I keep getting notices that my brand new Firefox is out of date. I thought that when I did an apt-get update && apt-get upgrade that my Firefox would automagicallly upgrade as well. Apparently not! I downloaded from the Firefox page, I clicked on extract, and nothing has happened. The download (unextracted one) is in the downloads file, if that helps, but I can’t find anything that indicates where the extracted one is. Any help would be appreciated.
      TIA, mizpa

Wow, Sam, Minus the audio part, its exactly what I was wishing for. Thanks for taking the time to post the idea and links…

        Off Topic

Perhaps the reason for this post, made during your exploration of UZBL is now more apparent.

Additionally, avoid thinking of Streamlight as being useful only in partnership with a web browser. It works in partnership with any GUI app in which the URL of the video can be selected by highlighting it with the cursor.

Maybe you can now see why links to Youtube help videos I post in the forum are the full address rather than an abbreviation. It makes it more convenient to highlight it and use Streamlight.

Just mentioning the following for interest.
In addition to Dillo, antiX ships with another ultralight web browser.
        Main Menu→Applications→Internet→Links 2

It is actually a text mode web browser than can be run in a GUI mode, the latter mode being the default in antiX. Links 2 tends to be slightly more lightweight of the two browsers. Finding and highlighting the video address is less obvious, but like many other things it is easy once you know how. I’ll leave you to puzzle it out (not very difficult) because learning-by-doing can be rewarding in itself.

I have installed AntiX-17 core on my EEEPC-901 with a live usb stick created on my HP Laptop within Antix-17 full. I did verify the md5sum of the downloaded iso prior to running Live-usb Maker. I did not install X. I am able to run applications from the command line. I configured the wireless network, updated the repos from aptiX-cli and installed links2 browser. I attempted to check out antiX-cli-cc but the application would not load. When executing the command antiX-cli-cc the screen goes blank and never recovers. I have to invoke ctl-alt-del to resolve the hang up. Any ideas why this might be happening?

Edit: It seems that I was confused by the video that I watched regarding the use of the cli control center. The cli antiX control center apparently only works in an X window environment as a console utility.

            Howdy caprea,

Yep at one time it did work and apparently things are changing faster than this old man can keep track of.

I’m unable to find this location /usr/local/bin.

I will figure it out although it gets frustrating sometimes.

            Thanks

@skidoo, I found where the source list is. They’re like separate lists inside /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

I got it so I can update and upgrade using the antix repo without the hash mismatch by forcing the repo to use ssl. Apparently accessing apt archives over HTTP can potentially lead to bugs. So like for example:
              `sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/antix.list`

              Then change for example:
              deb http://repo.antixlinux.com/testing/ testing main nosystemd
              to
              deb https://repo.antixlinux.com/testing/ testing main nosystemd

Here’s a site I found for hash mismatch errors and apt, and solutions:
              https://blog.packagecloud.io/eng/2016/09/27/fixing-apt-hash-sum-mismatch-consistent-apt-repositories/

Aha, it’s apparently a bug, so thanks for reporting it.
In post#2 I was scratching my head, wondering if the css theming was too wide and was pushing the right-side buttons off the screen…

So, I’ve been experimenting with Antix-17 on an old laptop, and I think it will be perfect for my old IBM NetVista 225732U. Notably, this machine has:

                  *1300/100 Mhz Celeron Processor
                  *256MB RAM
                  *Intel(R) 8xx Chipset Video BI

I burned the 32-bit antiX-17_386-base.iso image to a CD and booted up the machine. Immediately after loading the kernel, I am hit with this error:

                  Undefined video mode number: 317
Press <ENTER> to see video modes available, <SPACE> to continue, or wait 30 sec

After multiple reboots I’ve tried all three; none of them seem to make a difference. The machine eventually begins to load antiX, scrolling through colorful lines of text, apparently without incident. However, when it reaches the point where every other machine I’ve tested it on loads the graphical desktop, the IBM freezes on a black screen. I have noticed that the IBM reacts similarly to almost any Debian/Ubuntu-based distro. It boots Q4OS and Slacko Puppy Linux without difficulty. It also used to boot Lucid Puppy, but booting Tahrpup results in the same screen blanking as soon as the machine tries to load the graphical environment.
Is there anything I can do to load antiX properly. Could it be that this machine is just too far behind the times? Any, and I mean any feedback would be appreciated.

