Dear, I am happy with Antix and I would be happy to install it on my old Macbook pro
          please find below the inxi:

          madibi@MacBookPro ~ $ inxi
          CPU~Dual core Intel Core2 T7400 (-MCP-) speed/max~997/2167 MHz Kernel~5.0.0-36-generic i686 Up~5 min Mem~273.2/1928.0MB HDD~120.0GB(8.9% used) Procs~175 Client~Shell inxi~2.3.56

I tried both to start with a CD or to boot with an USB key,
I arrive in the 1st screen where to make the choices F1, etc
then I push Enter and after 30-40″ the install stops with no messages and with no apparent reason.

The same happens to me with Debian Q4OS.
At the moment only Ubuntu’s derivates are working properly – I choose Peppermint 10 – but unfortunately the system is a bit too slow.

Can anyone help me to proceed with the installation of Antix?

          Many thx in advance

I did check the md5sum with the download when burning the CD. I have never had quite the same issue before. I have now wiped the drive completely using DFSee version 15 boot cd and started over with a clean drive having marked bad sectors. The installation goes without issues until the final 3% and after I have entered names, passwords and locale etc. I get a message that the grub installation has failed and that I should run Grub Rescue. Running Grub Rescue failed to find any grub boot loaders. There could be a hard drive issue but I would have expected this to become apparent earlier. The machine is an IBM T42. Will check bios details and report later.
            Any suggestions gratefully received.

Well I used demo as password and ran bootrepair (or something like that) but it failed, apparently.

In my understanding if you removed all Linux OSs such as formatted partitions then Bootrepair will fail but going back to the first post was the message that grub could not be installed received during installation of antiX to a hard drive partition?

Well I used demo as password and ran bootrepair (or something like that) but it failed, apparently. When I started over, booting from the CD rom, I had the same problem. I cannot find anything labelled Grub rescue. I am working with Antix 19 32 bit base as the full system will not fit on CD and I cannot get USB to boot, but that is another story. Where can I find Grub Rescue please? Is it on the base system or should I download it?
                All help gratefully received.
                Many thanks,
                Budgie

As per anticapitalista’s suggestion, am posting this as a new thread; looking for some obscure hack for Connman.

The house I am living in has a very good wifi box hooked up to Hughes satellite dish. It is set up with a SSID name, and NO ENCRYPTION, because the house is 15 miles from the nearest town, and therefore is not needed (is the explanation from the owner, from whom I rent a bedroom). AntiX 19’s Connman is absolutely worthless in my situation. MX19’s Network Manager connects immediately. AntiX 18.4.1’s ceni functions without a passphrase as well. But Connman does not.

I tried to get Connman to connect with its graphical user interface. It wants my wifi’s SSID, which is “DarkCloud2”. So I entered it, which brought up a window asking for the passphrase, WHICH IT DOES NOT HAVE, because it is completely open and unencrypted. Connman will not proceed from there. I have tried typing in “<none>”. Didn’t work. Online instructions for Connman are singularly unhelpful at best, and are, apparently, nonexistent in antiX 19. Previous versions of antiX didn’t have any for Ceni either, but I was able to muddle through it, with the help of one of DolphinOracle’s videos. Not so with Connman.

I duckduckgo’d “linux connman network manager”, couldn’t find any relevant links for my problem, other than to type in “connmanctl enable wifi” into the terminal. Which I did. eventually typed in “connmanctl help” or “help connmanctl”, don’t remember which. It LOOKED helpful, but nothing I tried would let me get past SSID without a pesky passphrase. Even tried typing in the wifi’s BSSID “00:80:ae:72:7d:e2”. Posting inxi information would seem to me to be unhelpful, as my netbooks’ internal systems are not the problem.

