Seems the QT dependancy problem has been around on and off for years.
The offending library is a virtual package within libqt5core5a.

Below quick and effective dirty hack found on a KDE Neon page and
updated, it gets things working, up to now I see no untoward effects.
That is not a garantee. :-)…
Users should keep a copy of changes made just in case it is needed later.
Easy to remove any packages as long as console access is available. AND
      you know what to remove.
      That is generaly applicable.

Better fix needed upstream, this is more an easily reverted workaround.
This time I have not posted a bug report, last one left me with an
unusable EMail account to to massive spam. EMail is openly displayed
      with the bug report.

        Hi Brian M,

Thanks for the link. I looked that over and also one from a digitalocean.com(/community/tutorials/how-to-configure-periodic-trim-for-ssd-storage-on-linux-servers).

I plan to practice on one of my systems which currently doesn’t have TRIM enabled.

Apparently, the procedure is (1) make sure that “discard” (continuous trimming) is disabled and (2) write a script (/etc/cron.weekly/fstrim) which includes the path and a line
        /sbin/fstrim --all || true

The script has to be made executable
        sudo chmod +x /etc/cron.weekly/fstrim

I will implement that on this machine and then see if it seems to be working by writing test files and deleting them.

          Hello stevesr0.

Yesterday I managed to prepare a tutorial on how to use the “f10-fm-config.sh” script that the PPC created and is available at Configurator Manager zzzFM Files for antiX 21. The tutorial has the step by step of what to do to use the script “f10-fm-config.sh”, it has the screenshots of each customization that I did after running the “f10-fm-config.sh”, an option for Brazilian Portuguese speakers that only allows you to copy the settings and paste them into the correct folder. The explanatory text file is in Brazilian Portuguese language, I made a copy of the file in English language from the automatic translation. If you review the machine translation texts, please send me your corrected file that I make available on archive.org.

          The right-click menu options are:
Delete – will permanently delete the file or folder. The same effect you get with the key combination “Shift+Delete”.
Move to Trash – moves or sends the file or folder to /home/your username/.local/share/Trash/files. The same effect you get with the “Delete” key.

Another option with the Recycle Bin and the customizations that PPC taught us are in Configurations from zzzFM File Manager with Recycle Bin for antiX 21 in pt-BR language, but with much less features that are available in “f10-fm-config.sh”.

(Apparently today, Brazilian Portuguese is no longer an option in Google Translate, only Portuguese!?)
Despite displaying only the “Portuguese” option, the texts are in the “Brazilian Portuguese” language and Google does not always translate the words into English. Google’s programmer must think that we understand the English language (lots of laughter), maybe it’s to practice English with our Spanish-speaking neighbors (lots of laughter), with the exceptions: Guyana (English language), French Guiana (French language ), Suriname (Dutch language and Falkland language (English language) which are thousands of kilometers from where I live. Thank you for your kindness.

            Hi marcelocripe,

I followed those instructions and they work to a point.

The “Delete” option no longer is associated with the Delete key. When I use the delete key, the file goes to the Trash (= Recycle) subdirectory.

However, when I select the file with the mouse and then in the menu select “Delete” with the mouse, I am asked if I want to delete the file. If I say yes, the file still gets deleted NOT transferred to the trash directory.

In addition, when I opened a root window in zzzfm, I realize that no Trash option has been added. That apparently is treated as a separate application in this regard.

With those limitations, I do appreciate having a trash/recycle bin.

            Thanks for help.

My intentions are not to discredit anyone, only to indicate that the antiX team is doing it’s best job; sorry my words and intentions are unclear; no attacks or criticisms were either made or suggested, nor are they now. As for the work here, the vast majority of us here love what we have and what we’re doing; when mentioning “perfection” I’m speaking here as a developer, tester, maintainer. Those of us who have had a long career in this profession know good software and I emphatically believe that we have very good software.

As I said, it’s not perfect in the senses that it is not guaranteed to be 100% defect free, the documentation is a work of love by many people, yet nobody claims at any time that there may be areas where improvements could be made. Our work is a balance: from the standpoint of efficiencies, it would be hard to get much better in efficiency without sacrificing something else, so it’s a work very well done. At the same time, while it’s great at what it is designed to do, it’s possible (if so inclined) to find particular things it doesn’t offer by default.

