@anticapitalista – sparked by the fact that a new forum user wants to connect to his network shared folders, I tweaked a little bit the script that scans the network for samba2+ shared folders and opens any selected one on the default file manager. The script and the multilingual .desktop file are less than 11kb, and the requerired dependencies only get installed (if the user so allows) at first run. This means, that, for users that do not require this feature, there is no drain on their system resources, and, for users that need a “automagical” way to connect to a shared folder… that feature is available out of the box.
changes from the original script and .desktop file (from the original ones in the ft10-transformation package):
– I renamed both the script and the .desktop file, to avoid any conflict with ft10, also corrected a typo on the script’s name.
– The script now opens the selected network shared folder in the default file manager, not always in zzzfm
– The “notification” that appears on the lower right, when no network shared folder is found is now more streamlined, it looks more like a system notification…As is, both files can be placed in any “goodies” package and be available under any version of antiX. There is only a single text that may require localization- the one shown when the dependencies need to be installed. The rest of the GUI does not require any localization, in good old Window’s style, it’s as “dumbed down” as a GUI can be… literally just pictures…

Hi. there is no need to install FT10 to use the samba2 shared folder GUI script- it’s available here in the forum. For your convinience, I attached it below. Unzip and run the script – it tries to install any missing dependencies, at first run.
How it works:
Run the script and it tries to install any missing dependencies (asks user’s authorization first); then it scans the network for shared folders. If a shared folder is found, it’s shown on a list. Click the shared folder you want to connect to. If you need to enter credentials, do so on the window that pops up (if not, just don’t enter anything in the credentials window). The shared folder should pop up in zzzfm.
If no network shared folder is found a “notification” will pop up, on the lower right corner of the screen.Limitations of the GUI script:
It works only on samba2 shared folders (not in previous versions) and it’s been reported to fail if the “share” includes spaces in it’s name.Personal opinion:
Since there are lots of people that do have to user their computers with shared folders (specially in a work envirnoment), I do think this script, and it’s .desktop file should be included, by default in antiX. The script and it’s .desktop file take about 11kb of disk space (since it only installs the very small dependencies when people want to use it).P.

I encounter difficulties in mounting my NAS with Sambashare.
The problem is : Antix tries to establish an SMB1 connection, and the Synology denies this.
No, I don’t want to allow SMB1 connectionsWhat version of antiX is that? Since long time it has been the other way round – default protocol is SMB2 and it has been more difficult to set up access to SMB1 NAS.
If you are using any antiX later than antiX 17 then it should be pretty simple to access SMB2 NAS. Choice of options:
– Connectshares
– FSTAB definitions
– directly from default file manager (zzzFM)
– SMBmap script developed by PPC.The last method (smbmap) is very easy to use and works with SMB2 and up NAS servers. It is a particularly useful utility, however it has not been made available separately but only as bundled with FT10 antiX transformation script. It is a pity that you would be forced to install the FT10 in order to perform smbmap connection to NAS SMB2, but this is what it is, unless PPC would be willing to make smbmap script separately, not forcing FT10 installation.
Connectshares (developed by SamK) has been with antiXfor a long time and works just fine.
I have used all the above methods and currently am connecting to multiple NAS servers, both SMB2 and SMB1 with no issues.Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):

No, I don’t want to allow SMB1 connections 🙂
How can I force SMB2 or 3 in Antix ? I find here and there solutions implying modifying smb.conf, but I understand Samba isn’t “really” installed on Antix (no smb.conf nor related folder).
And apparently installing samba fails because some dependencies can’t be installed.

Hey Robin!
Thanks very much again.
I meant to thank you for your awesome help/explanation with Samba too.
I wrote up a PM to send you….
but it doesn’t seem like PMs are an option on these forums, and my thread was closed.
anyway….
Thank you for taking the time for that – I learned a lot about how to think these things through,
and it was my first experience with “dependecy hell”.Back to this thread…
My system supports hibernate.
I have experienced systems not waking from hibernate on a desktop – similar to you with an NVIDIA card.
On my desktop: I swapped the NVIDIA out with an ATI Radeon and works fine (:
No more NVIDIA and their closed source bullshit when I have other options. For my laptop in this thread:
I have confirmed it supports hibernate, per your instructions.
pm-is-supported –hibernate; echo $?
this returns 0.However, when after I put it into hibernate – by running
sudo pm-hibernate…when I awaken the laptop :
it is as if it was starting freshly from a poweroff.
I have to decrypt the encrypted drive,
no applications are open etc.…So:: I suspect I do not have a large enough swap.
I will try and expand it – and see how it works. When you say (in your second post) ::
“antiX doesn’t make use of this specific way of management.”Which “specific way of management” does it make use of?
Is this in reference to init system related things?
Is it related to differences between system-d and whatever antix22 is using (runit or openrc I guess?)I ran :
sudo service –status-all
and it returned some interesting results about what was enabled and disabled (:Thanks again!