Anticapitalista’s suggestion to add ceni back in is not useful for the live version, let alone a full install, as wired Ethenet is at present unavailable to me (in order to download ceni–-as I said, it’s not my wifi box, and physical access to it is unavailable). Only–and rather unpalatible–solution I can think of, is attempting to remake a core iso into a base or full iso, something I do not know how to do–DolphinOracle’s videos on the subject, dating back to 2014 and antiX 13, seem a bit outdated as to what packages to add back in, if nothing else!

Is there any possibility of fielding a special base version with ceni instead of connman? Because, at the moment, if I want to use antiX19, given my present skill set, I’m dead in the water.

First off: I happen to be primarily using Fluxbox Radiant not IceWM. However I do need to use IceWM on some laptops due to Fluxbox problem on Chrome/Chromium not reacting to drop down menu items. So in general use I am not affected by what I am describing here as peculiarity, tested on a few Live sticks across a few laptops:
                    – It appears that after installation of Kodi (I am pretty sure I do not need to explain this fantastic multimedia software widely popular for streaming videos and a primary component of all those Android boxes connected to TV sets), Kodi is listed on ‘Other Desktops’ as WM (!), which might be a good idea for laptops dedicated to video streaming, such as TV channels, movies, etc., so antiX boots straight to Kodi for them.
                    – However this idea of treating Kodi as a desktop seems good, the unfortunate side effect in my testing is that IceWM seems to have disappeared from Desktops list, apparently replaced by Kodi. This is for me reminiscent of antiX 19 beta versions, where IceWM was gone under some circumstances…

I do not suppose this behavior is intended…

What is next? I’m running pretty well on 19 (full 64 bit, tweaked). My packagecomp scripts worked real well for the 17 to 19 migration, especially after I got almost all my mods out of the standard libraries. My mods are less of mods and more in the nature of tweaks to suit my preferences, but it’s a pleasure for me to use as a result.

I’ve been working a lot lately, and had to devote my best laptop to Win/10. What a misery of an OS. It spends forever nagging me and updating who knows what for no apparent purpose other than to infuriate me.

So I’ve been pretty much forced to do my antiX playing, tweaking and testing on my #2 laptop or the older ones. I’ve done real well making a snapshot and burning an ISO of it, and then installing it on other machines. Next I would like to figure out a way, maybe with github or the like, to save and distribute my setup changes without needing to reinstall on the other machines. Also need to try the “diversion” trick on the one antiX program I have that is changed.

I wish I had the newest IceWM if its running well, but not sure if the icon issues (or other problems) anti hit have been fixed or not. Thinking about trying to add the disk space monitors myself, but not being a real C programmer it would be an amazing feat and possibly a terrible kludge if I did it by copying the battery monitor code or network monitor code.

How about everyone else? It’s been very quiet around here…

I would like to install get iplayer on my 32bit antix system. I naormally (in other systems that is) add this repo
                        sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jon-hedgerows/get-iplayer
                        and then install it.
However the above command is unknown.
Can anyone help me on installing get iplayer please.
                        Thanks

When you placed copies of “the antiX17 files” onto a FAT32-formatted pendrive for transfer, all their “permissions settings” were lost because FAT32 has no means to store the permission details.

lookit (quick background reading, toward understanding a couple concepts):
                          https://askubuntu.com/questions/555790/where-does-ubuntu-save-user-permission-of-a-file
                          and
                          https://linoxide.com/linux-command/linux-inode/#What_is_an_inode_in_Linux

When the antiX 19 system reads that FAT32 pendrive, regardless which file manager you use, valid permissions aren’t found. For any files you copy onto the antiX19 filesystem from the FAT32-foratted pendrive, the file manager (or the underlying filesystem) falls back to applying a default permissions mask ~~ and you wind up with all the copied files now “owned by root, and marked as accessible to all”.

If you must copy from PC to pendrive to OtherPC (meaning: for some reason you cannot use sftp or samba or whatever to transfer directly PC-to-PC), you can avoid the permissions mangling by using a pendrive which has been formatted as ext4 (not fat32, not exfat, not ntfs). Back in the day, if the file copy was successful… you were apparently using a suitably-formatted pendrive during the transfer.

