I have an internal network and want to connect to a computer via samba
how to do?
Where can I find a tutorial or manual to operate icewm?I was a little confused for some time, while trying to share my printer over the network. It seemed my edits of smb.conf had no effect whatsoever. Then I checked in Synaptic and found out that samba wasn’t even installed on my system (Antix 17.2). After installing, everything worked out well after a while. Two questions however.
- Why is smb.conf present if samba itself is not installed?
- What’s the purpose of these numerous copies of smb.conf? I found one in ~/.smb.conf, another one in /etc/samba/smb.conf and a third one in /usr/share/samba/smb.conf.

I have an Antix 16 server, that runs Cups, Samba, MySQL and Bacula. I want to upgrade this to Antix 17, but the server is too critical to simply install the new version, so I thouight I would take a snapshot, install the snapshot on a Qemu/KVM vm and could test the upgrade process, update the repos and dist-upgrade. I upgraded my laptop from 16 to 17 using this method, so it seems succesfull. My first attempt with antixsnapshot failed, when booting the iso, it couldn’t locate linuxfs. The only change I had made to antixsnapshot.conf was to change the file locations from the default. I discovered I had not update the “exclude” correctly and had failed to include a 900G filesystem, not sure why that made a difference but it seemed to. My second attempt with antixsnapshot generated a snapshot with linuxfs, but now I get a message about missing /live/aufs. isosnapshot is not an option, there is no X on the server. Any ideas?

Does anybody understands how “Connect Shares” works and could somebody please help me to successfully connect something over it, at least once in my life? 🙂
Since the examples are always the easiest way to understand, I shell make an imaginary environment first, before I ask my question.
Let’s imagine one Windows 10 Home machine with working SMB (v1) share and an Antix trying to connect to it.
Host Maschine:
Machine Type: Windows 10 Home
Machine Name: Win10H-PC
Machine IP: 192.168.0.100
Workgroup: WORKGROUP
Share name: win10share
Username: Admin
Password: AdminPWAntix (Remote) Machine:
Username: antix
Password: antix
Mount Point: /home/antix/win10shareThe share on Windows is “free 4 all” (== 777) type and it’s up an running …
(Hint: Win 10 will disable deprecated SMB v1 shares after couple of days if not used and they have to be explicitly activated – it’s not a topic here).From Antix side, one can connect to that share easily from cmd, simply by using:
sudo mkdir /mnt/win10share
sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.0.100/win10share /mnt/win10share -o user=AdminDrawback of this method is, that (normal) user Antix can see the share and can read the files in it but it can’t write to a share or create new files.
To be able to write to that share, it has to create the mount point somewhere under its own directory, where it has read/write rights.
Additionally, it has to out find its own uid and gid first (id -u USERNAME and id -g USERNAME; if the first and only user, it’ll be 1000 for both).id -u antix
id -g antix
mkdir ~/win10share
sudo mount -t cifs -o username=Admin,password=AdminPW,uid=1000,gid=1000 //192.168.0.100/win10share /home/antix/win10sharePress Enter and our user Antix can happily read and write to the win10share, mounted in a local directory, just beside Documents, Photos and Videos.
Now my question:
Connect Shares asks a couple of easy (if one understands them) questions.
REMOTE=192.168.1.28
SAMBA=y
WORKGROUP=WORKGROUP
SHARESUSER=win10share –> NO IDEA With or w/o IP? with slash or backslash?
CREDAUTO=y
CREDNAME=Admin
CREDPASS=AdminPW
SHARESGUEST=n –> Windows 10 will reject anonymous login
SAMBAOPT= –> NO IDEA
NFS=y
SHARESIPDNS= –> NO IDEA how to write the path, like SHARESUSER
NFSOPT=rw –> NO IDEA if it needs more then rw (read / write)Can anybody who understands it, finish this imaginary configuration file so that it works?
Many thanks!
I finally did a build up from core, I used IceWM and roaming WiFi. I did it on the old Dell D620. I should be able to get memory used to about 65.0 mb. I’m at 71.0 mb now, but that’s using Xterm and 5 getty sessions, no Conky, no Background. I just wanted to see if I could get it to work…
I didn’t have major problems. The worst problem was getting X to run when not root, needing to add 2 lines to /etc/X11/Xrapper.config.
allowed_users=console needs_root_rights=yesI will see if I can get the history and a memory readout next time I bring up the browser. I suppose its not totally realistic with no conky or screensaver, but it was quite an adventure to get it loaded and get X windows to come up and work.

I use a program called comm to compare the antix install list to a current list, and what wasn’t there in core is listed here. My notes say I should (ie untested at this point) be able to process add list onto a core install with:
xargs -a pkgschgd.add.txt apt-get install`Too bad I haven’t been able to figure out how to port ksnakeduel to a non-kde environment. It really brought a lot in with it. But I like playing it, oh well.
Menus are working, but many programs aren’t on them. Haven’t investigated that, yet.
I don’t like the standard theme, wish I had my rollup shade windows, oh well.
Anyway, for one evening’s work I did fairly well…
Anyone know a way to take this list and remove from it all the packages required by any other on the list?