Finally had the time to fix what was missing in zzzfm’s config file:
This script should fix the buttons to change between the compact and detailed views (using ctrl+6 and ctrl+7 as key-binds to those views)
targetfile=~/.config/zzzfm/session #insert keybindings for detailed and compact views echo "panel1_list_detailed-key=54" >> $targetfile echo "panel1_list_detailed-keymod=4" >> $targetfile echo "panel1_list_compact-key=55" >> $targetfile echo "panel1_list_compact-keymod=4" >> $targetfile #change button entries so they work with those keys, instead of the previous "buggy" scripts sed -i "s/cstm_248656b5-line=.*/cstm_248656b5-line=xdotool key Ctrl+6/g" $targetfile sed -i "s/cstm_6c5d99cd-line=.*/cstm_6c5d99cd-line=xdotool key Ctrl+7/g" $targetfile@anticapitalista – you can apply this to your zzzfm config file (make sure to all zzzfm instances, before doing so, or else the change to the config files won’t stick
To anyone else testing the changes to zzzfm – on the terminal run:
pkill zzzfmThen you can run the above script to fix those zzzfm buttons. don’t forget to select zzz-icewm desktop from the antiX menu, to re-enable desktop icons.
Edit: in my opinion, with the fixes I propose, zzzfm is almost a “perfect” File Manager. I would just suggest some minor changes (just to group them all on the same post):
– add (and localize) a “Music” Bookmark
– include, in antiX 23a1 the script to automatically connect to Samba 2 shared networks- it’s tiny and it installs the needed dependencies only if users click it (i.e.- try to use it)
– add a Bookmark to the above mentioned script
– possibly (as a bonus feature)- add (and localize) a “Send to Desktop” contextual menu entry, that can be helpful for clueless users trying to send stuff to the desktop, in the cases where drag and drop fail to work for no obvious reason to them (ex: .desktop files)
– add a Bookmark to the folder where .desktop files are, to provide fast access to all apps, on system where app-select is slow to start
– use double click to launch files – in single click mode, I find it almost impossible to select more than one file…@anticapitalista – If you are interested in any of this suggestions, you can easily implement most of them or you can tell me which ones you want, and later, I can try implementing those changes.
For now I’ll try to earn my living 🙂P.