So in short, my statements are not attempting to criticize anyone in this discussion or anyone in development; they are merely an attempt – one which clearly didn’t resonate acceptably to everyone – that we have a good effort, something that is always a work in progress. Anticapitalista does read and consider the views of the readership, yet he is also clear in what he intends to produce – something that strikes, in his opinion, the best possible balance between extremely lean code and a reasonably practical system that people can use who typically do not have the most current hardware and in many cases, can’t afford anything other than what they have. He also wants to keep older working equipment available and usable – something positive in terms of keeping hardware usable and out of the toxic waste dumps!

I hope this clarifies some of my comments and thinking – I’m definitely not aiming attack or criticism upon anyone, simply explaining an apparently unconventional viewpoint.

                Hi all,
I hit the delete “button” while hovering over my Documents directory.

Haven’t done this in a long time, so I looked at how to undelete. Messed around with testdisk and photorec, realized that I was not doing this safely (not running a read only system to prevent ongoing changes) and stopped last night.  (Testdisk apparently doesn’t work on ext4 systems?)

Looked around on another machine and found extundelete, which seems as if it might “simply” undelete my Documents directory at one blow.

But I figure one of you folks might have (unfortunately) a lot of knowhow.
So, before I further mess with it, I would appreciate your advice.

                Thanks in advance.

This should not happen. Wireless and all settings should be cloned. Are you using Connman and CMST, which is default or another network manager?
On CMST just enable wireless if it shows disabled, chose your WiFi. It should be saved automatically next time you boot.
About not finding WPA supplicant puzzles me though. Is the source usb antiX connecting to WiFi? And did you clone via live-usb-maker as outlined before?

That’s what I thought too, “This shouldn’t be happening.” Yes, using defaults. When starting off with a new distro, I try not to make any real changes until I know my way around a bit.
Using CMST, both Ethernet and Wifi are ‘powered on’. I can turn them off and back on with the button under in the ‘Powered’ column. However, in Global Properties the State shows ‘Idle’. And on the Wireless tab, there are no SSIDs listed (and there are about 20 around me).
This is not what happens when I run it live from USB. There, I see all the SSIDs and can connect to mine.
I tried another route via terminal to turn it on, based on another post I found somewhere, but I can’t recall what that was today and I apparently don’t have history. This brings up another question that I’ve been thinking about… I should probably setup the live USB with persistence before I clone it?

@olsztyn thanks again for the help and detailed responses. I’m going to work through the additional instructions in your latest post to remaster the USB prior to install to SSD and see what comes of that.

                    Thanks Brian!

The problem is that the dotfiles in the home directory and .config doesnt even begin to cover it. Off the top of my head, some configs that would not be carried over are: editing /etc/inittab to allow autologin on tty1, edit /etc/apt/apt.conf to get apt to also install recommended packages, change default sudo editor (sudo update-alternatives –install /usr/bin/editor editor /usr/bin/micro 100), purge unnecessary locales, etc etc. I’ve installed antix 21 on other systems and thats when it becomes apparent just how much I’ve tweaked antix 19. So when I finally do get around to upgrading to 21 on my main system I’m going to document every single change that I make 🙂

Its a fun game of rediscovery. Run sudo visudo in the terminal and realize that, oh yeah, its using nano as the editor. I changed that to a more sane editor like micro on my other system, but how? Google, find solution, implement. Repeat.

I did a bit of exploratory work on the antiX 5.10 kernel, because 5.10.137 WORKS on my Acer Aspire 5 Model A515-55, but NOT on my Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop, which until recently had worked with ANY antiX kernel!

So here’s what I tried on the Dell today in the 5.10 series:

                        1) linux-image-5.10.104-antix.1-amd64-smp — works on the Dell!
                        2) linux-image-5.10.137-antix.1-amd64-smp — does NOT work on the Dell; kernel dumps.
                        3) linux-image-5.10.137-antix.1-686-smp-pae — does NOT work on the Dell; kernel dumps.

I’ve previously used the older 5.10.88 image and that works fine too, but that was not in today’s test.

                        inxi -xz

Apparently I have more “work” to do; I put two 5.10 kernels on the Dell, and then neither of them worked. I’ll revisit that again the next time I’m on that system.