                            Hello!

I have a frugal-static install of antix 19 with persist root enabled.
My keyboard layout was not saved in between reboots and it always reverted back to “gb”. I used the Control Centre -> System -> Set System Keyboard Layout command and it was only changed for the current session. However, the settings in /etc/default/keyboard where correctly changed but reverted after a reboot.

Then I tried this command: setxkbmap -model pc105 -layout at which changes the keyboard layout in a cli-way, but the settings were still not saved after a reboot.

I added a line in .bash_profile that executes the above command. According to the bash man page, the .bash_profile file is executed every time I log in, so it should work, right? It did not :'(

I tried creating a new cronjob with @reboot setxkbmap -model pc105 -layout at but still no luck.
I looked through the old forum archives and someone created a init-script that apparently fixes this issue. So I tried creating a script in the /etc/init.d/ directory which executes the above command but alas, the settings were still overwritten.

It even says in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log that the keyboard was initialized with the “gb” keyboard layout, but how is that possible?

                            [ 16.679] (**) Option "config_info" "udev:/sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/LNXPWRBN:00/input/input11/event7"
[ 16.679] (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Power Button" (type: KEYBOARD, id 6)
                            [ 16.679] (**) Option "xkb_model" "pc105"
                            [ 16.679] (**) Option "xkb_layout" "gb"
                            [ 16.679] (**) Option "xkb_options" "grp:alt_shift_toggle,terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp,grp_led:scroll"

I finally found a solution on reddit that worked for me (It’s for antix-13 but if it works it works!):
                            Reddit post

I’m sorry if I’m spamming here to much but I thought this could help someone else out.

But I really would like to know why this keeps happening! Did I forget to configure some magic variable?
The bug (if it is a bug) must happen sometime late into the boot process, otherwise the init-script or the cronjob would have worked.
Also, why didn’t the command in the .bash_profile work? Can someone pls tell me what I did wrong?

Note: Strangely, with the reddit solution the settings in the /etc/default/keyboard file are not modified but the keyboard is setup correctly.

ooohhh ooohhh…. there is a problem, it seems there are people (apparently from Brasil, and I dare call them people) who dislike the choice of the name for the edition 🙂

If it’s dormant, who is going to give you support when you need it?

There is a “Yo Momma” joke in here somewhere but I’ll let it slide this time.

It’s two years since it had an update.

Yeah, I know that. I told you I looked at the wikipedia article, distrowatch and github. If I intended to install it, why would I even bother asking about it? To the contrary, I am asking out of curiosity, because I don’t have plans to try it.

You could, of course, take over the project yourself as you think it’s so wonderful. I’m quite happy with antiX.

You could, of course, take your defensive zeal down about 9 or 10 notches, while calmly reminding yourself that this is the OTHER DISTRO forum. Nobody is attacking antiX or your devotion to it, so please cool your jets.

Gobolinux was created to overcome the limitation of trying to run Linux on a university system with only user access. In other words, run everything under your user.
It’s an interesting idea but it is probably only useful if you are in a similar situation.

The first page I ended up on was actually the special download page describing that ‘rootless’ situation– it was linked from a thread on superuser or some other site. I’m only surprised the alternative file hierarchy thing hasn’t been pushed more, because that’s probably the most common complaint I receive from people switching from Windows to Linux; not understanding the directories, where programs reside, etc..

The ‘file system as package manager’ concept sounds kinda neat, but not much testimonial seems to remain outside of the hypothetical marketing fluff talking about how it’s supposed to work. If it was an earth-shattering improvement, one would assume it would’ve caught on elsewhere which I why I was also curious if anyone else had tried. Not one of those features that is easy to search for.

I did not know GoboLinux before.

Neither did I really. I definitely remember the logo and I must’ve looked at some aspect of it before, but clearly I never read much about its features until stumbling thru a side door, back in to their apparently defunct site.

Not sure 100% what I think about it, but I agree it’s an interesting concept.