ok. Just tried it live:
*about my infernal login “bug”:
-The issue I reported that happens in the installed antiX 19/22 here in this Dell desktop, happens when running antiX 23-a1 live:
I boot (it’s the same on both kernels) to a desktop without conky, and nothing seems to work until I change desktop/restart IcewM. Just found a new think: at least here in antiX 23a1, things do run- I clicked, by mistake in the presentation video and I got the scare of my life when I started hearing a strange voice after some 5 seconds- it’s D.O.’s voice, from the video- nothing showed in the desktop, but the video was running!*about the looks:
-Wow – great default wallpaper
-Wow – great that the default icewm theme is the dark one, nice touch, having volume-icon set to white- it’s easy to see! Perfect
-The new menu and toolbar layout seems more intuitive, less cluttered.*about zzzfm:
-nice to have the usual bookmarks – but they don’t work on localized systems because they link to the english folder name: ex: /home/demo/documents, and not, in pt-pt /home/demo/documentos
-nice to see “Recent files” got into the zzzfm default setting – it’s a nice little touch, since jwm and fluxbox do not have a “Recent files” menu entry.
-“Restore” contextual menu should only show up in the trash folder (there’s an how-to do it, in the antix-23 suggestions thread, by me)
-“Send to trash” contextual menu should not show up when in the trash folder
-All this new zzzfm entries require, of course, localization- get ready, translation team!*Youtube video player fails to work
*Wallpaper settings does not show the “no wallpaper” option
*Recent files in Icewm menu seems to include the fix to show special characters! Yes!… but bobc’s updated scripts to manage that entry are not being used!
*on “just icewm” desktop, rox is the default File Manager – it makes sense to swap it for zzzfm, on all desktops (even when it’s not running desktop icons)
*”Modem manager”? Hum…
* Still no compositor installed by default? If it’s not too heavy, I vote for including one – its not just eye candy- it fixes some video problems too
* The sound, for some reason is way louder than on antiX 22! Yes- I can hear stuff fine on my tiny work speakers, was that by chance?
* If possible, use the .desktop entries localized for antiX autoremove; chroot; user language; yad-color
* Also, putting user language up for localization would be nice , if it’s not already (I did not see it)- if there’s a script worth localizing, it’s that one! 🙂*system resources: after playing with the OS, opening Firefox-esr, file manager, etc, and closing everything, 178M of RAM usage. Nice
When using just the “icewm” desktop, it uses 159M of 8Gb*Suggestion (for any antix version, in fact):
– in Control Panel, if CUPS is not installed, in printer settings, show a window warning users to install it, and if, disabled just run it, before showing the printer properties)
– Maybe add an updated GUI script to set the page size, also in C.P.?
– Include the suggestions I made in Package Installer, if possible (and the option to install the old antix wallpapers).
– Add a GUI off-line .deb installer – doesn’t MX have it’s own deb-installer? Can it be used in antiX?
– Add the updated antiX-updater script, maybe?
– The script to connect to samba shares would be a nice addition, maybe? It only installs the dependencies at first run, so it takes just a few kb on the iso, and is right there in zzzfm, in case users need this feature.*Verdict:
For abetaalpha, extremely nice and stable, from what I tested!
The OS looks more slick, modern, easy to use, feature rich, just amazing, considering it uses way less than 200Mb of RAMP.

Any pointers on how you diagnosed this?
OK, I’m not that experienced in packaging and package management. But in my postings above I had highlighted the important lines which contained the needed pieces of information to resolve this issue already. A brief summary:
From your start posting:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
samba : Depends: python3-samba but it is not going to be installed
Depends: samba-common-bin (= 2:4.13.13+dfsg-1~deb11u5) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libwbclient0 (= 2:4.13.13+dfsg-1~deb11u5) but 2:4.17.4+dfsg-2~bpo11+1 is to be installed
Depends: samba-libs (= 2:4.13.13+dfsg-1~deb11u5) but it is not going to be installedHere obviously the line
Depends: libwbclient0 (= 2:4.13.13+dfsg-1~deb11u5) but 2:4.17.4+dfsg-2~bpo11+1 is to be installed
discloses what keeps the packages from being installed.First idea was some other package might request this version explicitly (creating a version conflict), so I asked you to show the output of a command disclosing which packages depend on this package:
apt-get --simulate purge libwbclient0Your answer was:
Purg connectshares-antix [0.3.6]
Purg cifs-utils [2:6.11-3.1+deb11u1]
Purg libwbclient0 [2:4.17.4+dfsg-2~bpo11+1]Which means: The first two packages depend on the package libwbclient0, since they would get removed when removing the package to be checked.
The third line discloses the recently installed version of libwbclient0, which is the backported version as you can see yourself.
Now, since no other programs besides the default antiX preinstalled packages depend on this, which are known to work properly with the default libwbclient0 version, I suggested to give a downgrade of the libwbclient0 package to the default version a chance. That was my path of thinking, and that’s all I can tell you. It’s simply about applying strictly logically considerations on the findings, deriving most promising next steps, and applying logically considerations again from their output, and so on.
and I see it that :
libwbclient0 [2:4.17.4+dfsg-2
is an unofficial port, as you sayThis is not what I said. I said, you installed a backport version, but this does not mean it is inofficial. On contrary, these are official debian backports. For further information about backports see: Debian Backports
What would give me a good understanding of Debian installation problems?
This is a question I can’t answer unfortunately, this exceeds my knowledge. I only know it is quite difficult. For further information about what issues are to be dealt with please read: Dependency Hell
This might shed some light on all the pitfalls of package management.Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.
January 24, 2023 at 11:47 am #98153MemberRobin
Obviously for some strange reason on your system is already installed the libwbclient0 version from the backports (2:4.17.4+dfsg-2~bpo11+1):
Purg libwbclient0 [2:4.17.4+dfsg-2~bpo11+1]
Please try to downgrade this version to the default non-backport version. From your output is clear, no other programs than the standard antiX tools depend on this on your system, so there is no reason to have the version from the backports installed.
Try:sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install libwbclient0=2:4.13.13+dfsg-1~deb11u5.0nosystemd1Then try to install samba again. If the downgrade was successful, the install should work now.
Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