ok (Thanks for jogging my memory, Dave) fbcondecor drives the default “bordered console wallpaper, with antiX world log displayed at bottom right”

various interchangeable “themes” for use with fbcondecor are pre-installed in antiX, residing in subdirectories under /etc/splash/
                    Within a theme file, e.g. https://github.com/antiX-Linux/Xlated-initrd/blob/master/etc/splash/antiX-purple-red/1024×768.cfg
you can specify (customize) various details: text size / offset, border details (or none), background image (or none, or solid bgcolor).
Each of the pre-installed themes uses a shared set of background imagefiles ( see: /etc/splash/images/antiX/ ).

                    /etc/splash/images/antiX/
                    verbose-800x600.png
                    verbose-1024x600.png
                    verbose-1024x768.png
                    verbose-1280x1024.png
                    verbose-1366x768.png
                    verbose-1440x900.png
                    verbose-1600x1200.png
                    verbose-1600x900.png
                    verbose-1920x1080.png

Although I rescaled, and passed back to BitJam, several of those pre-installed imagefiles, I don’t recall what “specs” (16bit color?) fbcondecor expects/requires.
If creating a custom theme imageset, you can just work from these existing imagefiles ~~ load/edit/SaveAs
Note: although the existing themes employ a different sized image for various (common) W x H sizes, this isn’t a requirement.
(The textual lower-left “antiX” displayed in the pre-installed imageset appeared blurred if one-size-fits-all was stretched to fit.)

what does “v” mean in “splash=v” parameter?

howabout “heuristically speaking, v means verbose
(the v, by itself, “means” nothing. The optional bootline parameter “splash=v” (noquotes) is parsed by init and triggers a conditional operation, if present.)

edited to add additional details gleaned from the oldforums archive:

when bootline arg splash=v is present:
the default theme is used, unless the arg theme=mycustomthemename is also present in the boot line

                    sudo splash-select
^— (at least when using antiX17 live), this utility enables you to change themes and (a recently added feature) to edit the current theme.
After launching the splash-select utility, press the ‘e’ key to edit the current theme.

(I read, but have not tested the following)
                    The tx=and tw= values, as found within theme files ( /etc/splash/antiX-purple-red/1024×768.cfg )
Apparently you can dynamically override those values, via optional bootline parameters.
The tx= parameter changes the left margin of the text and the tw= parameter changes with width of the text area.

I would feel more comfortable if the Debian Start button and task panel were there right from the start
but on each reboot I have to select rox-icewm after right clicking on screen. I then get what I want.

Well, the StartButton would be labeled “antiX” (not Debian) but, yes, post-install, that should have been immediately present.
(this has been thoroughly field-tested by many betatesters)

When I boot into antix there is no default desktop. I must select from menu after right click on screen

“I must select it” ~~ apparently you did so, perhaps experimenting… and a “no icons present on desktop” wound up preserved as your last-chosen (your new default) desktop environment.
Another possiblity: you selected something other than rox+icewm way back during the liveboot boot menu… and that choice wound up being applied as the default when you installed.

Rather than going into the logout menu, click menu -> logout.

^—— Did you do this? When you do this, what is the result?

If you reach a popup offering choices (logout, suspend, hibernate, shutdown, order pizza…) choose Logout
Doing so will bring you to the SLiM (slim login manager) login screen, where you will have opportunity to choose rox+icewm.
Later, following shutdown/reboot, you can expect this last-used choice will be preserved, auto-logging you into a rox+icewm desktop.

                                Cordialement

                                Yves

                                  Regarding the missing menu entry:

I’m wondering whether the installation did, in fact, complete successfully.
? What is the result when you open a terminal and type which epiphany
? Does the browser launch if you type epiphany at the command prompt

                                  Today (just now) I learned:
Apparently, neither fluxbox nor icewm (or the menumaker routine for those) “care” whether the Exec= line contains a valid launchstring.
In my paste-n-test scenario, epiphany doesn’t exist on the system… yet menumaker happily parses the .desktop file and creates jwm+fluxbox menu entries for epiphany.
After changing “Exec=epiphany %U” to “Exec=geany %U” (geany is installed), menumaker finally created an icewm menu entry based on the new testing.desktop file.