Meanwhile I’m back on the Acer Aspire 5 Model A515-55 and I DO have a 5.10 kernel working here:

                          SUCCESS!
From https://linux-libre.fsfla.org/pub/linux-libre/freesh/pool/main/l/linux-libre/ I just downloaded & installed the following files:
                          linux-image-5.10.141-gnu1_5.10.141-gnu1-1.0_amd64.deb and linux-headers-5.10.141-gnu1_5.10.141-gnu1-1.0_amd64.deb

I’m delighted to say, that with these image and header versions of 5.10, the Asus X71Q-7SC002 finally achieved success with an apparently normal boot. This ageing laptop is therefore good at least until this kernel’s end-of-life in December 2026.

Please could a moderator therefore please mark this thread as [SOLVED].
                          Many thanks!

                            Hi!

I recently installed antiX-21 on my little Samsung N150 notebook. One program that’s acting up is Focuswriter. It was working just fine until I set it to play the typewrite sounds. When it loads now, it just hangs, with a “loading sounds” message, but doesn’t actually run. I did try a complete uninstall via Synaptic, and thought I deleted all its config files before reinstalling, but apparently, it’s still trying to load sounds and not loading. Any suggestions?

Nothing urgent; it’s just that I do like using Focuswriter sometimes.

                            Thanks in advance.

Just to report a postscript to this problem which has only now become clear to me, Hplip is apparently not the software to use to introduce a new printer on the PC I’m using, with the 40-pin Centronics socket on the 4100N cabled to a Usb port.

Running ‘sudo hp-setup’ does not locate any printer on my system apart from the HP PSC 1510 cabled via Usb, which I only use for scanning, using all 3 available modes of printer detection in Hplip the 4100N is not located.

However the routine ‘introduce new printer’ option in control center/hardware/print settings/add does find the 4100N if switched on and configures it correctly, the test page offered during the procedure coming out as expected. In fact I would like to try not installing hplip at all, but only Cups, to see if the ‘add’ option still finds and configures it.

                                Moddit,
Thank you for your helpful post.
LibreWolf version 104.0-1 was installed via antiX package installer.
With pulseaudio installed, and configured to start on boot-up, audio now works on LibreWolf… but, as you suggested, not in Firejail.

Apparently, pulseaudio is problematic in firejail.

.asoundrc does not exist in my system. ControlCentre/Hardware/Sound Card Chooser reports “Only one sound card found. Nothing to do.” If that is the program which creates .asoundrc, it apparently doesn’t do so, because there is “nothing to do.” But, the LibreWolf audio does work with pulseaudio outside of firejail. (Thanks for your explanation of .asoundrc.)

Strangely, it appears that FireFox is able to adjust its “Audio Backend” to accommodate the available audio system.
With pulseaudio present, outside of Firejail, Firefox shows “Audio Backend” as “Pulse-Rust”.
But if pulseaudio is uninstalled, or if FF is run in Firejail, Firefox shows “Audio Backend” as “alsa”.
If LibreWolf was similarly accommodating, the audio issues might resolve themselves. (Suggestions to that effect have been made to LibreWolf. We’ll see if that is implemented in the future.)

I tried LibreWolf as an appimage. Audio plays fine (even without pulseaudio). But I couldn’t make the appimage play in firejail. The firejail version in default repositories may be just a little too old?

                                Thank you.

Thank you very much @iznit, the mongodb script worked, but it has a bug. When I run “sudo service mongod start” the mongodb service starts, but when I run “sudo service mongod status” the following message appears:
Checking status of database: mongod apparently not running failed!

This message is wrong, I have verified that mongod is running. Also, “sudo service mongod stop” doesn’t work either.

As for the mysql script, I had to make some changes for it to work. I had to add the following lines:

                                  PID_FILE_DIR="$(dirname "${mysqld_pid_file_path}")"
                                  [ ! -d "${PID_FILE_DIR}" ] && mkdir -p -m 0755 "${PID_FILE_DIR}" && chown mysql:mysql "${PID_FILE_DIR}" || :
                                  [ ! -d "${LOG_DIR}" ] && mkdir -p -m 0755 "${LOG_DIR}" && chown mysql:mysql "${LOG_DIR}" || :

Had to do this because the pid and log folders are removed when you power off the system, but they are not recreated by systemd when the system powers up. The mysql script worked perfectly with the changes I made.
The tip to mimic systemctl is great, I’ll test it and bring the answers soon. Thanks a lot for the tips.