Hi Robin and Anticapitalista. Thanks for your help.
Thanks everyone for your other suggestions and info / discussion.I tried Anticapitalista’s suggestion :
I used repo manager to switch to another local repo destination.I then ran sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade – (not part of your instructions, but I thought good to do after switching antix repo mirror).
(I selected default option for when I was queried on whether I wanted to upgrade various antix and DE upgrades).
….but still no luck installing Samba.I might try again tomorrow, switching to another repo-mirror again, in case I am getting same problem on both mirrors.

Dear “The Mas”:
I only made my suggestion about making zzzfm the default (with a new config file) because anticapitalista said himself he was pondering that.
Since I consider myself the self appointed UX guy for antiX (for whatever that’s worth), I posted “thinking out loud”, letting anticapitalista know about all possible consequences, and ways around them, that choosing zzzfm as defaulf fm implies.A bit off-topic, but replying to your excellent suggestions:
1- FT10 messes as little as possible with the user’s settings (following the antiX policy of not changing the user’s home, unless it’s required to configure FT10). But the menu entry that refers to File Manager really points to “zzzfm||desktop-defaults-run -fm”. This means it tries to launch zzzfm and if it fails, it will run whatever is set as default File Manager – I thought it was a nice way to “push” users to use what I think of being one of the best and lightest FM available for any OS, that’s also one of the lightest, and still respect the user’s choice- from the default antiX menu, clicking “File Manager” does launch the default file manager (rox, zzzfm or any other). But newbies do have zzzfm available straight from the menu.
The same applies to the File Manager “Tile” and the File Manager quick launcher available by default on the tint2 toolbar.
Basically the user only notices that zzzfm is not the default FM when inserting a thumb drive or, in the browser, selecting to view a file in the file manager… I’m aware that may freak some newbies out, that think “why is this strange file manager showing my thumb-drive/download files? Does antiX have a bug”. So I may add, to the option, selected by default, in the “activate Ft10 window”, of configuring zzzfm, also make it the default FM…
2- I’ve discussed making a FT10 iso – BobC played with that idea, for a while. But I DO NOT want to make a new Distro/respin – a different question is having antiX Full and then antiX FT10 (the only difference between the proposed FT10 antiX flavour would be that the “FT10 – enable” screen would pop up automatically, in live mode (much like conman does, if no network is detected) with a new default select (default antiX toolbar and menu). The user would have 3/4 options:
a) default antiX toolbar and menu
b) FT10 toolbar with a categories menu
c) FT10 toolbar with a “Tiles menu” (similar to what windows 10 provides)
and eventually one extra option:
d) FT10 toolbar with a “simple menu” (that is The Tiled menu, with the tiles turned off- similar to what windows 11 provides- you can already achieve this, from ft10’s GUI, but it’s not that intuitive)The yad window would close automatically, if no selection is made in say, 30 or 60 seconds, leaving the user with the default antiX toolbar and menu (and some new menu entries, created by the FT10 package – like you said, they are minimal. Some features only install the required packages when the user chooses to start them for the first time, if the user chooses to proceed with the installation of the required packages. So, no “bloat” to connect to samba shared folders, if the user does not have any shared folders, etc…
In my proposed antiX Full- Ft10 “official flavour” (and not a spin), when the user installs antiX from the live environment, the installed version follows the selection the user made in live mode (or, in the worst case scenario, asks the user again which “interface” should be used, and make that permanent, unless the user runs “enable Ft10” again).P.
(PS: I’m already testing out the beta of the next version of FT10- version 1.5beta1- I have to insert the new scripts, to manage the clock and Titles of windows on the toolbar)

Hi sybok and everybody!
Wow, swift responses and active community.
Thanks so much for your assistance, pardon my slack response.
Long day, work, lack of sleep, etc. etc. Also just fyi – the version of antix I am running is the latest full install, I pulled it through the torrent on the website just a fortnight ago or so. No repos added – only non-standard thing I’ve done is added the brave keyring and etc. as per original post.

There are a few little learning curves for me in what is mentioned.
Anything further diagnostic I can try to work with is much appreciated.
I will try to return to this thread tomorrow in a more wakeful state hopefully.
Cheers!- This reply was modified 3 months, 2 weeks ago by spaz.
