I do that.
I once used the PRELOAD version of this command to enable a particular application to work but it was a long, long, long time ago and I am scared when it comes to messing with the C library files (not really scared – I would like to learn how to do this properly).

I know, from looking online last night, that others have used the LD_LIBRARY_PATH command to tell a script where to find the necessary library file, but I haven’t found a site to explain it to noobies, yet.)

OH, finally the other reason for posting was to see if anyone else had a similar problem arise with updating that C library file.

Thanks for responses, d I will repost if I get it figured out.

I tried it and test apparently has too many arguments using this specific syntax:

                test [ $(crontab -l | grep “aptitude-updatescheck.sh” | wc -l) -eq 0 ] \
                > && (echo “*/10 * * * * env DISPLAY=:0.0 aptitude-updatescheck.sh” | crontab – )&
                [1] 8092
                masinick@mx:~/bin
                $ no crontab for masinick
bash: line 4: test: too many arguments

                [1]+ Exit 2 test [ $(crontab -l | grep “aptitude-updatescheck.sh” | wc -l) -eq 0 ] && ( echo “*/10 * * * * env DISPLAY=:0.0 aptitude-updatescheck.sh” | crontab – )

all my configuration changes were lost. My programs installed did remain, the setups were lost.

Pardon my Linux ignorance or lack of understanding of issue… I thought it is the responsibility of ISO Snapshot utility to faithfully ‘snap’ a fully configured system, for the purpose of restoring it on new hardware. Therefore I would appreciate if someone enlightens me why we need to resort to manual porting /etc/skel if such ‘simple’ task is expected to be fulfilled through ISO Snapshot…
In all my apparent misunderstanding of the goal to be accomplished here I brought up: ISO Snapshot in my testing faithfully restored to new environment both all customized software and custom settings if no home persistence was not requested in the new environment. Preserving custom settings only failed when the new environment was booted with creating new homefs with error on copy step. Custom installed programs were carried over to new environment in either case.
So I would appreciate someone explains why need to resort to customizing /etc/skel if carrying over custom settings is already done in ISO Snapshot…

GitHub Desktop is an open source Electron-based GitHub app. It is written in TypeScript and uses React.

                      What is this repository for?
This repository contains specific patches on top of the upstream desktop/desktop repository to support Linux usage.
It also hosts preview packages for various Linux distributions:

                      AppImage (.AppImage)
                      Debian (.deb)
                      RPM (.rpm)

You are probably more likely to succeed by using the AppImage instead of the .deb
Said differently, I expect installing the from-PPA .deb will provide an imperfect result.
(Browse the other tickets and note that even users of stock Debian10 have reported problems.)

As noted previously, I’m having trouble connecting to commercial VPN servers.

Experiments with VPNs… (my system: Antix 17, 32 bit, with firejail and apparmor, Firefox-esr, Thunderbird)

AirVPN works with Eddie-ui (a gui openvpn client) v.2.16.3 and v.2.18.7 (the latter is also supposed to work with other vpn providers).
These apps were installed via Synaptic from… eddie.website/repository/apt/
for v.2.16.3 — is in stable main
for v.2.18.7 (considered experimental) — is in testing main

Using the Eddie client, AirVPN connects rapidly to any of its servers. A browser (opened outside of firejail) shows a new IP address. However, a browser opened inside of firejail has no internet connection. Why not?

Cyberghost and zoogvpn… Neither will connect via Eddie, although the dialogue looks promising to start with. When connection fails, Eddie moves on to another server in the list. When it gets to an AirVPN server, it connects.

                        Using openvpn directly…
From root terminal, with vpn provider’s credentials and config (or .ovpn) files in /etc/openvpn…

                        cd /etc/openvpn
ls # for list of config files in directory
                        openvpn –config DesiredServerName.ovpn

                        Zoogvpn (free subscription) authorization fails.

If the VPN is actually up, browsers don’t connect to it. Does ceni and/or wicd need to be configured in some way?

                            VPNsecure.me
This company has a proprietary app (32 bit, Linux Debian) which installed on my system (with minor difficulty). Initially, it failed to connect, due to an unrecognized command in a company provided config file. Their rep said problem was due to a buggy openvpn version (2.4.0). After upgrading to v. 2.4.4 (from Synaptic repo: deb http://iso.mxrepo.com/antix/testing/testing nonfree nosystemd main), the same problem continued. (AirVPN worked with either version of openvpn. The newer version did not bring successful connections to cyberghost, zoogvpn, or vpnsecure.me)

I commented out the offending line, in their config file. After restart of app, it declared “Connected.” However, my browsers did not recognize the connection. Their “ip check” button opens another browser, which also could not find the internet connection. I sent a logfile to them, but no answer, yet.

Thinking that the Eddie client could be interfering with openvpn for other providers, I uninstalled it. However, the problems with other providers persist (openvpn direct connection doesn’t happen). So, I’ll probably re-install Eddie, since so far, AirVPN actually works for me.

But even for that, I don’t know how to make a firejailed browser use the vpn connection.

I conclude that the approach I was trying won’t work. 🙁 Someone please correct or confirm.

Grub can decrypt a partition to a virtual device (crypto0) and load vmlinuz and initrd from it, but I think once grub hands control over to linux, (crypto0) is gone and forgotten.

If some initrds are set up to ask for a password when presented with a luks-encrypted drive, it would explain the statement “I’d be prompted twice for the LUKS passphrase (once by GRUB, then again by the initramfs).”

Apparently, Antix’s initrd is not designed this way. With bdev=sdb pdev=sdb (sdb=hd1=crypto-luks flash drive), it does not prompt for a password, it just fails to find linuxfs.

@armando, thanks for your suggestions. I’ll try them.

EDIT: @armando, those commands also fail with “could not find linuxfs” as soon as grub hands over to initrd.
To get past this, I guess it will be necessary to add cryptsetup to the initrd.
Doing a frugal install in its own partition probably sounds strange; I want the option not to save a session.

It looks like my long post resurfaced… but it is now obsolete (my apologies). Since then, I have had partial success…

Experiments with VPNs… (Antix 17, 32 bit, with firejail and apparmor, Firefox-esr, Thunderbird)

AirVPN works with Eddie-ui v. 2.16.3 and v.2.18.7 (the latter is supposed to work with other vpn providers).
These apps were installed via Synaptic from…
                                  for v.2.16.3 — deb http://eddie.website/repository/apt/ stable main
                                  for v.2.18.7 — deb http://eddie.website/repository/apt/ testing main

AirVPN connects rapidly with Eddie-ui, to any of its servers. A browser (opened outside of firejail) shows a new IP address. However, a browser opened inside of firejail has no internet connection.

Cyberghost and zoogvpn… Neither will connect via Eddie, although the dialogue looks promising to start with. When connection fails, Eddie moves on to another server. If it hits an AirVPN server, it connects.

Is there a setting in ceni or wicd which will cause the computer to use the appropriate IP for the vpn?
